NURSING EDUCATION


The largest group of workers in the health sector is those in the nursing occupations- Nursing and Nursing assistants. The job of a nurse incorporates an extensive range of responsibilities related to the care of those who are sick and educating those who are well. The profession of nursing requires service with dedication, love, tender care of physically incapacitated, sick, newborn, injured, convalescing mothers, old persons and at times mentally deranged. Most professional nurses serve as general duty nurses. Their training and education imparts knowledge and skills to work in hospitals, nursing homes, sanitoriums, schools, industry and private medical clinics. Nursing education is regulated in India by The Indian Nursing Council (INC) an Autonomous Body under the Government of India; Ministry of Health & Family Welfare was constituted by the Central Government.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AS PER INC NORMS

A.N.M.  

  1.  Age limit 15 to 35 years on or before 31st Dec. of the year of admission.
  2. The minimum educational requirements shall be the passing of: Secondary school certificate Examination (10 years course), 10th class or central board secondary education or a recognized equivalent public examination.  Subjects of study must be equivalent to those prescribed by the CBSE for the class X with minimum 45 %.
G.N.M.

  1. Age for admission will be between 17 and 35 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission.
  2. Minimum education:
    1. 10+2 class passed or its equivalent preferably with Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) subjects with aggregate of 45% marks.
    2. Those who have cleared 10+2 vocational ANM course (revised after 2001) from the school recognized by Indian Nursing Council.
    3.   ANM training i.e. 10+1 ½ years training should also have passed +2 or its equivalent examination.  
  3. In addition to the above, admission procedure can be laid down by concerned State Nursing Council/Nursing Examination Boards
 Basic B.Sc. (Nursing)

  1. The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st Dec. of the year of admission.
  2. The minimum educational requirements:-HSE/SSC/10+2/PUC or equivalent with 12 years schooling from a recognized board or university with Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and English with minimum of 50% aggregate marks (PCBE).
Entrance/Selection test

Selection of the candidates should be based on the merit of the entrance examination held by University or competent authority.

Post Basic B.Sc. (Nursing)

To be eligible for admission to this course, a candidate shall have:

  1. Passed the Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary or Intermediate or 10+2 or an equivalent examination recognised by the university for this purpose.  
  2. Obtained a certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery and registered as R.N.R.M. with the State Nurses Registration Council. A male nurse, trained before the implementation of the new integrated course besides being registered as a nurse with State Nurses Registration Council, shall produce evidence of training approved by Indian Nursing Council for a similar duration in lieu of midwifery in any one of the following areas:
    • O.T. Techniques
    • Ophthalmic Nursing
    • Leprosy Nursing
    • TB Nursing
    • Psychiatric Nursing
    • Neurological and Neuro surgical Nursing
    • Community Health Nursing
    • Cancer Nursing
    • Orthopedic Nursing
M. Sc. Nursing

  1. The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered midwife or equivalent with any State Nursing Registration Council.
  2. The minimum education requirements shall be the passing of:B.Sc. Nursing/B.Sc. Hons. Nursing/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing with minimum of 55% aggregate marks.
  3. The candidate should have undergone in B.Sc. Nursing/B.Sc. (H) Nursing/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing in an institution which is recognized by Indian Nursing Council.
  4. Minimum one year of work experience after Basic B. Sc. Nursing.
  5. Minimum one year of work experience prior or after P. B. B.Sc. Nursing.
  6. 5% relaxation of marks for SC/ST candidates may be given.
Entrance/Selection test

Selection of the candidates should be based on the merit of the entrance examination held by University or competent authority.

Ph.D in Nursing

  1. M.Phil / M.Sc (Nursing) or a Post Graduate degree in nursing recognized by INC
  2. The candidates should have passed M.Sc Nursing with a minimum of 60% marks
Nature of work

The job of a nurse is to give bedside care to convalescing patients. They assist physicians during examination and operation of patients. The profession demands 8 to 10 hours of work each day.A General nurse has to record temperature , pulse rate, administer medication orally and hypodermically,change dressings,assist patients in personal care, prepare patients for surgery and all other duties which incorporate skill and understanding of patient’s needs.

Work Environment

Nurses work in a variety of settings ranging from rural outpatient clinics, government as well as in private hospitals, nursing homes, Defense service etc. The work requires close contact with patients suffering from variety of illnesses.

Eligibility

  • Females, who are unmarried, divorced, legally separated and widows without encumbrances can apply.
  • Applicants should be between 17 and 24 years of age and should have completed plus two or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology with minimum 45 percent marks and be medically fit.
Selection

The selection is based on an objective type written examination comprising of general English, biology and General intelligence followed by an interview of successful candidates in the written examination.

Terms & Conditions

Those selected to the course have to execute a bond to serve in the Military Nursing Services (MNS) for five / four years respectively.
