  33. Can you give me some suggestions on how to prepare for XAT Entrance Test ?

  34. With respect to preparation of Logical Reasoning it would be advisable for students to revise concepts pertaining to Puzzles and Decision making Questions. They should especially focus on practicing the Distribution puzzles. The CAT students have received the reasoning study material - SM 1001605 and SM 1001314 for logical reasoning (these two are with solutions). There was a thorough discussion on each of these kind of questions in Logic Basics - 1, 2 and 3 (LRHO 1001601, 02 and 03), and in LAPEs & LATs. LAPE 1001302, 03, 04 and 05 contain many questions which are of XAT difficulty level.

It would be advisable to prepare Critical Reasoning questions.

For English Language part, it would be advisable for students to revise concepts pertaining to RC, Sentence Correction, Vocab based questions (words confused), Para formation, Logical reasoning questions (especially on identifying argument structure and argument elements, and inference based questions). Students should also focus on Figures of Speech as there have been questions on identifying metaphors, oxymorons, personification, etc. in previous years' XAT papers.

The RC passages in XAT are often based on 'off-beat' topics (Passages included subjects such as Psychology, Sciece and Sociology)

One should also practice questions based on Decision Making.

In addition to these areas, XAT Entrance test also tests Essay Writing skills

    A recent topic was:

Listening is a dying art. We hardly listen to understand. We only listen to refute or reply.

XAT seems to have moved from the complicated topics that it used to give, to topics that are more amenable to creative writing .This is both an advantage and a disadvantage, depending on how good one is with language. The word limit was 200 words. You may support or oppose the statement, but your stand has to be justified with relevant examples.

Topics that seem easy will fill the student with a plethora of ideas. The challenge lies in the discretion in choice of thoughts and their logical flow in presentation.

Students will appreciate that such topics require clear thinking, effective argument construction / analysis, and effective writing.

It is advised that students keep essay writing in mind when they do their reading comprehension exercises, focusing on expression of central idea, the idea flow, and the tools employed for effectively putting across ideas. A thorough awareness of social and political changes of the times will be an add on to present your case, in case XAT goes back to subject oriented essay topics.

For the section on Quantitative Ability, a good Preparation for CAT should be more than sufficient. Though it must be added that some of the questions in XAT tend to be pretty tricky and it would be advisable for students to be very judicious while attempting questions. It would also be advisable for students to brush up on their Speed Maths concepts as some of the questions in DI tend to be calculation intensive

For preparation on General Awareness, in addition to reading newspapers regularly, it would be advisable for a student to prepare from the following sources:

    • Also, in the various issues of MBA Education & Careers magazine, focus on features like Business GK, Current Issues & Events, and Current Event Chronicle (this feature captures important tid-bits).
    • In addition to the above, please run through the GK Model Papers feature titled, Improve your GK.
    • Go through the GA Note (Study Material) booklet for stock GK (like history and geography). Also use the GAT papers, each with 50 questions.
    • Manorama & CSR Year Book - it helps in preparation for stock type questions

In Manorama Year Book and CSR, please focus on the following chapters.

    • Who is who
    • What is what
    • Science scan
    • Human body
    • Computers
    • Landmarks of history
    • The Universe

While preparing for this section, it would be advisable for students to focus more on issues related to business, economics and politics related to business environment.

Finally, OMETs for XAT are perhaps the best source for preparation. It comes very close to the actualXAT entrance exam paper and one should give maximum importance to these question papers. Also, going through last year's XAT papers would help
