amitava:
GD is something which needs a lot of time to be good at. PI is something whoch is very innate. If someone is poor at both , how do you think he can improve it in such a short duration?
gautam:
Hi Amitava,
Yes you do require quite a bit of practice for GD and PI. But I have noticed that students show remarkable improvement over the duration of the GD/PI sessions. So, the moral of the story is that It is Doable. No doubt about it. Just follow the instructions given in the sessions and you will be home and dry.
|
|
laxmi:
Sir, How to start preparing for GD/PI?
When will GD/PI briefcase be available.
Also what is the probable time frame for the IIMs GD/PI?
gautam:
Hi Laxmi,
Start by reading newspapers. Both general and biz. Keep yourself updated on whatever is happening in the world around you.
|

gautam:
Hi Vinay,
Start by reading newspapers. Both general and biz. Make a list of current affairs (For e.g. Read up whatever you can find in Copenhagen, the recession etc. ) and start to collect material on the same. It will stand you in good stead in the GD/PI process.

Hi Gd...,
I guess it is more a case of nerves rather than any inherent flaw in your language skills. I feel practice will ensure that you get rid of these issues. Don't worry a lot of people have/had problems similar to yours. And some of them are in the better B-schools. ;-)

nervousness while speaking in a group is a common problem - you're not alone. two things help - good preparation (if you know what you're talking about, you'll feel confident). The other is some speaking practice - even in normal discussion please try to present your reasons well, try to analyse your info and present that analysis. your friends might wonder why, but they'll soon find you a pretty clear speaker. try it !!

hi sir n ma'm what would you suggest to a candidate from non english background having average communication skills going to face GD/PI ?
gautam:
Hi Kumar,
What is important in a GD is your ability to clearly understand the topic and analyze the same. Language while important is not of paramount importance. In fact speaking in simple English is what is recommended. So don't be very conscious of your language skills. If you have come this far rest assured you have the skills to make an impact in the GD/PI.

|
fairy:
@sai sir how is it possible dat the cutoff for for isc is 24 when all ins predicted it too be less than 20
saikumar:
Cut-offs are predicted based on what the institute is known to do from past data. If IRMA decides to put a higher cutoff (in ISC for example) then it is their prerogative and no one can predict such a thing up front. The point is IRMA feels that with such high cutoffs it will still be able to call a significant number of students.

GD/PI preparation will not be institute specific. You need to be acquainted with current affairs in a fairly broad range so it helps to start early. This preparation will help you irrespective of the insti whose GD you are attending.
|
|
siddharth:
should I read some GK books for GD/PI? If yes, please name one.

For GDs general reading is more important. GK books will only give you a snapshot view of topics. Good for written tests not for a GD.

ghosh:
I have attempted around 36-38 questions in CAT with 12 each questions in all 3 sections, and i expect 80% accuracy. What can be my percentile?
And how shall i start preparing for GD-PI ,as i am desperate for admission this year.I used to not read newspapers daily, but recently started reading TIMES,what can i do to know all that happened around the world in the last 12 months..What are the news i should concentrate on reading ?Can you suggest any site ?
saikumar:
percentile cannot be predicted. read the MBA E&C magazine. Goto a library and read the old magazines to come upto date.

BUT SIR, HE KEPT ON BLABBERING CONTINUOUSLY.... STILL HE WAS SELECTED....
I JUST SPOKE TO THE POINT AND WAS ALSO SELECTED.... WAT DOES TIS MEAN ???/
gautam:
Maybe he was not talking such un-adulterated nonsense as you think. The panel looks at content, communication, group dynamics and leadership skills He might have scored in some of these areas.

irmacatsnapxana:
someone sujested me that it is better to chime in gd rather than start by opposing others . but does this stratgy always works. people says say ok to everything , is this ok
gautam:
Enter a GD about 5/6 times. Make your point and then move out. If you merely oppose what others are saying then there will not be too much of value add. You must also tell the group what you think.

A neutral accent that is understood by all should be used. As far as vocab is concerned adopt the K.I.S.S. formula. Keep It Short and Simple

snap-it:
SO I WANTED TO ASK THAT IN THE MBA GD's IF I SPEAK ONLY "TO THE POINT" THINGS, DO I HOLD A CHANCE ALTHOUGH NOT QUANTITY BUT QUALITY ??????????
gautam:
Yes. But perception also matters. being too succinct also might not be appreciated. What needs to be done is to enter the GD about 5/6 times and speak for about 20-30 seconds. Make your point and move out.

iimaspirant:
Sir, Why has TIME decided not to come out with a percentile predicetion for CAT this year..I mean till last year it used to come out with a pretty accurate prediction which was very helpful..........why desert ur students this year Sir, especilly this year after the CBT - CAT fiasco when all the students are more restless.....Plz reply sir...can we expect a percentile prediction from TIME even now or all the hope has been lost ??? :-(
saikumar:
On what basis can this percentile predictor come out. Till last year there was a Qs paper based on which a key was generated and then using that key students got their score using which we could predict the approx. percentile. There is NO such handle available to predict the percentiles this year.
