Shahana: Sunil, I would rate this VA section as reasonably tough, with cutoffs in the range of 20 - 22. RC was considerably tougher than the other questions.

hitesh: hi... if i do not score anything in VA but get about 100 overall, do i have any chance for IIM's.. If not IIM's then any other institutions...
Shahana: Hitesh, IIM admission guidelines are quite clear that you have to clear the cutoffs in each section apart from overall cutoffs so you don't have a chance at IIMs. But you may have a shot at other institutes like TAPMI and KJS

Shahana: I would like you to check your score with TIME's key and / or IIM's official key which should be out soon to decide...your current score may be enough only if you have a good profile in terms of academic performance and work exp otherwise may be a little low

Shahana: You might get 1 or 2 IIM calls...but on the dicey side because qa is borderline. Very good chance for the other top institutes. Good show.

PCR: You have reasonably bright chances of entering top 20 business schools except IIMs and MDI which are looking at sectional cutoffs.

anand_953: hi Sirs, i compared my answers with the answer keys given by IMS and PT. I am getting around 37 and 34 in DI and QA respectively. But the VA score is varying like anything using their keys. Also i am not convinced whether their answers are correct or not. I am banking on TIME's answer set to know my real scores. Please altest let me know now as to what is the likely cut-off in VA. i attempted 14 questions in this section.
Shahana: Likey cutoff is 20 - 22. You are welcome to debate and discuss your answers on this forum which might give you a clearer idea on where you stand in VA.

Shahana: Both Quant and DI are most probably lower than cutoff so IIMs seem unlikely. You can try for MICA, TAPMI, KJ Somaiya and other B+ level CAT institutes.

PCR: cutoff is decided by the paper's diffculty level, it is not decided by any one person. the cutoffs given at our website are our best guesses, which are open to discussion and revision too. but for now, these are the best guesses.

Shahana: Not sanguine about IIMs or MDI - SPJain will depend a lot on your academic and workexp profile. You might have a chance there.

Saeed: shouldn't the answer for Q.52 of set 444 be option 2?? coz the sentence should've been "the old man had a healthy mistrust.." and not "the old man had a healthy distrust.." right?? but i jus checked the dictionary now... both "mistrust" and "distrust" mean the same!!:(
PCR: distrust is about not having a trust that someone is capable of something. this, therefore, can be healthy also. mistrust is an inherently negative feeling which cannot ever be healthy.

anand_953: and what's wrong with the TIME site?? why is'nt any of the links working?? i can't even open the cut-off link.. TIME surely is very bad at managing its own site. Don't know to whom they have given the responsibility of maintaning this site.... IMS and others are far better at maintaining themselves online...!!!

PCR: it certainly is not too much of a task to do that. however, just as there is disagreement in the student community over answers iof the VA/RC section, the faculty community too is in disagreement over some answers. this happens since English is a subjective area. pleas have patience :)

kjain: shahana mam, CL is maintaining that the overall cutoff would be 105+ for atleast one call. Your take on that?

PCR: ardent can make sense. however active can make sense too. in the original article by "thomas friedman" he does use "active" :)

Shahana: You have a good fighting chance of getting 1or 2 calls - depending on other factors like acads. All the best!

PCR: "censor" as a verb is performed by the censor board. "censure" is severe criticism that can be done by critics. Censure is correct over censor.

Shahana: Censor means cutting out objectionable parts. Critics cannot censor (censor board can do that) - critics can onl censure, which means to criticize

dob2086: what happens in case of errata in a question
PCR: last year the IIMs decided not to use the questions that had errors. if the errors were in different sets, then the IIMs took them into account in different sets.

PCR: ur percentile will be quite high - around 98.7 but u may not make sectional cutoff of VA for IIMs and MDI. u can apply to rest of the institutes as per your wish!

PCR: percentile will be below 98.5 - can't be very precise below that.

PCR: hard to say at this time. check the time website tomorrow to check the co-relation between score/percentile as well as what institutes to apply to at what score.

PCR: do not worry. there are so many other exams whose last days are still remaining. check the time center near you - they can help you decide which other forms to fill. you must have surely filled other exams like IIFT, MAT, XAT etc. please forget about CAT and concentrate on other exams. CAT was NOT the end of the world. best of luck for preparation!!!
