Exam Analysis - TISS NET 2016

TISS-NET 2016 was conducted across 39 centres in India on 9 Jan, 2016. Besides the main programme, It is the pre-requisite for admissions into MA in Human Resource Management, the flagship course at TISS Mumbai. TISS also offers numerous programmes in the areas of social work, health, management, development, etc. through its centres at Mumbai, Tuljapur (Rural Maharashtra), Guwahati and Hyderabad.

Test pattern

The test had 3 sections: General Awareness, Logical Reasoning-Quantitative aptitude-Data Interpretation, and Verbal ability. The number of questions and marks were as follows:

Section No of Qs Total Marks
General Awareness 40 40
Logical Reasoning - Quantitative aptitude -
Data Interpretation
30 30
Verbal ability 30 30
Total 100 100

The overall time for answering the test was 100 min. There was no negative marking. There was no sectional time limit and the candidates could move freely across the sections within the time limit. TISS NET has traditionally not had any sectional cutoffs, the trend is expected to continue.

We expect the overall cutoff for the core HRM program to be in the range of 73-76 marks.

Math and Logical reasoning

The break-up of this section varied, with some students getting 7 questions on Logical reasoning, 12 questions on Quantitative aptitude and 11 questions on Data Interpretation, whereas some students got 15 questions in Logical reasoning, 8 questions in Quantitative aptitude and 7 questions in DI.

One such distribution of the questions in the QA-LR-DI area was as follows:

Area No of Qs
Venn Diagrams 1
Numerical/word series/Odd one out 3
Time and Work 1
Geometry and Mensuration 1
Ratio and Proportion 1
Percentages 1
Simple Interest/Compound Interest 1

Calendar 1
Direction Sense 1
Arrangements 1
Networks 2
Averages 1
Indices 1
Logarithms 1
Sets 1
Numbers 3
Data Interpretation 8
Total 30

The QA-LR-DI section was easy and even an average student could have solved at least 20 of the given 30 questions.

Around 3-5 questions were ambiguous/incomplete/wrong and may have lead to one not being able to attempt all 30 questions correctly:

Ideal time allocation for the section would be around 40-45 min.

Verbal Ability

The questions in the English Proficiency area were from the following areas:

Area No of Qs
Analogy (similar pair of words) 2
Fill in the blank (one blank or two blanks) 10
Reading comprehension 5
One word substitutes 2
Odd man out 3
Sentence correction 4
Idioms 3
Antonyms 1
Total 30

The questions in the English Proficiency section were of a easy-moderate level of difficulty and maintaining high accuracy would have been easy.

Overall, a good student could have attempted all 30 questions and can expect to get around 25-26 of them right in about 30 min.

General Awareness

The questions related to General Awareness were from History (India and World),Science, Current Affairs,Social awareness etc. The questions covered areas such as –

Area No. of questions

The questions were more generic, as has been the recent trend over the past three years. This is in contrast to the time when the questions used to be predominantly from the field of Social Sciences.

Ideal time distribution for the section would be around 20 min.
