Australia wins Women’s World Cup

Australia clinched their sixth Women’s World Cup title after they comfortably defeated the West Indies by a huge margin of 114 runs in the final at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

Needing 260 to win, the Caribbeans were bundled out for 145 runs in 43.1 overs, miserably failing to recover from a top-order collapse. Batting first, Australia posted a challenging 259 for seven.

Australia took home a prize money of U.S.$75,000 along with the distinction of being the top ranked team in the world, while runners up West Indies received U.S.$30,000.

HOCKEY

First season of Hockey India League was played from 14 January to 10 February 2013 with five city-based franchises on home and away basis. Hockey India League (HIL) signed a multi-year title sponsorship deal with the two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp for the title sponser of the tournament, making it the Hero Hockey India League. The five teams that participated were Delhi Wave Riders, Mumbai Magicians, Punjab Warriors, Ranchi Rhinos, Uttar Pradesh Wizards.

The first season of the HIL was won by Ranchi Rhinos.


Lionel Messi of Argentina has won the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or as the best player for a third consecutive time while Abby Wambach of the United States won the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award, the first time in ten years that an American has won the award.
