National Institute of Technology, Nagpur (VNIT) was established in 1960 as a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Maharashtra.It is named after the great Engineer, Visionary and Statesman, Sir. M Visvesvaraya

Other than imparting professional education at under graduate and postgraduate levels, the institute has been extending available expertise to various Govt. / Semi- Govt. and primary objective of institute is to provide advanced technological skills & expertise to enhance teaching & academic activities. Greater emphasis is also being placed on revenue generation through utilisation of facilities for providing services to the industries on commercial basis.

VNIT has a beautiful green campus of about 214 acres near Ambazari Dam. All departments & laboratories are housed on the campus. Hostels accommodating about 1000 students, including 200 girl students, as well as residential accommodation for teaching & non-teaching staff of the college are available on the campus.

The institute offers under graduate programs in nine disciplines with a total student intake of 480 students

The institute also offers M.Tech programs in six disciplines viz Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Applied Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Material Engineering. It also runs distance education programs for Working Professionals, Teachers, PG students & Senior UG students of Engineering or M. Sc./ M.C.A. in collaboration with Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology ( KReSIT) & Center for Distance Engineering Education Program (C-DEEP) of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT B), Powai, Mumbai using Live & Interactive Videoconference over satellite communication System.

Facilities

Library
The institute has 1600 sq.mt independent library block . It is an automated library and uses LIBSYS. It has sections like Circulation, reference, Social welfare Book bank, Student’s aid Fund Book Bank, Acquisition, Processing and Binding, and Reprography

Industry Interaction cell
The primary role of industry institute interaction cell is to promote and develop close interaction with the industrial sector and to play a positive role in its growth. The cell’s activities are aimed at more effectively utilizing the manpower and other resources available at the Institute, with the assistance of participating industries, for satisfying the techno-industrial needs of the industries in this region in particular and improving the quality of professional training of VNIT students in general.
