JEE Advanced 2016 was conducted on 22nd May 2016. Slightly over 200000 students were qualified to appear for the exam. Paper 1 was conducted in the morning 9.00 to 12.00 hours and Paper 2 was conducted in the afternoon 14.00 to 17.00 hours. There were 10 versions of the exam paper.
Paper 1The order of topics has remained to be the same over the past three years-Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In difference to previous years, the options were jumbled across versions for 1 question in Chemistry and 4 questions in Physics in this paper. The paper as a whole was difficult as per students.
The question pattern was, of course, different from any of the previous years. There were 18 x 3 = 54 questions altogether and the total marks were 62 x 3 = 186. The question pattern is as shown below:
Type of question | No. Of questions | Negative marking | Total marks |
---|---|---|---|
Single Correct option type | 5 | -1 | 15 |
One or more correct multiple option(s) type* | 8 | -2 | 32 |
Single digit integer type | 5 | 0 | 15 |
* One or more correct option(s) type questions awarded partial marks, i.e. for darkening a bubble corresponding to each correct option, provided NO incorrect option is darkened, 1 mark will be awarded.
PhysicsIn the Physics part, representation from Class XI areas is relatively less and Modern Physics secured high importance. Questions were lengthy in nature and to solve these problems students requires not just concepts of Physics but a solid understanding of applying mathematical tools also. Therefore majority of students would find the paper to be above average/ difficult.
The difficulty level of the paper and the topic wise segregation are depicted below:
Chemistry
In general the difficulty level of the questions may be classified as medium. Among the 18 questions, 8 are from the Physical Chemistry section, thus showing a huge representation of the topic.
All the questions from the organic areas are of the normally expected type and would take only a little time for the students to arrive at the answers. But there could be ambiguity in some questions. But the brilliance of the students is really put to test in answering the Physical chemistry part. Especially one question from this section appears to be out of normal range of topics even for a seriously studious student.
The difficulty level of the paper and the topic wise segregation are depicted below:
Mathematics
The Mathematics part of the paper posed difficulties due to the lengthy questions. Questions from Coordinate Geometry and one question from Integral especially posed challenge. The paper was considered as a difficult paper. One can say that Coordinate geometry once again ruled over the JEE Advanced paper, not by the number of questions but by the difficulty they posed.
The difficulty level of the paper and the topic wise segregation are depicted below:
The order of topics has remained as-Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Again, the options were jumbled across versions for 10 questions in Physics in this paper. The paper as a whole was difficult as per students.
The question pattern: there were 18 x 3 = 54 questions altogether and the total marks were 62 x 3 = 186. The question pattern was different from Paper 1 and is as shown below:
Type of question | No. Of questions | Negative marking | Total marks |
---|---|---|---|
Single Correct option type | 6 | -1 | 18 |
One or more correct multiple option(s) type* | 8 | -2 | 32 |
comprehension type | 4 | 0 | 12 |
* One or more correct option(s) type questions awarded partial marks, i.e. for darkening a bubble corresponding to each correct option, provided NO incorrect option is darkened, 1 mark will be awarded.
PhysicsSecond paper was more demanding than the first paper. The distribution of question across major areas was not uniform and the questions were lengthy. The questions required multiple ideas to connect which the students required more time.
There were no questions from Properties of Matter in this paper.
The difficulty level of the paper and the topic wise segregation are depicted below:
Chemistry
The level of paper 2 Chemistry was tougher than paper 1. All 5 questions from the Inorganic portions were easy to answer-they were textual and tested only the memory of the students.
But among the 6 questions from the Physical portions only 2 were easy; 2 were of medium difficulty level and 2 were difficult. These questions involved application of principles studied.
Out of 7 questions from the Organic portions, many would require more time to solve and some required logical reasoning to get to the answer.
Yet overall the students were not much stressed or having anxiety.
The difficulty level of the paper and the topic wise segregation are depicted below:
Mathematics
As expected the Mathematics portion in paper 2 was harder than paper 1. (it was the same case last year too). Questions from differential calculus were tough, lengthy and demanding more time and clarity of concepts. Both sets of paragraph based questions (one from Probability theory and the other from Coordinate geometry) required more time to get to the idea.
Overall, students would have felt slightly depressed after paper 2 Mathematics.
The difficulty level of the paper and the topic wise segregation are depicted below:
