2012 Nobel Prizes

The 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded jointly to Serge Haroche and David J. Wineland “for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems”.

The 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly to Sir John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka “for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent”.

The 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded jointly to Robert J. Lefkowitz and Brian K. Kobilka “for studies of G-protein-coupled receptors’’.

The 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Mo Yan “who with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary”.

The 2012 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to European Union (EU) “for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe”.

The 2012 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel was divided equally between Alvin E. Roth and Lloyd S. Shapely “for the theory of stable allocations and practice of market design”.

TENNIS

India successfully completed a 5-0 rout of New Zealand in the 1st Round Playoff of the Asia/Oceania group of the 2012 Davis Cup Tournament. Three wins on the first two days had already ensured that India will stay in Group I for 2013 competition. The Kiwi team will fight it out with Chinese Taipei to retain its place in Group I. It’s the first time since the 2005 tie against Uzbekistan that India have whitewashed an opponent in Davis Cup. Top-class performances from Yuki Bhambri, Vishnu Vardhan, Sanam Singh, and Divij Sharan ensured New Zealand’s 5-0 whitewash
