ICET 2014 – Analysis
ICET2014 was held on the scheduled date of 23rd May2014. Kakatiya University conducted ICET 2014. ICET 2012 and ICET 2013 were also conducted by the same university.
There was no change in the question paper pattern and the marking scheme. The question paper consisted of 200 questions to be answered in 150 minutes. There were three sections - Analytical Ability consisting of 75 questions, Mathematics section which had 75 questions and a section on Communication Ability with 50 questions. There was no negative marking. To help you understand this year’s test paper better, we provide you with a comprehensive analysis, below.

Section A – Analytical Ability
Data Sufficiency:
The questions in Data Sufficiency were from a wide range of Arithmetic topics. We can see this clearly from the table that is given below. There was an increase in the number of questions from Numbers when compared to previous ICET papers. This year there were 7 questions from Numbers. There was no reasoning based question in this section.
On the whole, the data sufficiency part can be rated as difficult, with difficulty level of 2/3rd of the questions being moderate to difficult.

Data Analysis:
This part had two DI sets – one with five questions and another with three questions. In addition to this, there were two questions based on Set Theory. The break up of questions from DI was similar to that of Icet 2013.
As far as DI is concerned, the set having five questions was based on Pie Chart and the questions were easy. The set of three questions which were based on the data given in tabular form, were also easy. Overall Data Analysis can be considered to be easy.
Reasoning: (Problem Solving, Coding-Decoding and Date, Time and Arrangement)
There were 42 Reasoning questions from the test area of Problem Solving.
- Continuing the pattern that was followed in 2012, this year also there were 20 questions based on series and analogies. Unlike last year, where there were equal number of series and analogies questions, this year there were thirteen on series and seven on analogies. There were eight questions on number series , two on letter series and two on number and letter combination. Among the number series questions, two are based on pure maths concepts. As regards the questions on analogies, these are based on numbers and letters and there was one verbal analogy question. The difficulty level of these questions was similar to that of last year. There were five odd man out questions. One major change, as compared to last year, is that the number of questions based on mathematical concepts decreased.
- The questions on 'Coding – Decoding' have been split into two parts - One set of five questions based on concept similar to that of the 'r' model and another set of five individual questions. The set of five questions was easy. While one among the five individual questions was of moderate difficulty level.
- The questions on Date, Time and Arrangement were easier as compared to last year.
Overall, this section was easy. A score in the band of 30-32 out of 42 is a real good score in reasoning !!

Section B –Mathematical Ability
This section was time consuming. About 60% of the questions in this section were either time consuming or difficult.
While there were few questions which could be solved by direct substitution using the formulae, there were lot of questions which were purely based on the application of the concepts rather that direct substitution in the formulae types. There were two new questions types, one each on Remainder Theorem and Square root of a 4th degree polynomial which were not asked in ICET in the past.
Over all, the section on Mathematical Ability in ICET2014 was difficult.

Section – C -Communication Ability
To begin with, the section was along expected lines – there were no surprise elements and the pattern was a reflection of the previous years.
A brief analysis of each area of the English component is mentioned below.
Vocabulary:
There were six stand alone questions in this part; the head words were all very simple, commonly used words which the students would have found easy to relate to, as they are present in many of our handouts.
The fill in the blank sentences were four in number and uncomplicated; choices too were easy picks. An average student too can achieve a good score in Vocabulary.
Functional Grammar:
There were seven questions on Statements/Conversation. They can be classified under easy to moderate. Incorrect choices were glaringly obvious as such, and hence answering these questions would have been easy. . A total of eight questions were on fill in the blanks with suitable verb/phrase/preposition. Common knowledge of the usage of prepositions and phrasal verbs would make this part a cakewalk. The difficulty level can be pegged between easy and moderate. Awareness of standard grammatical collocations would do the trick.
Reading comprehension:
There were three passages with a total of fifteen questions, with five questions per passage.
Break-up of passages and respective question sets is as given below.
The passage which dealt with the factors responsible for the decreasing admissions to business schools in America was of 205 words. The content was run-through and easy to read and interpret. The questions had choices that were almost straight picks from the text, and could be easily answered. No mind boggling or brain racking questions here.
There was another passage which was based on corporate social responsibility. The passage consisted of 200 words. The questions asked were easy to moderate and a single proper reading would ensure correct answers.
The passage, which was based on people's and the author's perception of old age, was a little longer with a word count of 344 words, and was abstract in nature. A careful reading required to properly understand the text. The questions were more challenging than those of the previous two passages, but could be answered with a little effort.
Overall, it can be called an easy section when compared to ICET 2013 paper, where an average kind of preparation too could fetch an excellent score!
Computer and Business Terminology: Now coming to the questions on computer and business terminology - these are also a part of the Communication Ability section. Most of the questions on Computers were not on expected lines and the choices were tricky. Three of these questions were easy and two were difficult.
As regards the questions from Business Terminology, three of them were easy and two were of moderate difficult level. Most of the questions that were asked in CT & BT were not asked in the past.
Overall, ICET2014 paper will be a low scoring paper because of the higher difficulty level of Mathematical Ability section and questions on Data Sufficiency. The English section and the Reasoning section were relatively much easier when compared to the section on Mathematical Ability.
