asim : Do not try to draw these kind of conclusions, instead try to maximize number of attempts without compromising on the accuracy. Revise all the concepts learnt, analyze AIMCATs(esp the ones where you did not do well) and work on the areas/chapters that have been troubling you. Best wishes.

prakashrajput : 5. Your performance in actual CAT will invariably be at least 5-10 percentile points better than your AIMCAT performance. For example with an AIMCAT performance in the range of 60 percentile you can expect to score around 85 percentile in the exam, for a 70, you would expect 90, for an 80, around 95 and anything above 90 is good for a 95+ percentile in the real test. If you identify the easier questions and do not get stuck anywhere you can expect a percentile several notches above your best ever AIMCAT percentile. The key is to stay calm, stay focussed.

prakashrajput : Hi, The AIMCATs are designed keeping a lot of things in mind such as coverage of all the topics, the various types of questions, the various arrangements in which the paper can come etc. But be assured, AIMCATs are the closest approximation of CAT. There is no news whatsoever of CAT being scheduled to be tougher than usual. Besides, its a competetive exam and its only your relative performance that is important. So, breathe easy.

charlton : logical conclusion will usually be venn diagram based. For logical consistency, you will have "If", "When", "Whenever", "Unless" in the sentences.

prakashrajput : Write a couple of mocks knowing that you are not being judged for your performance. Make a mental note to make sure you dont miss out on any easy question. Do not solve the paper in a single iteration. Go in rounds. Pick the easier ones first.

viveknair : Typically, you should not keep RC and DI passages towards the end. The time pressure can force you to quickly attempt wrongly towards the end. Anywhere else is fine. See what has worked for you in the AIMCATs

charlton : Yes, this was a difficult R.C. passage. One must leave it for last. But if you have time, you may certainly do the passage. Q.29 was easy though. You need to select the passage and the questions well.

mj : sir, MC 1303, Mc1304, AIMCAT1306, AIMCAT 1304, AIMCAT 1303(taken in the same order in 2 weeks) %iles are 95%ile, 97%ile, 95%ile, 75%ile, 60%ile in that order. Are the MCs easy relative to AIMCATs. If so can I rely on the MC performance solely and judge my preparation? Also I have been getting 70-86%ile in the previous AIMCATS. How to read these scores and what efforts to be put in the nxt 25 days...?
prakashrajput : A percentile is independent of the difficulty level of the test. It is a rank. Performance relative to other candidates who wrote the test. Regarding the next 25 days: 1. kapilverma : you don't have to bother much about the no. of people writing aimcat's as the broad sample remains the same. some bright and some not-so-bright people always take aimcat's.

viveknair : One off day should not worry you too much. In the last few days, spend at least half the time every day on revising the topics. This will help soothe your nerves as you are continually reminded of all the topics that you have covered and are good at. Also, Skimming the paper before starting can again help soothe your nerves. Otherwise, a few tough questions at the start of the paper could unsettle you. Once you know what the entire paper contains, then the surprises are all over in the first 5 to 10 mins. Remaining time can be utilized more effectively.

vamseedhar : I am not able to get the ideas while I am solving the paper while writing exam. But I get the ideas while I solve it after the exam. What may be the reason?
kapilverma : The key to doing well in any such aptitude test is to stay cool and have a composed mindset. So, try that please. Secondly, things will click faster/ ideas will come sooner when we practice more on such topics/ areas. all the best!

asim : You must first of all analyze the kind of questions that have been troubling you in LR and work on such questions from the basic study material and the handouts, moreover have a cutoff time limit for individual question beyond which you must not invest any more time, book mark the question and try it at the end(during buffer time)

rahul : sir in this aimcat my score in quant was very poor with 14 correct and 8 wrong (my worst accuracy in all the aimcats so far) and in verbal it was 17/7. so i am happy with a score of 44 in verbal (95.5%ile), but plz suggest what to do in quant, i believe that is my strong point and such a performance is unacceptable.i have 12 days for cat.
viveknair : If your performances in quant so far have been good, nothing to worry. Dont let that one off day unsettle you too much. For Quant, analyse your AIMCAT scores. Which are the topics that you dont answer (not enough confidence in those topics), those that u answer and get wrong (misplaced confidence – not enough clarity, silly mistakes) , answer correctly but take too much time (less knowledge of shortcuts, option substitution , elimination methods not tried out), answer correctly and fast (thorough knowledge – some practise every now and then is sufficient) Many a times, we make the same mistake over and over again. Here, learning from one's mistakes is very important. Also, just realizing that you are prone to make silly mistakes in some areas makes you careful when attempting such questions the next time. In the last few days, make sure you spend at least half the time every day on revision.

charlton : Whenever and if are the same. If X happens then Y happens or if Y has not happened, then X will not happen. Unless is different. eg. Unless u study hard, u will fail.......U study hard, u will not fail

hello : sirs, what percentile (overall, as well as sectionals) in CAT should be good enough for IIM ABC calls? I have been getting 98-99 percentiles in AIMCATs consistently.

federer : On my SHP, in the MC and CRT section, i have 10 MCs and 5 CRTs whereas in the MC and CRT cutoff section, there are 15 MCs and 10 CRTs. I am enrolled for the AIMCAT enhanced package.

mba : Sir i am very good in VA and QA but my scores suffer due to poor LR and DI . How to improve?
ramasamy : For DI, first step is speed maths and percentages. Do the basic handouts once again and for LR and DI, look at the sub-areas where you are strong and try to answer questions in those areas (like calculation based DI, reasoning based DI, Puzzles, Venn Diagrams etc)from past papers.

sudheer : hi asim sir, in the verbal section i could answer 16 questions with 60 per accuracy. in every aimcat, there will be 4 to 5 qns which i can get them correct, but due to minor mistakes i end up attempting work.. if i can get those 4 to 5 qns right, then i surely can clear the cut offs.. please suggest me the best possible to overcome those minor mistakes.
charlton : Aim for 90% attempts with 90% accuracy. or atleast 85% attempts with 85% accuracy.

prakashrajput : With the lady luck on your side, you should be good for a 98+. :) Focus on the paper, do not get excited, do not commit silly mistakes, do not get stuck on any question. Should be good. All the best.

prakashrajput : Take a break between the sections. Start the second section with VA (spelling/vocab questions) or with LR. Get into the complicated questions only once you are in control. Focus on the paper. Solve it in iterations.

charlton : Ok. I hope you understood "If X then Y" For Unless, if it appears difficult; change it to the if form as follows: eg. Unless u study hard, u will fail Q) If you do not study hard, u will fail. Ans.1) U did not study hard. U failed Ans.2) U did not fail. U studied hard.

shahana : I would suggest that since you are relatively stronger in LR, start with LR. A good score in LR will also boost your morale. Then go for RC. No need to try and solve all RC questions; select carefully. Then go for the rest of the questions if you have time.

asim : Cannot be predicted as it depends on the difficulty level of your slot. Remember IIMs carry out normalization of raw scores.

kapilverma : no, it is about finding overall profit %age for which you have to take 100 as the base. also note that 90 has been substracted, while calculating amount at the end of all transactions.

viveknair : Speed comes with more practise and revision. Analyze your AIMCATs and see which type of questions are you repeatedly making mistakes in. Being careful in those areas where you are prone to make mistakes alone is sometimes enough to significantly boost your accuracy. For getting more variety of DI questions, take any normal DI set and make 3 more questions on your own. For instance, for tournaments, if top 3 teams qualify to the next stage, Answer the entire set assuming that only top 2 qualify. This will build your confidence a good deal as you will feel you can now answer any question of this type.

The time to experiment with approaches regarding approaching the paper is over. Have a plan and practice it in your head. 1. Write a couple of mocks to stabilize the plan. 2. While writing a paper, go in iterations. Solve the easy questions before getting into the tougher ones. Know your topics of comfort. 3. Do not get stuck on any question. All questions carry equal marks. You can always come back to a question later. 3. Do not go with a fixed number of attempts in mind. It will only distract you. Do not worry about what kind of paper others may have got. If the paper is tough, its going to be tough for every one and similarly if the paper is easy, it will be easy for everyone. 4. Follow the instructions from Prometric regarding reaching the centre and the entry/verification process. 5. DO NOT GO WITH A PREPLAN TO LEAVE ANY AREA. (Quant/DI/LR/RC/VA etc)

shahana : You are facing normal exam anxiety. One way to overcome it is to ensure that even during home practice, you set strict time limits on yourself and solve questions in exam mode without breaks or disturbance. Take frequent home tests.

charlton : They are quite comparable. The aimcat percentile ranges are mentioned (with the actual CAT percentile) in brackets. eg. Less than 60 (less than 60); 60 to 70 (Around 70); 70 to 80 (80 to 85); 80 to 85 (Around 90); 85 to 90 (90 to 95); 90 to 95 (95+); 95 (Around 99 in CAT)

kimahs : The LR in 1301 was very tough according to me. Though I got a sectional %ile of 97% in VA, do you think this is the actual LR level in CAT?

shahana : well is it working for you in AIMCATs? It's a reasonable strategy, but keep in mind that CAT can throw surprises so you cannot bank on the same distribution of questions. Which means, it's best to prepare vocab as well

prakashrajput : 1. Ensure that you have covered all topics in quant. You never know which topic the easy questions could be from. 2. Write 2 mocks per day with intensive analysis to figure out loopholes in your preparation and tend to them while we still have time. Analysis is the key. 3. Solve previous year papers of CAT. Go topicwise and areaswise. 4. Prepare notes on the topics/issues that bother you and make sure that you have attended to them to your satisfaction. Feeling good is the key. :) 5. Keep in touch with your faculty for any insider information or last minute tricks. It helps.

kapilverma : why some people don't get calls is - believe me - very difficult to find out! your overall as well as va percentiles are quite good!! don't worry too much regarding that. i think you can solve/revise aimcats regularly. but taking mocks daily may not be a good idea - remember, you also need to analyse and then, study.

viveknair : Keeping the last 10 days for revision is fine. The online tests are a great way to understand how you behave when under pressure. Are you attempting without being sure? Or are you not attempting at all? Find out what you are doing. Be aware of the choices you are making then. You shall then understand what pressure does to you and slowly you can stop yourself from making the mistakes that you used to earlier.

saket : sir my accuracy in verbal is atmost 75%. i attempt on an average 25 questions and get a score around 45(+-2) consistently. but now i want to increase my accuracy to 85+ as that will significantly boost my score. how should i go about achieving this?
prakashrajput : Form rules for each question type. Solve a few papers and fine tune the rules.

viveknair : First of all, Great job so far, keep it up! We tend to make silly mistakes because we are rushing to the answer and are too confident about some topics to not recheck. Again find the topics where you are more prone to make such mistakes and try and avoid to make such follies.

ramasamy : Accuracy is taken care by giving negative marks. For example attempting 30 and getting 15 right will get 30 marks (15*3 - 15*1) and attempting 15 and getting 15 right will get 45 marks(15*3-0).

ramasamy : It is a normal case of nerves.It happens to all of us. Do attempt your CAT. Ensure the remaining time is well utilised

viveknair : Definitely, you stand a good chance of getting into IIMs. Also, if you are able to answer more, given some 10 mins extra, that means your basics are good as well. Some bit of Speed Maths can definitely quicken your speed. By analyzing AIMCATs, you can sometimes see that some answers are reached through some clever elimination, option substitution, etc. That skill can help you shave off crucial minutes. Develop that skill and keep looking for such opportunities.

nikita : @ raviprakash sir thank you sir.... solving the paper under time pressure is very difficult, and however hard i try to overcome it it's becoming more difficult to cope up with..my post aimcat timed test reflects better performance...what should i do? n last year the marking scheme of CAT was different, i mean it wasn't just +3 n -1..d marks were out of 450 n not 180 as generally are..what actually is it?
raviprakash : aaah .. no problem its a just a standard way to analyze =3 and -1 .... u need to give 2 mock acats daily in last 15 dayz
