A student interviewed by a national television at 12:15 pm after getting out of the premises of examination appealing to the IITs to make Mathematics more simpler and doable, A harried parent literally handholding his son - a taller, heavier built individual than himself - to the gates of the examination centre because he could not sleep well due to the anxiety, A four-wheeler almost causing an accident while screeching to a halt with lights flashing in front of the gates to the entrance of the venue because they were late by 5 minutes of the start of the first paper __.

These were but some of the several amusing scenes outside some of the venues of the IIT-JEE examination conducted in over 1000 centres across India. More than 4.5 lakhs students appeared for the second largest engineering entrance examination in India, after the AIEEE. And all of these students would again descend on examination venues two weeks for the above-mentioned examination for ensuring that they create a back-up of sorts in case they did not perform at par in IIT-JEE.

"Isn't 6 hours overkill?"

"What's there to test for 6 hours"?

"How much preparation would these students have gone through for this?"

The media waiting outside had these posers to the parents. Well, 6 hours is not overkill for a testing phase for entry into some of the best known Engineering Institutes in India. There's a lot to test and 6 hours just test the juice of the preparation-nectar of over 2 year's struggle by the students. And, is it worth it? - The increasing number of students who appear for the IIT-JEE over the years only answers the above question in the double affirmative.

This year, the IIT-JEE question papers were offered in ten different versions - 0 to 9. All contestants would essentially have the same questions, but the order of questions was jumbled in the ten versions. Also the answer choices for the questions were also jumbled to ensure that there would be no benefit for somebody trying to peep into the neighbor's sheets.

Paper 1 was conducted from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. There were 28 questions each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each question carried 3 marks. Two sections - Single Correct MCQ and Comprehension carried negative mark for incorrect responses (+3 and -1). The remaining two sections - Multiple Correct Answer Type and Integer Type did not carry negative marks (+3 and -0). Thus the total marks in Paper 1 were 252.

Paper 2 was conducted from 02:00 pm to 05:00 pm. Each of the subjects hosted 19 questions and the total marks were 237. The Single Correct MCQ carried a reward of 5 marks for the correct answer and a penalty of minus 2 for a wrong response. The integer type questions did not carry negative marks (+3, -0). The Comprehension type questions attracted negative marks as in Paper 1 (+3, -1). The two Matrix Match questions had four rows each to be matched with four other rows. Each correct marking of a Row would reward the student with 2 points. There was no negative marking in this section.
