Chat on preparation tips for VA & RC!
(Chat Transcript)

vinay : HOW TO ACE GEOMETRY.
bharat : Right question, wrong chat.

abbay : HI SIR / MA'AM I SOLVED ONE RC BASED ON CULTURAL PLURALISM AND SOCIAL PLURALISM FOUND IT VERY DIFFICULT. I WHICH GENRE DOES THIS COMES AND FROM WHERE CAN I READ ABOUT THESE TOPICS?
prajnanray : You can read it from aldaily.com

ak : SIR HOW TO PREPARE FOR VA N RC HARDLY 3 MONTHS LEFT
prajnanray : Practise previous years' papers

jklm : HI..ITS BEEN MORE THAN 3 WEEKS..ARTICLES ON SHP ARE NOT UPDATED..AM I THE ONLY ONE FACING THE PROBLEM?
ramnath : which articles are you referring to?

ankit : RULE TO UNDERSTAND AND STRUCTURE OF PASSAGE AND MAP IT TO OUR MIND
ramachandran : Please rephrase your question

dheeraj : MY ACCURACY IN VARC IS AROUND 50%.HOW TO IMPROVE THIS?
prajnanray : practise as much as you can

vai : SIR PLEASE GIVE SOME TIPS FOR PARA JUMBLES
prajnanray : Read the basics from TIME material or lofoya.com, then practise a lot of the questions

vinay : QUANT CHAT IS AFTER 4 DAYS ND GEOMETRY IS KILLING ME PLZZ HELP.
asim : Start by solving the chapter from your basic study material booklet, in case you need help, you can take help of the solutions book provided to you. In case you still have doubts discuss with a faculty member. Follow it up with practice with online sectional test.

oo7 : SIR HELP ME I JUST CANNOT IMPROVE ON PAYING ATTENTION TO SMALL DETAILS OF RCS AND THUS I LOSE THE TRACK
kapildixit : Improve on question types and learn to scan passages. More you practise on scanning details will start coming.

abbay : AS CAT DATES ARE NOT OUT BUT IIFT NOTIFICATION IS OUT.IS THERE A POSSIBILITY THAT CAT AND IIFT MIGHT CLASH OR IT IS VERY UNLIKELY. I WANT TO WHETHER I SHOULD APPLY FOR IIFT OR NOT.
bharat : The CAT and the IIFT test have never clashed. Rest assured, please apply for IIFT if you wish.

dlcb6o313 : HI SIR/MAM I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO SOLVE RCS.. THE ANS WHICH I MARK BECOME WRONG MOST OF THE TIME SO WAT SHOULD I DO?
ramachandran : A clearer understanding of the passage will help you. Therefore, please read more

ak : SIR WHICH WEBSITES TO READ TO IMPROVE READING SPEED
shivabhaskaran : Wikipedia is of the good resources, reading will increase, your gk as well as reading speed on screen, the passages are written in smaller font, hence in CAT you will it easy

ankit : HOW TO RETRIVE USEFUL INFORMATION OUT OF PARAGRAPH TO GET ONE LINE SUMMARY INTO MIND?
krishnendu : 1. Pay attention to first linea nd lats line of every paragraph. 2. look for the main line of argument and then see how does the author support, negate or explain the main line of arguent. This should help.

ankit : HOW TO ELIMINATE TWO COMPETING ANSWER CHOICES ?
charlton : This is a problem that most students face. Practice will make you perfect. In VA-RC careful reading between the lines always helps. Good Luck

r12 : CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TYPE OF QUESTIONS CAN COME IN VA CAT...AND HOW IMP IS CRITICAL REASONING IN CAT?
krishnendu : It is difficult to predict anyting but do a number of RCs as well as Para jumbles, para completion, essence, summary, odd man out etc kind of questions. CR is extrelemy important so build a solid foundation in it.

viplove : THERE IS A CONCEPT CALLED SPEED READING( SCANNING 3-4 WORDS AT A TIME). HOW RELEVANT IT IS WHEN IT COMES TO RCS. NORMAL READING IS SUFFICIENT OR WE SHOULD DEFINITELY GO THROUGH SUCH PRACTICE.
shivabhaskaran : Increasing your eye span always will help you to crack more questions in less time

yes2016 : IS IT TRUE WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT A WORKING PROFESSIONAL SHOULD NOT AIM FOR BSCHOOLS APART FROM THE TOP20? THAT MIGHT NOT RESULT IN A GOOD ROI. PLEASE SUGGEST. I HAVE ALMOST 3.5 YEARS OF WORK EX.
ramnath : That depends on 2 factors - career aspiration and the current salary levels. The statement says so as the ROI, considering the opportunity costs (if you contibue in your current job), keeps dropping as one moves down the pecking order of the b-schools. While all schools in the top 2 categories as per our b-school categorization (http://www.time4education.com/CAT-MBA/List_of_B-Schools.aspx) top 10 and AAA ca be looked at for a person with your workex, getting into those out side these two should be done with a lot of care and thought.

oo7 : I EVEN GO BACK TO READ A PARTICULAR DIFFICULT LINE TWICE IS IT WISE TO DO THAT ? HOW TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO RC
krishnendu : It is perfectly ok to go back to info provided in the RC. It is even advisable.

abbay : @PRAJNANRAY SIR IN WHICH GENRE PLURALISM TOPIC COMES IN?
prajnanray : Depends on the article... But that doesn't matter

jack : SIR IM ABLE TO SOLVE EASY TO AVERAGE LEVEL OF RC QUITE EASILY BUT NOT ABLE TO ANSWER A DIFFICULT LEVEL ONE PLEASE HELP ME OUT SIR...NOT ONLY ABOUT RC ALSO REGARDING VOCAB AND GRAMMAR..??
kapildixit : Start reading & comprehending tougher articles from newspapers and magazines. After this practise through AIMCAT sets

mohits : SAR I SCORE GOOD MARKS IN ONE AIMCAT AND IN NEXT AIMCAT MARKS DECREASE DRASTICALLY AND THIS SAME PROCESS HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGAIN SAR CAN U TELL ME WHAT'S MY PROBLEM
krishnendu : I hope you are paying attention to the AIMCAT percentiles rather than only on scores as higher score in one test and low in another doesnot reflect anything concrete. Fluctuations in percentile occur due to lack of competency in a particular subject area. Analyse your sections. See what are your strong, weak and moderately strong areas and work accordingly.

shrey : HOW TO REMEMBER THE VOCABULARY WORDS I HAD LEARNT... I FORGET THESE WORDS AFTER SOMETIME?
shirish : revise them regularly. Use them in sentences. Organise those words which have a common root or prefix or suffix.

yogesh : HOW TO INCREASE ACCURACY IN RC
kapildixit : Start Practising sectional tests, if you have done the first book of RC. Try to improve speed and accuracy side by side.

mayank : HEYY SIR I M FACING PROBLEMS IN VA SECTION AS THE QUESTIONS WE FACE IN EXAMS ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN SM, SO WHERE CAN I FIND NEAR OR EXACT QUESTIONS LIKE D ONES ASKED IN XAMS???
shirish : AIMCATs are not actual CATs. Look at AIMCATS as STUDY MATERIAL. Re-sovle the solved AIMCATs, analyse your performance and learn from your mistakes. You will improve immensely. All the best. You will do well in actual CAT.

abbay : LEVEL OF RC IN IIFT IS SAME AS CAT OR DIFFICULT THAN CAT?
shirish : Almost the same. Don't worry. You will do well in all exams. All the best.

keshav : SIR, IN RC I GET NORMALLY 18 QUESTIONS CORRECT, BUT REST ARE WRONG.
shirish : Don't worry. Keep on practising. Analyse your wrong answers. You will learn a lot from your own mistakes. All the best.

vinay : DESPITE OF WRONG CHAT THNK YOU FOR ANSWERING.
shirish : No worries. YOu are always welcome. TIME faculties are the best in the world.

yogesh : HOW TO CRACK CAT WITHOUT STUDY
ramachandran : Please put in the requisite hard work

shraban : HOW TO MAKE THE BEST USE OF THE Q CARDS? I USUALLY GO THROUGH 2 CARDS A DAY. I CAN REMEMBER THE GENERALLY USED WORDS BUT FORGET THE REALLY OBSCURE ONES.
prajnanray : Don't worry. Practise as much as you can

shreyas : PLEASE GUIDE ME FOR VOCAB PREPARATION IN SHORT SPAN.
charlton : Concentrate on contextual reading and parabased questions

souravparkstree : HI
shirish : hi

tcp : WHEN I SPEED READ MY ACCURACY DROPS. HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THIS?
shivabhaskaran : Start reading editorials in a fixes time and try to reproduce the content in writing, if u r able to write about what u have read then you can increase the reading speed, if u are not able to write then reduce your reading speed and try.

oo7 : SIR BUT WHILE READING FOR THE FIRST TIME IS IT ADVISABLE TO GO BACK AGAIN TO A PARTICULAR DIFFICULT LINE OR PARAGRAPH AND THEN AGAIN START READING
philipthomas : You can read again but instead of rereading take the time to think before you move on to the next sentence or paragraph.

chandrajit : WHAT ARE THE TOPICS I NEED TO PONDER OVER FOR NMAT'S LANGUAGE SKILLS SECTION?
shirish : FOCUS more on vocabulary and grammar.

dheeraj : DURING AIMCATS I HAVE SPENT 40 TO 35 MIN ON RC AND REMAINING 20-25 MIN ON VA BUT I HAVE NOT SCORING AT THAT RATIO. SHOULD I SPEND EVEN MORE TIME ON RC ? HOW SHOULD I CHANGE MY STRATEGY
shirish : Yes. Para Jumbles, without options, are very time consuming. Do only selected para jumbles. And try do all the RC questions. All the best. This strategy will work very well for you. You will do well all your future ventures.

rohan : BHARAT SIR WHAT WAS THE APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF WORDS IN RCS CARRYING 6 QUESTION AND NO OF WORDS IN RCS CARRYING 3 QUESTIONS LAST YEAR AND THEIR LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY?
bharat : 450-550 words... level of difficulty varied between moderate to difficult.

dlcb6o313 : HI SIR/MAM I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO SOLVE RCS.. THE ANS WHICH I MARK BECOME WRONG MOST OF THE TIME SO WAT SHOULD I DO...?
cherian : Try reading questions first and then the passage. May get you better accuracy

akgr : SIR MY QA N LRDI PERCENTILE ARE ALWAYS ABOVE 95%ILE AND VA NEVER CROSSES 80 %ILE AND SCORE REVOLVES AROUND 30-35 PLZ HELP
shirish : Don't worry. You will improve as AIMCATs progress. Analyse your AIMCATS. learn from your mistakes. THe fact that you can score 95 percentile in other sections shows that you have a huge potential to do equally well in VA too. Keep working hard. Keep yourself motivated. Take, re-take all the AIMCATs, analyse them , learn from your mistakes. ALl the best.

swati : HI
rajivagarwal : practice all possible areas through booklets and aimcats . go through rc links on our website . read editorials from prominent newspapers and develop summaries of key ideas. Vocabulary must be learnt in context through editorials / passages . Practice a mix of all varieties - para jumbles / summary / inference etc with proper time management . Keep a record of your performance and identify weak areas and discuss with the faculty member

kriti : HELLO SIR! AT THIS LEVEL HOW MANY HOURS OF DAILY INPUT ARE REQUIRED GIVEN THAT ONLY 3 MONTHS ARE LEFT?
charlton : Around 3 hours of intense preparation everyday.

nik : SIR, ONCE I HAVE SCORED 68 IN VERBAL AND AFTER THAT MY SCORE DROPPED TO 45 AND THEN TO 37 AND EVEN 30 TOO WHEN IT WAS 30 I DIDNT EVEN CROSS THE CUTOFF IN VERBAL SECTION. PLEASE SUGGEST ME HOW TO IMPROVE AND WHAT SHOULD BE MY PREPARATION STRATEGY
philipthomas : DO NOT PANIC,STOP TAKING THE AIMCATS, REVISIT THE BASICS SECTION BY SECTION,GO ON TO ADVANCED LEVEL OF QUESTIONS BEFORE RESUMING WITH AIMCATS

akgr : AND ALSO I HV AN ACCURACY OF 80% IN RC N I AM ABLE TO DO AROUND 15-18 QUES BUT MY VA IS NOT GOOD PLZ GIVE SOME TIPS
krishnendu : Solve all the basic material followed by sectional tests and then advanced sets. Should help.

ankit : SIR/MA'AM, WHICH STRATEGY WOULD YOU ADVICE FOR RC, GO THROUGH PASSAGE THEN SEE QUESTIONS OR HAVE A QUICK LOOK THROUGH QUESTIONS THEN READ PASSAGE AND ASNSWER QUESTIONS?
philipthomas : Please do not be in a hurry to answer questions ,the focus should be on comprehending the passage ,so you should start with the passage.

abhi : IS THERE ANY APP TO DO VOCAB FOR CAT BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY FOR GRE EXAM.. COZ I FOUND IT IS VERY EFFICIENT WAY TO LEARN VOCAB THAN FLASHCARDS
prajnanray : Yeah many

jha : HI SIR,I AM GETTING VERY LOW MARKS AND OFTEN CONFUSED WITH ANSWERS..ITS NOT THAT I DONT UNDERSTAND THE RC'S..IT JUST I DONT KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING..PLEASE HELP ME OUT...WHAT SHOULD BE THE STRATEGY FOR DOING VERBAL SECTION? KINDLY TELL ME FROM STAGE-1..
shirish : Consult your faculty member, sit with him with one or two solved AIMCATs. He or she will find out what exactly the problem is. A general guideline is repeat AIMCATs and introspect and learn from errors. All the best.

jklm : @RAMNATH: UNDER ACADEMIC INPUTS THERE ARE RC PASSAGES TO READ FROM VARIOUS TOPICS..THESE ARE UPDATED EVERY WEEK..HOWEVER, I DO NOT SEE THEM UPDATED...
ramnath : We have been updating them regularly. We will double check however.

mojojojo : WHAT IS SHP ?
krishnendu : Student Home Page.

vinayk : I DON'T UNDERSTAND BY RC I AM FORM HINDI MEDIUM STUDY
shirish : Don't worry. Don't curse your medium. Hindi is a great language. In fact, all Indian languages are great. Unfortunately, despite being an Indian exam, CAT is available only in English. But one can learn and master any language, if one is ready to put in hard work and consistent efforts. Take the guidance from your faculty member. Improve your vocabulary. Keep reading articles from newspapers. When you come across new words, learn them and revise them everyday. Take AIMCATs fearlessly. Analyse them. you will do well. All the best.

swati : I AM ONLY FOCUSSING ON RCS. CONSIDERING ATTEMPTING 20 RC QUESTIONS OUT OF ENTIRE 34, TO FETCH AN OVERALL 96-99+ IS POSSIBLE?
krishnendu : Are you sure the CAT this year will have the same format as last year? As nothing is known about the format till now, suggest you focus on all kind of questions. You should try to do an many questions as you can as percentile will depend on what others are doing rather than what you are doing.

chandrajit : HOW TO DO THE PARAJUMBLES PROPERLY IN CAT?IN THE RECENT AIMCATS AT LEAST 5 TO 6 QUESTIONS ARE COMING FROM PARAJUMBLES.
philipthomas : Once you have attended the basics session in the classroom you need to set apart a day for this question, and do atleast 50 to questions at a stretch , keep writing your notes on the side regarding the choices you made and check with the solution to know where you went wrong, do this in sets of 10.

: I ALWAYS FEEL I AM ENTERING THE CORRECT
ramachandran : Please rephrase your question

need_urgenthelp : SIR FEW DAYS BACK WESCHOOL LAUNCHED 2 FULL TIME PGDM PROGRAMS VIZ. BUSINESS ANALYTICAL AND MEDIA & ENTERTAINMENT.... TODAY I LEARNED THAT ONLY THOSE STUDENTS WHO ARE EXTREMELY GOOD IN HIGHER LEVEL OF MATHS SHOULD OPT ANALYTICAL MBA, BECAUSE ITS MATHS IS EXTREMELY TOUGH, ON THE OTHER HAND I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE HOW THE MEDIA PGDM WOULD BE, I MEAN DON'T KNOW WILL THE MEDIA JOB HAVE A FIXED TIME OF WORK OR IT WILL NOT HAVE ANY FIX WORKING HOURS.. PLEASE HELP
cherian : Analytics is a hot sector now. Media may not be advisable as it is a specialised MBA. Better bet would be an MBA with marketing specialisation which would give you more options

tcp : HOW TO AVOID REGRESSION?
shirish : The best way to avoid regression is to develop a great sense of urgency while reading. But first you need to find out the particular reason behind the regression that you have to do. Lack of vocabulary, unfamiliarity of the topic, less exposure to different writing styles , lack of concentration, lack of ability to grasp long sentneces . Find out your own problem and work up on it. All the best.

yes2016 : THANK YOU RAMNNATH SIR, I AM CURRENTLY AVERAGING AROUND 85PERCENTILE AND CLOCKING IN AROUND 30 HOURS A WEEK WITH AROUND 50 HOURS OF WORK/WEEK AND APPROXIMATELY 15 HOURS OF CLASSROOM COACHING HOWEVER STILL NOT ABLE TO SEE A DRASTIC IMPROVEMENT IN MY SCORES. I CROSSED 90 PERCENTILE TWICE HOWEVER THEN MY SCORES HAVE DROPPED. THIS IS CONCERNING ME A LOT. PLEASE HELP!
ramnath : AT 90 percentile with 3 more months to go is a good place to be in. So, throw out that disappointment from your tone. Focus on working on your weak area - use the AIMCATs to help you with this. Accuracy is another key factor - analyse why and where you are going wrng, identigy the major root causes and work on them - silly errors, deliberate/not-thought-through responses/improper subject undertanding etc. This analysis will help you get more out of the questions you have attempted. coming to increasing your no. of responses, work on question selection - stay away from the tough and seemingly tough ones and do not let the easy ones slip by. ALl the best.

jitesh : HELLO.. I HAVE BEEN GETTING AROUND 85-86 PERCENTILE IN AIMCATS SO IS IT REALLY WORTH TAKING NMAT , IIFT EXAMS OR SHOULD I SAVE THAT MONEY TO APPLY TO MORE NUMBER OF COLLEGES(BBB OR BB CATEGORY I GUESS) IN WHICH I MAY GET ADMISSION THROUGH CAT ?
cherian : Yes. You need multiple options in case CAT doesn't work out for whatever reason.

: SOMETIMES IN FACT MOST OF THE TIMES I AM ABOUT 100% SURE THAT MY ANSWER IN THE RC SECTION IS CORRECT BUT EVERY TIME IT TURNS OUT THAT THERE IS A DIFFERENT ANSWER. ONCE I ANSWERED WHAT WAS 'EXACTLY' WRITTEN IN THE PASSAGE, I FOUND THE EXACT SAME WORDS IN ONE OF THE OPTIONS AND IT SATISFIED THE QUERY BUT IT STILL WAS WRONG
ramachandran : Try and zero in on the answer by eliminating choices

shreyas : SHIRISH SIR, DOES REALLY NECESSARY TO LEARN ALL THE WORD FROM TIME VOCAB CARD?
ramachandran : Please get a "feel" for words through reading

ffhfdhtt : WHAT ARE EXPECTED CHANGES IN THIS YEAR'S PATTERN?
bharat : Wait for the CAT notification... no guessing!

r12 : IN AIMCAT I SOLVE AROUND 15 QUES IN RC IN WHICH 7R AND 8W...MY ACCURACY LEVEL IS NOT IMPROVING AND FOR THE SAME REASON MY PERCENTILE IS LOW
krishnendu : It is possible that you are not paying attention to the main idea of the passage. Try to analyse the first few words of every option. They may help you eliminate choices better. Try to look for differences between options. That should help you find the correct answer.

vinayk : I DON'T UNDERSTAND RC I AM FORM HINDI MEDIUM BACKGROUND SO WHAT I DO THEN IMPROVE MY ENGLISH FAST PLEASE GUIDE ME SIR
ramachandran : Please read whatever you can read and understand. Raise your standard gradually

jack : SIR HOW TO CHECK WHETHER MY QUESTION IS ANSWERED OR NOT??
charlton : Scan through the chat transcript.

mohits : SAR IS GRAMMAR NECESSARY FOR CAT .CAN I GO WITHOUT GRAMMAR IN EXAM
bharat : It is quite important... we suggest you put in sufficient practice to learn grammar.

ash : I JUST GET LOST WHILE GOING THROUGH THE RC PASSSAGES...HOW TO REMEMBER THE KEY POINTS IN A PARA? AND SHLD WE GO THROUGH THE QUESTIONS ONCE BEFORE STARTING THE RC PASSAGE?
shirish : Choose the strategy that suits you well. Reading questions before reading the passage can be helpful. But it all depends on you. Some people don't like to read questions before reading the passage. When you read the passage, read a little bit slowly at the beginning. While reading your entire focus should be on getting the main idea of a para. In a para, there will be sentences which carry the main idea and others which support them. By separating out supporting sentences from those which carry the main idea, you will be able get the crux of the passage. You can even quickly note down the main ideas in bullet points on the rough paper provided to you. This way you will be able to remember the main ideas of the paragraph. Hope this will help you. All the best.

mbaaspirant : I AM DOING ARUN SHARMA'S 2500 WORDS FOR VOCAB... IS THAT ENOUGH OR DO I NEED MORE?
ramnath : While having a good vocab will help, vocab is not to be given too much special attention, from a cat perspective. Direct vocab Qs have not been appearing in CAT of late.

tcp : I AM ABLE TO ATTEMPT THE ENTIRE SECTION BUT MY ACCURACY ISN'T THAT GREAT. HOW CAN I IMPROVE? ALSO YOU ADVISED TO READ WIKIPEDIA BUT WHAT TO READ IN WIKIPEDIA AS IN WHERE TO BEGIN AND HOW TO TRAVERSE?
ramachandran : A more judicious selection of questions will result in greater accuracy

sunny : IS READING NOVELS IMPORTANT FOR CAT EXAM AND FOR GD PI ROUNDS?? I READ NEWSPAPERS AND OTHER MAGAZINES FOR VOCAB AND ALL.
shivabhaskaran : Read Articles on various issues arsing around the globe and in Inida

mbaaspirant : IS ARUN SHARMA + TIME SECTIONAL TESTS ENOUGH FOR VERBAL?
prajnanray : Nothing is enough. Do as much as you can

abhi : SIR HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY VOCABULARY IN SHORT SPAN OF TIME
ramachandran : Please read. Accumulate words

kriti : SIR PLS HELP IN MAKING A FIXED TIMETABLE THAT CAN BE FOLLOWED ON A DAILY OR WEEKLY BASIS. I DONOT WANT TO LEAVE ANY STONE UNTURNED IN ORDER TO CRACK CAT?
ramachandran : Please, therefore, put in as much effort as you possibly can

need_urgenthelp : SIR I LIKE TO READ ENID BLYTON NOVELS, AND OTHER NOVELS WHICH ARE RELATED TO TEENAGER STORIES... AND DON'T FIND ELDER PEOPLE NOVELS... WILL ONLY READING NOVELS OF NOVELISTS LIKE BLTYON AND RUSKIN BOND WILL HELP ME TO IMPROVE ENGLISH OR NOT??
philipthomas : THESE NOVELS WILL DEFINITELY HELP IN IMPROVING YOUR LANGUAGE BUT ARE INADEQUATE AS FAR AS IMPROVING SCORES AT THE CAT IS CONCERNED.

rohan : SIR WOULD IT BE ADVISABLE TO COMPLETELY LEAVE PARA-JUMBLES WITHOUT OPTIONS AS THEY CONSUME MORE TIMES AND HAVE LESS PROBABILITY OF GETTING CORRECT ANSWER..AND STILL TRYING TO SECURE MORE THAN 95 PERCENTILE IN PAPERS LIKE CAT LAST YEAR
krishnendu : Scanning the questions on PJ is advisable as some of the factual Pjs are pretty doable. You can get that percentile without PJs depending on the difficulty of the papar and how others perform.

mbaaspirant : THERE IS A BOOK - A MIRROR OF COMMON ERRORS. IS THIS BOOK SUFFICIENT FOR SENTENCE CORRECTION?
ramachandran : Our material is very good indeed and is adequate.

mayank : I AM A CAT16 ASPIRANT AND I HAVENT READ ANY BOOK YET... ANY RECOMMENDATION FROM WHERE SHOULD I START OF?
bharat : Start with your study material... focus on online sectional tests and handouts. Graduate to AIMCATs and Mock CATs.

ash : CAN U SUGGEST ANY GOOD WEBSITE FOR READING ARTICLES USEFUL FOR RC PASSAGE SECTION?
ramnath : If you are a T.I.M.E. student, the rc links on your student home page will help. Go through them if you are not using them already. You can also try magportal.com

uday : IS IT ADVISABLE TO READ QUESTIONS OF RC, BEFORE GETTING INTO PASSAGE? I AM KIND OF ALLOTTING 30-40 SECONDS FOR READING THE QUESTIONS FIRST. PLEASE SUGGEST ANY GOOD BOOKS FOR PREPARING GRAMMAR. APART FROM TIME MATERIALS. THANKS!
shirish : Reading questions before the passage might help. It depends on the questions. For specific questions - questions based on specific ideas of the passage, reading questions first might help. You can remember the question while reading and as soon as that idea comes, you can find out the answer. For grammar, read quality books, magazines. novels which are error-free. It won't be appropriate to boast myelf, but , since you have asked for material outside TIME material, I am suggesting my own novel "The Noble Terror". It does not have a single grammatical error. An american reviewer has said so. All the best to you.

mbaaspirant : PLEASE TELL WHERE CAN I LEARN CR FROM. SHOULD I TAKE HELP FROM GMAT BOOKS LIKE POWERSCORE CR BIBLE?
shirish : Not necessary. The TIME material, including mock papers, is enough.

vai : SIR I AM BAD AT REMEMBERING WORDS. WHAT SHOULD I D?
prajnanray : Read Word Power Made Easy...

chandrajit : SOMETIMES WE GET CONFUSED WITH TWO OPTIONS GIVEN AS OPTIONS IN PARACOMPLETION QUESTIONS.BOTH SEEM TO BE CORRECT.HOW WILL I ELIMINATE ONE OPTION AND TICK THE CORRECT ANSWER?
ramachandran : There is always a difference and a good reader will be able to spot the most subtle of differences

yes2016 : MY PROFILE IS AS FOLLOWS, 10TH : 89, 12TH : 85.4, GRAD : 74.5. WORK EX 3.5
ramachandran : Good . Best of luck.

ggca6o105 : WHAT SECTION SHOULD BE ATTEMPTED FIRST; RC OR VA?
philipthomas : You should the MCQs first regardless of whether they come under RC or VA

swati : MAM/ SIR. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STRATEGY TO SOLVE RC QUESTIONS?
prajnanray : Practising

mbaaspirant : FOR TARGETING TOTAL 99.5 PERCENTILE IN CAT AND VA BEING WEAKER AREA HOW MANY QUESTIONS SHOULD I ATTEMPT IN VA?
shirish : As many as possible, this would be the best answer. But studends need some number, I will say in the range of 25-28. But this is just wild guess. As it depends on various factors: difficulty level of the paper on the CAT day, your accuracy level and so and so forth. But your desire to achieve a high score will take you to that level. Keep working hard. You will get what you want. All the best.

geet : GOOD EVENING TEACHERS, SORRY Y QUESTION IS SOMETHING OUT OF CONTEXT BUT WOULD YOU SUGGEST ME THE PROCEDURE OF SELECTION FOR PH CATEGORY STUDENTS IN TOP B SCHOOLS? IS THERE ANY PROCESS OF DISABILITY INSPECTION DURING ADMISSION PROCESS? PLS SUGGEST
krishnendu : Most of the colleges would ask you to submit proof of PH from a certified doctor. No inspection as such.

mohits : SAR SHOULD WE FOCUS NOW ON READING NOVELS
prajnanray : Not now

jack : SIR IM NOT FINDING MY QUESTION....
prajnanray : Type again

prince : HI,SIR..HOW TO SCORE 90+ IN VA ..HOW MANY QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ATTEMPTED AND WITH WHAT ACCURACY?
prajnanray : 18 with 100% accuracy

mbaaspirant : I HAVE 20 MONTHS WORK EX AND AFTER THAT SITTING AT HOME FROM APRIL. WHAT CAN I DO DO COMPENSATE FOR THIS AFTER APRIL TIME?
shirish : You may do some short term course in your area.

moksha : HOW TO ANALYSE RC & VA IN AIMCATS?
shirish : By finding difficult , moderate and easy questions.

tcp : MOST OF THE TIMES, RC IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR ME BUT VA IS A PAIN AREA. HOW CAN I WORK ON IT DURING OFFICE HOURS?
prajnanray : Practise a few questions everytime you get some time

: JUST SOLVED A SAMCAT, FELT RC WAS PRETTY EASY AS COMPARED TO PREVIOUS AIMCATS, TURNED OUT IT WASN'T SO, ANSWERED 16 OUT OF THE 24 QUESTIONS IN RC AND FOUND ONLY 8 OF THEM CORRECT, A SIMPLE STRAIGHT FORWARD ANSWER ALSO DOESN'T SUFFICE, I ALWAYS GET THEM WRONG.
ramnath : The VA section is a silent killer - you never know that you got murdered :). Particularly when you treat the exam lightly which most likely happened in this case, it could hurt you more. The learning is that you need to be on your guard at all times.

rahul : @RAJIV AGARWAL SIR WILL FOCUSING ON RCS RATHER THAN OTHER VERBAL SECTION WOULD BE RIGHT STRATEGY TO SCORE MORE THAN 95 PERCENTILE IN CAT? AND WHERE TO PRACTICE RCS OF SIMILIAR DIFFICULTY LEVEL AS CAT?
shirish : Possible. Since RCs have a very high weight age in CAT, it makes sense to concentrate on RCs. But at the same time you should keep on working on other question types too. Regard AIMCATs as study material only. Keep taking the same AIMCATs again and again. Analyse them and learn from your mistakes. All the best.

abhi : SIR IF I DONT HAVE TIME TO READ BOOKS AS OUR PLACEMENTS IS GOING ON.. FROM WHERE CAN I DO THE VOCABULARY.. ARE WORDS REQUIRED FOR CAT AND GRE THE SAME?
shirish : They may be same. Word cards given by TIME will also be very helpful. All the best.

mbaaspirant : IF THERE IS ANY CHANGE IN CAT PATTERN, WILL ALL AIMCATS + SAMCATS BE CHANGED ACCORDINGLY?
krishnendu : Yes.

shrey : SIR I HAVE HEARD THAT WATCHING ENGLISH MOVIES CAN IMPROVE ENGLISH. IS IT ADVISABLE TO SPEND TIME IN WATCHING ENGLISH MOVIES RATHER THAN READING??
cherian : The English used in movies would have nothing to do with your CAT prep. On fact it would be counter productive

mohits : SAR HOW MUCH QUESTION WE NEED TO SOLVE FOR GETTING 85 PERCENTILE WITH 100% ACCURACY
ramachandran : THere is no fixed number. Please attempt the number of questions your knowledge allows you to

swati : OK SIR. I WOULD SURELY FOCUS ON PRACTISING. THANKYOU.
shirish : Welcome. All the best.

jha : SIR HOW MANY MOCK TESTS ONE SHOULD TAKE AT THIS POINT OF TIME?WHETHER IT SHOULD BE TAKEN ON DAILY BASIS OR WHAT?
ramachandran : A mock a day , followed by analysis, will definitely help you. Please do more if your time permits.

k : SIR MY AVG AIMCAT PERCENTILE TILL NOW IS 85%ILE. DO I STAND ANY CHANCE OF SCORING 99.5%ILE IN CAT OR SHOULD I FOCUS MORE ON EXAMS LIKE NMAT AND IIFT?
philipthomas : You need to understand that you are still preparing for the CAT and we do not prepare you for the AIMCATs , the AIMCATs are used to prepare you for the CAT which is still another 3 months away so keep preparing , do analyse the AIMCATs identify the problem areas, consult with your mentor and improve your skills and performance

geet : KRISHNENDU SIR, ANY MINIMUM PERCENTAGE IN DISABLITY REQUIRED? HOW MUCH MIN %ILE IS TO BE SCORED TO GET FMS AND IIMS CALL?
krishnendu : percentage of disability is not fixed really. Depending on the level of competition and number of seats available, upward of 75 is a must.

mohiit : SHIRISH SIR ARE GRAMMAR AND OTHER VERBAL SECTION IMPORTANT GIVEN LAST YEAR CAT PATTERN? WHEN WOULD THE NEW PATTERN WITH MOCK LIKELY TO BE ANNOUNCED ..APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY DAYS BEFORE CAT?
shirish : I guess, the pattern is likely to remain the same. In case , any changes, the pattern will be announced before the exam. But looking at the overall trend, there will be fewer questions on vocabulary and grammar. So focus more on RC, but don't neglect grammar and vocabulary completely.

: SIR, I HAVE READ WORD POWER MADE EASY HALF, SHALL I COMPLETE IT OR NOT BECAUSE IT MAY TAKE ONE-TWO MONTHS AND THEN FOCUS ON RC
shirish : Focus on RC. Not many direct vocabulary questions will appear in CAT.

mohits : SAR FOR TOP 60 COLLEGE HOW MUCH %ILE WE NEED
cherian : Depends on category. Even among IIMs range is from 96 -99.6. Around 70%Ile should be sufficient

mohits : SAR FOR TOP 60 COLLEGE HOW MUCH %ILE WE NEED
prajnanray : 75+

mohits : SAR SHOULD NOW I START WORD POWER MADE EASY
prajnanray : Yes parallelly with everything else...

tcp : PLEASE SUGGEST HOW TO SELECT QUESTIONS PROPERLY.
prajnanray : Knowledge of how difficult the question is, is necessary. That comes through practise

chandrajit : IF I FOCUS ON THE 24 RC QUESTIONS COMPLETELY AND LEAVE THE OTHER VA SECTION.I WILL TRY TO DO ALL THE RCS CORRECTLY.WILL THIS STRATEGY WORK OR IS THERE ANY SECTIONAL PERCENTILE THING FOR TWO PARTS INSIDE THE VA & RC SECTION AS WELL?
ramachandran : Prepare in such a manner that there are no chinks in your armour. Please be good in all areas of English language

swati : THANKYOU SIR
prajnanray : Welcome

abhi : SIR IF I DONT HAVE THE TIME TO READ BOOKS AS PLACEMENTS GOING ON.. FOR WHERE CAN I DO VOCAB? IS VOCABULARY REQUIRED FOR GRE AND CAT THE SAME?
charlton : Concentrate on contextual reading and parabased questions

manik : SIR ,AS I AM VERY WEAK IN QA. SO WHAT SHOULD I DO TO IMPROVE MY QA SKILLS
shivabhaskaran : Master the basics first, you can refer maths text books from sixth standard onwards(cbse), go through it, then understand the basics, then start working problems in time line, Once u master the basics u will gain confidence . Skill is a combination of concept and practise.

ritesh : SIR, I HAVE COMPLEATED MY BASICS AND ALSO SOLVED FEW QUESTION FROM RC TO VA AND ALSO QUANT AND LR ...
shirish : Good. All the best. You will be successful.

sandy : SIR HOW CAN I GET STUDY MATERIAL FOR IIM INTERVIEW?
ramachandran : Our Study Material is very good indeed.

mayank : PLEASE DEFINE A" GOOD READER" AS ALL FACULTY MEMBERS PUT IT??
philipthomas : A good reader is a person who is comfortable with all topics , all styles, does not move on to the next sentence without having understood the previous sentence and most of all, enjoys reading

ritesh : SIR HOW TO BE PERFECT IN ANY TOPIC THROUGH PRACTICE...
ramnath : Your question has the answer :). On a serious note, thorough understanding of the concepts of the topic, exposure to the various question types from that topic and applying the conceptual understanding to solve the questions in the quickest way - a combination of these three over a good number of questions will help.

sunny : SIR I HAVE COMPLETED MY 1ST SET OF BOOKLETS BUT NOT STARTED ANY INTERMEDIATE OR ADVANCED TEST AND NEITHER THE SAMCATS. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL BY WHEN SHOULD I COMPLETE THESE INDIVIDUALLY
ramachandran : Start at your earliest

ankit : RULE TO UNDERSTAND STRUCTURE OF THE PASSAGE AND MAP IT SO THAT FLOW OF THAUGHT IS CLEAR.
charlton : Read, skim and scan. Understand the overall central idea and how one para is linked to another. After having understood the gist of the passage, attack the questions and answer them by elimination wrong options. To do that reread the lines which give away the answer very carefully.

shraban : IM A COMMERCE BACKGROUND STUDENT AND I HAVE A TOUGH TIME READING RC PASSAGES OF SCIENCE GENRE.
ramachandran : Please read science articles that come in newspapers and magazines. Will make it easier for you

chandrajit : SIR THAT IS TRUE BUT MY QUESTION IS IF I DO RC QUESTIONS ONLY AND LEAVE THE VA PART.WILL THAT WORK?
bharat : May or may not. Mostly may not. Why take a chance when you can put in the required effort to do well in VA? Work hard. Our best wishes.

ritesh : SIR HOW CAN I BE PERFECT IN VA,...MY RC IS GOOD, BUT IN VA I DONT GET EXACTLY WHAT TO READ, OR SHOULD I JUST KEEP PRACTICING
ramachandran : JUST KEEP PRACTISING. WILL DEFINITELY HELP

ravi : SIR I HAVE READ HARDLY 5-6 NOVELS IN THE LAST 8 MONTHS OR SO . HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I BE DEDICATING IN IMPROVING MY READING SINCE I HAVE NOT BEEN SCORING GOOD IN VA & RC OR IS IT NOT AN OPTION NOW AND I SHOULD ONLY BE PRACTICE RC FROM TIME BOOKLETS ?
cherian : It's better to read Hindu newspaper daily than to read novels as the language may vary

suramya : SIR, IN RC I AM ABLE TO DO QUESTIONS AND GET A REASONABLE SCORE. ALSO I KNOW THAT I CAN PRACTICE THROUGH ONLINE TESTS AND AIMCATS. I FACE A DIFFICULTY IN VERBAL ABILITY PROBLEMS, ESPECIALLY THE QUESTIONS REGARDING VOCABULARY. IN SUCH SHORT SPAN OF TIME, HOW DO I WORK TOWARDS IMPROVING THE VOCABULARY SCORE?
ramachandran : Reading - and garnering words through reading - will help you acquire a meaningful vocabulary.

jusha : HOW TO DIVERSIFIED READING....FROM WHERE I CAN GET TO READ SUCH TYPE OF TOPICS THAT WE GET IN OUR READING COMPREHENSIONS SOO THAT I CAN BE IN PRACTICE OF READING SUCH CONTENTS
ramachandran : Editorials.

shashank : WHILE PRACTICING RC, IF I'M STUCK AT SOME WORD, SO SHOULD I STOP AND LOOK FOR THE MEANING OF THE WORD OR CONTINUE READING? (IGNORE THE WORD THAT TIME AND LOOK FOR THE MEANING LATER)
cherian : Try deciphering the meaning of the word from the context of the passage and sentence construction

sunny : SIR/MAM CR FROM TIME MATERIAL IS ENOUGH FOR XAT?
bharat : yes

bhcc6wa60 : SIR I TRY TO READ NEWSPAPER EVERY DAY.I HAVE ALSO READ 2 NOVELS IN LAST 2 MONTHS BUT STILL MY PERCENTILE IN VA & RC SECTION IS ALWAYS VERY LOW.
shirish : Don't fret. Now it is time to analyse your performance in AIMCATs. Find out the kind of errors you have committed. Learn from them. Read passages that have appeared in AIMCATs again and again. You will certainly improve your comprehension level.

bhcc6wa60 : SIR I TRY TO READ NEWSPAPER EVERY DAY.I HAVE ALSO READ 2 NOVELS IN LAST 2 MONTHS BUT STILL MY PERCENTILE IN VA & RC SECTION IS ALWAYS VERY LOW.
krishnendu : START SOLVING THE PRACTICE BOOKLETS. THEN TAKE UP SECTIONAL TEST.

ritesh : SIR,..I GET CONFUSED THAT, WHETHER I SHOULD COMPLETE THE MORE TOPIC IN LESS TIME NOW OR SLOWLY BE PERFECT IN ALL TOPICS....SO WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST ME....TO PRACTICE SLOWLY BUT BEING PERFECT OR FINISH ONCE ALL THEN AGAIN PRACTICE ALL TOPICS...
ramachandran : A bit of both , really. Being more thorough in what you already know is a good idea. Knowing more is a good idea too

shreyas : HOW TO IMPROVE ACCURACY IN CR/PJ/
prajnanray : through practise

neeraj : TO COMPREHEND A PASSAGE IN ONE GO AND SIMULTANEOUSLY CAPTURE THE MAIN IDEA AND THE POINTS SUPPORTING THE MAIN IDEA, I AM CONSUMING ABOUT 10 MINS FOR A 5-QUESTIONS SET.EVEN AFTER THIS I HAVE TO REVISIT THE PASSAGE FOR ANSWERING QUESTIONS.IN TOTAL 14-15 MINS TIME FOR SUCH A SET.HOW TO IMPROVE ON THIS??
ramachandran : Consistent reading will obviate the need for regression

swati : PLEASE REVERT. HOW MANY QQUESTIONS SHOULD ONE GET RIGHT/ WHAT SCORE CAN FETCH A 96-99% ILE IN VARC?
ramachandran : There is no fixed number. The candidate is advised to try questions based on the level of preparedness

chandrajit : SIR YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT INCREASING THE EYE SPAN WHILE READING ANY PASSAGE.CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS POINT A BIT?HOW SHALL I INCREASE IT?
shirish : Increasing eye span is all about enhancing ability to read maximum words at a glance. This can be improved by practice.

ankit : RULE TO FOLLOW TO ELIMINATE TWO COMPETING ANSWER CHOICES.
charlton : Careful reading and analysis. Check whether that particular choice is really answering the question.

pratik : HOW TO DEAL WITH NON-MCQ VA QUESTIONS,IS THERE ANY SHORT CUT?
prajnanray : No. Work hard

ankit : IN LAST 3-4 MINUTES TO COMPLETION OF SECTION IN TEST, MY EFFICIENCY TO ANSWER DIPS. HOW TO OVERCOME IT?
ramachandran : You might want to devote this time to refine your answers. Also, improving stamina might be a sound idea.

rosh : SIR CAN YOU PLS TELL HOW TO ANALYZE AIMCAT OR HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD BE GIVEN TO INDIVIDUAL SUBJECT..IT TAKES 2 HRS PER SUB FR ME TO ANALYZE..AND SOMETIMES EVEN MORE..PLS TELL HOW TO GET BEST OUT OF IT
charlton : Analyse the AIMCATs at the following 5 levels: 1) Easy and Medium difficulty level questions which you did not attempt. Why did you not attempt them? Was it poor time management or you did not see these questions at all? 2) Easy and Medium difficulty level questions that you got wrong - Why did you get them wrong? Is is a problem of conceptual understanding or negligence on your part. 3) Difficult and very difficult questions that you got wrong after wasting a lot of time. 4) Any other short cut method to solve the question that will reduce the overall time spent to solve the same. Multiple ways of doing the question? 5) Also analyse if you can improve your score by trying a different strategy or working with the choices. If you do this consistently, AIMCAT after AIMCAT, You will know how to capitalize on our strengths and improve on your weak areas. Go back to concepts when required.

iimabc : SIR AS ONLY 3 MONTHS LEFT WHAT SHOULD BE THE APPROACH FOR VA AND RC
philipthomas : First month -- focus on basics and adding to knowledge.Second month - revise and practice on advanced level questions. Third month -do tests identify recurrent problem areas and work on them

jusha : THE VERBAL ABILITY QUESTIONS...WHEN I DO THEM AFTER THE TEST I AM ABLE TO SOLVE THEM AND MANY A TIMES I GET THE RIGHT ANSWER BUT IN THE AIMCATS I AM NOT ABLE TO GIVE ANY CORRECT ANSWER....WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS?
shirish : Maybe the exam pressure is the reason. Keep yourself stress-free. In fact, start enjoying the process of solving questions. Before the exam, just recall the state of your mind, which you have in a normal situation. This may help. All the best.

iimabc : SIR I AM LACKING IN RC WHAT TO DO FOR THE NEXT 3 MONTHS
cherian : Read Hindu newspaper daily from now and read questions before passage while attempting RC section

shraban : IM READING THE BOOK CALLED WORD POWER MADE EASY WHICH WAS SUGGESTED BY A MAAM IN MY CENTRE, IS THIS BOOK ENOUGH FOR WORD BUILDING OR SHOULD I LOOK FOR MORE BOOKS AFTER COMPLETING THIS? IF SO I WOULD LIKE SOME SUGGESTIONS.
ramnath : A similar question on books for vocab building was answered earlier..please check the transcript

mohits : SAR I STARTED COACHING LAST WEEK IS IT POSSIBLE TO SCORE 90%ILE ABOVE
shirish : Certainly possible. I have seen people score a hing score despite joining late. Don't postpone your preparation. Keep working hard. When a particular topic is covered in the class, work upon it on that day itself. too. Regard AIMCATs as study material only. Keep taking the same AIMCATs again and again. Analyse them and learn from your mistakes. Al the best. You will score even 95 percentile. Cheers!

iimabc : WHICH WEBSITES AND NEWSPAPER TO READ FOR THE SPEED AND GRASPING KNOWLEDGE
bharat : for practice, check out magportal.com and aldaily.com

iimabc : WHEN ONE CAN EXPECT CAT NOTIFICATION
prajnanray : Mid of August

nk : HI, I AM QUITE WEAK IN PARAJUMBLES. AS THE AIMCATS THAT I HAVE TAKEN SO FAR HAVE PARAJUMBLES WITHOUT OPTIONS, I FIND IT VERY CONFUSING TO ARRIVE AT THE CORRECT ORDER. DESPITE CORRECTLY IDENTIFYING THE CONNECTED SENTENCES, I GET A WRONG ANSWER BECAUSE OF WRONGLY ARRANGING JUST ONE SENTENCE. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME HOW I SHOULD EFFECTIVELY DO THIS?
ramachandran : Please look at the solutions and find our WHERE EXACTLY you are going wrong. This approach will definitely increase your efficiency

uday : @SIRISH. NOBLE TERROR ONE HELL OF A OXYMORON ! WILL CHECK. THANKS.
shirish : Welcome.

pk : HELLO SIR ...I ALWAYS FIND 2 OPTION WHILE SOLVING RC BUT ALWAYS I CHOOSE WRONG ANSWER ...MY OTHER TWO SECTIONS ARE VERY HIGH PERCENTILE IN MOCK CAT BUT IN VERBAL LESS THAN 40%TILE ...SO PLEASE TELL ME HOW I IMPROVE VERBAL SECTION ...I SOLVE FIRST BOOK OF RC ...AND IS GRAMMAR BOOK IS HALPFULL OF TIME?
kapildixit : Your query can only be solved by understanding that your choice elimination method is not very strong still you are playing on it. Practise more test through sectional tests and improvise on choice elimination. Yes grammar rule book is helpful. Sectional Tests and Lot-2 practise material can only help improving the VA scores.

chandrajit : SIR PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT THE NMAT AND IIFT'S LANGUAGE SKILLS SECTION.HOW THEY ARE DIFFERENT FROM CAT?
krishnendu : BOTH ARE GENERALLY ON THE LOWER SIDE IN TERmS OF COMPLEXITY.QUESTIONS FROM VOCAB ARE present.

neeraj : HOW WOULD THE RC AND VA TIME STUDY MATERIAL HELP ME IN IMPROVING? I AM ASKING THIS BECAUSE I AM FOCUSING ON READING EVERYDAY AND RELYING ON IT TO IMPROVE.
shirish : Learn from your errors. Analyse your performance. you can even find out your strong and weak areas. And then you can focus on weak areas more.

uday : I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SOLVE VD QUESTIONS IN PARA-JUMBLING HOWEVER I STUMBLING IN FINDING ODD ONE OUT. ANY SITES OR BOOKS OFFER GOOD STRATEGY ON SOLVING THEM? OR CAN YOU GIVE SOME TIPS? THANKS IN ADVANCE.
shirish : If you can solve para jumbles questions correctly, you must be able to solve odd-one-out questions correctly. This is because odd-one-out questions are similar to para jumbles. In para jumbles, you are supposed to arrange sentences in a sequence. In ODD questions too, you are supposed to arrange all sentences except one. Many times we forget that the one which does not fit into the arrangement of other sentences is the odd sentence and we get the ODD question wrong.

rosh : SIR AS GK IS REQUIRED IN SOME OF EXAMS..CAN YOU TELL FROM WHERE TO PREPARE FOR THAT SIDE BY SIDE ??
krishnendu : TIME magazines that you receive will be an invaluable source for GK peparation. Keep on reading a good newspaper.

nk : HI SIR, AS ENGLISH IS SUBJECTIVE, THE ANSWER WHICH I FEEL IS STRONGLY CORRECT MAY SOUND UNCONVINCING FOR SOMEONE. HOW DO I OVERCOME SUCH KIND OF AMBIGUITY ?
philipthomas : If it is a grammar question you should know the rule, if it is a vocab question you should know the meaning, if it is an RC question you should be able to identify the data that justifies your choice

anna : SIR, I M SORRY MY QUESTION IS NOT RELATED TO RCS BUT WILL UOU PLS SUGGEST ME MIN %ILE REQUIRED TO GET A CALL FOR PWD STUDENT FROM FMS DU?
kapildixit : it varies year to year as per official webpage. It was @67%ile.

aimandachieve : HI. I AM UNABLE TO ACCESS THE ADVANCED SECTIONAL TESTS SOLUTIONS.PLEASE HELP.
krishnendu : pls contact the concerned centre.

rosh : SIR OUT OF ALL THE AIMCAT I HAVE GIVEN..WHAT I GOT TO SEE WAS I HAVEN'T CROSSED EVEN CUT OFF MARKS..WILL I SCORE GOOD IN CAT EXAM ? NO HOPES..
kapildixit : AIMCAT is just a tool to help you and evaluate your performance. it is measure yourself across the nation but nothing is absolute. You might not be performing now but if you have perseverance and your self motivation is high, try on consistently. You will start scoring well in AIMCATs too. Just keep yourself up.

jusha : HOW TO READ BEHIND THE LINES??I AM NOT ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE HIDDEN MEANINGS??HOW TO DEVELOP SUCH UNDERSTANDING????
philipthomas : DO NOT BE IN A HURRY , ALWAYS TAKE THE TIME TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE READ BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE NEXT SENTENCE OR PARAGRAPH

swati : ANY TIPS FOR SOLVING PARAJUMBLES? I HAVE AN ACCURACY OF 80% IN RC BUT THE PARAJUMBLES DRAG ME DOWN TO 50% ACCURACY IN VA.
charlton : 1) Find the intro or topic sentence. 2) FInd the conclusion or closing sentence. 3) Look for mandatory pairs based on linking words. 4) Make your own choices and see which sounds logical or coherent.

chandrajit : U MEAN TO SAY QUESTIONS COME DIRECTLY FROM VOCAB LIKE SENTENCE CORRECTION ,SYNONYMS ETC.?
charlton : No pure Vocab questions appear on the CAT. Focus on contextual reading. Solve para-based questions and RC passages.

pranav : SIR HOW TO CRACK PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE PASSAGE QUESITONS IN RCS?
shirish : Try to summarize the passage. In each para, find out the the main idea by identifying the sentence or sentences which carry the main ideas. Collect all the main ideas of all the paragraphs and summarise them. Then encapsulate the summary in one sentence, which should be the primary purpose of the passage. When you choose the option, use elimination techniques. For the primary purpose questions, most wrong options either overstate the main purpose or understate the purpose. Once you can learn how to strike a balance between overstatement and understatement, you will get most primary purpose questions correct. All the best.

dheeraj : I AM ACHIEVING AROUND 75 PERCENTILES IN AIMCATS. WHAT WOULD BE MY PERCENTILE IN ACTUAL CAT WOULD BE WITH THIS PERFORMANCE?
ramachandran : Can go up to very high 90s with focus and determination. We wish you good luck

dheeraj : I AM ACHIEVING AROUND 75 PERCENTILES IN AIMCATS. WHAT WOULD BE MY PERCENTILE IN ACTUAL CAT WOULD BE WITH THIS PERFORMANCE?
rajivagarwal : It is too early to speculate as these AIMCATS are for strategy building and to improve on your performance . Take them seriously with a thorough analysis of each question and take help pf faculty members . best wishes

xyz : WHAT ARE THE COMMON TYPES OF QUESTIONS PREVIOUSLY ASKED FROM CRITICLE REASONING?
krishnendu : Pls read the concerned material for a better understanding.

gd95 : WHAT SHOULD BE THE IDEAL WAY/PROCEDURE OF ATTEMPTING AN RC IN AIMCATS AND HOW TO PRIORITIZE THE ORDER OF RCS TO BE ATTEMPTED?
rajivagarwal : focus on familiarity of topic / ease of understanding and develop an overall perspective of the topic rather than merely reading . Learn option elimination strategy

nik : SIR IM ABLE TO SCORE ABOVE 90 PERCENTILE IN DILR AND QUANT BUT ONLY 60 PERCENTILE IN VERBAL. HOW SHOULD I DEAL WITH THIS?
philipthomas : For grammar and vocab you need to improve your knowledge, for verbal reasoning you need to improve your methods and for rc, you need to improve your skills

kush : SIR/MADAM THIS IS OUT OF TOPIC,BUT HOW TO PREPARE FOR GK FOR OTHER MANAGEMENT ENTRANCE EXAMS
krishnendu : 1. Keep on reading a good newspaper thoroughly. 2. Read the GK magazine issued by TIME.

hp : HI SIR, IN MOCK TESTS I AM ABLE TO DO ONLY TWO RCS, IN GIVEN TIME,IS THAT SUFFICIENT OR SPEED MUST BE INCREASED? I TAKE ALMOST 15 MINS FOR ONE RC, AND DO THOSE HAVING MORE NUMBER OF QUESTIONS.I AM ABLE TO DO FULL VA SECTION ALSO. AND ACCURACY LIES AROUND 85.
rajivagarwal : fewer attempts can be enhanced by reading practice by setting timer at home though its not the speed but accuracy that matters . Identify the easy passages ( familiar to read ) and focus on the main ideas rather than mechanical reading l

kanishak : SIR I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST WAY TO INCREASE OUR EFFICENCY.ALSO I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT SHOULD BE THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE FOR RC AND VERBAL SECTION(MEANS WHATS SHOULD WE DO IN PRACTICE,FROM WHERE SHOULD WE DO AND HOW MUCH TIME WE MUST GIVE ).
krishnendu : Solve the entire material set given to you.

chandrajit : NO NO SIR I AM TALKING ABOUT NMAT AND IIFT.THERE ARE DIRECT VOCAB QUESTIONS IN NMAT AND IIFT UNLIKE CAT?
prajnanray : Yes there are

saharsh : SIR,THERE ARE TIMES WHEN THE OPTIONS THEMSELVES LOOK CONFUSING. I MEAN MORE THAN ONE OPTIONS LOOK CORRECT. HOW TO APPROACH THESE KIND OF QUESTIONS ?
rajivagarwal : scan options carefully and paraphrase the original idea from passage . Even close options have tricks like vague option or far fetched option or partly correct .Practice from AIMCATS old ones as well . Best Wishes !

saivignesh : HELLO SIR. IN THE AIMCATS, I AM ABLE TO COMPLETE THE RC SECTION. BUT WHEN I REACH THE VA SECTION, I USUALLY HAVE JUST 10-12 MINS LEFT. AND I LOSE OUT ON SOME EASY VA QUESTIONS AS I AM NOT ABLE TO REACH ALL 34 QUESTIONS. MY AIMCAT MARKS IN VERBAL ARE - 56, 38, 61, 60 , 54. I WISH TO IMPROVE THIS. PLEASE ADVISE HOW I CAN TAKE MY SCORE ABOVE 70 MARKS IN VARC.
philipthomas : Try fixing a time limit to RC maybe 40 minutes and use the remaining time for VA

sachin : SIR, MY ACCURACY IN RC AND VA IS 50-50%, I FEEL THE ANSWER IS RIGHT AND MARK IT BUT EVENTUALLY IT WILL BE WRONG. HOW TO OVERCOME THIS AND PLEASE ADVISE ON INCREASING ACCURACY LEVELS IN THIS SECTION
krishnendu : Stop answering questions from FEELINGS. Have a reasonable basis for eliminating choices. Practise and thy shall have a higher accuracy.

anna : SIR WHAT U SUGGEST, RIGHT BULLET POINTS OF RCS OR NOT? HW TO DECREASE TIME IN SOLVING RCS?
rajivagarwal : focus on familiarity of topic / ease of understanding and develop an overall perspective of the topic rather than merely reading . Learn option elimination strategy practice all possible areas through booklets and aimcats . go through rc links on our website . read editorials from prominent newspapers and develop summaries of key ideas

krishna : WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION IN RC FOR HIGH ACCURACY WITHIN TIME LIMIT
rajivagarwal : practice all possible areas through booklets and aimcats . go through rc links on our website . read editorials from prominent newspapers and develop summaries of key ideas

shriniket : SIR MY SCORE IN RC AND VERBAL NEVER GONE ABOVE 40 I MEAN WHAT CAN I DO TO INCREASE IT OTHER THAN READING NEWSPAPER, ARTICLES, EDITORIALS. I MEAN WHEN I TAKE AIMCAT MY ACCURACY IS ONLY 50%, COULD YOU SUGGEST SOMETHING.
ramachandran : Reading is the best- nay, the only - solution. Please do it.

sachin : SIR, WHAT ADDITIONAL PREPARATION IS REQUIRED FROM VERBAL SECTION FOR EXAMS LIKE NMAT, SNAP AND XAT APART FROM PREPARING FOR CAT?
prajnanray : practising each question paper

deltapsi : I AM ABLE TO SOLVE GRAMMAR QUESTIONS BUT WHEN I LOOK AT A BIG RC PASSAGE I GET SCARED IN PAPER,SO SHOULD WE READ WHOLE PASSAGE VERY FAST OR SHOULD WE SKIM THROUGH IT AND THEN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS
shirish : Don't get scared. Just read the first word, then the sentence- the first one and the next. Concentrate on the text you are reading. Slowly increase your speed. Get into groove of the passage. Try summarising the main idea at the back of your mind. You may even skip a few things, you unable any more ideas. If you are enjoying reading, read the passage quickly. And then start solving the questions.

kush : I HAVE WORK EXPERIENCE OF 1.4 YEARS WITH COMMERCE GRAD WILL THAT HELP ME IN ANY COLLEGE ADMISSIONS. IF SO WHICH COLLEGES..
shirish : IN most colleges, work ex helps.

krishna : WHAT IS THE BASED WAY OF SOLVING AND GETTING VA PROBLEMS CORRECT
krishnendu : Prctise more and more. Analyse why did you go wrong when you get a question wrong.

uday : HI CAN YOU PEOPLE SUGGEST ANY GOOD BUSINESS MAGAZINES IN ADDITION TO FORBES THAT COVERS THE BUSINESS NEWS AROUND THE WORLD (BARRING OUTLOOK BUSINESS AND BW). ALSO SOME MAGAZINES THAT COVERS FINANCIAL MATTERS AROUND THE GLOBE. THANKS!
shirish : moneycontrol.com Business standard. Financial Times. Longform.com

chandrajit : SIR LET ME TELL YOU HOW I AM DOING TILL DATE.MY STRATEGY IS FIRST I TRY TO ATTEMPT AS MANY QUESTIONS AS POSSIBLE FROM RC.WHEN I SEE ONLY 15-20 MINS REMAINING I SWITCH TO THE VA PORTION.I START ATTEMPTING THE VA QUESTIONS WHICH ARE NON-MCQS.THEN IF POSSIBLE I DO ONE TWO VA QUESTIONS WHICH CARRY NEGATIVE MARKING.AM I HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?
shirish : Yes. I think so. If you are getting a decent score , you are on the right track.

sd : SIR/MAM,HOW TO ACTUALLY GOT THE CORRESPONDENCE MATERIALS OF TIME TODAY.PLS TELL ME HOW TO IMPROVE VOCABULARY AND HOW TO FOLLOW A DAILY SCHEDULE FOR VA & RC
shirish : YOu must solve at least one passage every day. Use vacab cards. Focus on roots, prefixes and suffixes. Solve vocab questions. Do extra reading.

bhcc6wa60 : SIR MY EFFICIENCY IN VERBAL SECTION IS VERY POOR,EVEN DAILY I AM SPENDING 1 HOUR FOR READING NOVELS AND NEWSPAPERS.
krishnendu : YOU SHOULD FOCUS MORE ON PRACTISING QUESTIONS. Keep reading though.

saivignesh : SIR, WOULD IT BE PRUDENT TO CONCENTRATE ON INCREASING MARKS IN EVER AIMCAT OR THE PERCENTILE?
krishnendu : percentile.

kanishak : ON WHAT TYPE OF QUESTIONS SHOULD WE FOCUS MORE ON FRO OTHER EXAMS LIKE NMAT,SNAP ETC OTHER THAN CAT?
ramachandran : Please broad-base your preparation and become as strong as you possibly can in all areas in English language as this will stand you in good stead in a variety of exams

yes2016 : THANK YOU SIR. I HAVE EVEN BEEN SUGGESTED THAT I SHOULD CONSIDER THIS AS MY LAST CAT ATTEMPT. IF NEED BE FROM NEXT YEAR I SHOULD FOCUS ON GMAT DUE TO MY WORK EX ON THE HIGHER SIDE?
shirish : Keep all your options open. ALl the best.

chandrajit : HOW MANY SHOULD I ATTEMPT FROM VA & RC CORRECTLY IN ORDER TO SCORE MORE THAN 95 PERCENTILE IN THAT SECTION ON AN AVERAGE?
krishnendu : No such number can be predicted. However, try to do 25 plus questions with 70 percent accuracy.

pranav : SHIRISH SIR! PLEASE HELP ME OUT WITH THIS. I SEE A HUGE RC WITH OVER 1000 WORDS BUT ONLY 3 QUESTIONS BEING ASKED. HOW DO I MANAGE SUCH RC'S ? ALSO ON AN AVERAGE I AM TAKING AROUND 14-15 MINUTES FOR A 6 QUESTIONED RC. HOW DO I REDUCE IT TO 12-13 MINUTES?
shirish : The length passage alone does not decide the difficulty. Sometimes, even a one hundred-word passage which has a very complex topic and writing can take more time than a thousand-word passage. You may do some intelligent skipping in the case of long passages. Subordinate ideas such as long examples or the ideas that are redundant can be skipped. You reduce your time of solving questions by analysing your performance. After taking exercises or AIMCATs, take them again and even if you have got questions correct and try to find out quicker ways of solving the same questions. All the best. This will certainly improve your efficiency. Cheers!

saivignesh : SIR, WHAT ADDITIONAL PREPARATIONS FOR XAT ARE REQUIRED FOR THE VERBAL SECTION AS IT SEEMS TO BE TOUGHER THAN CAT LEVEL VARC QUESTIONS?
rajivagarwal : XAT focuses more on critical reasoning ( argument based questions ) and questions are more application based . Go through past xat papers ( we have links on out website ) sound logic is important for xat

anmolbakshi : WHILE READING THE NEWS SHOULD I FOCUS ON THE BUSINESS SIDE OR GENERAL NEWS?AND DO I REALLY NEED TO READ THE HARD CORE BUSINESS NEWS FROM ECONOMIC TIMES? WOULD IT HELP?
krishnendu : It wont go waste but do read natioal, international and editorial pages from a good newspaper also.

dnrich : ARE THERE ANY TIPS ON JUDGING THE DIFFICULTY OF A PASSAGE?
prajnanray : practise

amit : WHILE SELECTING A RC SET HOW DO WE UNDERSTAND THAT THE ONE WE ARE GOING TO ATTEMPT IS AN EASY RC SET
ramachandran : Reading regularly will help you develop this "feel"

adi : CAN YOU GIVE ME A SET OF STEPS I CAN FOLLOW TO ANSWER PARA REARRANGEMENT TYPE QUESTIONS..
shirish : concentrate on the flow of ideas. Pick up linking words and create pairs. Find out the intro sentence. Try to get the whole story which should be convincing.

saivignesh : SIR, IS THERE ANY CHANCE OF THE QUESTION DISTRIBUTION ( 24 RC AND 10 VA ) CHANGING IN THE PAPERS?
rajivagarwal : the most permanent thing about cat is change so just practice all probable varieties covered in our course and develop accuracy in all areas .best wishes

jusha : SIR I READ FROM INTERNET,NOVEL,CUE CARD EACH DAY...I GET AROUND 50-60 NEW WORDS....EACH DAY THE SAME THING HAPPENS...I READ THE MEANING BUT THEN I FORGET....HOW TO BRING THESE WORDS IN "MY" VOCAB..????I AM NOT ABLE TO THINK ONLY THAT MEANING OF A SIMPLE LINE CAN HAVE SUCH DEPTH??HOW TO DEVELOP THE UNDERSTANDING??
ramachandran : Newly acquired words DO slip out of our minds. Please be at it.

amit : SIR FOR VA CAN U PLS SUGGEST SOME MATERIAL APART FROM THE REGULAR TIME MATERIAL
rajivagarwal : the material is enough and sufficient .Solve old AIMCATS which are closer to actual exam and take our course material thoroughly including sectional tests .

dnrich : WOULD IT BE BETTER TO SCAN THROUGH THE QUESTIONS FIRST BEFORE READING THE PASSAGE?
prajnanray : yeah

pranav : THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR ANSERS SHIRISH SIR. :)
shirish : You are always welcome, Pranav.

deeprc2301 : SIR I USED TO SCORE 20 -25 MARKS IN AIMCAT WHEN I USED TO ATTEMPT AROUND 12 15 QUESTIONS ..BUT IN THE LAST AIMCAT17 I HAD ATTEMPTED ONLY 10 RCS ...OUT OF WHICH 9 WERE RIGHT..SO I THE SCORE 36....HO I SHOULD I LOOK AT THIS ? WHAT SHOULD BE STRATEGY FOR EXAM ? FOR THIS I EVRYDAY READ ARTICLES ONLY ..BUT I HAVE NOT DONE OUR TIME MATERIAL RC BOOK YET..HOW SSHOULD I MOVE AHEAD ..PLS GUIDE ME..I CAN MANAGE A GOOD SCORE IN QUANT AND DILR...I JUST NEED HELP IN THIS SECTION .
shirish : Just one AIMCAT can not decide your future. SO first, don't fret. too. Regard AIMCATs as study material only. Keep taking the same AIMCATs again and again. Analyse them and learn from your mistakes. You will score very well in the exam. All the best. Cheers!

aravind : HI, I AM A WORKING GRADUATE. I CAN SPEND TIME TO PREPARE ONLY ON WEEKENDS. IS IT ENOUGH? ALSO, HOW TO KNOW THE TONES IN RC?
shirish : It may be enough. Use the entire time that you get. Look at the material or the VA page of your home page for RC tones. You can even consult your faculty member for the same.

wizard : A LITTLE OFF TOPIC QUESTION.WHAT COMPETITIVE EXAMS SHOULD I WRITE WITH WHICH I CAN AIM FOR TOP 50 MBA COLLEGES??
rajivagarwal : cat of course nmat / iift / xat and snap

amit : SIR IF IN CASE BY READING FIRST FEW LINES OF R
ramachandran : Please go ahead

saivignesh : THANK YOU SIR(S)!:)
shirish : Welcome.

chandrajit : SOMETIMES I FIND THE CRITICAL REASONING VERY DIFFICULT LIKE THE ASSUMPTIONS AND CONCLUSIONS QUESTIONS.CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME OUT?HOW MANY QUESTIONS COME FROM THIS SECTION ON AN AVERAGE AS HAPPENED IN THE PREVIOUS YEARS'S QUESTIONS?
krishnendu : CR questions are very important from RC perspective also. They have been asked as individual questions as well. So suggest pls practise them rigorously.

amit : SIR IF IN CASE WE DONT GET THE RC BY READING FIRST FEW LINES OF THE RC THEN HOW TO GO ABOUT SELECTING THE RC
shirish : Read the passage completely.

amit : SIR IS THERE ANY CHANCE OF GETTING AN EQUAL NO. OF QUESTIONS IN BOTH RC AND VA - AS WE HAVE SEEN VA QUESTIONS ARE ALWAYS LESS IN NO. THAN THE RC QUESTIONS
shirish : I don't think so. RCs should be more.

T.I.M.E
