Archery

India’s Olympic prospect Deepika Kumari won her first World Cup individual recurve gold medal at Antalya, Turkey.

Deepika, who has already qualified for London Olympics, is the current junior world champion and a gold medallist at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. She had also won the Cadet World Title in 2009.


Chess

Vishy Anand wins World Chess Championship

Viswanathan Anand retained his World Chess Championship title after defeating his challenger Boris Gelfand of Israel 2.5-1.5 in a crunch four-game tiebreaker in Moscow.

With this, Anand won his fifth World Chess Championship title after winning the ultimate glory in 2000, 2007, 2008, and 2010.

There have been only three World Chess Championship matches that have been decided on tiebreaks: Vishy Anand’s loss to Anatoly Karpov of Russia in the 1998 final at Lucerne, Rustam Kasimdzhanov’s title win in 2004, and Vladimir Kramnik’s success against Veselin Topalov in 2006.

Snooker

Aditya Mehta stunned fancied compatriot Pankaj Advani to become only the third Indian ever to clinch the Asian Snooker Championships, held in Doha. He is the third Indian to lift the Asian Snooker Title and gets the championship trophy home after an eight year long wait.


Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi won the Asian Continental Chess Championship despite losing to A. R. Saleh Salem of UAE in the final round, held in Ho Chi Minh City.

Negi finished the tournament on 7 points and was tied for first place along with Yu Yangyi of China. But in their direct encounter earlier in the championship, Negi had beaten Yangyi, which helped him win the gold medal. For the record, Yangyi finished second, repeating his performance from last year and the third spot was bagged by Saleh on 6.5 points. In the women’s section, Tan Zhongyi finished third.
