The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering
College, Durgapur), was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of
the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering
education in the country and to foster national integration.It is a
fully-funded premier Technological Institution of the Government of India and
is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors.

Facilities
Library
The Institute has a well established Central Library which caters to the need
of the undergraduate and post graduate students, research scholars and the
faculty. The Institute Library has a collection of about 90000 books and 10000
bound volumes of journals. It subscribes to about 100 international journals in
various disciplines of science, engineering and humanities, published from
India.
Central instrument facilities
The Institute has developed a Central Instruments Facility, for use by the UG
& PG students, research scholars and faculty, for students' training,
research work and testing and consultancy. The CIF houses state-of-art
instruments like Scanning Electron Microscope with EDS, X-Ray Diffractometer,
Nd:YAg Laser unit etc.
Recreation
The Institute has a playground (Oval). There are courts for Volley-ball
and Basket-ball. Besides the indoor game facilities available in the student's
hostels, there is a Multi-Activity Centre, housed in which are an Indoor
Auditorium and a Gymnasium with latest equipments.
