lakshmymenon : You have to practise reading with a timer. Choose a newspaper editorial or any article (not a news article but something where the author expresses their opinion) of about 500-600 words. Do a word count, and set the timer at a reading speed of 200-250 words per minute. You have to finish reading the articleby the time the timer goes. Then, without looking at the article, try to write the essence of the article in 1 sentence. Initially it may not be possible, but this will force you to start focussing on the article while reading fast. Also, you can take up another exercise with a stopwatch. Choose an article on a topic you find difficult (not more than 1000 words). Start reading. After every 3-4 sentences, make a mental summary of what you read so far, then continue reading. Once you finish, sum up the article in 1 sentence. Also check the time you took. Try to improve the speed with each reading and get it to 250-300 wpm.
