ADMISSION TO ENGINEERING DEGREE COURSES IN KERALA

For professional degree courses in Kerala, an aspirant has to appear for the state level entrance examination (KEAM – Kerala Engineering And Medical) conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations to get admission to the Government / aided as well as private self financing colleges* within the state. KEAM entrance examination is conducted for admission to BTech Degree courses, Architecture, Medical courses, Agriculture & allied courses, Veterinary courses etc. In addition to this there are some private consortia conducting the entrance examination separately for admission to certain courses also.

*Allotment of seats from the State Rank Lists for all courses in Self-financing colleges will be made in accordance with the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India / Hon’ble High Court of Kerala or orders of the Govt. of Kerala/Govt. of India /as per the law in existence at the time of Centralised Allotment process (CAP) and will be notified separately.

In 2008, the total number of applications for the engineering and medical entrance examinations was a little over 1,19,000.
The total number of seats available in the engineering colleges in Kerala is approximately 25,000. The number of seats available for MBBS courses is around 1700 and for the BDS Course, the total intake is around 750.

Academic Eligibility for Open Category

  1. Engineering Courses
    1. Qualifying Exam - Higher Secondary Examination, Kerala / equivalent.
    2. Minimum marks - 50% for Mathematics separately and 50% for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry / Biotechnology/Computer science/Biology put together. Or 50% marks in the final year Diploma engineering examination awarded by the Board of Technical Education for lateral entry.
    3. 50% for Mathematics /Biology separately and 50% aggregate for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/ Biology put together are eligible for admission to the seats for B Tech (D Sc & Tech) - Diploma in Engineering is not considered for admission.
  2. Architecture Course
    1. Qualifying Exam - Higher Secondary Examination, Kerala / equivalent.
    2. Minimum marks - 50% aggregate
    3. Entrance Examination - 40% marks i.e. 80 out of 200 for the NATA conducted by National Institute of Advanced Studies in Architecture (NIASA), Pune,
      1. Lateral entry is not allowed.
      2. Candidate with three year diploma in Engineering awarded by Board of Technical Examinations, having 50% marks aggregate
Admission to the above courses except Architecture is regulated on the basis of merit in the entrance examination conducted by the Controller of Entrance Examinations (CEE).

Institutions and allocation of seats


Controller of entrance examinations makes allotment for Government seats available in
  • Government & aided colleges
  • Self Financing institutions under Government control
  • Self Financing institutions under private management
There are management seats in aided colleges which are filled by the management concerned.

Nationality

Only Indian nationals are eligible for admission to professional courses unless otherwise notified. Persons of Indian origin who have studied in Kerala from class VIII to class XII will be treated equivalent to Indian citizen for admission. There are various other categories also which will be notified in prospectus.

Age

The applicant should complete 17 years of age as on the 31st December of the year. There is no upper age limit.

Conduct of Examination

Separate examinations are conducted for Engineering and Medical/Agriculture courses.

Engineering Entrance examination   Paper I for Physics and Chemistry
                                               Paper II for Mathematics

Each examination is of 2 ½ hour duration.

Pattern of Examinations-2008

Engineering Entrance Examination:


Type of exam - Objective type, with multiple choice questions of 5 options and single response to be marked on OMR sheet. Duration - Each paper contained 120 questions of 150 minutes duration

Scoring - 4 marks for one correct answer, 1 negative mark for wrong answer.

Syllabus - For detailed syllabus refer to the prospectus, but the questions are more or less in the standard of higher secondary or equivalent examinations.

Medical Entrance Examination:-

This consists of two papers of two and a half hours duration each. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are conducted on adjacent days - Paper 2 after Paper 1.

Paper 1 consists of 120 questions - 72 Questions in Chemistry and 48 Questions in Physics.

Paper 2 Consists of 120 Questions in Biology.

Probable Time of KEAM entrance examination

The entrance examination is usually conducted in the month of April.
