sunil : hi najuka, 15 days is not long enough to move mountains, but you can still ensure that you've identifies your pitfalls/weak areas and try to work on them. Also, remember, keeping a cool mind is the best way to improve your score, even in the actual CAT!

sud : My CAt in 16th Oct.My %iles are around 85-95. In the last few days should I give more MCs or should I just practise my weak areas from BSM and OSTs?
prakashrajput : A mix of both. write 2-3 mocks a day, analyze them, identify your areas of improvement and solve questions from the material on those topics.

piyush : Sir with nearly 25 days to go for my acual CAT. What should i do right now??? what should i exactly practise??? learn??? I am getting around 97-98%ile in quant and around 60-70%ile in verbal..I am very depressed and confused so as to what should i do!! please help
asim : Focus on LR,parajumbles and paracompletion.If you need help discuss your doubts with a faculty member.Revise your basics, take the Mock cats which are available on your SHP(with proper analysis).

sravz : I havent started preparation for sentence completion. can i complete if i start them now? or should i leave them and concentrate on topics iam good at. My date is on 20th.
deepak : Sentence completion is not like, say geometry or probability that you can prepare for it. It requires you to have a good vocabulary and understanding of word collocations and which words fit in a context. If you have a good reading habit, you should be fine with that.

manan : Sir, My exam is on 5th Nov. I am getting 96 pecentile (agg.)in Maths section but in 2nd Section my marks are touching 70-80 percentile. At this point how should I plan for my both the sections ? How much Full Length Mock should I give ?
prakashrajput : You should target 2-3 mocks a day. Please ensure that you devote sufficient time for analyzing your performance though. 96 %ile in the AIMCATs is good. For the second section, practice Logical ability (10 questions), VA (jumbles, completion etc), followed by RC and grammar. For grammar, the SCHOs are very helpful.

rozcat : OFF topic sir MCRT and CRTS are not uploaded on my SHP (still mcrt 15, crt 7,8,9,10 and crt01) is not there on my SHP.? n cutoff for these are already out....!!

ramnath : Last day strategy should be to relax and let your mind settle down. DO not take any mocks on this day, infact the day before too, as any bad performance will only demoralise you, with no time to recover. make a ready reckoner of formulas for quick reference.

1990rahul : good evening sir i m getting in the range of around 85 to 92 percentile in my mocks...m attempting in the range of 44 to 46 but i m getting an average of 15 wrong..can u suggest how to improve beyond this

suyash : In initial AIMCATS i used to get around 99+ percentile but was not able to clear cutoff in 2nd section...but from last 3-4 AIMCATS my percentile has fallen to low 90s but i am clearing cutoffs in 2nd section by some margin.Please suggest what i should do for last 20 days of prepararation so that i get high 99 in real CAT.

ramnath : Mrunali...do not look at a particular score. CAT, as you know, is a percentile based exam, not score based. Your goal should be to maximise your score

gs : sir i've heard that say for example suppose 2 people get 18 ques right and one of them attempts easy questions and the other one attempts a lot of difficult ques so the percentile scored by the second person will be more?
ramnath : No. All questions carry equal weightage. There is no differential marking.

abc : Sir, i am working on identifying weak areas. along with this, what should be the strategy for next 20 days? my percentiles are in the range 80-85. attempts ~20 in QADI with 90% accuracy & ~25 in VA with 60% accuracy.
ramchandran : No special strategy . Usually , more of the same, systematic hard work will pay off

rozcat : SIR what['s the level of mCRts's as per CAT??? do they have on high par.????? m scoring between 80-90 marks in mcrts
ramnath : They are mostly at par with CAT, with some sections slightly a notch below CAT.

saurabh : Good evening Sir, My performance dipped in 1304 and 1303 to 50 percentile. my avg AIMCAT score is between 70-85 percentile. I am not able to concentrate for the whole 140 minutes. While analyzing, I found out that 6 questions that went wrong in 1303 were just because of lack of concentration. What should I do? Please help!
sunil : your problem seems to be sheer nervousness. That is, while answering one question you could be preoccupied with a previous one or others that you haven't even read yet! You will need to relax and take the questions one at a time. Also, leaving difficult questions, even if you have already spent some time on them, should be practiced strictly.

abc : When will be the result of first nmat test declared?
asim : After few weeks

raj123 : Sir, how good Great Lakes, Chennai is as compared to K J Somaiya and TAPMI, should I go for it...I am getting 75 - 85 percentiles in AIMCATs ?
asim : Their 1 year program is pretty decent, it is too early to comment on their 2 year program.

mrunali : Sir, TISS notification is out..this time sections are different. there is section called social sensitivity..wht does it mean?.wht kind of questions should be expected?

prakashrajput : Hi Mayank, The verbal section is of a similar difficulty level as the last years CAT. It may help to analyze the solutions, looking for the particular methods, and practice more on the topics that you have found particularly difficult.

prakashrajput : The RCs in the AIMCATS are similar in difficulty to the CAT last year.

asim : They do not accept CAT scores, last year they had admitted students with ICET and TANCET respectively.

mak : Hi sir, my aimcat percentiles ranges from 55-98.9....majorit of them b/w80-95...but for the last 2 mockcats i have been able to score only around 78 -79percentile..i hav 2 years of workex...is there any chance for getting admission into any of the iim? or shud i start my preps for cat 2013?
prakashrajput : Please do not be disheartened by your performance in an AIMCAT or two. A poor score in the last few mocks could be due to stress or may be a bad day. It will help to write a few mocks and get up to speed. Also, you need to look at other exams before taking a decision. You should also speak with the faculty members at your respective centre for guidance for the last few days action plan.

deep : hello sir.i am getting 85-90 percentile most of the time. with 90-95 percentile 4 times. please advice with the revision plan ?I am giving a VA & LR sectional ( From Unproctored/last year Mock ) test daily to be in touch . Please share some startegy for QA & DI section revision. I am clearing the cut-offs for both section most of the time. My D-day is on 19 Oct . Please Help
prakashrajput : For the QA area: go through the topic wise analysis (attempted, right, wrong) from the previous mocks,look for the ones that you have more mistakes in, and practice them. Next you maytake up the unattempted topics.

prince : Hi sirs, My query pertains to Q No: 32 in AIMCAT 1303. The answer was b,d,e are correct. But, as far as my knowledge in English is concerned there should be a "comma" after Egypt in option 'b' and after syria in option 'd' according the rules of punctuation. Kindly explain
ramnath : Prince, a comma is not necessary there as in that case, noadditional info is being added. Ex: In Kerala, God's own country, thousands of coconut trees...... Here, the comma after Kerala indicates that some extra info is being given. However, in the questions no such info is being given and hence a comma is not necessary. A pause there, which the comma forces will be unnecessary.

ramchandran : Our study material is good. Also, good reading will help you in your language in an overall manner

ramnath : I hope your analysis covers identifying weak areas - spotting trends of flagging performance in specific areas, quality of question selection etc. one good analysis is much better than multiple mocks with no analysis

deepak : Pick up the grammar SM and finish it or a wren and martin. Then move on to sectional tests and look at the aimcat questions in the area.

deepak : No way of answering that question, it varies from person to person. But the more qualitative time put in, the better.

sunil : while 68 is far from satisfactory, if the IIMs are considered, you should still give it your best shot and see how it turns out. Remember the IIMs are not the end of the world, i.e., there are many other good b-schools that you could target if you could even score in the range of 85%le or more.

ishan : Sir my percentile in past 3 tests has been 92,89,86 . My consistency QA section has been a worry. At this last junction please suggest what can i do to improve my performance..
prakashrajput : 1. Do not judge yourself on the basis of a few AICATs. 2. Write a few mocks to get in the groove. 3. Identify your weak areas and work on them. 4. while applying to colleges, look for both types (above and below your normal percentile range) over and above the expected score level colleges.

idu : SIR, in aimcat1314 sec 2,in question no 11 they sit 8 pipes are fitted in circular manner.they said b is adjacent to d in clockwise direction.but what is the difference,both of them will be adjacent even if u consider clockwise or anti clock wise.plz tell me how it will diff ---if a person is adjacent to other in clockwise or anti clockwise
sunil : In a circular table/arrangement, clockwise adjacent would mean to the left of, while anti-clockwise adjacent would mean to the right of. That is if B is adjacent to D in clockwise direction, then B is to the immediate left of D. You simply need to imagine the hands of a clock in the circle drawn to get an idea as to which direction is clockwise and which is anti-clockwise. For people, since they face towards the centre of the table, we use left/right instead, but they are interchangeable with clockwise and anti-clockwise.

varuniitr : size of the RC's in AIMCATS had been epic throughout the season...can we expect the same in CAT also? If yes, how to manage the time during the exam?
ramchandran : Extremely difficult to hazard a guess

sunil : You could identify problem areas in verbal and RC and then compile a collection of such questions and work on them one area at a time. Spend about a day on each problem area/question type and put in quality effort rather than quantity. Get back to any senior faculty for guidance on tough areas.

ravi : dear sir i got AIR :1000 around (90%ile) claaring both sectional cut-offs........is there any hope for me ?.........as i m worried regarding cat......i m consistently in between 85 to 95 %ile zone......Most of the times clearing cutt-offs.
ramnath : Ravi, there is still time for you to prepare. And, you are currently at a healthy level. With serious prep in the remaining time, you stand a very good chance. All the best.

asim : Its not advisable to take 2 mocks daily, please remember taking mocks without proper work later on is a sheer waste of time.

ummu : thank u asim sir.if that the case then can u tell me when will be the registration for tancet and icet.
asim : Usually it is announced in first quarter of year, though there is a chance that both may shift to CMAT this year, wait for a formal announcement in this regard.

cat12 : good evening sirs...i've achieved 70-97 percentile throughout this aimcat series....my scores dip whenever i lose confidence (which seems to depend on the very first question of the test)..pls help me to break this barrier
prakashrajput : Solve the paper in rounds. Finish off the first round in 40 mins picking the easier questions, then a second and a third. Try solving a question in your head before you jump in and if it seems to take time (even if you cansolve it) leave it for a later round.

vishnuanandh : sir 1 more question, my percentile dropped to 75 from 85 ,in aimcat 1303...n i came to kno that most of my friends also had the same recoil. y did this happen?
ramchandran : It could have been as a result of inadequate judgement. Please analyze your AIMCAT to know the actual reason

catfreak : sir what is d approx time one can take for DI questions ?
sunil : it can range from 30 seconds to 3 min per Q or more. It all depends on how you are managing the overall time in the section. For instance, you have identified about 24 doable questions and decided to leave out 6 for the very last (or completely out), then you have about 2.5 minutes or more on an average for each question - some of which you can cover in a minute and some maybe even 3 or 4 minutes. The overall time management is important. Just ensure that you do not leave any question completely unread.

bell_the_kitten : sir, if one slot is difficult n d other slot has easier questions, will the prometric regard the difficulty level as same or they will do something to give more marks to the student appearing for the difficult slot?
ramchandran : They take care of the variation in the difficulty levels

prince : One more ques. W.r.t Sentence Corrections, What should we do when there is a word to be added at the end of a sentence then the same word is to be added at the start of the next sentence, if these are the only corrections to be made in those sentences, which one should we choose as the correct sentence and why?
deepak : You will not have such ambiguous questions in cat

keyiim : with 85-90% in aimcat will i not be able to get through iit B?

asim : Join on the top ones, most of them will have batches in June only.

prakashrajput : You need to look closely at the second section. Are you getting nervous, over-exerting yourself, taking the section too lightly or just out of practice. The answer depends on the reason.

anks : sir i have applied for mdi giving first prefence to HR programme.my 10th,12th % are 92 each and m persuing my graduation(bsc)(last year) and have got 62% so far.in aimcats i score b/w 80-90 and 2-3 times i have scored in 70s as well.do i have a chnce to of gettng a call from the institute??
prakashrajput : Besides your background, the score n CAT will be important. We can expect a 95+ percetile judging by your AIMCAT scores. So ya, you have a reasonable chance. If you are interested in HRM, you may also consider applying to XLRI, TISS and SCMHRD.

prakashrajput : Too early to say. You need to write at least 5 mocks and look at the trend to say anything about the expected score in the actual exam.

prakashrajput : In the online version, it is not easy to go through the entire paper before attempting as it may take a lot of time. Go in rounds. In your first round, just solve the questions that will take very little time. Leave the more complicated ones for the latter rounds. The time per RC depends on the length, complexity etc of the set and your reading speed. You must understand the set before you may attempt the questions.

vishnuanandh : sir i would like to kno whether time is preparing any aimcat like test series(invigilated) for other major xams like xat snap etc..
prakashrajput : You will have the OMETs as both invigilated and take home tests. The schedule is available both on the website and the centre.

asim : Except for the Section on “Issues of Social concern” and part of Reasoning Section, all the other sections of IRMA get well covered with a good Preparation for CAT. In fact, most of the questions appearing in the Quantitative Aptitude part are similar to the kind of questions you find in the T.I.M.E.'s basic study material. The Reasoning part of IRMA's question paper is quite similar to the kind of questions that appear in the Bank P.O Entrance Examination and Maharashtra CET. You need to prepare for topics like input/output, strengthening & weakening an argument, number and letter series, number and letter analogies, courses of action, ability to identify a statement to be definitely true /false or probably true/false, etc. For section on “Issues of Social concern”, in addition to reading newspapers regularly, it would be advisable for a student to prepare from the following sources: MBA Education and Career magazine Manorama & CSR Year Book - it helps in preparation for stock type questions Yojana Magazine Kurukshetra Magazine Pratiyogita Darpan-Indian Economy While preparing for this section, a student should focus on issues related to environment, health, culture, food and agriculture, gender equality, social issues pertaining to development, etc. Finally, OMET for IRMA question papers are perhaps the best source for preparation. It comes very close to the actual IRMA entrance exam paper and one should give maximum importance to these question papers.

ad : Good Evening Sir, With regard to AIMCAT 03, Could you please clarify something for me in Q 16 (Section I) ? It gives the ratio of milk and water in both the containers and their overall volumes. ramnath : rupesh...in VA you have to look at the type of questions where you are going wrong. Questions selection is not much of a factor here. If you have been able to spot a trend on the type of errors, then you needs to work on those specific areas, and check the result after another mock.

ramchandran : What you are doing is okay. Only, please exercise slightly better judgement while finally choosing the answer.

At the max I can attempt only 10 questions i.e two passages due to which I always score average.Do you think the time provided for the passages in the OST is justified?. ramnath : The time is changed to 30 minutes. That was a technical error there.

excuse_me_but : Sir, I am planning to dedicate this last month to reducing my mistakes....In QA i get 1 in 3 questions wrong. Among the wrong ones, 1 in 3 are calculation mistakes, 1 in 3 are question reading/interpretation mistake, rest are things i dont understand or something i've missed. How do i arrest these mistakes? I'm sure i have a fighting chance if i do this right. Please Help!!!
prakashrajput : 1. be more cautious with the calculations. :) 2. Read carefully. :) It is important to stay focused while writing a mock. Try writing more mocks and get a hang of the topics that you tend to make a mistake in so that you can be more cautions the next time around.

boika : sir i am not able to concentrate on these RCs as a result i can only do 2 RCs.... i think that the length of these RCs is too long and a bit tough esp. in 1303 ... what can i except the RCs lengths in The REAL CAT EXAM .... and how many of them r doable ....???
ramchandran : Difficult to forecast the level of difficulty in CAT. Do only 2 if that is the maximum possible. Keep practising. Without your noticing, it might inch to 3

prakashrajput : Dont over stress yourself but work as much as you can. Complete the mocks, previous year papers, and remaining topics from the study material (if any). Getting past a 95 depends how you handle the next 18 days and how you do in the exam. All the best.
