TISS Entrance Test 2010 for
admission to MA in HRM-LR program Analysis
The
exam was divided into two papers: Paper I and Paper II.
Paper I
was common for all MA program applicants. Like last year, TISS continued with
the tradition of giving a relatively easier Paper I.
Paper
II was for the MA program applied to and was different for different
programs. For the HRM-LR program, the
Paper II was relatively more difficult than the Paper I.

Section: Analytical & Numerical Ability
There was a DI set of 6 questions based on a pie-chart related to trade in fruit. (if this is about commerce). The set was simple with easy questions. There were questions from the Quant topics: Time & Work, Geometry & Mensuration, averages, and Number Series. These questions were fairly simple and could have been easily solved by students from all academic disciplines / backgrounds. There were a couple of questions from Non-verbal reasoning but were towards the difficult side.
A good number of Correct Attempts
(questions): 11-13 questions
Section: Language Ability
There was an RC passage with 5 inference based
questions. The passage was not an easy read and the questions were
moderately difficult too. The Verbal Ability questions covered topics like cloze
test, vocab-based questions, Paragraph formation, and
incorrect usage of words. Paragraph formation questions were of medium
difficulty level, whereas the other VA questions were simple and easy.
A good number of Correct Attempts
(questions): 13-15 questions
Section: Awareness of General
& Social Issues
The questions were from a variety of topics like
Geography, History, Basic Science, Economics and Current Affairs.
Students who read Newspapers regularly would have been able to answer a good
number of questions in this section.
A good number of Correct Attempts
(questions): 10-12 questions
Projected Overall Correct Attempts (questions) to
clear cut-off for Paper I: 38-42 questions
Paper II for HRM – LR program

Section I: Data Interpretation
There were 4 sets with 5 questions each. All
were table-based sets. The set on Student Expenditure (rural & urban) was fairly
simple and had easy questions. The set based on World Population was simple but advantage.
A good number of Correct Attempts
(questions): 12-14 questions
Section II: Data Sufficiency
The DS questions had 5 choices instead of 4
choices for all other questions in the paper. This introduced an additional
level of difficulty for students. The questions based on PPL (Percentages,
Profit & Loss) and Averages were easy to solve. Questions require
a sound understanding of basic concepts of Quant topics, especially Arithmetic.
A good number of Correct Attempts
(questions): 6-7 questions
Section III: Reading Comprehension
There were 3 passages. Two passages had 5
questions each and the third passage had 9 questions. All the passages had an
underlying HR theme. The passage of 9 questions was based on the theme of “Motivation
of employees” and required careful reading and had a mix of direct and
inference based questions.
A good number of Correct Attempts
(questions): 10-12 questions
Section IV: Business Knowledge
Questions were based on a variety of areas
like Foreign Trade, Global Economy, Brand & Punch lines, Current Affairs
related to the field of Business. There was a case study with 3 questions of a
stock-broker 'Vijay' and his investment in Stock Market. It needed a
careful reading and analysis. Students who read Economic Times regularly and
had gone through the last 10-12 issues of T.I.M.E magazines - MBA Education
& Careers would have been able to attempt a good number of questions.
A good number of Correct Attempts
(questions): 9-10 questions
Section V: Foundations of Management (Economic,
Sociological & Psychological)
This was by far the toughest section in the
paper. It tested the student's knowledge and awareness related to Economic,
Sociological & Psychological aspects of Management. Good understanding of
basic concepts related to these areas was a pre-requisite to
answer a good number of questions.
A good number of Correct Attempts
(questions): 6-7 questions
Projected Overall Correct Attempts (questions) to
clear the cut-off for Paper II: 45-50 questions
