GATE 2020 - Analysis for TU Munich and RWTH AACHEN for Mechanical Students

What is GATE?

GATE is an online (computer based), national level examination conducted by IIT Delhi every year. Students aspiring to join IITs/IISCs or other institutions for the M.Tech or Ph.D programs must register and pass this exam. GATE 2020 will be conducted on 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th February, 2020.

The GATE scores are valid for three years both nationally and internationally.

GATE Exam is considered to the most popular postgraduate engineering entrance examination in India. However, it has now crossed borders to be considered as an international level entry exam for engineering and postgraduate courses.

A few universities in Germany like TU Munich and RWTH Aachen accept GATE scores. The medium of teaching is in English, thereby making it an attractive option for many Indian students to apply.

A few points to note are:

The minimum cut-off percentage required for admission in foreign universities is 90%.

Candidates must pass the TOEFL or IELTS exam as part of the English language proficiency requirement

Let’s now look at the two universities in Germany that offer a Master’s Degree in Engendering. They are Technical University (TU) Munich and TWTH Aachen.

Technical University (TU) Munich (https://www.tum.de/)

Eligibility: Aspiring student should have a GATE score of 90% or above. Students should also possess an Undergraduate degree in Engineering. GATE qualifiers can apply for the following courses:

  • Mechanical Engineering;
  • Civil Engineering and Surveying;
  • Electrical Engineering; and
  • Information Technology

Course Fee: Around 500 Euros per semester for TUM PG programs

Application process

Admissions for master’s program are open in two sessions. The Winter Session and the Summer Session.

Admission for Summer Session Begins in September every year
Admission for Winter Session Begins in January every year

The application forms are submitted online through the university website. Aspiring international candidates are required to follow the below steps for applying:

Create a TUMonline account and enter all the necessary information

Upload the following documents

  • Statement of Purpose detailing why you want to study at TUM and why you have shortlisted the specific program
  • Your resume
  • A 1000 words essay in either English or German on a specific topic mentioned by TUM
  • Your latest passport size photograph

You also need to provide hard copies of the following document (apart from the documents you have uploaded online)

  • Printout of your filled in application form duly signed
  • Analysis of the Curriculum form
  • Copy of your undergraduate degree certificate
  • List of courses and grades OR an official transcript of records as a notarized photocopy
  • IELTS or TOEFL certificate and German Language proficiency certificate (if required) as proof of your English and/or German language proficiency
  • GATE or GRE scores (as applicable)
  • Any other professional certificate or additional qualification certificates related to the program
  • Copy of your passport
  • Copy of your health insurance card

RWTH Aachen University (https://www.rwth-aachen.de)

Ranked 138 by the QS World University Rankings® in 2019, RWTH Aachen University is the largest university of technology in Germany. It is also one of the most renowned universities of Europe. It was also ranked 145 in the Quaquarelli Symonds University Rankings in 2015 and 2016.

Admissions for master’s program are open in two sessions.

Admission for Summer Session 1st September of each academic year
Admission for Winter Session 1st March of each academic year

  • Go the university website and browse for application form
  • Enter the necessary details and upload the necessary documents
  • Download and print the application form after online submission
  • Documents to be submitted along with the application form are:
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • CV of the candidate
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Transcription of records
  • Forward the hard copy of the application form to the international office
