Eligibility Criteria for GATE 2020 Aspirants at IIT Madras for regular research scholars
PhD in Engineering
Candidates with master’s degree in engineering or technology with a good academic record and a valid GATE score are eligible to apply.
PhD in Sciences
Master’s degree in Sciences with a good academic record and a valid GATE 2020 score is eligible for applying.
PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences
Master’s degree or dual degree or equivalent with a good academic record and a valid GATE 2020 score is eligible for applying.
PhD in Management
Master’s degree or a 2 year PG Diploma in a relevant field with good academic record and a valid GATE 2020 score is eligible for applying.
Admission Process for PhD admission at IIT Madras
- Candidates opting for admission at IIT Madras for PhD programs can apply online from their official website at www.iitm.ac.in. Candidates should check their eligibility criteria before applying.

Selection process for IIT Admissions
- Eligible candidates with the required educational qualifications and valid GATE 2020 score (scores are set by the departments from time to time), are called for a test and interview or just interview by the selection committee of the respective department.
- A departmental test would be conducted for candidates who had completed their post-graduation 10 years before applying for their PhD programs.
- Applications of international students would be considered without a test or interview.
- Reservation of seats – reservations are applicable to candidates such as SC/ST/OBC/Persons with disability (PwD) as set by the Government of India.
Provision of Financial Assistance
- Candidates who are admitted to the PhD programs under the regular scheme are eligible for HTRA. They are required to work 8 hours per week in the respective departments to earn this benefit.
- Students enrolled in PhD programs with B.E./B.Tech/M.Sc or equivalent qualification with a valid GATE 2020 score would be eligible for ₹25,000 per month for the first 2 years.

Admission Process for PhD admission at IIT Bombay
Candidates who clear the interview (which is held a month before the commencement of semester) are offered admission.
The management or responsible department may choose to give a written test rather than an oral interview should the necessity arise. However, written test and oral interview does not guarantee admission.
Only SC/ST and PwD category candidates who are called for the written test or oral interview under Teaching Assistantship (TA) category are provided a paid single second class railway ticket to return back to their houses by the shortest route from the institution.
Application Procedure
All candidates are required to submit your application online. Application forms would not be available for download. Candidates are requested to take a print out of the filled in/submitted form for record purposes.
