To help you understand this year’s test paper better, we bring you a comprehensive analysis of NIMCET 2010.

MATHEMATICS

The questions in this section were relatively easy when compared to NIMCET 2009. This section had
40 questions. Major chunk of the questions were from Vectors, Definite Integrals, Conic Sections, Matrices, Sets and Probability. Questions from these six topics constituted more than half of the questions in the mathematics part. No topic was missed out. There was at least one question from each of the topics mentioned in the syllabus. More than 50% of the questions were either easy or of moderate difficulty level. As the paper had negative marking, there was no need to attempt the difficult questions. The distribution of questions from each topic, along with the difficulty level is given in the table below.

ANALYTICAL ABILITY AND LOGICAL REASONING

Of the 55 questions in this section, 12 were from Arithmetic topics. Hence there were 43 questions on reasoning in this section. Every year there are a few questions from Arithmetic in this section.

The questions in this section were relatively easy when compared to what appeared in NIMCET 2009.
The number of questions attempted by a student would be more than that in the Maths section. There were lesser number of puzzles, when compared to NIMCET 2009 paper. Another oddity is that there were more number of questions based on traditionally easy topics like series/sequence, odd man out, direction sense and coding-decoding. There were the prize attempts and one can also find many easy questions in arithmetic and hence the student would have tried to maximise his/her attempts. To summarise, unlike last year, this section was easy and less time consuming.

COMPUTER AWARENESS

This section had 10 questions on computers. The questions on computer awareness in NIMCET2010 were the easiest when compared to all previous years NIMCET papers.

There were 4 questions on computer fundamentals – stored program machine, execution program of an OS, data processing functions of a computer and the one based on arranging field, record, character, database in ascending order. All these four questions were easy. The two questions on advanced computer architecture – are on I/O mapped I/O and the other on word length were difficult and were from non-traditional topics. One question on number systems was very easy. The other two questions were on Boolean expressions (NOR) OR (XOR) and the other on K-maps were of standard types and easy as well. A student with a little knowledge about computer fundamentals and thorough with basics of number systems and Boolean expressions, would have performed well in this section.

ENGLISH

The English section of the NIMCET 2010 paper had 15 questions.

Reading Comprehension: There was one short passage of 150 words with 2 questions. One was detail based (identify the untrue statement), the other was a global question (what the passage is about). Both questions were of average difficulty.

Vocabulary: The vocabulary part had questions on synonyms, antonyms, analogy, fill in the blanks.
The 2 analogy questions were easy; the others of average difficulty. One synonym question and one fill in the blank were difficult.

Grammar: Grammar, Para forming questions and inappropriate usage questions were of average difficulty. The one question on incorrect statement was difficult.

Overall 2 easy, 3 difficult, 10 medium – the english part can be said to be of moderate difficulty.
