karan
:
Sir, should we attack DI in the beginning? (i have heard we must not keep it for the end).
asim
:
Well there is no hard and fast rule for this, the reason most people say this is because towards the end you may not have enough time to solve a set based question, instead single questions require less time and hence it would be easier to do them. I would recommend you do experiment in the next couple of AIMCATs and see what suits you better.
|
karan
:
Sir, how much time per DI set (say of 3 questions) should we give?
prakashrajput
:
depends on the difficulty level.

kapilbhandari

Dear Harsitaa
If you are good at school level quants, then you stand a good chance to enhance your chances of clearing the exam. Consistency and daily commitment is the key
|
akshatha
:
sir, in many of DI question, the numbers are very big,and hw to solve them easily
asim
:
Well the speed maths book provided to you is very useful in this regard, make sure you practice all the concepts mentioned in it.
|
aj
:
Can I get time material only on QA and DI?
asim
:
No, though another option is that you could refer to Trishna publications' book on the same, it is available at most of the T.I.M.E. offices
|
harsitaa
:
yess sir agreed but the time consumed by me to do speed math was tooo much and i dont kno how to go further and complete
kapilbhandari
:
Every thing takes its own sweet time. There is no substitute to practice. Initially it will take time, but if you use the skills in your routine work, your time consumption will go down.
Stop using calculators and do as much of mental calculations as possible.
|
akshatha

There is no min number, though T.I.M.E. material is more than sufficient in this regard.

My Q.A is my weakness (even though being from Maths background). In AIMCAT1420 I couldn't even attempt one question confidently. I am in terrible confusion. Whether I can get a decent score in the upcoming AIMCAT(s) (By the way I booked my slot tomorrow for AIMCAT1419). I even not able to clear cutoffs, when will I compete with top scorers. I am following my strategies for all the sections but QA. It is taking lot of time for grasping concept. Is CAT not for my kind of candidates?

Hi sir!!!I am very weak in QA and DI and Since the time for CAT is just like 150 days or less ,what level of Questions and what time should I devote daily to improve over it? and How should I improve my speed?
kapilbhandari
:
The foremost thing is get hold of your concepts and then practice hard on it.
No point in getting tense over the time left.
Once you are clear about your concepts, then start with easy level and move gradually to the medium and difficult level Qs

Dear Sairam, most of the top B-schools gives result in percentile, which is very subjective. So as such there is nothing fixed about the %ages. However for top B-schools, as per trend, you should score 60%+

what the most important topics in QA in which we should practise different varieties of questions to prepare for CAT?

Goodevening teachers.. While doing lr/di questions in online test available on shp, I always end up exceeding the time limit.. Also the constant ticking away of clock is a distraction and breaks the concentration required.

how much hours of time should i allot for both quant and di for each day..???

1. It is not necessary to do everything everyday. You can take up one assignment, finish it and then get on with another. The idea is that the overall balance should be maintained.
|
yashu

What is the level of di que in aimcat, which part i shud prepare????

Sir, MCs and CRTs are found on SHP. When should we attempt them, all of us are very focused on AIMCATs, none of faculty have suggested about MCs or CRTs what is the apt time to attempt them?

You can get started with the MCs and CRTs right away. The CRTs will give you a good perspective into the various tpyes of questions and the exact nature.
|
yashu

Sir %ile in aimcat can assure above 95%ile in cat

My query is should we refer to any other book for preparing for QA and DI , although hardly any time is left after solving TIMES material ? and if yes, could you please tell which book should we refer ?

If you can practice complete material given by T.I.M.E. (HOs, TGs, Sectional test, Books, MCs, CRTs, AIMCATs, etc), then that is sufficient
|
rashmita
:
sir, the material which is given has only 7 exercises each with 20 questions. is it enough for CAT 2013 including online mock test
asim

You need to take the online sectional tests, mock cats, crts and the AIMCATs also

sir would you suggest me the way for preparing quant , i can't able to attempt the questions confidently when i attempted the AIMCAT's ,how can i improve it
prakashrajput
:
1. If you think your QA skills would be under the 70%ile mark, begin with a basic book. The book of preference could be Quantitative Aptitude by Trishna (Inhouse publication of TIME). And remember, CAT is not the end of the world. There are many other MBA Entrance exams that your are going to write at the end of the year. And most of these ask much simpler questions in QA as compared to CAT. So, hang on.
2. The most important topics in QA are Numbers, Geometry & Mensuration, Theory of Equations (Quadratic Equations) and Permutation & Combination. You should solve as many questions as possible on these 4 topics.
3. Go through your performance in the AIMCATs to identify the following categories of topics (the analysis section has a topic wise view option in each AIMCAT)
1. Topics where your attempt percentage is high and the accuracy is more than 75% (these are the areas you think you know and you actually know). While writing a mock, you should try and solve most of these questions in the first round.
2. Topics where your attempt percentage is high and the accuracy is less than 75% (these are the areas you think you know but you actually dont know). This is the area which is killing your accuracy in the tests and is wasting most of your time too. These would be relatively easier to master. You should first focus on these topics and solve some high difficulty level questions (TIME study material, Online tests). While writing a mock, you should be very cautious with the questions from these areas as you tend to make more mistakes here.
3. Topics where your attempt percentage is less than 50% (areas you are not very comfortable with) – you should solve the level 1 and level 2 problems in these areas to get a handle. In the meanwhile, you should leave questions from these areas for the second and third iterations while writing a mock.
4. Solve the study material in blocks (Arithmetic as one block, Numbers as one, Algebra, Geometry and Modern Math etc.). This will help better assimilate your thoughts, help you know what percentage of the syllabus you have completed etc.
5. Get on with the online tests right away.
6. Solve any exercise as a test. For CAT level exercises, you should target 30 Q in 70 min and for easier difficulty level questions, you should try solving 1 question per min. So, if an exercise has 120 Q, you should try to solve it in 120 min. This way, you cover more ground in lesser time, your focus is better, distrations are lower and you get ample practice for staying focussed during an AIMCAT/CAT.
|

:
R/ faculty , i am not very comfortable with the topics P n C and functions. how should i approach to get it done or will it affect if i leave them ??

if in section one i attempt and get most quant questions right, and skip the DI questions, will it reflect in the selection process or is just the sectional cut-off considered.
prakashrajput

Its not a good strategy. Attempt both the areas. The easy questions can be anywhere.

Hello Professors!!! I am starting my preparation now. Can I make it if I start now? I can spend 10-12 hours for preparation. How much time I should spend on DI & QA?
prakashrajput

There is no fixed time for any section per se. You have just about sufficient time for prep. Get on.
|
akshatha

sir wen taking up aim cats, im afraid of leaving question,,how many ques can be left?

Try and solve as many questions as you can. The remaining will be automatically left.

in maths am i right in assuming the imp chapters are numbers, ppl, geometry, permutations and combinations, progressions?

Not a safe thing to do esp with CAT being conducted on multiple days, prepare for all the chapters

sir, I always end up exceeding the time limit in most of the lr/di questions. How should I work upon it ?
kapilbhandari
:
It is always important that we select questions which we can answer fast and confidently. Continuous practice shall definitely help you. Set own goals in terms of time required and try to reduce the time gradually.
|
iimaaspirer
:
i find i'm able to crack the Concept review very easily, the section A (in time books) less easily but with a fairly good accuracy level but the section B questions rarely. any tips as we've been told section b type questions are the CAT level questions?
vjs
:
solve all the questions and mark all difficult questions and discuss in doubt clarifying sessions.
|
achieve
:
in the chat transcript it has been mentioned that for every topic there exist finite type of questions. If that be the case the CAT question paper becomes predictable. Why don't the IIM's prepare a 'googly' question paper with unprecedented difficulty level. How can one crack such a paper?
prakashrajput
:
That statement was for question types in P&C.
|
ravindrajadeja
:
what type of test ar mcs and crts
prakashrajput

CRT: CAT Replica
MC: Mock CAT
Similar in form. In the latest exam pattern.

cataspirant

approximately how much time should i give (in hrs) to a single topic in Quant? this is because I tend to get into the depth of a single topic thereby getting stuck there for a few days.

There is no fixed time per se. Try getting a hang on a topic. As much time as it takes.

Its not a major issue. A lot of students take a break to prepare for CAT.

iimaaspirer
:
how important are the catalysis sessions for quant held by time? as in the past 2 sessions the handouts weren't completed resulting in a lot of time wasted that could have alternatively been used to study quant at home?
prakashrajput

These sessions give you important insights into prep planning. Things you may not figure by yourself. Its not only about solving a question - the approach matters.

|
sunny
:
What should be the mental-approach of a non-engineering, non-commerce student while preparing for Quant & DI??
prakashrajput
:
So, hang on.
|
harshitaa

i have had good experience with IIT-JEE preparation. Therefore I have been able to solve most of the questions in QA from the TIME material. But is this overconfidence? How do I maintain this tempo till the CAT exam arrives
prakashrajput

The AIMCATs are a good measure of your level of prep. Also, focus on LA/LR if you think Quant scores are good.
|
harsha
:
Sir, how much time should I spend daily on quant?
vjs
:
focus on quality time not on quantity
|
bbcc3x304
:
sir my academics is not strong 10th-75%,12th-73%. is there any chance for me to get calls from A/B/C.
kapilbhandari

As per the past trend, this score has not been a hindrance to get calls from A/B/C. However, if A/B/C changes their criteria this year, then we can't say.
|
gaurav
:
hw to make d maximum of tym avaible?i knw there is no hard and fast rule bt still a rough idea?lyk hw to mke a balance betwn DI and QUANT?
kapilbhandari

If we go by the simple proportion of number of questions, you can get the answer. But, the approach should be more contingent. Keep on answering without thinking whether it is from DI or Quant.

Yes, sometimes its true, the solution is to practice more at home with a timer, the online mock cats and the crts are of great help in this regard.

ankit
:
Sir,VA is my weaker section can u provide me with a comprehensive book as concerned with CAT,SNAP and NMIMS point of view?
prakashrajput
:
Language Ability
1. The Language section can be divided into 4 subsections
1. Reading Comprehension
1. Read at least 15 novels over the next 4 months. This will help you develop an ability to read and remember paragraphs. The topics/titles to read is secondary. The first step is to start reading. Anything under the sun will do. But read.
2. Solve 1000 Questions on Critical Reasoning for GMAT. This is the single best thing you can do to improve your performance in the LA section. The key skill to doing well in the Language Section is to read carefully into the meaning of the sentences – what is implied and what is not. And then an ability to reason into things – the assumptions, logic, conclusion, inferences etc. CR is THE thing. And, please ensure that these 1000 Q are completed in less than 7 days straight. If you extend it too much, you miss out on developing an ability to assimilate and draw your own rules.
2. Verbal Ability (Para Jumbles, Para Completion, Para Summary)
1. Each question type in VA is governed by a set of specific rules. These would have been discussed in the class. You will also find references to these rules in the handout solutions. Have a list of these rules for each questoin type. Use it. And everytime you see that a rule is not working – analyse to identify what went wrong. This way you will learn something from every question you solve. The problem with most of us is that we solve a lot of questions, expecting to score better as we go. But that does not happen. The simple reason is that we solve them by the same method (our intuition) and look at the answers only to see if the answer was right.
2. The online sectional tests (particularly the basic difficulty level type) are a good starting point to practice these question types. The study material will have specific exercises on each of these question types as well. Use it. And do go through the solutions.
3. Grammar
1. Doing well in Grammar is not just about CAT or B-School entrance. Its something you cherish for life. Sadly, the rules are not as helpful as we would like them to be. So, something else needs to bed done. This something else is practice. Practice as many questions as you can.
2. Wren and Martin is a good book. But TIME study material is more on-the-dot. Solve the study material and keep the learning in mind.
4. Vocab
1. If your target is only CAT, then you may skip the word-list. CAT doesnt ask too many direct questions on vocab. But if you are targetting OMETs too then Wordlist is indispensable. Besides, it helps in the long term. Also, if you think you have good vocab, it will still help to go through the list once. You will know the few words you did not. But make sure you mug them well.
2. After you fininsh a page from the wordlist, try writing down the words you came across on a page. If you remember a word, you will not forget it. If you cant, you dont remember it. Go back.
3. Write tests. Lots of them. Challenge yourself.
4. Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis is a good reference book.
|

Sir,I am very weak in Quants. It takes more time for to solve a question even if i am thorough with the basics.Plz suggest me a better approach
prakashrajput
:

Sir prakashrajput, other 1 proctored test and 1 unproctored of CL.But,today i got only 6 corrects out of 8 attempted and in aimcat 1420 only 8 correct out of 11 attempted.I try other Qns. but time lapses. What i do sir?
prakashrajput
:
8 on 11 is good accuracy.
In the meanwhile, you should leave questions from these areas for the second and third iterations while writing a mock.

sumati
:
is it ok if we gave aimcat if our pereparation yet not completed
kapilbhandari
:
You must not leave any AIMCAT. Getting familiar with the environment is also important. It is also important that you clear your doubts related to the questions in AIMCAT in consultation with the faculty member later.
|
ahmed
:
when I solve questions from the material, they seem easy, however in AIMCATs it's not the case! Do I directly solve previous AIMCAT papers and Sectional test??
prakashrajput

Nope. The study material must be solved first. AIMCAT percentile is the key though. Also, try solving the intermediate and advanced level sectional tests on the homepage.

sir by which aimcat should i be comfortable to get good percentile
