AYURVEDA EDUCATION IN INDIA
Ayurveda, as a science of medicine, has been in practice in the country for over 3,000 years .It is one of our traditional medical practices using plants and herbs as ingredients of medicines. Even though Allopathy still remains the supreme, many people prefer Ayurvedic treatment for various diseases because it has no side effects. It has gained popularity in overseas also and there is high demand for Ayurvedic treatments offered in Kerala.The Ayurvedic practice in India is regulated by Central Council of Indian Medicine, Janakpuri New Delhi (www.ccimindia.org)

Courses and Duration

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

This is a 5 1/2 years course including 18 months of training in any Ayurvedic hospital. The degree offered in India, Ayurvedacharya, is equivalent to an MBBS degree.

This can be followed by an MD in Ayurveda (Ayurvedavaridhi). The duration of the course is 2 1/2 years. The M.D. students can opt for specialization in fields like Dravyagunam (knowledge of medicinal plants), kaya Chikitsa (general medicine), Rasa Shastra (study of mineral and metallic preparations for treatment of chronic diseases), Shalya (surgery), etc. In addition, M.D. students have to undertake a research project and submit a thesis.

A higher study can be pursued at Ph.D level which is for three years.

Eligibility

Eligibility required to join  B.A.M.S (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery) is  Higher Secondary/P.U.C. preferably with Sanskrit or an examination equivalent there to, or Intermediate (Ayurvedic group- Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Sanskrit) of any recognized University/Board which confirms to the specifications approved by the Council.

Some institutions also offer certificate courses or  pre Ayurvedic courses of one to two years. Eligibility needed for such course is S.S.L.C./ Matriculation preferably with Sanskrit or an examination equivalent.

Candidates who have passed MBBS course recognized by Medical Council of India and have completed one year internship training can also take Post Graduate course in Ayurveda.

Age

Minimum age of joining for BAMS course is 17 years on first of October.

Admission to the undergraduate level courses is made through national/state level entrance examinations or on the basis of the marks of qualifying examinations alone.
