How to pursue M.Tech in IIIT’s

(Entrance Exam, Eligibility Criteria, Placements etc.)

There are three types of IIITs in India:



  • The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT)


Indian Institute of Information Technology or IIIT in short, is a group of educational institutes located across India whose core focus is information technology and associated business requirements.  Five of them are established, funded and managed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the remaining eighteen are set up on the public-private partnership (PPP) model

  • Locations that are funded by MHRD include:

IIITM Gwalior, IIIT Allahabad, IIITDM Jabalpur, IIITDM Kancheepuram, IIITDM Kurnool.

  • Locations that are set up on PPP Model include:

IIIT SriCity, IIIT Guwahati, IIIT Vadodara, IIIT Kota, IIIT  Tiruchirappalli, IIIT Una, IIIT Sonepat, IIIT Kalyani, IIIT Lucknow, IIIT Dharwad, IIIT Kottayam, IIIT Manipur, IIIT Nagpur, IIIT Pune, IIIT Ranchi, IIIT Surat, IIIT Bhopal, IIIT Bhagalpur.


Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech

The candidates should have minimum CPI of either 6.0 in a 10 point scale or 60% of marks in the qualifying degree. Applicants with a valid GATE score in appropriate discipline and fulfilling specific requirements for different disciplines are eligible, as indicated

  • Computer Science & Engineering

The following are the eligibility criteria for this field:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering / Technology or equivalent in an appropriate area or  
  • MSc (Computer Science/Information Technology)  or
  • Graduates (AMIETE) from Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) in Computer Science & Engineering or
  • MCA from a recognized Institution.
  • Electronics & Communication Engineering

The following are the eligibility criteria for this field:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/ Electronics / Electronics and Communication Engineering or Equivalent or
  • MSc(Electronics) or
  • Graduates (AMIETE) from Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.


Please Note: Candidates who ae yet to appear in their qualifying degree examinations can also apply and complete all requirements for their degrees before the prescribed deadlines.


Relaxation for SC/ST/PwD Candidates

Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PwD applicants.

M.Tech Programs

Applications are invited for admission to the M.Tech program beginning July every year. The specializations in which these programs will be offered are:

M.Tech Admission Procedure

Students aspiring to seek admission in either of the IIITs mentioned above will have to appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main). Counseling process and admission for these reputed institutes is conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority.


Placements Procedure

The placement procedure begins in the month of August. Invites for campus requirements to organizations along with relevant information about batch, student profiles etc. are sent to several companies by the placement office.   

Upon confirmations from the companies, the placement office arranges for pre-placement talks with their students. Companies then conduct their selection process and shortlists students for the interviews. Post interviews, the final results are announced. Some companies may also offer Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) to students who have worked with them as part of their summer projects with them. This PPO is given at least a week before the placement procedure starts and the student has the option of either accepting the offer or participating in the placement process.

  • International Institute of Information Technology


The International Institute of Information Technology are a group of colleges supported by the State Government. Many eminent people from academia, industry are part of the Governing Council and the government presides over the governance of the institution.  There are currently 5 IIITs that are well known in India. Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech

The minimum qualification for admission to any of the post-graduate programs at IIIT’s  is 65% in four-year bachelor’s degree in engineering (i.e. B.E., B.Tech., or equivalent) and fulfilling specific requirements for different disciplines, as indicated below.

  • Computer Science & Engineering:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering/ Information Technology/ Information Systems/ Electronics & Communication Engineering in CSE from a recognized Institution.

Final-year students expecting to graduate by August 2019 may also apply.

  • Electronics & Communication Engineering

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering/ Computer Engineering/ Electronics & Communication Engineering/ Electrical Engineering /Instrumentation Engineering in ECE from a recognized Institution.

Final-year students expecting to graduate by August 2019 may also apply.

M.Tech Programs

International Institution of Information Technology calls for admissions for the following programs, for the academic year starting in august every year.

  • M.Tech CSE
  • M.Tech ECE
  • iM.Tech CSE & ECE (integrated)

Admission Procedure

Admissions to the M.Tech CSE and ECE programs are on the basis of performance in the GATE examination. GATE scores (valid as of June 1, 2019) will be considered for admission to M.Tech program. There is no fixed cut-off for GATE scores for admissions. The GATE score cut-off for 2019 will vary depending upon the actual applications received.


Admissions are open in monsoon and summer semesters every year.  Applicants (with exceptional academics along with R&D working experience) interested in research programs are allowed to apply anytime in the year through the standing committee by sending their curriculum vitae (CV). Working professionals who are employed and have a desire to pursue higher studies on a part-time basis can also apply to the Post Graduate Student Status Program (PGSSP).

The Placement office plays a vital role in reaching out to the potential recruiters to invite them to visit the Institute for campus recruitment. They network with organization, build rapport, prepare placement communication and much more to help place the students. The efforts have borne satisfactory results. All the eligible students have been able to get into jobs by the time they graduate.

  • Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology


It is an autonomous university in Delhi, India. The Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology is a research-oriented university. The key disciplines they focus on include Computer Science & allied areas like Mathematics, Electronics, Design, Social Science and Bioscience.


Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech

  • Computer Science & Engineering

Both GATE and Non GATE candidates with a degree in either  B.Tech/BE or MCA/MSc in CS/IT (& its allied areas) with a CGPA of at least 7.00 out of 10 or 65% marks can apply for admission

  • Electronics & Communication Engineering

Both GATE and Non GATE candidates with B.Tech/BE in ECE/EE (& its allied areas) or MSc in Electronics (for ECE) with a CGPA of at least 7.00 out of 10 or 65% marks can apply for admission.




Relaxation to SC, ST, OBC, PwD and CW category candidates

Candidates who fall in this category must have a CGPA of at least 6.0 out of 10 or 60% in their qualifying degree. Students who do not meet the above criteria will not be considered for admission.

Note: Candidates in the final year of their programs and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the date of registration are also eligible to apply for admissions.


M.Tech Programs

Specializations are available within CSE and ECE in the M. Tech program. The Institute offers an ‘M. Tech’ or ‘M. Tech with specialization’ for students who aspire to undertake these specializations. An ‘M.Tech’ in Computational Biology is a new program being launched with a strong focus on research and emerging area of computation in biology.

Admission Procedure

The selection for M.Tech admission happens in three phases.

1st Phase

    • The applicants are screened and shortlisted on the basis of their previous academic record and GATE scores as well. (Please note that this criterial is not applicable for Non-GATE applicants).

2nd Phase

    • The shortlisted candidates then have to appear for a written exam at IIIT-Delhi. The written exam is an aptitude test that will cover subjects like basic Mathematics, Analytical Abilities and Comprehension Skills.
    • Candidates are invited for the third phase based on how they fared in the written test and their previous academic records. The interviews take place in IIIT Delhi.

3rd Phase

    • This is a personal interview round. The candidates are interviewed by IIIT Delhi Faculty members and this is followed by verification of the candidate’s relevant documents.  

Note for CSE candidates:  The candidates applying for M.Tech in CSE (all specializations), if shortlisted for the second stage (test and interview), will have to participate in an online coding competition. The results of this online coding competition will be considered in the stages that follow.

Details for online coding competition: Applicable only for M.Tech (CSE) Applicants

All applicants for M.Tech CSE must take part in one of the long run CodeChef challenges ( which are held every month. These are typically named as January challenge 2019, February challenge 2019, etc. For the purpose of our M.Tech CSE admission in 2019, we will consider the result of any long run challenge held during (or after) January 2019. Note that since the date of on-campus written test and interview is May, 2019, this means that even if you have not attempted any long run challenges yet, you can still attempt long run challenges in the upcoming months of May 2019. Important Note:

  • New User in Codechef: If you are creating a new username for Codechef, you must use the e-mail id you that you have listed in your IIITD application form.
  • Existing User: If you are already an existing user in Codechef, then make sure to provide the same email id in your IIITD application form. This is mandatory, else your scores will be ignored.
  • Both New and Existing users: You must enter the IIIT Delhi application ID in the About Me field on the Codechef registration page.
  • Solve as many problems as you can within the prescribed time period
  • Submit your solutions and obtain your score.


If you have been shortlisted for the written test, please remember to bring a print out of your result and your code.

Seat Allotment Procedure

The preferences of specialization submitted by the candidates at the time of application will be taken into consideration. However, seats will be allotted in the order of merit. The results are displayed on the website.


Placement Procedure

The Placement Office sends invitations to companies/organizations. Once the organizations confirm their availability, they are invited to the campus as per the allotted dates to conduct PPT /tests and/or interviews according to their recruitment process. The company/ organization will furnish the final list of selected students on the same day of campus visit. The company will hand over the duly signed hard copy of the final selection list to the placement cell.
