Computer Science & Engineering

"The nation can use its core competence in IT, natural resources and human resources to become a knowledge superpower by 2020" ---------By A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM.

You dial a number “yyyyyyyy” using your telephone. What you hear is the following: -

"Good Evening. Welcome to ABCD Multiplex Theatre."
"For movie information—Say Movies or dial 1 "
"For booking Tickets --- Say Book Tickets or dial 2"

If you say Movies or press 1, you get the names of the movies running in the 5 theatres as follows:-

"The movies being played in our theatres are – Screen 1 – GURU, Screen 2 – LORD OF THE RINGS, Screen 3 – TITANIC, Screen 4 – BRAVEHEART, Screen 5 – TOMMORROW NEVER DIES. To repeat , Say repeat or dial 1, To book tickets ---- Say Book Tickets or dial 2’

The above is one of the practical applications of Computer Science Engineering. You have just spoken to a machine. The system is called IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System). "Speech Recognition" is used to recognize your speech input. Due to Technological advancements like the above, one could get any information from anywhere within seconds. Here, computer does the work of a human. The Internet and Mobile phones offer similar services rendering web page content. Ever since the advent of the Internet and E-mail, globalization is at its rapid pace.

Today, with a Personal Computer (PC) and an Internet Connection, one could feel that any information is a click away. Many search engines have emerged, which give tons of information about anything under the roof of the Sun. All you have to do is to visit a Search Engine and type the text and click the search button. Within seconds, you get the information needed. Computers provide entertainment too. Games like “Age Of Empires”, “NFS” are to name a few. Today, in the US, one could see the photograph of their residence taken from a Satellite. Google, one of the popular search engine provides this facility at http://maps.google.com. This is an example of Science and Technology working together.

A lot of processing goes behind the scenes to fetch the data. Processing is a result of Software programs written by Computer Science Engineers. Computer Science Engineering enables one to learn the intricacies involved above.

Due to the interest in programming, Bill Gates has climbed great heights to become the Chairman of Microsoft Corporation, the worldwide leader in Software, services and solutions. Most of the PC’s run on Microsoft Windows Operating System.

Computer Science & Engineering deals with integration of Software and Hardware. Majority of the portion is on how the Software manages the Hardware. Students learn all about various aspects of Software like Programming(C, C++, JAVA), Compiler Design, Algorithms, Computer Architecture, Data Structures and Database Systems. JAVA programming language is gaining a lot of momentum due to its platform independency. A program written in JAVA could run in any Operating System unlike a C or C++ program. Sun Microsystems had developed the JAVA Language. Object Oriented Programming with JAVA has been extensively used in Enterprise Application development. Today, more and more complicated systems are turning towards JAVA as a solution due to its open standard specification. On the hardware side, INTEL, the processor manufacturer has gone on record in increasing the processing power. A lot of career opportunities today await Computer Engineering Graduates. You could become a Programmer, Analyst, Database Administrator, Web Designer, Testing Engineer, Network Engineer and so on. If you are good at Maths and lots of interest in Computers then this is the field you should choose. You could be a BIG GIANT one day.
