PHARMACY

A Pharmacist study the chemistry of drugs, their origin, supervises the manufacture, blending of drugs and related products as prescribed by qualified medical professionals.The role of pharmacist plays the integral part of healthcare. Subjects like Pharmaceutics, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacutical chemistry and Pharmacy practice is dealt with during a basic degree course in Pharmacy. The Pharmacist’s job can be categorized into R&D, Process and Product development, manufacturing, Quality assurance and marketing. A qualified pharmacist could be working as hospital pharmacist, retail pharmacist, industrial pharmacist or research pharmacist. For better career prospects the specialization done at the post - graduation level is a decisive factor. Pharmacy education is regulated in India by two bodies ie Pharmacy council of India (PCI) and AICTE.

In India the study of Pharmacy is at the following levels:

The basic qualification for becoming a qualified Pharmacist in India

  1. Diploma in Pharmacy (D Pharm) of 2 years duration after Class XII, followed by 3 months of practical training.
  2. Bachelor of Pharmacy (B Pharm) degree of 4 years duration after 10+2
Admission procedure

Admission to B Pharm degree colleges is made either on the basis of merit or entrance exam conducted by the concerned bodies. After completing D pharm one can take admission to B pharm through lateral entry also

Eligibility

Students completing class XII with physics, chemistry, and biology/mathematics are eligible for the study of Pharmacy.

Higher education

  • Master of Pharmacy (M Pharm 2-years).
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D).

Admission to B Pham degree college under various Universities in India

The duration of the course leading to degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy is four years. It is full time course and the admission to first year B.Pharm. is made on the basis of marks obtained in the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the respective Universities. The entrance test is usually combined with the medical entrance examination, mostly held in April-May. M Pharm course is for a period of two years. M Pharm admission is made either through GATE, Written test/Interview or AICTE QIP scheme
