Questions and Answers

rohit: when you are going to upload solution
Sourajit: answer key will be uploaded within the next 60 mins

prince: iim cut offs
Bala: VA & RC - 18; DI - 32; QA - 20.... Provisional cut-offs. May be subject to minor revision

sumit: waht r expected cutoff for maths
Bala: Maths in particular could be expected to be around 20

krit: hello pls give over all scores to make it to iims and the sectional requirements
Sourajit: va-> 26 di->32 qa->26, but the IIMs also sees into academic profile, work ex profile, makes a composite score then gives calls,

ps1234: whats the answer of the question for 2 cities which had an aeroplane connecting them...wont it be it cannot be determined as TIME ZONES were not given
Bala: The logic is that the difference in time between time zones is one of the 2 unknowns with the speed of the cruise airplane being the other.

varun: on what basis u have decided this cutoffs
Sourajit: its based on past CAT papers difficulty level, what was the cut-offs that year, a sample pooling, plus some internal formulaes we have of calculation based on easy medium difficult questions in the paper

givenup: How can the cut of Quant section be this low there were many doable questions I find data interpretation harder instead of quant
Bala: In my opinion, even some of the doable questions would have taken a good amount of time leading to fewer questions attempted. It would also help to factor in errors made under pressure. Plus the pressure in general leaves a lot of us blank even on simple questions.

shiva: hello all! is any TIME Faculty online here now?
Sourajit: yes shiva.. whats ur question

divya: hi...i have attempted 9 questions and as far i have discussed all of them are right????wat do you have to say
Bala: What more can I say than "Good for you! Hope you have done other sections also equally well."

lipu: 1/m+4/n=1/12,where,n is an odd integer?
Raghunath: answer is three

dhivi: cutoff for va,di quant
Sourajit: REVISED CUT_OFFS according to T.I.M.E: VA: 18-20; DI: 30-32; QA: 19-21; OVERALL: 88-90

varun: on what basis have u decided these cutoffs?
Bala: Apart from what Sourajit said, we all work out the paper, take a look at what we have been able to do, use that as a benchmark to assess questions and then project to what a student would be able to do under actual test conditions (we work it out in the cool confines of our office).

manish: sir as per PT solution i am getting 53..QA--10, DI--33,VA--10 where can i apply.work exp - 2yrs
Sourajit: depends from B-School to B-School... composite score looks good though looks lower in English... sometimes a B-School lowers the cut-off in a section.. so hang in there and also check ur answers with T.I.M.E. key

parul: what was the ans of ques value of f(9) given f(1) f(n) =n2f(n).
Bala: My working out told me 80. The trick is that after 2 or 3 rounds of iteration, you will see that the dividing factor (for 2400) goes as 3, 6, 10.... my immediate guess was that the difference is in AP. Checked it out with 5 and then sealed it.

timestudent: what is th answer for Miso ques
Sourajit: 18

gaurav: tel one thing if IIMA is saying that 25% in individual section is must then how do u ppl say revised cut off in verbal 18-20 n QA 19-21
Bala: The cut-off is for a call from at least one of the IIMs; not from all of them. Even last year, students who got lower than IIMA's cut-offs got shortlisted by other IIMs

abhi: booklet 444 question 10 ......is answer ZERO ??
Sourajit: nopes.. answer is ONE (7744 is the number)

yogendra: hello .. sir what was the ans to this ques . How many 4 digit nos. AABB sort of which are perfect square ?
Sourajit: ONE (7744)

divya: so overall im expecting a 88+ can i expect a call from atleast one iim?
Bala: Possible. Don't lose heart at this stage especially if you are planning to appear for other exams

vikrant: how come answer is three?? it should be six!!
Raghunath: the given expession becomes (n-48)(m-12)=576.if n has to be odd then n-8 has to be odd. 576 can be wriiten as product of 2 factors ( 1*576,3*192,9*64). therefore n-48 can be 1,3, 64

niranjan: sir does d cut-off mentioned apply to freshers too? accdng to PT I have VA-55 DI-61 and QA-24.. any iim calls on a QA score of 24?? (fresher)
Sourajit: u are doing cool with the cut-offs but do verify the key with T.I.M.E. key

abhi: two varieties of tea equal wat is the answer
Sourajit: May 20

pradjumna: 333 set number...21st quest anser is 24 yrs
Raghunath: yes

batty: Sir, i am getting 54 in DI (pretty sure) and high likely to cross 30 in VA but in quans i fumbled and am wandering between 19 and 27, because i am not sure if i copied the answer from my rough sheet to answer sheet, how reliable is the quans cutoff (the other institutes are scaring me with their quans cutoffs)
Bala: In the past, we have always been accused of quoting low cut-offs and have invariably been vindicated by the results. The main point is that there is a difference between me sitting at home and working out the paper without any pressure and you doing the same under test conditions with a sword hanging over your neck.

vini: what should be the answer for ages problem?
Sourajit: 24

timestudent: is "-159 " answer for quad func attains max 0f 3 at x=1 ques
Bala: yes

abhilasha: for the question on currency..i.e, miso in how many ways can we pay 107 misos...i marked 17..but i guess the answer sud be 18..is it??
Raghunath: the answer is 18

Supriya: hello raghunath sir... :)
Raghunath: yes how did you do

sanjib: hello sir I got QA-35 DI-57, VA-11 whivh inst should i go 4
Sourajit: MDI, IMI, FORE, TAPMI, IMT, LBS, KJS, IISWBM

givenup: I am getting 35 in Quant but I have screwed DI(I am really bad at it) Is there any institute which will not be having cut off for DI or low cut off for DI. Which IIM had the least cutoff for DI last year ?
Bala: My only suggestion to you is to quit worrying about this because all you will achieve by doing so is messing up the other exams you plan to write.

Anand: In set 111 Q.No. 5 was a bit confusing. What is the answer for this one?
Sourajit: option 4

yogendra: is 70 the answer to ques 12 of set 444?
Sourajit: 100 is the answer

lav: hello sir wat is the answer to question no. 16 of set 222
Raghunath: between 0 to 60 degress

timestudent: whatz the ans For ques --2 circles P & Q 4 --smallest range of AQP
Sourajit: between 0 and 60

vikrant: there is no constraint for m !!
Raghunath: the constraint for n restricts the answer

pradjumna: hi bala....for most of the premier institues.. nov 30th is the last dat for applying. so, if i get 80 to 85%( after checking ur key) in the CAT exam ,to which universities can i apply for....
Bala: If you do end up getting something around 80-85 percentile, you will need choose a few more institutes outside of the top 20, though you could try your luck with a few within that too (just in case). Ultimately the choice depends on your background (education, work-ex, career goals, etc.)

rajat: booklet 444 ques 15 ans plzzz
Sourajit: 9

abhi: Airplane Tizone question . Time diff 1hr ?? Speed 550 ??
Bala: Yes

adi: hello anybody there ??
Bala: Yes

Supriya: i am getting approx 50 in quants 45 in di...verbal barely touchng 20 :( hw much wil my verbal score matter? as in...if not A or B...wil i atleast get other calls?
Raghunath: good performance in Quants & DI.verbal score will matter for IIMs. Lt us wait till we finalise our key for verbal

ashish: hello
Raghunath: yes

richa: i am scoring 30 in QA, 43 in DI and 12 in VA. should i apply to NITIE n SP JAIN?? which B schools should i apply to??
Sourajit: definitely apply to NITIE... SPJAIN also considers the candidate'sprofile along-with CAT score.. but then do take the plunge and apply to SPJAIN also

sanjib: any body there??
Raghunath: yes

maddy: wat are the cut offs for each section and da overall cutoff
Sourajit: CUT_OFFS according to T.I.M.E: VA: 18-20; DI: 30-32; QA: 19-21; OVERALL: 88-90

rohit: what is solution of f(1)+ f(2).......f(n)=n2*f(n)........
Raghunath: 80

Supriya: ??
Raghunath: What is your question

manish: sir wat kind of regular reading you wud suggest for rc/english section for future cat aspirant.
Sourajit: focus on abstract, philosophy, sociology.. read and discuss the editorial columns of good English newspapers to start with

suresh: can any faculty tell me now how the student prepare for cat-08??
Bala: In case you ahve given CAT 07, this question is either premature or reflects your rather depressed state of mind. If so, I suggest that you put this behind you and focus on the remaining exams. In case you are looking at CAT 08 only, then this paper only reinforces the importance of getting your fundamentals right and having loads of exposure to problem solving on various patterns and to the test environment (like through the AIMCATs)

muhahaha: what is the answers for question 17,23,24 and 25 of set 444 ???
Sourajit: 17 : 1, 23: 3, 24: 1, 25: 2

ranjan: form no 444, Q23 ans please
Sourajit: option 3 (answer is value 1)

abhi: miso answer should be 17
Raghunath: x_10y+50z=107. If z=o, Y can take values from 0 to 10, If z=1, y can take values from 0 to 5, If 2 = 2, Y can tak only one value

reddy: still how much time it takes for posting key ????
Sourajit: we don't hurry with the key.... if you realize there are a lot of traps set in the paper.. so have a format of speaking to experts spread across the country on different areas, collate and finalize the key... so it does take time but we get it right

shiva: jeez ppl wait!!!! there's no faculty here
Bala: What do you think the 3 of us are???? :)

vaishnav: how many possible four digit square roots with first 2 digits and last 2 digits equal question answer is 0 ?
Raghunath: one the perfect square is 7744

abhi: f(9)= 80
Raghunath: yes

smrithi: sir according to the key my scores are QA 30, DI 48, VA 25 OA 103. What are my chances ? where else should i apply ?
Sourajit: hey u have a good chance.. take the confidence forward and put up a good show in the remainning exams..

ravigupta: sir getting 44 in qa,54 in di and 31 in va and 129 oveerall.how does that look ?
Raghunath: A good performance meriting calls from IIMs

krishna: is there any advantage for having work exp...when it comes to iim calls???
Sourajit: yes.. there is some weightage given to work ex as declared by the IIM-B document

parul: Hi Bala, plz tell me tht I have attempted arnd 8 questions in QA,wht r my chances?
Bala: 8 does not look too bad. That (obviously) means a maximum of 32. It all depends on how many errors you have committed. Just 2 can bring your score down to 22 - rather close to our estimated cut-offs. Wait for the key to be put up.

COOL: sir what is the answer for p=1/3 q= 1/3 and smallest odd n ?
Raghunath: nine

shiva: sir..i see 34 on quant, 52 on di, 51 on verb according to the ims' key. what can you say abt this?(where does that put me?) also may i know when TIME's gonna come up with their key? thanks! shiva
Sourajit: wonderful chance to get IIM Calls... do check with T.I.M.E. answer key. Do crack the other exams with similar confidence. And also gradually gear up for the GD-PI

suresh: bala sir.... i am cat-08 student and now i want to know, that as i'm afraid from VA section so can u tell me how can i prepare for that. specially for grammar and RCs??
Bala: As we have always said, focus on the fundamentals for now. Get your basics right in Grammar, vocabulary and usage. Practice on loads of questions on various models that appeared in previous CAT papers - This paper should warn one and all not to go only by the last couple of years' patterns. For RC, just keep at your regular reading practice. You have a year to go - loads of time to bring yourself up to the mark.

dakshinamurthy1: wats the answer for 1 question in set 111
Sourajit: option 2

lav: wat is the ans of question 2 circles wit centre p q and intersection p and q... aqp in degrees?
Raghunath: 0between 0 and 60 deg

MHK: Sir,I attempted about 11 in QA am sure of 8 rite....worst case scenario would be getting 25-27 i guess......is it any good....
Sourajit: u should be able to clear the QUANT cut-offs .. now depends on the other sections and overall score

cs: Sir my scores are: QA:27 DI:30 VA:11..What percentile can I expect? And can I expect calls from NITIE, SP JAIN?
Sourajit: looks difficult.. match your answers with our answer key. Also SPJAIN does consider profile

thahir: I don't know how much sense this question makes. But the other institutes are giving comparitively higher cut offs. Like say 123+ for one IIM call. Last yearHow realistic was the cut-offs predicted by time?
Bala: Last year alone is not a suitable yardstick. For the last 10 plus years, we have been pretty accurate. Like when we said 48-50 as an aggregate cut-off, I had a student from Chennai with a score of 49 getting calls from all 6 IIMs. This was when others' cut-offs were around 52 to 58

sri: sir what r the answers for 15,16 in set no 111
Sourajit: 15: 4, 16: 4

Nooruddin: Hello, Raghunath Sir... Can you please give the solutions for the 'Mr. David' Cashelet(Q.Nos.19 and 20)in QA, form number 111?

Sourajit: IMI, FORE, LBS, TAPMI,KJS, IISWBM, IFMR, UBS

pintu: test form no-111,question no-2,9,10,12,18,27,28,
Sourajit: IMI, FORE, LBS, TAPMI,KJS, IISWBM, IFMR, UBS
