Kumari wins World Cup silver medal A gold medal in
the prestigious Archery World Cup final eluded Deepika Kumari once again as she
settled for her third successive silver after being pipped by Korean Olympic
champion Ok-Hee Yun, in Paris. This was the 2008 Olympic champion’s second gold in the
World Cup Final after 2010, while for Deepika, it was her second loss to Yun as
the Indian once again could not overcome the Korean jinx. This was Deepika’s fourth
successive World Cup Final appearance. After ranking fifth in 2010, Deepika
clinched silver medals in both 2011 and 2012. The All India
Tennis Association (AITA) has appointed former Davis Cupper Anand Amritraj
as the new non-playing captain of the Davis Cup team, which will take on
Chinese Taipei in the Asia/Oceania Group I tie next year. The 61-year-old Mr
Amritraj replaced S. P. Misra, who lost his job after eight top players
revolted, calling for changes in Davis Cup playing conditions, early this
year. Thomas Bach has been elected
the new president of the International Olympic Committee. The 59-year-old German – the first
Olympic gold medalist to become president – won in the second round of voting
by his fellow IOC members to beat his five male rivals bidding to succeed
Jacques Rogge, who stepped down after 12 years in charge. Mr Bach is a gold medalist with the
West German team in the fencing team foil event in the 1976 Olympics. He and
his team-mates came from 7-1 down to win the world foil title in 1975. |
