CAT (Common Admission Test) is the entrance exam conducted by the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management). The IIMs (which are currently 13 in number and located at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Indore, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Shillong, Ranchi, Rohtak, Raipur, Trichy, Udaipur, Kashipur) are among the top best management institutes in India. The IIMs use CAT as a part of their selection process for their popular two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management.
While CAT was initially started as the entrance exam for the IIMs, over the last few decades quite a few management institutes tied up with the IIMs to use the applicants' CAT scores for admission into their respective institutes. There are more than 160 management institutes (other than the 13 IIMs) that will use CAT as a part of their selection process for the academic session starting in July 2012. For all the institutes that use CAT (including the IIMs), CAT is only one component of the selection process. Each institute conducts its own Group Discussion and/or Interview before deciding whether a student should be granted admission or not. 12 out of 13 IIMs (excluding IIM Ahmedabad) will have an essay as part of their selection process.
