Physical therapists are health care professionals who restore mobility, alleviate pain and suffering and work to prevent permanent disability in patients. Physical therapists test and measure neurological, pulmonary, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems and treat problems related to these body systems which could be due to illness, injury or congenital disorders. The job of a physical therapist is preventive, restorative and rehabilitative. Medical practitioners refer cases to physiotherapists for the treatment of muscular aberrations, cerebral palsy, joint and bone injuries, chest and heart diseases etc. They work with many types of patients of all ages.
Specialisations:
Specialisation in Physical therapy are
in cardiopulmonary, clinical electrophysiologic, neurologic, pediatric,
geriatric and sports physical therapy. In a physiotherapy course subjects to be
studied are anatomy, physiology, Orthopaedics, Neurology, Medicine ,Surgery
etc.Practical training in a hospital ward or department is also included as a
part of the course.
Work Environment:
The work goes on in a clinical setting. Most of the work is carried out indoors
though patients are also given therapy trial run out of doors. These
paramedical professionals may work in small clinics, large multi speciality
hospitals , rehabilitation centres, Government establishments, health centres,
and hospitals of industrial centres.
Eligibility
The course can be pursued after class12th with Physics, Chemistry, Maths /
Biology and English.
Course Duration:
The diploma course is of 2 year duration and degree is 4 ½ years
duration. There is a 6 month practical internship in all these courses.
