Chat on preparation tips for VA & RC !
(Chat Transcript)

ankit : HOW IS IIM NAGPUR? WITH MENTOR IIM A IS IT BETTER THAN IIM RAIPUR, KASHIPUR, UDAIPUR...?
asim : Too early to take a call on it, right now with proven track record the other three seem more attractive options.

thea100 : INSPITE OF PRACTISING AND READING VARIED MATERIAL, I'M NOT ABLE TO IMPROVE MY SCORE IN RC
krishnendu : You need to focus on:(while reading the RC) 1. The central idea of the passage. 2. How is the author strengthening/weakening/rationalizing or explaining her points. 3. What is the overall attitude of the author towards the subject matter. While answering questions: 1. understand the question stem properly. Pay extra attention to the task being assigned by the question. 2. get your concepts of ASSUMPTION/CONCLUSION/INFERENCE/STRENGTHEN/WEAKEN etc clear once more. 3. Lear how to differentiate between two very similar options. Focus on the differences between the two. Keep practising RCs with various difficulty levels. Seek help of a faculty member if possible.

hbmg : NDIM VS SIES MUMBAI?
asim : SIES Mumbai

ankit : HOW IS IIM AMRITSAR? I HAVE CONVERTED IT...IIM AMRITSAR VS IIM NAGPUR
asim : Both are equally good options, you can choose either of them.

ankit : SIR,,CAN WE GET TO KNOW OUR WAT PI MARKS CONDUCTED BY IIMS?
revanth : Usually, the IIMs only reveal whether you have converted the Call, you're in the Waitlist or you have been rejected.

thea100 : IS GRE OR GMAT PORTION COVERED UNDER CAT?
asim : Only a small portion of it is covered, not completely though.

ankit : HOW ARE NEW IIMS DOING (5-6 YEAR OLD ONES AFTER SHILLONG)...IS IT WORTH JOINING?
asim : Yes, they are improving every year, moreover considering brand "IIM", they are surely worth joining.

arshi : IF I PREPARE FOR GMAT VERBAL QUESTION, IS IT GOOD ENOUGH FOR CAT TOO?
swapnila : Not really. CAT verbal is RC centric and the nature of passages is also quite different from the ones seen in GMAT.So it might be better that the two are not clubbed.

shri : HELLO SIR. IF YOU CAN RECOMMEND VARIOUS WEBSITES FROM WHERE WE CAN GET GOOD ARTICLES TO IMPROVE OUR PRACTICES IN RCS?
swapnila : You can choose the RC links uploaded on the SHP.

thebest : SIR, HOW TO INCREASE READING SPEED. IT IS PLAYING A VITAL ROLE SO PLEASE HELP ME.
swapnila : Reading continuously and on diverse topics could help you improve your reading speed.

bhavya : HI, CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGEST A FEW GOOD READS FOR IMPROVING COMPREHENSION.
arvind : Please read Economic Times, The Hindu papers; Read autobiography books, ...

ayushi : COULD YOU SUGGEST HOW TO IMPROVE IN PARA JUMBLES(CORRECT SEQUENCING OF SENTENCES). I USUALLY GET THE FIRST AND THE LAST SENTENCE CORRECT BUT THE MIDDLE ONES DON'T TURN OUT TO BE OF THE EXPECTED ORDER.
revanth : Hi Ayushi, Good that you are getting the first & last sentences correct in Para Jumbles. Try & find the Logical Links between the other sentences like "Cause & Effect", "Continuation of Idea" to improve your accuracy.

arshi : IF I AM ABLE TO DO 3 PASSAGES CORRECTLY OUT OF 5 IN THE AIMCAT, IS IT GOOD ENOUGH?
swapnila : This would depend on the number of questions you manage to get right. It is the correct answers that give you marks and not the number of passages you solve.

arushi : PLEASE SUGGEST SOME GOOD BOOKS FOR IMPROVING VOCAB AND READING SPEED
arvind : For Vocab- Word power made easy by Norman Lewis / All about words by Rosenblum For Reading speed - are you a avid reader ?

rishabh : HOW TO IMPROVE ON MY VA?
swapnila : Is there any specific section in VA that you would want inputs from us?

jeni : HAVING 3.7 YEARS WORK EXP. CONVERTED BIM TRICHY. IS IT WORTH TO JOIN ?
ramnath : What other options do you have and what is you cat score and background. Did you write cat earlier - if yes what was the score?

nita : IS BOOK 'HOW TO READ BETTER AND FASTER' BY NORMAN LEWIS GOOD?SHOULD I READ IT FOR RC?IS IT IMPORTANT?SOMEONE TOLD ME NOT TO READ IT.SHOULD I READ IT OR NOT?I AM CONFUSED
krishnendu : What finally matters at the end is what you take out from a book. You can read the book.

thebest : @SWAPNILA. MAM, HOW MANY MINIMUM NO.OF RC'S SHOULD I READ TO SCORE MAXIMUM.
swapnila : There are two things here. One you need to simply read on diverse topics for almost 30 mins everyday. This is to increase your comfort level with varied subject areas. The second would be to start solving the RC section tests uploaded on your SHP

jgns : SIR.I JUST STARTED MY PREPARATION..TODAY INGAVE A MOCK TEST..AND SCORED 21 RYT..OUT OF 35 ATTEMPTED . SO..FROM NOW HOW SHOULD I READ..??J
revanth : Good start. Please go through the review of the AIMCAT in a detailed manner to figure out the mistakes you committed, what are the other questions you could have attempted & where your score could have been improved.

nita : PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO USE CUE CARDS?HOW TO REMEMBER WORDS FROM IT?
arvind : Along with cards, you please read Word power made easy by Norman Lewis

aks : HELLO SIR , HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY RC SCORE?
krishnendu : You need to focus on:(while reading the RC) 1. Seek help of a faculty member if possible.

moksha : WHAT SHOULD BE THE IDEAL TIME DISTRIBUTION BETWEEN RC AND VA IN THE ONE HOUR SECTION?
krishnendu : There is no correct answer to this question but try 40-20 (RC-VA)or 30-20 and 10 mins for buffer.

sam : HELLO SIR/MA'AM, PLEASE TELL IF READING TOI NEWSPAPER IS GOOD ENOUGH OR SHOULD I BE READING SOME OTHER PAPERS AS WELL ? ALSO WHICH EDITORIALS TO READ?
krishnendu : Nothing is good enough as you need to continuously improve. Read one but read a few good articles every day and try to analyse it in terms of central idea, structure, idea flow, how the author is defending or explaining his position etc.

ankit : IIM RAIPUR, UDAIPUR, KASHIPUR AND NAGPUR..PLEASE ORDER..I HAVE BEEN WAITLISTED IN ALL OF THEM....PLEASE ADVICE...
ramnath : As Nagpur is in the new set of IIMs, it will make sense to give to the last pref. Between the other three, not much to separate them. You may take your call based on your location preference.

nita : SUGGEST GOOD BOOKS FOR GRAMMAR
swapnila : You could use the Grammar book given to you as part of the TIME material. This book along with the VA SM should be more than sufficient to help you solve the grammar based questions in CAT.

arshi : I AM ABLE TO ATTEMPT ALMOST ALL THE QUESTIONS IN THE 3 PASSAGES, BARRING ONE OR TWO WHICH I LEAVE BECAUSE I AM NOT TOO SURE ABOUT THE ANSWER. IS IT GOOD ENOUGH? I HAVE DIFFICULTY DEALING WITH 'TONE' OF THE PASSAGE QUESTIONS AND HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PASSAGE AS, ANALYTICAL, CRITICAL, ETC?
revanth : Hi Arshi, keep the accuracy up & you will do very well in RCs. Regarding Tone of the passage, please go through Basic Study Material SM1001702 Page 24,25.

manish : SIR I AM FROM HINDI BACKGROUND AND MY VOCAB IS VERY POOR, PLEASE SUGGEST ME HOW TO IMPROVE MY VOCAB AND IN RC AND VA SECTION
swapnila : One of the best ways of doing this would be to read as much as you can.The more you read the better your vocab would be.Apart from this you could also use the root prefix suffix method to work on your vocabulary.

swarnika : HELLO SIR/MA'AM, PLEASE TELL ME THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING RC SHOULD I READ THE QUESTIONS FIRST OR THE COMPLETE PARAGRAPH?
krishnendu : Read the questions first but only the stems. That should help you with the type of questions that you need to tackle.

ankit : HOW ARE NEW IIMS DOING (5-6 YEAR OLD ONES AFTER SHILLONG)...IS IT WORTH JOINING?? WHICH ONE OF THEM ARE REALLY WORTH JOINING IF NOT ALL OF THEM...PLEASE ADVICE!!
arvind : They are doing good. What options do you have?

abc : I GOT 81 IN XAT AND CONVERTED TAPMI AND FORE BUT WITHDREW MY DMISSION FROM TAPMI IN A HOPE FOR BETTER PERCENTILE THIS YEAR.LATELY,I HAVE STARTED TO REGRET THIS DISCUSSION BUT STILL HAVE FORE-IB IN HAND.WHATS UR TAKE ON THIS CONSIDERING MY PROFILE AS 85.5/81/72.92 IN 10TH 12TH GRAD BEING A GEM.SHOULD I JOIN FORE OR LEAVE THAT AS WELL
revanth : Hi ABC. Do you have any Work Experience ? You can definitely improve your Percentile this year by focusing properly & join a better B School next year.

siddharth : SIR, I JUST GAVE MY AIMCAT. I SCORED 45 IN VERBAL WITHOUT ANY PREPARATION. IS IT GOOD ENOUGH?
ramnath : That is score or percentile? 45 score without prep is a very good start. Keep it up.

ankit : IIM RAIPUR, UDAIPUR, KASHIPUR AND NAGPUR..PLEASE ORDER..I HAVE BEEN WAITLISTED IN ALL OF THEM....PLEASE ADVICE.....
arvind : IIM Raipur, Udaipur, Kashipur

shiv : GOOD EVENING TEACHERS YESTERDAY I GAVE AIMCAT AND I GOT ONLY 25 MARKS IN ENGLISH SECTION .I AM MUCH CONFUSED IN PARA JUMBLE QUESTION.WHAT CAN I DO?
revanth : Hi Shiv. AIMCATs are for your improvement so don't feel bad that you have been able to score only 25 marks in Verbal Section. Please go through the review of the AIMCAT in a detailed manner to figure out the mistakes you committed, what are the other questions you could have attempted & where your score could have been improved. Regarding Para Jumbles, please go through the SM & take help from the Faculty at your centre.

akash : I HAVE JUST STARTED MY PREPARATION.HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR RC AND VA IN REMAINING FIVE MONTHS?IS PERIOD OF FIVE MONTHS LESS OR SUFFICIENT FOR CAT PREPARATION?
krishnendu : The time available is sufficient if you are consistent with your preparation. Start with basic booklets and go on solving sectional test followed by advanced material. Solve old CAT and other exam papers too. You can easily ace the exam.

lc : HELLO SIR/MA'AM VA&RC IS MY STRONG AREA BUT OFF LATE I AM GETTING LOW MARKS AND PERCENTILE IN THE SECTION, GIVEN MY LAST TWO AIMCATS SCORE. I DON'T HAVE A GOOD COMMAND IN QA WHICH I AM TRYING TO WORK ON BUT I THINK DUE TO THAT EVEN MY STRONG AREAS ARE GETTING IMPACTED, PLEASE SUGGEST ME HOW TO OVERCOME THIS CHALLENGE.
revanth : Hi LC. Please do not get so worried about the percentiles initially. This is just the start, assuming that this is the first time you are going to take CAT. It is more important that you concentrate on properly figuring out your Strong & Weak areas. Scan the test, try to pick easier questions & improve your accuracy. Your Percentile will definitely increase.

tinu : HOW TO INCREASE READING SPEED?
arvind : To improve your Reading Speed, please go through the practice passages in SM1001702.

arshi : CAN YOU GIVE A COUPLE OF GOOD READS, I AM AN AVID READER.
arvind : Read Wings of Fire, Freakonomics, Deception Point, The Goal, Please subscribe to the newsletters suggested on your student home page

arushi : I'VE READ A FEW BOOKS LIKE EMMA, NORTHANGER ABBY, SHORT STORIES BY MARK TWAIN,1984ETC. BUT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO NOTICE MUCH DIFFERENCE IN MY VOCAB OR READING SPEED. WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST ?
revanth : Hi Arushi. To improve your Reading Speed, please go through the Practice passages in Basic Study Material SM1001702. They have been designed to help you improving your reading Speed by increasing your span of vision.

tb : SIR, DOES CAT CRITICAL REASONING HAS BOLDFACE QUESTIONS LIKE IN GMAT ?..
ramnath : We have not seen such questions in CAT, as yet!

pri : WHAT IS THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL OF AIMCATS COMPARED TO THE REAL CAT PAPER?
ramnath : Very close to the CAT overall. Keep in mind that AIMCATs reflect the different possible difficulty levels that you can get in CAT s- some will be easier than CAT, some at roughly the same level and some tougher. On the whole you will be prepared to tackle an surprise that CAT may throw at you, if you are thorough with the AIMCATs. All the best!!

shiv : SIR MY VOCAB IS WEAK I COMPLETE WORD POWER BUT MY VOCAB IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH WHAT CAN I DO?
krishnendu : You need to work on your vocab and grammar both. For vocab, now start solving a number of vocab based question sets from your study material. This would help you in revision and application both. Also read voraciously a wide variety of material to learn the small differences in meaning and their usage. Vocab would become better with wide reading and practice.

thebest : SIR, HOW TO SOLVE ODD ONE OUT QUESTIONS?
asim : In case you are referring to LR based OMO questions, the logic is to find three options which share a common quality, then the fourth one which does possesses that quality would be odd one out.

tb : HOW IMPORTANT ARE PARA SUMMARY AND PARA COMPLETION QUESTIONS ?
ramnath : In the last CAT, 6 questions were para based. That is about 20% of the paper and hence very important.

supriya : HOW MUCH TIME EVERY DAY SHOULD I DEVOTE TO RC,VA,VOCAB RESPECTIVELY
arvind : Whats your aimcat percentiles ?

niketa : I AM HAVING A LOT OF PROBLEM WHILE ANSWERING PARAJUMBLES WHEN OPTIONS ARE NOT MENTIONED. HOW CAN I IMPROVE THE SAME
asim : You need to work on the conceptual clarity, i suggest you discuss it with a faculty member at your center.

jgns : TY@REVANT SIR..MY ONE MORE ANSWER PLZ
revanth : Hi. Spread the topics associated with QA, DI, LR, Verbal Ability & RC across the. Don't study only one topic throughout the day. Figure out the areas you are Strong & Weak in. Please contact the Faculty at your centre & get a detailed Study Plan.

thebest : REVANTH SIR, I DID THE BASIC STUDY MATRIAL SM1001702 BUT IT DOESN'T HELPED ME. CAN YOU SUGGEST OTHER THAN THAT FOR IMPROVING SPAN OF VISION AND READING SPEED.
revanth : Hi. Any specific reason that you didn't find any improvement ? Usually the Reading Speed of students increases by at least 100 words per minute after they finish the exercise in BASIC STUDY MATRIAL SM1001702.

sam : @KRISHNENDU SIR, WE HAVE BEEN GIVE THE BASIC BOOKLETS BY THE CENTER AND SECTIONAL TESTS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE SHP BUT WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE ADVANCED MATERIAL MENTIONED BY YOU?
krishnendu : The second set of material which you would get, if not given by now.

aimcat : HI, SOMETIMES I GET ABOVE 99 PERCENTILE IN ENGLISH BUT OTHER TIMES AROUND 90. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO MAINTAIN THE CONSISTENCY? ANY REASON FOR THIS HUGE DIFFERENCE?
revanth : Hi. This variation in Percentile is due to the change in level of the AIMCATs. The level of AIMCATs is changed from one to the other so that you are able to understand the Test better & finally be prepared for all levels of CAT. A lot of our successful students have mentioned that after taking all AIMCATs, CAT became just another test for them rather than being an extremely stressful test.

kapooor : WHAT IS THE MAX. NUMBER OF QUESTIONS SHOULD WE ATTEPMT FROM RC SECTION? SAY WE HAVE TOTAL 24 QUESTIONS FROM RC DISTRIBUTED AMONG 5 PASSAGES? WHAT SHOULD OUR APPROACH BE HOW WOULD I KNOW WHAT PASSAGES TO LEAVE WASTING LEAST AMOUNT IF TIME?
revanth : Hi Kapoor. The number of questions to be answered depends on the difficulty level of the test. This is where AIMCAT helps you in understanding the test better as you come across various levels of the tests during the 25 AIMCATs. Skimming & Scanning through the RCs will help you determine which ones to pick. Try & understand what your strengths & weaknesses are among questions based on RC Summary, RC Speific, Inference, Parallel reasoning, etc.

akash : HOW TO DEAL WITH NEW WORDS THAT I COME ACROSS WHILE READING EDITORIOLS?HOE TO REMEMBER THEM?
asim : Constant revision/usage while communicating would surely help.

latesh : HELLO SIR/MAM HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE VA CONCEPTS
asim : First of all attend the classes regularly, then go through the basic study marerial, collect your doubts , discuss them with faculty members, then thoroughly practice with the rest of the T.I.M.E. material.

tb : I AM PRACTICING CRITICAL REASONING FROM GMAT MATERIAL.
shivabhaskaran : Try to prepare grammar and rc of GMAT, it will help u in CAT

supriya : @ARVIND SIR IT VARIES FROM 75 TO 85 PERCENTILE
arvind : Then pl spend at least 2-3 hours on English. Spend time on Reading Comprehension, Vocab and Grammar

tb : I AM PRACTICING CR FROM GMAT MATERIAL. MY QUERY IS WHICH LEVEL QUESTIONS SHOULD I SOLVE. SUB 500 LEVEL. 600-700 LEVEL OR 700+
krishnendu : All.

ankit : SIR.. IIM NAGPUR REVIEW NEEDED.. I HEARD PEOPLE STUDY AT IIM A IN SECOND YEAR... LOOKS MOUTH WATERING... CAN IT BE CHOSEN OVER IIMS DAT STARTED 5-6 YEARS BACK?
asim : There has been official announcement of that kind, right now the older ones seem more attractive ( given their proven track record ).

abc : @REVNATH SIR,I GRADUATED THIS YEAR ITSLEF AND HAVE TWO IT JOBS IN HAND NOT SURE OF THE JOINING DATE THOUGH.
revanth : Hi. If that is the case, please put in all your efforts for cracking this year's CAT & OMET like XAT, SNAP, etc. Try & utilise this time as effectively as possible as you will have the entire day for preparation.

thea100 : I MAINLY READ NOVELS BY JOHN GRISHAM , SYDNEY SHELDON,JEFFERY ARCHER.WILL IT HELP IMPROVE MY VOCABULARY AND READING SPEED.IF NOT WHAT SHOULD I READ?
krishnendu : I certainly would. Now start reading some non fiction books like India Unbound by Gurucharan Das, land of the seven rivers by Sandeep Sanyal or Sophie's world by Jostein Gaarder.

ankit : SIR.. IS IIM RAIPUR REALLY WORTH JOINING...I WILL CLEAR IT BASED ON LAST YEAR'S WAITLIST MOVEMENTS COMFORTABLY..
arvind : Last year the average salary was Rs.13.5 Lakhs per annum. What other options do you have now ?

soumen : IN THIS AIMCAT 1720, I GOT 50 MARKS IN VARC (RC-35 AND VA-15).I AM STRUGGLING IN VERBAL ESPECIALLY PARAJUMBLES QUESTIONS .HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY VERBAL?
asim : Do not be demotivated as still it is too early, there is enough time to work hard and improve. First of all attend the classes regularly, then go through the basic study marerial, collect your doubts , discuss them with faculty members, then thoroughly practice with the rest of the T.I.M.E. material

saiprasad : GOOD EVENING SIR WHAT IS THE BEST APPROACH FOR RC
krishnendu : You need to focus on:(while reading the RC) 1. Solve 4-5 RCs together while practising to increase stamina. Keep practising RCs with various difficulty levels. Seek help of a faculty member if possible.

sm : PLEASE SUGGEST THE RIGHT APPROACH FOR THE QUESTIONS IN VERBAL SECTION LIKE JUMBLED SCENTENCES, PARA COMPLETION ETC.
charlton : In the first reading try to understand the story and the events etc. Then in the second reading try to look at the grammatical elements etc. that will help you the sequence the sentences together. A) For parajumbles, Try to find the Introduction sentence, conclusion sentence, mandatory pair etc. B) For paracompletion, read the introduction and the penultimate sentences very carefully. Don't change the tense and don't introduce new points of view as these will need further clarification. Remember that you have to not only conclude but also complete the paragraph.

ankit : @ARVIND SIR..APART FROM IIM RAIPUR, I AM WAITLISTED IN MDI AND CONVERTED SIBM PUNE...
asim : You may prefer MDI Gurgaon if you convert their flagship PGPM program.

tb : HOW SHOULD I PREPARE PARA JUMBLES WITHOUT OPTIONS ?
charlton : Try to find the Introduction sentence, conclusion sentence, mandatory pair etc. Reading practice will help.

ankit : OK.. THANK U ALL THE TEACHERS FOR HELPING ME OUT!! :)
asim : On behalf of every one, you are welcome.

sm : APART FROM T.I.M.E MATERIAL WHAT OTHERS COULD WE FOLLOW IN ORDER TO PRACTICE VA AND RC?
shivabhaskaran : You can also work on the sectional tests, and later on many CRT's and MCT's will be uploaded in your home page, our materials are more than enough for practise

vibby : SIR,MOST OF THE TIME MY INFERENCE GOES WRONG............HOW COULD I IMPROVE IT
asim : You need to have conceptual clarity, i suggest you discuss it in person with a faculty member.

tb : HOW IMPORTANT ARE RESTATEMENT QUESTIONS ????
charlton : Summary or essence of the text questions are more important than restatement questions.

tb : HOW IMPORTANT ARE " MARK THE OPTION WHICH EXPRESSES THE IDEA IN THE MOST CONCISE MANNER " QUESTIONS ????
krishnendu : It is not possible to comment on importance of any kind of question as CAT and other Exams change their patter every year. So practise all kind of questions.

anmol : SIR WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUMMARY AND INFERANCE
charlton : Summary or essence of para in CAT is the summation of the most important of the most important points. Inference is a true statement which filters from the story. It need not contain all the important points. There will be many inferences from a para. You need to select the correct inference from the choices which will have only one inference. Strategies for summary or essence of para, para completion, parajumbles, parajumbles and odd man out have been shared in the chat transcript.

vibby : WHICH WEBSITE OR BOOK IS GOOD FOR SOLVING RCS
charlton : AIMCATs of TIME, TIME Material, Online sectional tests, Classroom handouts of TIME as well as last years' CAT papers available on ur student home page.

hwcd6e191 : SIT/MAM IAM VERY POOR IN VERBAL.FOR ME IN VERBAL % IS 35%.HOW CAN I PRACTISE FOR CAT?
ramnath : You seem to need a detailed handholding. Please approach a faculty from your center and get guidance. He/she will be able to look at your aimcat performances, help you identify your weak areas and give you a broad prep plan.

tb : HOW IMPORTANT ARE " MARK THE OPTION WHICH EXPRESSES THE IDEA IN THE MOST CONCISE MANNER " QUESTIONS ??????
charlton : Not as important as summary questions.

aish : HELLO SIR,PEOPLE SUGGEST ME TO NOT GO THROUGH THE WHOLE PASSAGE IN RC SECTION ...SINCE IT IS TIME TAKING ..HOW SHOULD I DO ??
krishnendu : With a lot of inference based questions in RCs, it is almost mandatory to go through the entire Rcs.

vic9965 : SIR.....I AM ABLE TO DO PRETTY WELL IN RCS,,,,DURING PRACTICE....SINCE NO TIME LIMIT IS THERE....BUT IN THE TEST...I FAIL TO PERFORM...??
charlton : Do not worry. Performance will improve after adequate practice. Spend around 8 min per RC, not more. Also judiciously do the verbal questions in about 15 to 17 min.

ankit : THANK Q TIME FROM BOTTOM OF MY HEART... UR AIMCATS WERE AWESOME!
charlton : You are welcome. All the best.

agrim : HELLO..IS IT POSSIBLE TO SCORE A GOOD PERCENTILE(FOR TOP 15 BSCHOOLS) IN CAT16 IF I START THE PREP. NOW?? IF YES THEN WHAT SHOULD BE THE STRATEGY??
ramnath : It will be possible..many have done so earlier. However, you need to ensure that you put in the necessary hardwork to identify and work on your weaknesses and build on your strengths.

s1994 : SORRY FOR THE DIGRESSION. NEED SOME ADVICE HERE..NON ENGG GRAD HERE.2015 PASSOUT. GOOD ACADS. CAT15-93.XX%ILE. SHOULD I GO AHEAD WITH IIM SIRMAUR? PLEASE SUGGEST.
charlton : Yes.

swaraj : GOOD EVENING FACULTY MEMBERS, I'M PREPARING FOR CAT'16 CURRENTLY I'M READING THE BLINK BY MALCOLM GLADWELL AND TIMES OF INDIA DAILY NEWSPAPER AND MONTLY MANAGEMENT AND EDUCATION MAGAZINE PROVIDED BY T.I.M.E . APART FROM THIS KEEPING IN MIND 4 MONTHS TIME LEFT FOR CAT'16 WHAT BOOKS & NOVELS SHOULD I READ AND SHOULD I SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE MONTHLY MAGAZINE ALSO FEW PEOPLE TOLD ME THAT THE HINDU IS A BETTER OPTION THAN TOI. IS IT SO? AND WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU SUGGEST?
charlton : There is not much time to read novels now. Pls focus on Sectional tests, AIMCATs and previous CAT papers for every area that the CAT tests you on. All the best.

vic9965 : SIR, HOW WAS AIMCAT 1720 VA/RC LEVEL IN ACCORDANCE WITH CAT?
ramnath : It is very similar to the CAT level.

tb : WHAT ARE ESSENCE OF THE TEXT QUESTIONS?????
charlton : Summary of the paragraph. You are supposed to solve the question by elimination of choices. Eliminate choices which are incomplete, out of scope, have wrong or distorted information and which are unnecessarily wordy.

saransh : IIFT THIS YEAR SO HOW TO PREPARE FOR IIFT
shivabhaskaran : work on english and gk more, quant will be easy if u work on pure maths areas

tb : PLEASE SUGGEST SOMETHING ROBUST FOR PARA COMPLETION. MY ACCURACY IS ONLY 40% IN THIS SEGMENT ?
charlton : If you are doing well in parajumbles, you should begin to do well in paracompletion. Look for strategies that I have given for parajumble and paracompletion questions in the chat transcript. Reading newspapers daily for half an hour also helps.

thebest : @REVANTH SIR. SIR, I DON'T NO THE EXACT REASON BUT I THOUGHT THAT IT MAY BE DUE TO LOW SPAN OF VISION & SUB VOCALISATION. I AM TRYING A LOT TO INCREASE SPAN OF VISION BUT I COULDN'T SO PLEASE HELP TO OVERCOME THIS. SIR, DOES THAT USE OF PEN WHILE READING HELP ME?
revanth : Although not advisable, if you use your pen or finger to track then just try moving it faster across the text. It will help in improving your Reading Speed.

vic9965 : ALSO SIR.......THE PARAJUMBLES PRESENTED IN AIMCAT ARE TITA TYPE QS.....AND THOSE IN SMS ARE OPTION BASED.....THIS TRANSITION CHANGES THE QUESTION ALTOGETHER
charlton : The practice in the study material will help you. In the TITA question type in the AIMCATs, make your own choices and see which one works. For example if you know that sentences 5,3 and sentences 1,4 come together, make choices like 25314, 53214, 14253 etc and see which one sounds like a proper flow or para structure.

saransh : I JOINED TIME THIS MONTH SO CAN I CRACK IIFT THIS YEAR
krishnendu : Work on you basics along with English and GK. Try to focus on speed building. It is certainly possible to crack it.

tb : ROBUST APPROACH FOR ODD SENTENCE QUESTIONS ??????/////
charlton : More or less the strategy is the same for parajumble questions and parajumble with odd sentence questions. For both, try to find the Introduction sentence, conclusion sentence, mandatory pair based on keywords or linking words etc. Reading practice will help. In addition, for odd man out question type, the odd sentence out can either belong to a totally different context (question becomes easy to solve) or it may come in another paragraph in the same article as the remaining sentences (this is difficult to solve). Read online from New York Times, Economist, The Hindu, The Huffington Post, The Guardian etc

ankit : URGENT ADVICE.. IIM TRICHY VS IIM RAIPUR..
shivabhaskaran : IIM Trichy for sure

pri : HOW MUCH DOES THE PERCENTILE IN ACTUAL CAT DIFFER FROM THE AVERAGE AIMCAT SCORES THAT WE OBTAIN?
charlton : Plus or minus 5 percentile provided you have also analyzed the AIMCATs thoroughly after each test.

rajat : HI SIR, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUMMARY BASED AND PARA COMPLETION BASED QUESTIONS.WHAT TO LOOK WHILE ANSWERING? PLEASE ANSWER.
ramnath : Para summary is to look for the sentence from the options that represents the idea(s) of the para. Para completion is to look for the sentence that carries the idea in the para forward and completes the para.

prat1491 : PLEASE GIVE TIPS TO ANSWER A RC QUESTION CORRECTLY, GIVEN THAT HE OPTIONS ARE PRETTY CLOSE AND CONFUSING AT TIMES.
charlton : Try to eliminate 2 wrong choices right away. Then confirm the right answer by reading quickly and scanning the important lines which will tell you the answer.

tb : ROBUST APPROACH FOR ODD SENTENCE QUESTIONS ??????/////?
charlton : More or less the strategy is the same for parajumble questions and parajumble with odd sentence questions. For both, try to find the Introduction sentence, conclusion sentence, mandatory pair based on keywords or linking words etc. Reading practice will help. In addition, for odd man out question type, the odd sentence out can either belong to a totally different context (question becomes easy to solve) or it may come in another paragraph in the same article as the remaining sentences (this is difficult to solve). tb : ROBUST APPROACH FOR ODD SENTENCE QUESTIONS ???
charlton : Already answered. Pls have a look. And all the best.

punjab : SIR I GOT 84 MARKS IN THE AIMCAT 1720..HOW WOULD U RATE MY PERFORMANCE...
charlton : Good for now. Try and take this to 120 in the next AIMCAT. Analyze your performance thoroughly. Learn and Revise all concepts, learn to apply them in online sectional tests and benchmark your performance and testtaking practice through AIMCATs.

vic9965 : SIR....I DONT SEE ANY SUCH BENEFITS OF STUDYING GRAMMAR...AS THEY ARE COMPLETELY OMITTED FROM CAT....IS IT IMPORTANT FOR XAT/IIFT??
swapnila : The frequency of grammar questions has come down, but that does not mean they wont be a part of CAT-16.

blacky : SHOULD I ATTEMPT ALL THE QUESTIONS THAT DONT HAVE NEGETIVE MARKS IN VERBAL ABILITY EVEN IF I DONT KNOW AN ANSWER.....I AM CONCERNED IF ACCURACY IS A CRITERIA FOR SELECTION INTO IIMS???
ramnath : Yes you can and should. As per the information put forward by the IIM on normalisation, accuracy doesn't seem to be a criteria. So it is safe.

tb : APPROACH FOR ODD SENTENCE ??
charlton : Already answered. Pls have a look

punjab : I WAS A STUDENT OF TIME FOR CAT-15...I GOT 84 MARKS IN AIMCAT-1720..HOW WOULS U RATE MY PERFORMANCE(CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT I HAD PREPARED WELL FOR LAST YEAR)?
charlton : Your performance needs improvement. You should cross 120 immediately.

saransh : IIFT PAPER IS PEN & PAPER BASED OR COMPUTER BASED ENTRANCE
shivabhaskaran : till last year paper pencil

shubham : SIR,CAT 16 IS GOING TO CONDUCT BY IIM BANGALORE AS PER HINDU NEWSPAPER. SO HOW CAN YOU EXPECT VARC SECTION FROM IIM B?
krishnendu : Lets not get into any guessing game. Does not help.

thebest : @REVANTHSIR. THEN WHAT CAN YOU SUGGEST ME FOR THE BEST RESULTS? WHAT SHOULD I DO?
revanth : Shift to Online articles. Do check your Online reading speed vs Normal reading speed. Generally students show different reading speeds.

tb : SIR/MAMHOW IMPORTANT ARE SENTENCE CORRECTION? PLEASE ANSWER THIS RATIONALLY, BECAUSE THESE TYPE OF QUESTIONS REQUIRE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF GRAMMATICAL CONCEPTS AND GRAMMAR IS VAST!
revanth : Hi TB. A lot of students feel that just because there were no grammar questions in CAT 2015, grammar can be ignored. Let us take a call on this once the Test pattern in declared. Until then please give enough time to improve your grammar based questions like Sentence Correction, etc.

arshi : WHAT IS THE AVERAGE TOTAL SCORE IN CAT THAT GETS US THROUGH TOP 15 B-SCHOOLS
ramnath : Arshi..A 55-65 percent range has been resulting in good percentiles so far.

blacky : SIR I PRACTICE VERBAL AND RC EVERYDAY...1 ON RC AND 5 QUESTIONS ON VA...IS TGIS ENOUGH TO IMPROVE MY SCORE IN RC AND VA....SOULD I OPT A MORE TEDIOUS ROUTINE?
revanth : Hi. More effort will definitely lead to improvement. It also depends on how much time are you taking to do this. Also keep in mind that you have to concentrate on QA, DI, LR preparation as well.

shakespeare : WITH HOW MUCH TIME LEFT FOR THE 1 HOUR MARK SHOULD I JUMP TO THE VA SECTION FROM RC?
ramnath : With 24 Qs, RC would need a good chunk of your time. The response to your questions varies from student to student, depending on various factors like reading speed, comfort with different topics, the length of RCs in that particular paper, the students comfort with VA vs RC etc. Keeping it simple, a broad split in proportion of the questions 25-75 is not a bad strategy either. However, in this approach, your passage selection needs to play a key role.

scarecrow007 : HOW TO DECIDE WHICH QUESTIONS IN RC MUST BE SKIPPED? AND WHAT SHALL BE THE ACCURACY RATE IN RC?
krishnendu : Aim for 70 percent accuracy consistently to begin with. If you cannot decide between two very close choices, you can skip the question.
