IIT Roorkee is an institute of historic importance with its origins dating back to nineteenth century when it started as Roorkee College; in 1847 it was instituted as Thomson College of Civil Engineering and later in 1949 renamed as Roorkee University. It was converted to an IIT in the year 2001. IITR is one of the oldest institutes of technical education in Asia; the institute’s 150th anniversary was celebrated in 1996.

IIT Roorkee is the largest technical institute in India in terms of the number of academic units with18 departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities & social sciences, management programmes, academic centres, supporting service centres and a large number of research centres. It runs eleven Under Graduate, five Integrated Dual Degree, three Integrated M.Tech, three Integrated M.Sc., sixty one Post Graduate and several Doctoral Programmes. The Engineering departments in IITR are Architecture and Planning , Civil Engineering , Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical and Material Engineering, Paper Technology, Electronics and Computer Engineering, Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering. Total strength in IITR for Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs is 1517.
