rajeshsaraf : You don't have to necessarily attempt all the questions. Scan through the questions which you find easy and attempt them first and then when you are left with time, go ahead and attempt the moderate-difficult questions.

rajeshsaraf : from 0 to 9: 10 digits. Also from 10 to 84, number of numbers = (84-10 +1 = 75). So, the number of digits = 75*2 +10 =150+10 =160.

ramratnam : MC = mock cat; CRT = Cat Replica Test. A CRT replicates an exact model of CAT in a certain year. A Mock Cat is just that.

rajeshsaraf : Go by the merit of the question. Sometimes, the set, at its face value, may appear to be ultra difficult, but a couple of questions might just be very easy. So, again spot for the easy questions which need not be the first question of that particular set

gokul : hi, i got QA-60 VA-97 in CAT '12 .. this is my first AIMCAT in 2013.. i could see an improvement in QA but i was able to get only 74 in VA which is my strong area... What do you think went wrong? What should I do? thanks
lexminair : Your percentile depends on various factors. So pls dont get disheartened with a lowered score. Please keep the efforts on, and dont miss any of the AIMCATS. Practice is the key!!

sridharan : DEfinitely if you focus on your performances . Understand that there is nothing impossible.It all depends only on your sustained focus.

asim : Mock cat is a exam that you can take whenever you feel like, you do not receive any percentile for it ( your performance is not relatively evaluated), an AIMCAT is simulation of CAT, where you receive sectional and over percentiles.

viveknair : No. They are roughly of the same level. The pressure of the exam might be one of the reasons for the different scores. Also, percentiles are more important than scores because that is how you understand whether something was tough only for you or for everyone.

rajeshsaraf : A comprehensive analysis need to be carried out. (not just in terms of percentile scored) but other parameters like types of qs left out, number of easy questions left out, number of difficult questions attempted..etc Read that article on CAT SHP regarding "How to get the best out of AIMCATs".

ramratnam : An AIMCAT is a pan-India test. A mock is not a pan-India one.

asim : Well in case you are a gen category student then an avg of 90 + percentile should be good enough, though let me add that this is not the time to predict your CAT-13 percentile as there are a lot of AIMCATS remaining.

viveknair : CRTs are complete tests that you can take at home. No AIR ranks, comparative analysis etc. AIMCATs are complete tests with detailed analysis and ranking. Sectional tests are smaller tests on a few specific topics mostly.

asim : T.I.M.E. material is more than enough, in case you still insist, then you can refer to the Trishna publication's books on the same, they are available at most of the T.I.M.E. offices.

sridharan : No. That book contains questions which are mostly direct applications and may suit exams other than CAT.

ramratnam : Knowing what their functions are in sentences and how much overlapping is possible and where is more important than remembering the terms. The CAT doesn't actually ask you to identify a word's part of speech. Focus is on usage. For example, in how many ways a noun can be used and what are its properties, etc.

sunil : Strictly speaking QA is also nothing but reasoning! what exactly do you want to improve in QA or LR

raks : Sir, I heard that Aimcats,(especially 1418) are tougher than the CAT examination...is it true or just a myth?
rajeshsaraf : The difficulty level is not the issue. If the paper is difficult, it's going to be the case for everyone. So, even with the lesser number of attempts, you can score a very high percentile.

abc : sir i have attempted difficult question in VA and also got few of them right so does attempting difficult question give you edge from others in increase in percentile?
lexminair : There is also the risk of getting the difficult q wrong...Also, it is not "edge from" but "edge over"

viveknair : A few AIMCAT scores are not enough to judge your ability. Please analyse where you are going wrong. typically, we make the same mistakes over and over again. Your first performance shows that you can perform well on your good days. You will need to learn from your mistakes and then you will find the scores and percentiles zoom up.

ramratnam : If you meant 'all the words' the answer would be NO. Remember, every exam has a target vocabulary depending its level. An exam like CAT focuses on high-frequency words, vogue words and confusables among the important words.

Since you dont ahve a choice in CAT RCs, the attitude shoud be a natural curiosity to read and comprehend anything.Secondly,the reading ahs to be evry purposepul,by habit. You should have a habit of catching on the central idea and supporting ideas in each para. 3rdly,the focus should not be to "finish" reading, which is what happens when the subject doesnt interest you.

lexminair : Since follows a percentile score system, there is not "definite" number of qs to answer. Ultimately it depends on how the others have done, how many of your answers are correct, and how many wrong.A safe judgement based on your level of preparedness is the call of the hour!

ramratnam : 34 what? Attempts or corrects? Anyway, your performance depends on your accuracy with a fairly big number of attempts. A greater no of attempts with lower accuracy is as bad as a lower no of attempts with a greater accuracy. Based of many tests and analyses, you should arrive at the 'golden no' applicable to you. It needs many tests and detailed analysis to do that. One single no or a single figure for accuracy cannot actually be quoted.

deepak : Get your grammar basics right. Spend time reading the study material and practice exercises on shp. You cannot ignore any sub section while preparing,that will only be reducing your chances even before you give the exam

karan : Sir, please help me. I cracked IITJEEE, i am in DTU, i have always been in top batches of all institutes and always a 90 percenter. In 3 AIMCATs, my %iles were 90.8, then 80.4, then 81.5. rajeshsaraf : You know you have it in you. All that you have to do is to concentrate a bit harder. These are initial stages of your preparation. Take the last sets of drop ion percentiles as a blessing in disguise. Work hard, so that you can scale further up and far in your goals. All the best !!

ramnath : Focus only on 1 year's material. You will not be able to devote enough attention/coverage if you target both.

vishnu : My accuracy rate has been quite low in 1418.around 65%.how far does this matter and how much should it ideally be?
viveknair : That is fine initially. Quant accuracy has to be better than this (>80%). For now, this kind of verbal accuracy is fine. Towards the end, you can improve on that as well. Do analyse where you are making mistakes time and again. The mere knowledge of that makes you more alert when you attempt those qtns.

sunil : dear vki, it depends on your level of comfort with QA and your overall aptitude. on an average, four sessions of three hours each should be sufficient to cover most of the topic.

sunil : firstly work on your calculation speed. Practice speed maths techniques taught in the class and use the practice SM given. Then revise the basics of DI from the SM and work on the practice exercises given in the SM. Work out the DI Online sectional tests and other handouts and test papers covered in class.

sunil : The RCs in CAT and the AIMCATs are moderately lengthy. Concentration during reading is a very critical skill that one must develop to fare well in RCs. This concentration can be developed through discipline and practice

viveknair : If you continue scoring above 90 percentile always, your chances are very good. Your present performance also shows good promise.

rajeshsaraf : Get exposure to as many models of questions related to these areas - Ratio, proportion, variations, percentages. As far as possible, go into as much of details. Try to figure out what is distributing in you Ratios or percentages (is it conversion of percentage to fractions, is it basic calculations, concepts of profit %, discount% etc). All this is possible when you take a leap into the questions from the Study material.

jo : sir, whenever i write a test, i tend to attempt medium and difficult ones and also manage to get good percentage of them correct, but the ones that are easy for others, im not able to attempt them or get them right. What will be the affect of this in real cat? How can i improve on recognising and attempting easy level questions
rajeshsaraf : There is no specific way to identify easy questions. It will vary from individual to individual. This will come from sincere practice. Usually easy questions are ones which you have had exposure to earlier on.Even if you take DI, out of 9-10 questions, there will, definitely, be at least 3 easy questions(which can be done within 90 seconds/qs). You need to develop such understanding by practicing more through AIMCATs

mj : sir my aim is to clear xat or snap as i dont thinki ll b able to crack cat ...how should i approach..?..az only 4 5 months are left and honestly i hav not studied proprly yet..can i still do it..??
asim : Do not do this, do not give up on CAT, remember around 80 of the TOP 100 B=schools accept CAT scores, still time is there, pull up your sleeves and start your preparation for CAT-13.

rajeshsaraf : Go through the Study material/handouts. The best part of DI is you can start from any area. Essentially, there is no prerequisite here(however, you need to practice speed maths regularly). So, that does not really matter, whether you pick up pie charts first or tables first for practice. Just make sure that you practice on a regular basis.

xlri : hi , ihad been getting very low scores in QA part because of high negative marking.but doing the same questions offline i found that about 10 questions were quite easy and i was solve them correctly including DI.What should be the strategy for me to counter this weakness as this happens with me in most of the AIMCAT?Kindly help me in this. sridharan : Initially start doing only questions about which you are very confident. Slowly after you get over your initial nervousness you will start doing better.

harsha : Sir, I had scored 5.39%ile in AIMCAT1419 where as AIMCAT1418 I scored 19.74%ile should i consider my performance is improving?
deepak : Statistically, it is. But realistically speaking, you would agree that both the scores are far from a desirable level. Top 50 schools will call a percentile not less than 80.

viveknair : It could typically mean that in certain areas you are very good, in others you are not. Hence, the scores vary a lot depending on the areas from where the questions come. Do analyse that and work on your weak areas. Could be stress on the D day too..

ruchi : how to increase vocab?? i m constantly reading newspapers and writing down the new words...but still my performance is not going gud
ramratnam : VOCAB-DEVELOPMENT TIPS: Tip One: READ A LOT! Most words can be learned from context. The more you read, the more words you shall get exposed to and the more words you get exposed to the better vocabulary you will have. Hence, read, read and read. Pay especially close attention to unfamiliar words while reading. Look, as to what the context is and try to guess the meaning. (DO NOT, AT THIS POINT, REFER TO THE DICTIONARY.) Go ahead and complete the reading matter and then, you may refer to the dictionary. Well, then, read a LOOOOOOOOT! Tip Two: REFER: Well, I mean, you must refer to the dictionary for the meanings of the new words you came across. Now, if possible make a note of the words, their primary meanings, secondary meanings and especially their contextual usage. Refer to any Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. Tip Three: LEARN: This is a technique that I gathered from my twelve-year experience as an English lecturer. Really, a sincere effort to learn the meanings of the difficult words we made note of along with their usage DOES HELP. Tip Four: REPEAT: Only learning the words, their meanings and usage won't help because there’s the danger of forgetting. Our memory is short-lived, unless, of course, we make efforts to counter this. One method is to repeat the words as many times as possible during the period immediately after learning them. I read about a research which said that if one repeats a word 10 to 15 times, it will never be forgotten. So, repeat by using it general conversations, by writing the word in sentences, by conducting self-memory-tests, by making flash cards of your own. Tip Five: Take the help of Vocabulary development books. There are quite a few vocabulary books in the market. The ones that I recommend are: STUDENTS’ COMPANION by Wilfred D Best or RUPA’S ENGLISH MANUAL by Rupa publications (for those who believe they need to begin at the basics); WORD POWER MADE EASY by Norman Lewis (for those who believe vocabulary is boring and also for those who believe they past the basic stage); ALL ABOUT WORDS by Maxwell Nurnberg, Morris Rosenblum (there are many more books by these two authors) and INSTANT VOCABULARY by Ida Ehrlich (for a very systematic approach to the learning of words). Tip Six: Play Vocabulary Development Games: Yes, games do help. Browse the net for the games, select the ones that suit your level and enjoy learning words like never before. TIP ABOVE ALL THE TIPS, THE SEVENTH TIP: ATTEND ALL THE VOCABULARY CLASSES. Do never miss the opportunity to learn new and difficult but very important words under the expert guidance of the faculty. Every vocabulary class should be the starting point of a learning session in your preparation for CAT.

ramratnam : It's a very tricky thing as the two sub-areas in verbal: RC and Non-RC are actually interrelated. One can't be good at one and at the same time bad at the other. ramnath : Do not look at the max marks. No reason to thik about it. The first person to get into, lets say, IIMA may have got all 60 on 60. All YOU need is to get enough to be in the short list. Do not look for reasons to pull yourself down. Look for those that will push you up.

rohan : Sir, I am a 2012 B.Tech. graduate with about an year of work ex. I secured 97.97 percentile in CAT-2012. My academics are 85.4 in X,77 in XII and 5.91 CGPA on a scale of 10. Which colleges shall I aim for this time where my poor grad score doesn't holds me back?
asim : Aim at the IIMs, remember a good number of IIMs do not give high weightage to acads, work harda nd do very well in CAT/GD/ESSAY/PI rounds.

viveknair : You should try to revise some of the topics in each section once every week

prakash : Sir how to do well in Grammar and i find it difficult to remember all the exceptional rules in each topic...
ramratnam : GRAMMAR: HOW TO IMPROVE In the available short period of time you can do this much: First, take all our grammar handouts, pick one, let's say grammar 1 ho, and identify the relevant topics, Nouns, Agreement etc. Then take V102 and thoroughly study the relevant topics in it, finish the exercise/s and then deal with the questions in the ho. In this manner, finish all the handouts. Then, deal with the grammar exercises in the VA practice book. Finally, test your grammar knowledge in all the past AIMCATS. GRAMMAR: APPROACH TO QUESTIONS Sentence Correction Approach– Usually, the CAT breaks some of the sentences from a paragraph into pieces. Therefore, our first task is to mentally join those divided pieces and look at the sentence as a whole. Step 1:As you read the sentence, see if you see any familiar grammar point related indicators/words, like, not only—but also, no sooner—than, etc. If any such indicators are indeed there, recollect the grammar point and see if any correction is required. Step 2: If step 1 doesn't help, then divide the sentence into its clauses. (See, the CAT divides it deceptively randomly such that the error escapes us). Step 3: Now consider each clause separately— first, look at subjects, objects i.e., nouns and pronouns, and verbs. Check if any of these three important parts of speech is breaking the rule/s. Second, look for adjectives and adverbs, if any, and see if any of them is doing something wrong. Thirdly, identify prepositions and conjunctions, and check if any of those is wrongly used. Finally, look at the semantic, grammatical and logical connections/placement between/among the clauses. Remember, you MUST keep the intended meaning/sense/logic of the sentences throughout your approach. Sense guides grammar, not vice versa.

ramratnam : It's been about a week between the last time and now. Have faith in yourself and T.I.M.E. Please be patient. You are dealing with CAT. No. 1: I hope you are not reading for 3 hrs at a stretch. Do that for 2 hrs at a stretch, not three. No. 2: Are your ensuring variety? Do that. No. 3: Are you following a method? If so what? And, most importantly, are you cross-checking to check your comprehension in standard mock RC tests. Finally, are you analysing your performance and identifying the strengths and weaknesses? If you do all these patiently, for, let's say a month from now, you WILL surely do well in RC. Faith, patience and consistency are the key. DO NOT BE DEMOTIVATED. AND, FOR YOUR CONFUSION BETWEEN ANSWERS, HERE SOME ADVICE:...... TWO CHOICE DILLEMMA Unlike what most students thinks, this is easy to overcome. If you are stuck between two choices, DON'T DO WHAT MOST STUDENTS DO—take one choice at a time, check with the passage whether it is a strong contender and then consider the other—THIS IS WRONG! INSTEAD, identify the difference between the two choices—now, there will be some difference, be it specific, or general. After noting the difference, recheck/reconsider as to what the question seeks; surprisingly, the answer becomes clear here. If it is not clear yet, keep the 'difference' and 'what' the question seeks in mind and re-read the passage to check what it 'says' about the difference. ramnath : Wrong Qs lower your score and hence your percentiles. Doesnt have anything to do with normalisation. However, no point in worrying about normalisation - you get nothing from it. Focus instead on maximising your score.

ramnath : There will be no results for CRTs ans MCs as these are tests available on your page to take whenever you want.

ramratnam : Assuming that you read enough, let me tell you that the best source for CAT-vocab prep is The Advanced Learner's Oxford Dictionary. After the first reading during which time you should not refer to the dictionary, re-read. During this second reading you should refer to the dictionary and check not just the meaning but the usage as well. SOME MORE TIPS WITH SOME SOURCES MENTIONED..... VOCAB-DEVELOPMENT TIPS: Tip One: READ A LOT! Most words can be learned from context. The more you read, the more words you shall get exposed to and the more words you get exposed to the better vocabulary you will have. Hence, read, read and read. Pay especially close attention to unfamiliar words while reading. Look, as to what the context is and try to guess the meaning. (DO NOT, AT THIS POINT, REFER TO THE DICTIONARY.) Go ahead and complete the reading matter and then, you may refer to the dictionary. Well, then, read a LOOOOOOOOT! Tip Two: REFER: Well, I mean, you must refer to the dictionary for the meanings of the new words you came across. Now, if possible make a note of the words, their primary meanings, secondary meanings and especially their contextual usage. Refer to any Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. Tip Three: LEARN: This is a technique that I gathered from my twelve-year experience as an English lecturer. Really, a sincere effort to learn the meanings of the difficult words we made note of along with their usage DOES HELP. Tip Four: REPEAT: Only learning the words, their meanings and usage won't help because there’s the danger of forgetting. Our memory is short-lived, unless, of course, we make efforts to counter this. One method is to repeat the words as many times as possible during the period immediately after learning them. I read about a research which said that if one repeats a word 10 to 15 times, it will never be forgotten. So, repeat by using it general conversations, by writing the word in sentences, by conducting self-memory-tests, by making flash cards of your own. Tip Five: Take the help of Vocabulary development books. There are quite a few vocabulary books in the market. The ones that I recommend are: STUDENTS’ COMPANION by Wilfred D Best or RUPA’S ENGLISH MANUAL by Rupa publications (for those who believe they need to begin at the basics); WORD POWER MADE EASY by Norman Lewis (for those who believe vocabulary is boring and also for those who believe they past the basic stage); ALL ABOUT WORDS by Maxwell Nurnberg, Morris Rosenblum (there are many more books by these two authors) and INSTANT VOCABULARY by Ida Ehrlich (for a very systematic approach to the learning of words). Tip Six: Play Vocabulary Development Games: Yes, games do help. Browse the net for the games, select the ones that suit your level and enjoy learning words like never before. TIP ABOVE ALL THE TIPS, THE SEVENTH TIP: ATTEND ALL THE VOCABULARY CLASSES. Do never miss the opportunity to learn new and difficult but very important words under the expert guidance of the faculty. asim : Well looking at your percentiles, i think your basics are pretty weak, first of all complete your basic study material, collect your doubts and discuss them with a faculty member.

lexminair : All areas of VA depend on your reading. NOTHING else. The vocab questions are also context based.If your level of constructive reading is good, Vocab issues will get resolved on their own.

prk : sir I scored 65 in section 1 and 15 in section 2. How to balance it out ?
viveknair : 65 is fine. Dont try to balance it out. As such, the sections are timed differently. Try to improve stamina and sustain your alertness levels by writing more mocks. Improve on the 15, Please analyse where you are going wrong. typically, we make the same mistakes over and over again.

acca3l302 : sir its very difficult to eliminate a sentence out of four choices which is not part of the paragraph so how can it be dealt with
lexminair : The Para odd man question is not usually like vocab odd man qstn. Pls note that three of the four statement can come in a sequence. That is a cluse to choose the right answer. Secondly, three of the four will speak of the same aspect of the subject, whereas the fourth one may be of the ame subject, but different aspect.

lexminair : Pls understand that the AIMCATS are a reality check. They help you evaluate the additional prep that you need. So use these tests to make your preps robust. The scores will vary initially vary and depending on ur prep, they will get better and stabilise. Moreover, the atmosphere of writing the test creates a stress initially, which will affect ur performance. Keep the hard wrk on, and take your test in peace.. WITHOUT MISSING ANY OF THEM!!!!

viveknair : Are you sure? Joining a batch has other advantages apart from classes alone. Getting an idea of the competition, regular classes that help you prepare with some discipline, ideas on how to prepare from peers, doubt clarifications by faculty etc. Otherwise, the correspondence course will give you enough material to prepare on your own.

ramratnam : I won't give you HOURS per se as it differs from person to person. I SHALL HOWEVER GIVE YOU A GENERAL PLAN, DECIDE THE HOURS FOR YOURSELF:..... July: focus on attending all the available classes and follow faculty guidelines and do a lot of general study. First three weeks of August: focus on building strong fundas and strengthening different aspects of the different areas tested in the CAT. last week of august and the first week of september: Read all that stuff u'd always wanted to read but could not...as much as possible. No compromise here. Cover especially the areas hitherto not covered and any weak areas/subjects. Also, read that grammar book u'd wanted to read and were supposed to read by now...V102, the Study material...it's now or never. For Vocab, go through all the words in the list(the last ) provided by Norman in his book, Word Power Made Easy and revise the words in the flash cards. Before u take Aimcat 10, evaluate ur performance so far(do it at least now, please,) and based on that develop that cat-strategy u've always wanted to develop. Start putting it into practice from aimcat 10 and don't forget to evaluate ur performance and make changes in ur strategy accordingly. the second to fourth week of september: Now is the time for tests, tests and tests only. Take timed tests, mocks or whichever tests available as follows: Take one RC test and one VA test every three days, though not necessarily on the same day and not on the aimcat day. That means, 4 tests a week(2 RC and 2 VA) in addition to aimcat. Most importantly, do micro analysis of ur performance sharpen ur cat-strategy and put it into practice in the aimcat. The tests need to be both online and paper and pencil tests... Work separately on areas or question types u identify as weak areas etc. Especially, focus on the Critical Reasoning/Reasoning type of questions. Finally, there should not be a question type u may decide/want to leave untouched in the CAT--that's the final target. the first and second week of October: A revision of all the aimcats and any other full length tests, past or present, and that includes revising the past cat papers. Start putting ur final VA strategy into practice like an expert. Develop the confidence of expert test takers. Set higher challenges or targets like greater speed, accuracy etc., and work on them. Revise any basic concepts u identify as weak areas. Go steady with the number of hours u put in...don't overdo anything and don't get overstressed, especially, DON'T, AT THIS TIME, INCREASE THE NUMBER OF HOURS...IF ANYTHING, REDUCE THE HOURS...UR SUPPOSED TO PEAK IN THE ACTUAL CAT. WELL, THROUGHOUT UR PREPARATION, HAVE CONFIDENCE IN URSELF; DON'T BE BOGGED DOWN BY LOW PERCENTILE OR BE COMPLACENT BY HIGH--99%ile or 9%ile, ur post-test reaction should be the same. Remember, ur hard work and earnest efforts will not fail u! ALL THE BEST!

viveknair : Yes. Some IIMs like IIM calcutta have consistently given high weight-ages to CAT scores and GD PI marks. So it is possible to get into an IIM from the effort that you are putting in now. Of course, diligent effort and high percentiles will be required.

sridharan : 3 months is enough time provided you make proper use of it. Plan properly ,say preparing on all topics for about 4-5 hours daily, reading newspapers , attending and analysing all AIMCATS etc.You will definitely get through .

lexminair : It cant be overstated that purposeful reading is the only way to improve your RC score. Capturing the central idea of the paragraphs, understanding the flow, and the focal idea of the passage as whole, the tone of the author and the style he implements ...are all easy only when the practice is regular and voluminous.

atul : I generall do well in Quant... but I haven't improved even a single bit in Verbal. Everytime, I manage to reach only 50% accuracy. No I fear that if I only attempt lesser questions, then they all might go wrong and I will end up getting negative in verbal.
sridharan : Verbal is comparitively amore difficult part because of many reasons. Pls understand that it is so for others also and CAT is an exam where only relative performance counts.

vishnu : is it ok if we start preparation now..?
viveknair : yes. you still have time. But no shortcuts. Work on the basics. Focus on the weak areas. Work on them. Practise. Set lower targets for now so that you have more time per qtn. Once it gets higher, we can increase number of attempts / speed.

deepak : Acads do play a role, but the extent is grossly exaggerated. It wouldnt be more than a 10 or 15 points out of 100. For his 70% he would have gotten a 7/10 as against an 90% er getting 9/10. The selection criteria is heavily stacked in favor of cat, gd, essay and interview. So don't worry.

deepak : Just reading and going through papers will not do at all! Practice is a very crucial part that needs to be given as much importance as preparation.

sridharan : It si wrong to skip geometry . If you understand the basic concepts you will know that it is one of the easiest chapters in Quants.

prakash : Sir i am weak in Quants but i am practicing hard to become strong in it...In every AIMCAT's when i see a familiar quant ques i tend to sit in the same ques for more than 10 min until i get the spark...Is it good to make the mind think harder so that i can get the spark soon or better to skip the question...Kind advice needed...
sridharan : You must have the mind to mercilessly drop questions which you consider are time consuming. After spending 2 min if you find the answer is elusive forget and proceed to other questions. Come back if you find extra time.

sridharan : There is nothing like a syllabus for CAT . However the topics you have mentioned have made rare appearances in CAT. However to keep the students totally prepared for any types we atke up all these chapters also.

lexminair : Trisha, the first couple of AIMCATS may be poor shows for some, but this should in no way 'dishearten' you. The experience should be taken in your stride and used for better performance each time. So dont worry..Dont miss any AIMCATS, and dont slow down your preparations at any cost.

sridharan : Reading newspapers , magazines, books etc.

ramratnam : The answer is both. See, quant and DI are left brain activities, VA is right-brain activity and LR involves both. So doing one area alone on a day won't make sense just like carrying a bucket full of water with one hand alone isn't. Giving both the hemispheres equal exercise is advised and required. In fact, an expert said that if you work both the brains simultaneously on the same day, you would not be tired(read bored) and your brain power or output or performance actually increases. So doing 1 hr of quant and then an hour of Va then followed by DI then VA again and then LR would be great. I said 1 hr doesn't mean ONE necessarily. It should be neither too long nor too short. Each period should do justice to a part of the subject.

sridharan : Pls dont read the paragraphs too deeply by spending more time. As you are going to anyway read the parts while answering the questions you acn a cursory glance while reading the passage to give you a rough sketch of the passage.

sunil : dear emmanuel, 4 hrs a day is is a very good amount of time, given that you are working. While there is no single approach that will help you crack qa questions in general, it will help to put down all the information present in a question in a clear manner and then consider the concepts and formulae that pertain to the situation.

sridharan : Lr questions in CAT are usually of the same difficult level as AIMCATS.

deepak : It is a function of difficulty of paper, how others attempt the paper at the same time as you. Cannot be determined.

lexminair : The points to be noted for PCQs are : a) The option should be both a continuation from the passage, and a completion. The term "completion" means that the statement leaves nothing more to be said on the subject.2) It is not a repetition of the given ideas 3) It will not be an entirely new aspect 4) It may give a hint of what follows inthe next para.

viveknair : Yes. Once you join a good B school, you will be managing so many things together. Hence, job and study can definitely go hand in hand. It is not going to be easy given the competition. But its definitely possible. Several tens of thousands are attending the same classes that you are attending. So, Just the classes will not help you. You will have to put in significant hours in prep. Finish SM, move to Online sectional test and then analyse the AIMCATs thoroughly.

utk : Sir,pertaining to questions 1 & 2 of section 2 (circular arrangement),there lies a difference between of being "immediate right" to someone and of being just "right" to someone in a circular arrangement,but according to TIME solution,it has been by default thought of as an immediate right case.If we assume (rightly according to the context written)that it is to the right case,it will have a lot of possibilities and the question becomes completely ambiguous. please elaborate.
sridharan : In circualr arrangement right can only mean immediate right as all positions in relation to other positions can be considered as both right and left. So right has no meaning except when it is immediate right.In a linear arrangement only it counts.

sridharan : Enough to tackle CAT. It is because though there are lacs and lacs of words CAT concentrates on only the words in contextual usage which may be only around a thousand.

viveknair : You cannot go into the exam thinking that I need to do only 1 or 2 DI sets. If on that day, Quant is tougher, then all DI sets must be attempted. Hence, be prepared to attempt at least 1 qtn in each set if need be.

sridharan : AS the difficulty level is slowly increasing this may happen. Dont panic. Get over nervousness and take every question as if it is the only question to be answered. After all one of the purposes of AIMCAT is to remove your fear.
