JMI was founded
at Aligarh in 1920 during the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation movement on the behest
of Gandhiji’s call to boycott government supported educational institutions. The
institution was relocated to Delhi in 1925 and went on to become a Central University
in 1988 by an act of Indian Parliament vide Jamia Millia Islamia ACT 1988 (No. 59
            of 1988).
