CAT2024 threw a curveball by changing the pattern of the paper. From 66 questions last year, the number of questions increased to 68 this year, with the change coming from only the DILR section. The number of questions in this section increased from 20 last year to 22 this year, with two sets of 5 questions each and three sets of 4 questions each.
The other change in the pattern of the paper was in the VARC section in which the Para Formation questions were missing this year after appearing in the CAT for at least 10 consecutive years. In addition to this, this time, the VA questions were interspersed with RC passages and could have caused a minor inconvenience to students who expected RC passages to appear as a block.
In terms of difficulty, the VARC section was comparable to last year’s CAT, and can be classified as a moderate-difficult section across the three slots. The DILR section would have provided some respite to the student’s this year as there were a greater number of doable questions this year. The QA section also was slightly easier than last year’s CAT with more questions which were only moderately difficult.
Comparing across slots, Slot 2 was slightly more difficult than Slot 1. However, Slot 3 was slightly easier than the other two slots, across sections.
