AP-ICET 2015 – Analysis
AP-ICET 2015 was held on 16th May 2015. AP-ICET 2015 is the first Andhra Pradesh State Integrated Common Entrance Test for admission into M.B.A & M.C.A. courses of all the Universities in Andhra Pradesh State and their affiliated colleges.
The test was conducted by Andhra University, Vizag on behalf of APSCHE.
There was no change in the question paper pattern and the marking scheme as compared to ICET conducted during previous years. The question paper consisted of 200 questions to be answered in 150 minutes. There were three sections - Analytical Ability consisting of 75 questions, Mathematics section which had 75 questions and a section on Communication Ability with 50 questions. There was no negative marking. To help you understand this year’s test paper better, we provide you with a comprehensive analysis, below.

Section A – Analytical Ability
Data Sufficiency:
There was an increase in the number of questions from topic on Numbers when compared to previous ICET papers. This year there were 10 questions from Numbers. Generally, a lot of questions (about 6-7) are asked from Numbers. Other questions were from Plane Geometry & Mensuration, Modulus, Partnership, Sets, Trigonometry, Equations & Progressions. There was no reasoning based question in this section.
On the whole, the data sufficiency part can be rated as difficult, with difficulty level of 2/3rd of the questions being moderate to difficult. Some of the questions were tricky !!

Data Analysis:
This part had two DI sets – one set with 5 questions where the data was given in a table and another set with 5 questions where the data was represented in the form of a pie chart. There were no questions on Venn Diagrams in this section.
As far as the set where data was given in a table is concerned, the given data was easy to understand, but the questions were calculation based and time consuming. As regards the DI set based on pie chart – it was time taking to pick out the relevant values from the given information. The questions were easy and involved less calculations.
Reasoning: (Problem Solving, Coding-Decoding and Date, Time and Arrangement)
There were 42 Reasoning questions from the test area of Problem Solving.
-
Continuing the pattern that was followed in last few ICETs, this year also there were 20 questions based on series and analogies. There were equal number of series and analogies questions. There were eight questions on number series, two on letter series. As regards the questions on analogies, these are based on numbers and letters and there was one verbal analogy question. The difficulty level of these questions was similar to that of last year. There were five odd man out questions.
-
The questions on 'Coding – Decoding' were easy and all the ten questions were based on the given logic.
-
The questions on Clocks & Calendar, Arrival & Departure, Blood Relations, Symbols & Notations were of easy-moderate difficulty level
Overall, this section was easy. A score in the band of 30-32 out of 42 is a real good score in reasoning !!

Section B –Mathematical Ability
This section was time consuming. About 50% of the questions in this section were either moderate or difficult.
While there were few questions which could be solved by direct substitution using the formulae, there were lot of questions which were purely based on the application of the concepts rather that direct substitution in the formulae types. There were three new questions types, one on Binomial Theorem and two on Sets which were not asked in ICET in the past.
Over all, the section on Mathematical Ability in AP-ICET2015 was difficult.

Section – C -Communication Ability
To begin with, the paper was along expected lines – there were no surprise elements and the pattern was a reflection of the previous years.
A brief analysis of each area of the English component is mentioned below.
Vocabulary:
There were six stand alone questions in this part; the head words were all very simple, commonly used words which the students would have found easy to relate to, as they are present in many of our handouts. Only one question might have been unfamiliar to the students. One of the words, (Blatant) had ambiguous options. The fill in the blank sentences were four in number and uncomplicated; choices too were easy picks. An average student too can achieve a good score in Vocabulary.
Functional Grammar:
There were 15 questions in all in this area, out of which seven were questions on Statements/ Conversation and eight were on filling the blanks with suitable verb/phrase/preposition. Common knowledge of the usage of prepositions and phrasal verbs would have made this part a cakewalk. The difficulty level can be pegged between easy and moderate. While our classes have covered all these areas and these questions would not have posed much difficulty in general, two questions from the conversation section may have been a little difficult for some students as it had some uncommon idiomatic expressions.
Reading comprehension:
There were three passages with a total of fifteen questions, with five questions per passage. The passages were all easy to read and uncomplicated in presentation. They were of about 200-250 words.
One passage was a discussion on the influence of Science on war, and how in the end, Science is terrible or terrific depending on the decisions we make. While the passage as such was easy, there were a couple of seemingly difficult questions.
The second passage was anecdotal, where the author describes his experience of facing a wild dog on a rainy night. It can be termed a very easy passage.
The third one was a thought on propagation of evil in the society, and this might have posed some difficulty for the students due to its subject matter.
Overall the section may be said to be easy to moderate.
Computer and Business Terminology:
Now coming to the questions on computer and business terminology - these are also a part of the Communication Ability section. Most of the questions on Computers were on expected lines. Three of these questions were easy and two were difficult. While the questions on flip flops and daisy chain were difficult, the questions on pixels, algorithm and modems were easy.
As regards the questions from Business Terminology, two of them were easy and two were of moderate difficult level. The question on EXIM policy had closed options making it a difficult question.
Overall, AP-ICET 2015 paper will be a low scoring paper because of the higher difficulty level of Mathematical Ability section and questions on Data Sufficiency. The English section and the Reasoning section were relatively much easier when compared to the section on Mathematical Ability.
