(Chat Transcript)

time gandalf: good evening sir..
sai: good evening...whts your query

priyanka143: good evening sir
sai: Good evening...whats your question?

ram: sir can u give me some tips to increase my reading speed while answering RC section....?
kranthi: attend our rc basics class read newspaper editorials regularly read on a variety of topics increase your vocabulary practice reading with time limit and follow techniques to reduce the chatter of ur mind.

cat aspirant: hello sir....We have approximately 4 months left for CAT ? so, what should be my daily schedule?? is it necessary to do all the sections daily??? plz comment as to how to apportion my time??
sai: Answered already

simplymba: Good Evening every one
sai: Good evening..whats your Question?

ss: good evening sir , in online aimcats we will be able to view entire section or one question at a time
sai: One question at a time

time gandalf: sir, An unauthorized information from pro metric said, that students can scroll down the questions like an e-paper..but the mail that I have received on student home page says" one question per page"......... sir, are you sure that CAT'09 will have only one question per page format??
sai: You are right....that is unauthorised information...lets wait for the IIMs to come out with their notification

ss: how to tackle di in online cat means how to gear up our speed
sai: Login for the Di chat next week

ram: sir ...how many hours I should prepare...for a day....please tell me how to schedule the time...
sai: Atleast 4-5 hrs a day

avinash: Good evening, I am a working professional and i normally don't get sufficient time for preparation. How can i plan my time efficiently for my preparation?
sai: Plan to sleep less and therefore increase the time on hand. Make a timetable for prep and stick to it.

kacks: Sir, I scored a meager 73%ile in verbal in free aimcat on 28th june but I scored 93%ile in cat 2008 in verbal. And generally I always score a little less in verbal in aimcats. How can I improve my efficiency in verbal section where my performance is inconsistent.
sai: Identify your weakness and work on it. For example if you arent doing well in Vocab or related areas you should start reading a word list and read newspapers/books to increase your vocab. If you have an issue with Grammar then work on the basics in the form of the TIME material or the Wren & Martin book to get a good idea abt the rules of grammar.

aman: good evening sir,sir pls suggest me to improve my vocab?
kranthi: add twenty words to your vocab every day.keep revising them till they become apart of your long term memory.read newspaper every day.focus on the usage of words.try mnemonics and associations.

simplymba: Sir as the pattern is changed, can you just give me a hint if there will be any questions of previous patterns as such??
sai: The Qs isnt clear.....what do you mean by previous patterns?

ss: whht shall i do to improve my di section as i am only test series student
kranthi: solve all our tests diligently.do a lot of problems on percentages and comparision of fractions.if u can solve the our material on di comprehensively that is enough.

priyanka143: sir, i am very poor in vocab section. and, if it is online, scrolling the pages while doing RCs is gonna b difficult. Can u suggest, how 2 improve in that?
sai: Only way is to do regular practice..start by working out the Online sectional tests on www.time4education.com. This should be sufficient to get the requisite skill

goldgany: hw to manage time for rc in online cat?
sai: Whether it is paper pencil test or online test time management remains the same. Allocate equal time to all sections and have a buffer time of around 20 min to tackle the most difficult section. Choose Qs on merit and try to avoid the difficult ones

sri: sir, At the outset I appreciate your efforts in enlightening the students on the CAT-09
kranthi: we are humbled.

cat aspirant: verbal is one of my stongest areas..but in the last aimcat i could give only 30 minurtes for verbal and hence i could score only 19 marks...in the previous aimcats i had attempted verbal first and hence lost out on the other sections ....so, which would attempting verbal 1st be good for me??
sai: Attempt your strongest section first and this is the best strategy

ram: Is snap notification released....?I saw it on Indian Express...but there is no information anywhere...
sai: Not yet...but it will released shortly and as soon as it is we will put it up in the 'Notifications' section on www.time4education.com

aman: sir as we have only 4 months left now what should be my schedule?
sai: Make a schedule and stick to it. Plan for around 6 hrs with approx. 2.5 hrs for QA and Verbal section and abt 1 hr for DI in a day

time gandalf: one more small query...for the first time, TIME has released about no of questions, is it the same way for the coming mocks? or it was this way because its the first??
sai: We expect the IIMs also to release the pattern before ethe test top ensure that it is an evening playing field and that the test takers on the first day are not at a disadvantage.

ss: And after online aimcat we will get how many question wrong or right or any other result????????
sai: Scores will be given after the test. Those who took the test today will get the score in a few days on the Student Home page

sri: sir, firstly I am in the dark about the calculation of the CUT-0FF MARKS in the CAT-09. Tell me how the CUT-OFF marks are calculated ?
sai: The cutoff marks are basically the 85%ile marks in the test. Ex: the mark scored by the 15th ranked person (in a test taken by 100 ppl) will be the cutoff. These cutoff marks are calculated after the exam is conducted

mba stud: sir,i have converted imdr(though classes already strted there),but i am hopeful of getting pumba though cet also(univ. rank-165,HU-pune univ.).plz. guide me which one to choose... imdr is NOT aicte approved,so will that be a problem??
kranthi: no as far as employment is concerned.

cat aspirant: would we get the results of the online aimcat right after the test??
sai: answered already

ram: sir ....during my preparation....I am getting stressed due to the difficulty of questions ...please tell me how to reduce stress during preparation & examination...
kranthi: try going to gym or play a sport or breathing exercises or yoga or meditation.most importantly start working towards the goal than worrying about it.

satwik: which are the most important and scoring schapters for the quant section and sir how to improve speed and accuracy.or does it come with time...?
sai: Answered already

pooja: sir, please help me.. i am very nervous. please answer my question.
kranthi: all most all the test takers shre the feeling you have. intensity varies learning to cope with nervousness is apart of preparation .Nowadays u have tv channels dedicated to teachings of yogamasters who keep crying hoarse about how to deal with the problem.keep ur self busy so that you do not get time to feel nervous.

sri: Tell me how is the PERCENTILE calculated in layman's terms ?
sai: Suppose 100 students take a test then the person who is ranked 1st (whether he got 100/100 or 30/100)is the one who gets a 100%ile. The person who is ranked 20 will get 80%ile as hge has defeated 80 other people out of the 100 who took the test

cat aspirant: sir, i know that it is a must to devote around 1 to 2 hours daily for reading but i am confused as to i should devote this time to reading novels , RC passages or some articles on various topics..
kranthi: read news paper editorials and read a magazine like frontline.

niki: hello..... im much more comfortable with the pen & paper mode....with online my speed tends to reduce....? how to over this difficulty ?
kranthi: every body is at same relative advantage/disadvantage .take all the online tests we provide di;ligently you will overcome cyber phobia.

simplymba: I would like to know if there will be any questions repeated from previous papers?
sai: Maybe....but generally CAT has never repeated Qs

s_kumawat: good evening sir, as i didn't hd maths in +2. n while prcticin maths i feel lost at most of d time
kranthi: that is a problem with most of the people who have lost touch with maths.i have personally known many people starting from scratch and managing to do well in the exam through persistent hard work.cheer up boy.

sd_here: Hi sir,I scored a total of 131 in the last free aimcat1019 with a sectional break up of qa 54 di 41 va 36.How would u rate this score and how do i go about my prep?
sai: Great score...work on verbal...it is your weakest section and needs more effort from your end

priyanka143: How to tackle the DI problems having line graphs, that require the usage of pencil?
sai: Login for Di chat next week

rohan: Sir reading on a paper is different from reading on a computer,.,.,my speed tends to reduce as i read on screen,.,please suggest how to overcome this problem
sai: This is a problem that everyone would face and thus it is not limited to you alone. One way to avoid it is to do a lot of Online reading to get used to the font size and get enough practice. read the RC links provided on www.time4education.com

kacks: Do the online sectional tests offered by time on student home page consists new questions or questions repeated from previous aimcats/cats etc.?
kranthi: a combo package.

satwik: sir wat should be my stategy to clear the cutoffs atlest for each section.i fail to reach the cutoff always in one section atleast
sai: Allocate equal amounts of time for each section

cat aspirant: as the cat has become online, do u think there will be a change in the type of questions asked in DI??/ like is there a possibility of calculation intensive DI getting less weightage and logical DI getting more??
sai: Cant speculate....I would say all kinds of Qs will have an equal chance of coming.....Dont have any preconceived notions about the test and prepare for all eventualities

ram: sir my friend got 90% in MAT and got seat in a business school which is ranked 92....how worth it is to leave that offer and go for the CAT & moreover he is 80% student in his academics...
sai: Generally most CAT institutes have a higher level of quality than the MAT instis and incase your friend is bright he should try to get into a top ranked CAT B-School than a MAT institute

niki: I am currently working and finding it really difficult to devote max. time for prep. A s per you, how many hours in day i must focus on the 3 sections, given the fact that my verbal is the strongest of the 3 sections and quant. being the weekest .?
sai: Atleast 2hrs for verbal; 1 hr to QA and abt 45 min for DI

rohit: SIR, i HAVE STARTED THE PREPARATION FOR CAT 3-4 DAYS AGO ONLY, IS NOW THE TIME SUFFICIENT TO DO THE FULL PREPARATION AND GET ABOVE 95 PERCENTILES?
sai: Yes it is.....provided you put in atleast 4-5 hours a day apart from attending the classes

cat aspirant: sir, i came toi know that cat will be conducted within a span of 10 days starting at the end of november...so would we be given the cgoice to select the test date and time as per our convenience ??
sai: Cant say....wait for the notification to come...in all probability that choice will not be given to students

image: I am a non-maths student. I have a great doubt about the PERCENTILE score. Hence please explain the method of computing it in a clear manner
kranthi: if 100 people take the exam and u got 2nd rank you have 98 percentile.

aman: sir, could u pls suggest me some books for enhancing reading skills and speed?
sai: Aman there is no specific 'book' for reading speed. Read articles, write ups across different areas and try to graduate to reading difficult passages on Social sciences, soiciology, pscychology, religion, culture, history etc. Read the RC links on www.time4education.com and www.magportal.com

sunny: sir, which business paper should i read? how is MINT from HT
sai: It is good but a better choice would be Economic Times

simplymba: Sir, as the time is short , instead of concentrating on all the topics, can you suggest "areas of concentration" for better results??
sai: This is what you should avoid. there is nothing called an 'important' chapter or area in any section in CAT. prepare for all topics in all areas in all sections.

rohan: Sir My score was 105 in aimcat 1019 with a 96 percentile,.,..,what should be my strategy from now on and how to go about from here till the d day
sai: Read the Annual issue of MBA Education & Careers for the prep plan for the next 3-4 months leading to CAT

cat aspirant: how many RC passages should we read daily from the links to RC passages given on your site?? the passages are really very lenghty....
sai: Atleast around 3-4

cat aspirant: i got 89 percentile in the last aimcat....do u think i can score well above 95 in the coming tests??
kranthi: yes but u must work towards it.

ram: Sir...how will be the competition in JMET......Is JMET paper pencil test or computer based test this year....?IS preparation for CAT is sufficient for JMET...?
sai: Read the analysis of JMET on www.time4education.com under the Test Analysis section. Wait for the notification of JMET to come. CAT prep is sufficient for JMET...competition is quite high in JMET as the number of seats is quite low

sd_here: sir the cat09 will surely not be adaptive as per the iim notification... is that correct?
kranthi: yes.

rohit: sir, is mathematics read in class 11th and 12th also necessary for CAT?
kranthi: we have mentioned in our maths books what topics you must prepare.trust us and our material.

pooja: sir/ mam please answer my question?..
sai: Answered already

raju: Sir, when will by which month notification of cat will be coming
sai: Around August end as per the IIMs

krc9p615: SIR can we get the result of online mack cat also.
sai: Result of Online Mock will be available

image: sir, score means what ? if one scored 105 in the aimcat, How many questions would he answer? Because does 'score' means 'marks" ?
sai: depends on the accuracy level. You can attempt 26 get all correct and get a score of 104..you csn attempt 35 questions with around 28 correct to get a similar score and so on. Score means marks

sunny: sir, which business newspaper shoud i read? how is MINT from HT?
kranthi: the economic times.

mukesh: hELLO SIR WOULD THE CAT DATES GET EXTENDED TO DECEMBER OR THEY WILL WIND UP IN NOVEMBER ITSELF
sai: It will be in the last week of Nov-1st Week of Dec as per the IIMs

cat aspirant: will giving the mat this september be helpful to me??/ if so, should i give it in the paper pencil format or the online format??
kranthi: yes u can use it to get a feel of real exam.go for whichever format u r comfy with.

satwik: which are the most important and scoring chapters for the quant section and sir how to improve speed and accuracy.or does it come with time...?morover sir i wanted to know whether doing only time material is sufficient for all sections
sai: Answered

alekhya: Sir,i have a habit of marking da questions as per my convinience..I mark them as quit,postpone...how can i do dat in onlline test exam.?
kranthi: you write the same on rough sheet provided to you.

rohan: sir u suggested annual issue of MBA education and careers,.,.is it available easily everywhere or there is a specific place for it.,,.,
sai: Available free for all full time students of TIME. Otherwise purchase it from a book stall or magazine stall

cat aspirant: in the online format would it be good to have a look at the questions first before attempting or should i start with the first question that appears on the screen?? it will take a lot of time to just have a glance at the different q's..
sai: It will be a good idea to glance through the Qs in around 2 min before attempting any section

pooja: mam please answer my question. i have posted it very early..Sir, i have missed my appointment letter and salary slip. i have only releaving letter of my company which mention my duration of work and designation in the organation. is releaving letter sufficient as a proof of my experience ? Or i must have appointment letter and salary slip. Please guide me.
sai: Salary slips and appointment letter are quite important. if you donnt have the appointment letter then the 1st and last salary slip are generally accepted as proof of your work

sunny: sir,i have not started my CAT preparation because of some problems...sir is it too late for me?...what can be my schedule from now on to bell the cat.. thanks!
sai: Answered already

ram: I completed graduation in may 2008...will this gap reduces my chances to get seat in IIMs...
sai: no difference whatsoever as long as you meet the %ile requirements of the IIMs

sd_here: sir what percentile in the aimcats will depict a good chance of getting a good CAT score and calls from iim?
kranthi: try to be in the top 20 percent consistently with an occasional foray into top 10 percent.there are innumerable cases where people never crossed 90 percentile in any of aimcats but managed to do so in actual cat.

raju: Sir, like i work in an organisation and dont have much time to prepare as cat is may be after 5 months ? so will this will be enough if i put in 6hrs per day
kranthi: 6hra aday of quality time is more than any working guy can put.

alekhya: sir in DI,certain questions are in the form of tables...where in we can answer them on the paper itself...but if its online..how can we solve them...dont such questions take time...
sai: Login to the chat next week on DI. BTW such Qs will take time for those who are not used to doing mental calculations and have an issue with speed math problems. So start working on your speed and calculations part.

jv: for how many hours a day should our preparation be oriented as there are only 4 months left?
sai: Around 5-6 hrs a day if you are scoring less than 70%ile

yatish: hello...i got only 40 in my AIMCAT1019...i am not able to score more..i study 2-3 hr a day..but still??help
sai: Increase the time to abt 5-6 hrs a day. 2-3 hrs will not be sufficient if you are weak in the different subject areas.

kasturi: good evening sir.... is it important to read ebooks or is it enough to stick to the Paper books for Verbal Practice?
sai: It s a good idea to read e-books as well

pooja: no u have not answered my question regarding releaving letter...
sai: Answered

rohit: SIR, I AM A FRESHER AND HAVE NO WORK EXPERIENCE, WILLIT AFFECT MY ADMISSION TO IIM'S OR ANY OTHER MANAGEMENT COLLEGES?
sai: No it will not. Getting a high score in CAT..Around 99+ %ile is what you should aim for.

jv: are the prev year materials plus the mock cats sufficient?
sai: Should be good enough

sunny: hi sai...plz tell how to tackle the GK section in SNAP...apart from newspapers what else can we read?
sai: Read an economics newspaper, magazines like MBA Education & Careers and a yearbook like Malayali Manorama

preeti: HELO SIR, I AM WORKING AT PRESENT .I DNT GET MUCH TIME TO PRACTICE .SO HOW SHOULD IGET PREPARED FOR THESE ONLINE TESTS?IT WOULD BE GREAT IF U SUGGEST ME
sai: There is no shortcut method of preparing for CAT. You will have to spend a lot more time if you are to have a realistic chance of getting into a top B-School

alekhya: Sir,in wat way is economic times useful for us?because i dont understand things given in it
kranthi: attend the eco basics seminar we conduct.refer to a economics and stock market dictionary.

caraspirant09: Good Evening Sir... Whenever i write any exam, i dont feel like attempting the RC's, as i feel it takes lot of time than the other single questions. How do i rectify it?
sai: Force yourself to attempt them. Control your mind and let it not control you. The choice is in your hands isnt it?

ram: sir are extra curricular activities compulsory to get seat in IIMs ..? If so which type of activities do u prefer....?
kranthi: they are not compulsory.

tuhin: sir in aimcat 1019 i did 7 ques in qa wid 100% accu n 8 ques in di wid 100% accu.i am in a dilemma whether 2 go for accuracy or have a go .
sai: have a go because your attempts are too low

aman: sir there are Q's in gemtry and di la sec in which there are figures or tables are given, how will we tackle this type of Q's?
sai: The way you would in a normal paper & pencil test. it might be a good idea to draw the rough figure in the scratch sheets and then solve it.

sunny: sir ,apart from THE HINDU which newspaper is good for english...i found hindu quiet boring..
sai: Reading boring papers will prepare u wonderfully for CAT as the passages on CAT are also extremely boring

krc9p615: SIR i m a time student.i want to know whether there is a provision that we will be provided with a book in which there are only difficult problems of D.I. or quant.the questions provided in sm101022 are generally quiet easy than those qiven in aimcats!
sai: The TPBs have such Qs

tejal: The main problem I have is with DI&DS section. I usually leave the section for the last as I find it the most difficult, and I am not able to manage my time when I come to it. I could clear the cut-offs for quant & verbal in my last aimcat, but scored 0 in DI&DS. Can you please tell me how to go about preparing for this section. Are there any books that can help me in this? What can I do to approach this section in the right way?
sai: Work on the basics and allocate enough time to this section to clear it. Give it atleast 45 min and you will not run into problems like this. You arent doing well because you have an inherent weakness in this area and also not working on it.

sd_here: sir, how should i go about di i have solved the 2 basic sm booklets almost completely barring one or two sets here and there...where can i get more questions to solve?are there any more di booklets u will provide?should solvin 4m previous yr cay n aimcats papers be helpful?I am a full time student
sai: The TPBs and the AIMCAts are other sources of high quality Qs. You should also go thru the 90 Sectional tests

rohan: sir there was a article in HINDU about how cat will be conductes this year.,.,.,.,have u read that article.,.,was all that was written there really a notification from iims.
sai: the IIms have issued a notification and it is available on www.time4education.com on the Home page.

neil: will cat get extended to DECEMBER?
kranthi: wait for notification we are not authorized spokespersons of iims.

satwik: which are the most important and scoring chapters for the quant section and sir how to improve speed and accuracy.or does it come with time...?morover sir i wanted to know whether doing only time material is sufficient for all sections sir plz reply............
kranthi: all topics are important and our material is sufficient.

satwik: which are the most important and scoring chapters for the quant section and sir how to improve speed and accuracy.or does it come with time...?morover sir i wanted to know whether doing only time material is sufficient for all sections sir plz reply............
sai: TIME material is sufficient. There is nothing like an important chapter or a scoring chapter as the IIMs are unpredictable in the way they set the paper. Prepare for all chapters.

satwik: which are the most important and scoring chapters for the quant section and sir how to improve speed and accuracy.or does it come with time...?morover sir i wanted to know whether doing only time material is sufficient for all sections sir plz reply............

sai: Answered already. refer to the chat transcript

megha: hi... it seems online CAT is going to be really difficult as it is much more time consuming as we have to solve in an extra supplement ant then crack the Q
sai: If that is the case then it is going to be equally difficult for everyone. Is it going to be easy for a select few and more difficult for the others?

garima_singh725: and sir whats the frequency of aimcat as in generally after how many weeks aimcat is conducted?
sai: generally one per week

sat: hello sir. if i start preparing now onwards, can i get 99+ percentile? And for that how much time should i devote? in the last cat i had 95%ile.
kranthi: i can guarantee that if u take the onus of fulfilling my prophecy on yourself.give ur best shot let us see--------

alekhya: sir is the book how to read better and faster by norman lewis useful for making a gud score in RC's
kranthi: to a very limited extent.no harm if you read it.

preeti: HELO SIR, PLEASE DO REPLY TO MY QUESTION.IF I START PREPARING FOR CAT FROM NOW WILL IT BE SUFFICIENT TO CRACK CAT BYNOVEMBER END?I KNOW IT DEPENDA ON THE INDVIDUALS LEVEL BUT I JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY HOURS SHULD ONE SPEND IF ONE STARTS HIS PREPARATION AT THIS STAGE?

sai: Around 95 in AIMCATs means that you are in with a chance at the IIMs

nivvi: Sir,when writing the aimcats I am not able to attempt any section properly because of time pressure.....n I ended up with below the cut off mark in the last aimcat..when I try them at home I am able to do better....What do you suggest me to overcome my time pressure?
sai: Write more AIMCATs under the same conditions

niki: PLZ ANWER MY QUESTION ...ITS VERY IP. FOR ME TO KNOW EXPERT'S ADVICE ON THIS.

abhishek: sir the very first online test and we have to deal with 50 VA questions!!! A bit too much for the starters I guess.... but sir in scenarios when we have 2 marks for some questions and 4 for some, which all should be attempted first???
sai: The strategy is always to go for the Qs that u are comfortable with and not just starting with the 4 markers because they are important

sunny: sir,i am an advanced correspondence student. should i complete my material and then start giving mock papers or should i give them side by side
sai: Side by side

dibz: will there b time limit 4 each questio/section??can v return bck 2 d same unansd ques?

selva: HI...whats the basic diff between doing an MBA in India and Abroad.... as none of the IIM's are featured in the top 100 MBA colleges in the world...

sat: what are the prerequisite for a good verbal score?
sai: Answered already

sai: Analyse AIMCATs

sharad: does speed reduces when we are taking online exam specially in rc?
