Last minute tips for CAT2009!!
(Chat Transcript)

sk: Sir how to score well in English section?
arkss: Look for the easier questions in RC and then look at answering the questions in the section that you can

kac9b032: sir how is IIFM bhopal, can u plz tell me about its placements and cut-off? does doing PGDFM mean i am reducing my chances to work in bfsi ever? basically i wanted to know wether IIFM will be a good choice?
sai: It is a good institute and cutoff is around 60%ile. chances to work in other sectors reduce as it is a sectoral program catering to FM. If you have a passion for FM it will be a good choice otherwise not.

asni.wings: hi teachers...any tip to reduce negatives in english ???
arkss: Answer the questions that you can manage to answer first and then look for the questions that you are fairly confident of answering correctly. Do not guess wildly !!!

hmm: are qat, dex, dat,tg,tpb papers of cat level?m practisin them as advised by faculty..is it fine?
sai: They are very good papers and can be practiced.

kac9b032: sir, cut-off and placements for SIBM-b ?
sai: Cutoff depends on Difficulty level of paper and placements will be good as it has the Symbiosis brand name.

surbhi: hello sir ....... what should be done in this last four days??????
sai: AIMCAT revision and relaxation

sg: Gud evening sir, sir I have revised the last years as well as this years AIMCAT papers. Also i have completed the "test a day".Now,I am revising the AIMCAT papers topic wise for (QA and DI) and also planning to take 3 to 4 MC's and CRT's in next two weeks. Sir please tell me is this sufficient for last two weeks? please answer..thank u..
sai: YES it is.

pandeyji: Sir last minute tips for DI ??
arkss: Look at the questions from the AIMCATs and revise them

hari: Any tips on English preps in the last one week? My accuracy in english keeps fluctuating a lot..pls help
rahul: in the next 6 days, browse through all the RCs but dont answer the qs. observe the coherence between the paras while reading. go through the coherence, FIJs, summary, LCIF, upstream-downstream qs, carefully observing coehernce and logic links. go through the grammar handouts and your class notes. Relax on the last day. On Dday, the familiarity factor should help you sail through the VA section. Best of luck :)

ams: Sir, IFMR or LIBA?
sai: LIBA

vicky: Sir, my percentile in all the aimcats has never crossed 60 percentile though at times I clear the cut off in any one of the 3 sections. I have planned to apply for BIM trichy which had a cutoff of 70 percentile in CAT for mbc students. Now with just 7 days to go for my exam (I am writing CAT on dec 2) pls guide on how my preparation should be for the 7 days ahead
arkss: Vicky, do not try to learn anything new in these last few days. Concentreate on revising what you already know. Keep your spirits up !!!

royalankur: what to do in these last 4-5dayz
sai: Answered already. Refer to the transcript.

joy: sir, hw can we improve on the sequencing ques?
rahul: sequencing or coherence qs are best done by reading all the sentences and wrking out a rough coherence pattern in 30-45 secs. the concluding sentence might be fixd so you can apply the principles of facts and inference. after wrking out the coherence look at the options. the one which matches closest to your decision could be revised and the marked.

hmm: m weak in reasoning questions...ne tips on improvin in such short time...
gulshan: search for stand alone questions practice analytical reasoning puzzles from lot 2 material

atrish: Hi sir , i want to know wht to revise in the last days, specially in english
sai: Work on AIMCATs. Nothing specific to target in the last few days.

$$kk..: sir..my aimcats %ile on an avg is70-72...should i go fr NMAT or XAT???
sai: Both XAT and NMAT

joy: sir, hw can we improve on the sequencing ques?
rahul: Para sequencing is a coherence affair. read through the sentences. look for direct links and get the general concept in mind and fix a coherence. the chances are that the concluding or the opening sentence might be fixed. So do work out the fact inference link in sequencing. then look at the options. the one which has a clposest match to your option could be gone over and if you are confident , mark it. a question should not take more than 2 mins. if it does, abandon it!

bharath: some tips to improve score in english..normally i score around 70 percentile in aimcats..other sections i get good score...How to improve english score can i clear english cut off..i have cleared in aimcats only 4 times..
rahul: the most dependable section is the coherence section which includes para formation, completing the para, FIJ, upstream-downstream etc. The vocab and the grammar section should be gone over first if the confidence is there in the first reading, go ahead. if not, abandon. then go to the coherence section and pick up your marks. keep abt 20-25 mins for at least 2 RCs, 5-6 mins to read the passage and abt 7 mins to answer the qs.attempt the factual qs first. If you do this, cutoff should not be a real problem.

fewdaysleft: For DI, am doing this years and last years aim cats apart from 9 original cats and 9 mock cats.Is this sufficient?
sai: Should be OK

asni.wings: how about quant...how to ensure to clear the cut-off?
gulshan: you should ensure that you do not leave the easy questions, to achieve this give 10mins for every block of 5 questions(just an example)

ams: Confused to fill forms under SNAP. Kindly suggest which colleges to apply in SNAP? Tell about worthy ones.
sai: SIBM, SCMHRD, SIIB

subho87: Hi sir.I know it is not the place to ask this question but i could not connect yesterday due to net failure.in the iift exam this sunday i got 3.2 in gk,5.4 in maths, 9 in lr/di,13.6 in rc/va and oa 31.2.is it in any case possible for me to get a call even from iift kolkata??i just cant get this out of my head and focus on cat.

sai: Use the review mode button and see all Qs

shruti: what should be done in last 6 days
rahul: Dont do anything on the last day. you need to relax and unwind. the remaining 5 days browse through the last 6-7 AIMCATS. Go over the formulaes on QUANT, jot them on a piece of paper. Go over DI caselets, read the RC passages more like essays and not for answering qs. A little bit of familiarity factor will soothe your nerves on the Dday. Relax and attempt CAT as just another AIMCAT! :)

rajuwithu: i have 10 more dayz time, is revising aimcats and prev cats a best option in last 10 days?
arkss: Yes, Raju.

rachit: Sir, what kind of difficulty level can we expect in actual CAT papers as compared to our Aimcats?
rahul: the same. If not a little lower. your percentile in CAT should be arnd 10-15 percentile higher than the AIMCAT ones.

sav: hello sir,I am facing difficulties in my quant section. When I solve the questions during analysis i get most of them right...some even in less than 2mins...i dont seem to get that accuracy and speed during the actual exam..is this a fundamental problem..how can i get better?
gulshan: Hi Sav, Think u are almost bthere. U just need to take it easy. Do not press ur own panic button. First try Qs from topics ur are super confident. U will do well.

arkss: Please revise the AIMCAT DI questions.

akash modi: i have problem with english paragraph assembling and i have a great fear of how to clear enligsh cutoff please suggest me some easier way
rahul: Para sequencing is a coherence affair. read through the sentences. look for direct links and get the general concept in mind and fix a coherence. the chances are that the concluding or the opening sentence might be fixed. So do work out the fact inference link in sequencing. then look at the options. the one which has a clposest match to your option could be gone over and if you are confident , mark it. a question should not take more than 2 mins. if it does, abandon it! the most dependable section is the coherence section which includes para formation, completing the para, FIJ, upstream-downstream etc. If you do this, cutoff should not be a real problem.

shruti: what should be done on last day?
sai: Watch a few movies and relax with friends.

santosh: i was unable to answer rc questions wat can i do in these few days
rahul: go over the RCs in the AIMCATS. wrk out a strength area. you could be good at ecponomics and business passages or science based passages. On the Dday, go through the first paras of all RCs. the familiarity factor will help you to read and comrehend at a decent speed. Fix 2-3 passages. Spend abt 10 mins per passage. after reading go through the qs. first attempt the tonal qs which do not need a relook, then attempt the factual qs and look at the inferential ones. please go through the options carefully and eliminate the close options through the verbal premise of the options. Best of luck for CAT :)

ams: Is it possible to clear quant section of JMET without doing higher maths?
sai: Not very easy

aimcat: sir, will i be selected in IIM's?
sai: YES

fewdaysleft: Hi, I was getting in the 85-98 range in aimcats( fluctuating ), I took a few weeks off and prepared again, now am doing original cats , and am gettingclose to 6 IIM call level.. But am afraid this is because the types in orginal cat have already been covered in basics and mc/crts.. How do I gauge my performance now since most of the aimcats are also over? And what are my chances for the IIMs?
gulshan: People find our AIMCAT series to be generally of a higher level. Hence you definitely are on the right track, considering that you are very comfy with prev CAT questions. Just try and relax at this point and revise concepts. Give it your best shot on the D-day. Good luck

kittu: sir....is tiss paper very diff to clear... is it more tough than cat
sai: It is one of the easiest of the exams. CAT prep is more than sufficient to clear it.

abc: sir, wat kind of gk is asked in snap n xat?? please tell me some good source...
gulshan: General & business GK. Get hold of last 9 months of a general & business magazine. Still better go through Management & careers magazine published by TRISHNA(subsidiary of TIME)

hitesh: Sir, I am unable to clear cutoffs in DI.Please guide me what should I do now with just 12 days left as I am taking CAT on 7th Dec.
gulshan: 1st understand the data representation of the DI set then select the easiest question from the set and proceed. else go for the next set practice test a day online for time students. Best of luck

sai: Slightly easier than CAT

cool: which colleges to apply for a percentile range 90-95??? i haven't done well in IIFT..wat now??
sai: MDI, SPJain, IMI, IMT, BIM. Wait for a call from IIFT and concentrate on doing well in the other exams.

nik: sir,i had been doin well in english......but for the last two aimcats...ive been gettin a negative score..... :(((( am tensed....
gulshan: You have yourself answered the question. Please relax- tension drastically reduces anyones performance. Good luck

vishal: any tips for quant section...i seem to do some silly mistakes nd lose my marks...
gulshan: Please keep your calm while answering th questions - this will ensure most of your silly mistakes are avoided. Also please concentrate on the question at hand instead of thinking of the overall piture of the paper. Also understand the type of mistakes u maske for eg. calculation, comprehension etc and be careful about it. Good luck.

sp: my di %iles are above 90 every time but in 1022 aimcat i jus scored 5 marks.what can i expect on D-day
gulshan: If your scores have been consistently above 90 that is what you should expect. It is quite possible that for one particular mock you got stressed out/nervous. Keep your cool - I am sure you will do well. Good luck!

nitin: hello sir...what should be the method of practice for DI/LR in last few days so that it is benificial for me on the D day??
gulshan: Go through the questions in AIMCAT & previous CAT papers

catch09: sir how to improve score in english...??

nomisanand: sir i hav done the sms ,advanced sms and TPBS. Is it enough that i go thru the aimcats in the remaining days???
kk: Yes, group questions from each pattern/type of DI and LA and review them. Review concepts in QA

tycoon: is it preferable to go through the word lists given in ur website or do somting mor useful?
kk: This is not the time to do vocab building. Concentrate on other things

123: Pls reply to my questions, they get unanswered from last few chat..... 1. I am getting around 80 percentile in AIMCAT,so what percentile can i expect in CAT 2009 2.What should be my next few days strategy as my CAT Is on 2,Dec 3.How many MOCK cat should i give before 2,Dec Pls reply sir,m waiting from last few chats....................
arkss: 123, your score depends on what you do on D-day. If you continue with your current performance, you should get 90+ percentile in the actual CAT. Write a max of 3 more tests.

ams: without work exp, SIIB or SITM or SIOM?
sai: SIIB and SITM are good.

sat: plz arrange BIM XIMB SCMHRD according to their overall ranking.
rahul: in the same order as you have written.

sai: how to boost up the confidence for DI??
sai: revise AIMCATs and try to understand the logic used in solving the Qs.

nikku: sir is it enough to go through the 20 aimcat papers & 5 crt's & 12 mock cat as revision these 5 days?
kk: That is too much and will result in fatigue. You need to be fresh on the day of CAT. Be confident that you have done your bit. It is time to unwind. Revise only what is absolutely necessary.

tushar: sir after tremendous practice i am not able to increase my speed.. what shld i do.. its the only hurdle for me..
gulshan: with 60 to 70 Q's in cat it is more of accuracy than speed that will matter, knowing your limitation focus on accuracy and do not panic if your attempts are not very high. Best of luck

yashodhank: is it ok to take a test every 2/3 days and keep on revisibg the basics as well as questions sets or is it necessary to give a test every day from now on plz. reply
gulshan: The first option is a better choice. DO not take a test in the last two days. Please relax.

yashodhank: is it ok to take a test every 2/3 days and keep on revisibg the basics as well as questions sets or is it necessary to give a test every day from now on plz. reply
rahul: my advice would be to just take one or two tests in this last week. Browse through the previous tests.

yashodhank: is it ok to take a test every 2/3 days and keep on revisibg the basics as well as questions sets or is it necessary to give a test every day from now on plz. reply
kk: Don't do much work on the last tow days before CAT so that you are mentally fresh for the exam. On the other days, revise and consolidate the areas where you feel you need to build on. Suggest revision of key areas more than taking new tests

ramaneffect: it is mentioned that you cannot carry (wear ) watch Is it true? then only source of time is monitor? we need to make ourself accustomed to that??
gulshan: Yes, it is true.

nikku: sir SIMC OR SITM
rahul: if you have a tech bakcground, then SITM. if your verbals are good and you are look for the media, then SIMC.

nomisanand: sir by reviewing the concepts do you mean that i have to work out the basic sms again. or is it enough to go through the formulas and results that i have noted down while my basic prep
arkss: There is not enough time to go back to your basics. Focus on what you know and consolidate on them.

rajeevan: Sir I am not able to improve my verbal scores in the last few aimcats can u suggest me the best way to crack verbal..?
rahul: I have already answered this question on this forum. Read below.

kk: Yes, provided you meet the cut off in VA

mihir: sir,why are MC's very easy.one can very easily clear all the cut offs .do they really reflect the actual CAT papers?
sai: MCs are replicas of old CAT papers and they indeed look easy at this advanced level of preparation

gagan: sir what change can we expect in quant ,di and verbal section in terms of difficulty level this time since its going offline
arkss: If you are compyter savvy and can read the scrren easily, there will be no difference.

sai: Will be tough

asni.wings: last year SNAP was little on tougher side, can we expect the same this year too? plz reply sir...thankyou...
