e-Governance Services India Ties up With IIT-Kanpur To Upscale Unnat Bharat Abhiyan

  • Common Service Centre’s (CSC) e-Governance Services India Limited, a special purpose vehicle under the Ministry of Electronics & IT, has tied up with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kanpur to upscale ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’. ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’ is an initiative of the Ministry of HRD.
  • It aims to find solutions to accelerate sustainable growth in rural India. Under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT-Kanpur has brought together 15 leading higher education institutions from Uttar Pradesh. These institutions have agreed to work with CSC for the development of villages under the scheme.

Gates Foundation Appoints Sanjay Ubale As India Policy Head

  • The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has hired Sanjay Ubale, head of the infrastructure and urban solutions at Tata Sons, as its policy director for India.
  • Sanjay will oversee the Seattle-based charity’s healthcare, poverty alleviation, and educational activities in the country. Ubale, who has spent over a decade at Tata Group, was previously the CEO of Tata Realty & Infrastructure.

Gujarat: shops, businesses can remain open 24X7

  • Shops and other businesses in Gujarat can remain open round the clock now with the Gujarat Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2019.
  • Commercial establishments in municipal corporations limits, or those near National Highways, railway stations, State transport depots, hospitals and petrol pumps will be allowed to operate 24 hours.

HUL appoints Razdan, Sanzgiri as EDs

  • Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has announced the appointments of Anuradha Razdan as executive director, Human Resources, and Vibhav Sanzgiri as executive director, Research and Development.
  • Both Ms. Razdan and Dr. Sanzgiri will join HUL’s management committee with effect from June 1.

ICRA downgrades Yes Bank’s long-term rating with negative outlook

  • Rating agency ICRA has downgraded the long-term rating of private sector lender Yes Bank with negative outlook after the lender reported significant increase in below investment grade advances, which could impact the bank’s profitability in the coming quarters.

IIT Delhi 3D prints human skin

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have successfully 3D bioprinted human skin models that have certain anatomically relevant structural, mechanical and biochemical features similar to native human skin. The bioprinted skin produced in the lab by the team is already being used by ITC Ltd for experiments.
  • The bioprinted skin model will have wide applications in testing cosmetics. It can also reduce and probably even replace testing on animals.
  • It can also be used for testing dermatology drugs on human skin and at a future date even help in testing drugs for personalised medicine.

India To Purchase 10 Kamov-31 Choppers From Russia For INR 3,600 cr

  • Defence ministry has approved the procurement of 10 Kamov Ka-31 Airborne Early Warning and Control helicopters for the Indian Navy. The cost of the deal would be around Rs 3,600 crore and the 10 helicopters would be deployed on the aircraft carriers and warships of the Navy including the INS Vikrant and Grigorovich-class frigates.
  • The aim of the choppers is to sanitize the air space around the battle groups led by the aircraft carriers while carrying out operations in the sea or anti-submarine warfare operations.

India, Australia agree to further deepen counter-terrorism co-operation

  • India and Australia have agreed to further deepen counter-terrorism co-operation through regular exchange of information and sharing of best practices on countering extremism and radicalization.
  • The two countries held the 11th Meeting of Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism at Canberra. In a release, the External Affairs Ministry said, the two sides discussed contemporary counter terrorism challenges such as financing of terrorism, the use of the internet for terror purposes, radicalization and Foreign Terrorist Fighters.
  • Both sides welcomed the listing of Masood Azhar, leader of the Jaish-e-Mohammad, as a Global Terrorist by the UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn crowned Rama X of Thailand

  • Thailand has crowned its new King Maha Vajiralongkorn, marking the first ascension of a new monarch in seven decades.
  • King Vajiralongkorn is the tenth monarch of the Chakri dynasty, which has reigned since 1782. The last coronation was held in 1950 for the king's father Bhumibol Adulyadej.
  • Thailand has been run by an arch-royalist junta since 2014. The monarchy takes primacy in the country, but it is buttressed by the army.

  • This day show appreciation for the sacrifices, honor the accomplishments and remember the tragedies that these hardworking individuals experience.

  • International Firefighters' Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4.
  • It was instituted after a proposal was emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a bushfire in Australia.

  • Davis Cupper Sumit Nagal continued his remarkable run to reach the semifinals of the $54,160 Challenger with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over third seed Corentin Moutet of France.
  • Nagal will face second seed Paolo Lorenzi of Italy in the last four.
  • In the ITF women’s event in Antalya (Turkey), sixth seed Jennifer Luikham fought past Sapfo Sakellaridi of Greece 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-3 in a battle of wits that lasted three hours and 10 minutes. She set up a final against Indy de Vroome of the Netherlands.
  • In the doubles final, however, top seeds Jennifer and Ramu Ueda of Japan were beaten 7-5, 5-7, [10-6] by fourth seeds Vanda Lukacs and Manca Pislak.

NIOS signs MoU with Indian Medical Association for imparting skill education in Paramedical Courses

  • NIOS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Medical Association for imparting skill education in Paramedical Courses to the learners.
  • The MoU is initially for period of three years for the paramedical courses all over the country through its Accredited Vocational Institutions (AVIs).
  • In the first Phase Diploma in Medical Imaging Technology and Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology are being offered. Diploma in Operation Theatre, Cardiac Technology, Medical Record Technology and Blood Bank Technology would be offered in the next phase.
  • The diploma programmes will ensure better opportunities for the career growth of paramedics and it will also ensure better placements in various sectors of Health.

Paytm President Bhushan Patil Resigns

  • Former Alibaba executive Bhushan Patil has quit as the President of Noida-based fintech platform Paytm. He had joined the startup in 2016 to look after its cross-border commerce business.
  • Patil, an IIT Bombay alumnus, had previously served as a director for Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, leading its new Global Markets initiatives for over five years.

RIL's online marketplace to have biggest hyperlocal logistics network

  • Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries’ upcoming ‘new commerce’ platform is being linked to the biggest chain of offline retail and kirana stores in the country, which will enable it to deliver products ranging from groceries to clothing to electronics within hours.
  • With more than 10,000 stores under the various Reliance retail brands and over 2.5 million kirana stores already tying up with it, Jio’s online marketplace would have the biggest hyperlocal logistics network in the country.

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu released a postage stamp to commemorate the 750th birth anniversary of Sri Vedanta Desikan in New Delhi.
  • Born in 1268 CE, Vedanta Desikan was Sri Vaishnava philosopher and one of the most brilliant stalwarts of Sri Vaishnavism in the post-Ramanuja period. The basis of his spiritual teachings was peace and humanity.
