Chat on preparation tips for CAT!
(Chat Transcript)

chandler : WHAT TO PREPARE IN VA OTHER THAN RC AND PARAJUMBLES? BECAUSE CAT 15 HAD MAXIMUM NO OF QUESTIONS ON THESE TWO TOPICS ONLY
kapilbhandari : Firstly you can predict CAT 100%. So you should be prepared with all areas. Secondly, CR and OMO Qs were also there last year.

rj : AS THERE IS NO PATTERN CHANGE..AS PER CAT 2016 NOTIFICATION, AND ITS ABT 120DAYS TO GO.. CAN ONE EXPECT A TOUGHER PAPER ON D-DAY??
ankur : your assumption that there is no pattern change could be wrong. the number of questions in each section could change since that is not specified. additionally the number of non-mcqs could go up or down since that too is not specified. don't expect a tougher or easier paper. just go with an open mind to write the paper.

mravi : HOW DO I MANAGE TIME WHEN THE CALCULATIONS IN DI ARE REALLY EXTENSIVE?
vinnayraj : try to make wise use of the online calculator provided...also analyze the data thoroughly, observe the questions and prioritize what to calculate..sometimes the questions dont require you to process the entire data displayed..

xyz : GENERALLY DOES CAT RELEASE ANOTHER NOTIFICATION LITTLE LATER PROVIDING MORE DETAILS ABOUT EXAM, PATTERN ETC?
rajeshsaraf : You may expect not exactly any notification but some sort of a sample paper later on...not guaranteed though

mravi : IS IT BETTER TO ATTEMPT DI OR LR FIRST IN THE DI LR SECTION? ALSO, IDEALLY HOW MANY QUESTIONS OUT OF 32 SHOULD BE COMPLETED
kapilbhandari : That will depend on your comfort level. Ideally you should scan the section once and attempt all doable sets first, irrespective of the area. Secondly we are not sure of 32 Qs this time. Wait for the tutorial for that.

aditya : AM A CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT, AGE 24, GENERAL CATEGORY.. WOULD U SUGGEST ME TO TAKE UP CAT AT 24. I HAVE FEW MONTHS OF WORK EX AND 3 YEARS OF INTERNSHIP FOR CA COURSE
rajeshsaraf : You can write CAT at any age. Try to examine ur strengths n weaknesses. AGE should not be a factor rather ur level of preparedness is important

rajesh : APART FROM CAT WHICH EXAMS SHOULD WE WRITE?
vinnayraj : you can consider writing XAT,IIFT,SNAP,NMAT,CMAT etc..

viswash : I HAVE A WORK EXPERIENCE OF 3 PLUS YEARS AND STILL WORKING AND I HAVE A MBA DEGREE FROM A NORMAL COLLEGE. IS THIS A RIGHT OPTION TO OPT FOR MBA AGAIN FROM A REPUTED B-SCHOOL. CAN YOU PLEASE ASSIST?
ankur : i am not sure what you mean by "normal" college. assuming that your college was not in the recommended list of colleges provided by us, going for a second MBA is quite a sensible option since it is a good MBA that gives you good returns in the job market, instead of just an MBA.

rajesh : WHAT GOOD COLLEGES ACCEPT SNAP MARKS?
rajeshsaraf : SIBM. SCMHRD. SITM SIOM to name a few

rajesh : I DID NOT START MY PREPARATION TILL NOW, CAN I START NOW AND GET ADMISSION INTO GOOD COLLEGE
shivabhaskaran : If u plan and work meticulously atleast six hours a day , you can surely make into a good b-school

kushagr : HELLO...I HAVE HEARD THAT ACCURACY IS IMPORTANT FOR A GOOD INSTITUTE. WHAT I WANTED TO CONFIRM IS THAT DOES ACCURACY OVERPOWERS OVERALL SCORE? I.E. CAN A PERSON WITH LESS OVERALL SCORE BUT HIGHER ACCURACY GET A HIGHER RANK THAN A PERSON WITH HIGHER OVERALL SCORE BUT LESS ACCURACY?
rajeshsaraf : It os OVERALL MARKS which matters a lot. TRY TO maximize ur score. Anywau, whenever u are writing the exam, ur objective any point of time is to attempt with 100% accuracy

kumar : IS THERE ANY ADVANTAGE OR DISADADVANTAGE OF REGISTRATING CAT A LITTLE LATER(AFTER AUG 15) ?
vinnayraj : as the allocation of the centers and the slot is done randomly and not on a first come first serve basis,it should not really make any difference when you apply...

xyz : IS THE ON SCREAN CALCULATER PROVIDED IN AIMCATS SIMILAR TO THE ONE IN ACTUAL CAT?
kapilbhandari : Yes

moit : WHAT ARE THE MAIN AREAS IN LOGICAL REASONING TO PREPARE FOR? LIKE THE IMPORTANT CHAPSTERS?
vinnayraj : generally the questions are based on seating arrangements(both linear and circular, queues, floors of builidings etc...),distribution based puzzles, family tree, binary logic..

rahul : MAM/SIR MY READING SPEED IS LOW.I SOLVE 1 RC IN 15 MINUTES WITH AN ACCURACY OF 70-75.I HAVE COMPLETED RC BOOKLET2.SHOULD I START ONLINE INTERMEDIATE TEST.I AM IN A CONFUSION AS THERE ARE 3 RC TO BE SOLVED IN 30 MIN. AND I KNOW THAT ONLY 2 ARE POSSIBLE FOR ME.WHAT SHOULD I DO?
satyaprakash : First of all, read a lot of articles on the areas that are tested in CAT- sociology, feminism, business & economics, science & technology, abstract areas, and philosophy. It is imperative for you to not get overawed by the content of a passage. Then, you need to work on understanding the author's point of view & his/her intention behind writing the passage. Try and figure those out in every single passage you read from now on. Read as per my recommendations for a week and then go on to the intermediate level tests. Analyse your performance & learn from your mistakes. All the very best!

kumar : DO I NEED TO STUDY LOGICAL REASONING 2 BOOK FOR CAT?
kapilbhandari : You should solve as many sets as possible. It will build your confidence.

nymisha : HELLO SIR ,I'M UNABLE TO COMPREHEND GAMES AND TOURNAMENTS AND REASONING BASED - DI QUESTIONS. I TRIED LOOKING FOR HELP ONLINE , BUT MY CONCEPTS AREN'T CLEAR. I'M WORKING , SO THE DOUBT SESSIONS TIMINGS AREN'T SUITABLE EITHER. CAN I CONTACT ANY OF THE FACULTY OFFLINE FOR DOUBTS TO GET THEM CLEARED IN PERSON?
vinnayraj : games and tournaments involve mainly two types of tournaments, knockout and round robin..they are not very difficult..it is ideal if you could meet a faculty or your mentor in person and clarify the doubts and get a detailed explanation of the concepts..

akash : ON AN AVERAGE, HOW MANY QUESTIONS CAN ONE SUCCESSFULLY ATTEMPT TO SECURE 99+ PERCENTILE IN CAT?
rajeshsaraf : In CAT 2015, a net score of 55% was 99 percentile +. A net score of 75%marks was 100 percentile !!

ankit_95 : IS IT A GOOD STRATEGY TO ONLY SOLVE RC QUESTIONS IF MY ACCURACY IS NOT GOOD IN VA
ankur : no this is not a good idea. if the paper has tough RCs and easy VA questions, then your strategy can backfire. suggest that you develop confidence by going for easy VA questions first, then moderately tough and then the toughest sets. that step by step method will improve your abilities, over a period of time.

mbaaspirant : FEELING VERY DEMORALISED
kapilbhandari : What's your concern.

vg : SIR, MOST OF THE TIME MY TITA QUESTIONS GO WRONG. HOW CAN I IMPROVE?
satyaprakash : Find out why you are going wrong- lack of knowledge, improper application or incorrect assumptions. Once you know the why, the how will become clear to you. May the force be with you!

sahiba : HLW SIR.. ONLY 3 MONTHS LEFT FOR XAM.. WHRNEVR I DO THE QUANT AND DI I ALWAYS USE SOLUTION BOOKLET SO WHAT CAN I DO??
shivabhaskaran : Practise all problems from SM and revise the same on more time, then u will gain confidence which will help u to crack questions without using solution book.

shreyas : IS READING T.I.M.E MAGAZINES ENOUGH FOR GK PREP OF IIFT EXAM?
kapilbhandari : Yes it is. However that only, might not be a very good call.

vg : SIR HOW IMPORTANT IS CUBES AS A CHAPTER IMPORTANT FOR CAT?
rajeshsaraf : Very important..all the concepts like cutting of cubes, folding of flaps to obtain cube, colouring of cubes, dice related problems

moit : WILL THERE BE ANY REVISION CLASSES BEFORE THE CAT ?
kapilbhandari : Yes we have revision workshops before CAT. If you need anything individually, then approach your centre.

rj : WOULD FEW MONTHS OF WORK EXPERIENCE OR NO WORK EXPERIENCE( DUE TO DELAY DATE OF JOINING) WILL HAMPER MY SELECTIONS IN IIMS, IF I'M ABLE TO SCORE A DECENT PERCENTILE?
rajeshsaraf : Work experience is a secondary issue. The primary issue is written score. Everything depends on it

viswash : HELLO.(A) HOW WILL YOU RATE ARMY INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT "KOLKATA AND NOIDA" , UNIVERSITY OF HYDERABAD.
ankur : We do not rate AIM Noida. We rate AIM Kolkata in the "others" category. HCU is rated in BB category. For more details please check - http://www.time4education.com/CAT-MBA/List_of_B-Schools.aspx

kumar : HOW SHOULD I START PREP FOR QA FROM NOW AND HOW MANY HOURS SHOULD I FOCUS ON IT AND STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED FROM NOW ONWARDS?
kapilbhandari : You should first revise all the topics which have been covered in your classes. Make sure you solve all Qs from SMs and then move to online sectional tests. Of course, AIMCATs should not be missed. More importantly the analysis part.

kushagr : SHOULD BE ANSWER ALL TITA QUESTIONS EVEN IF WE HAVE TO MAKE A WILD GUESS BCOZ THEY DON'T CARRY NEGATIVE MARKS?
vinnayraj : try to solve as many as you can and if you are unable to solve a few(caught between two options) or there is no time towards the end of the sectional time, you can mark the answer randomly as they dont carry negative marks..

rajesh : WHAT IS YOUR ANALYSIS OF CAT 2016 POSSIBLE PATTERN?
asim : Rajesh, please check the following link http://www.time4education.com/cat-mba/cat2016_pattern_possibilities.aspx

sahiba : I ALRADY DONE MY ALL BOOKLET ??
thomas : do the online tests and the SAMCATS NOW.

moit : SIR WHAT SHOULD BE THE STRATEGY TO BUILD A GOOD HAND IN VERBAL SECTION
satyaprakash : Prepare according to the 5 areas- R.C., Grammar, Vocabulary, Usage & Reasoning. Once you have some level of proficiency in them, begin working according to question types. Keep in mind that CAT changes its fur all the time, and hence, don't approach it with a fixed mindset. Also, spend enough time on analysing your AIMCAT performances. Build on your strengths & try to avoid making the same mistakes over & over again. Do well!

rajesh : HOW MUCH PERCENTAGE IS REQUIRED IN GRADUATION TO WRITE CAT, I AM SC CATEGORY PERSON?
ramnath : 45% is the minimum for SC category applicants

vg : WHAT ALL TOPICS SHOULD I FOCUS ON FOR NMAT DILR?
thomas : IT IS MORE OF CALCULATION BASED DI. WORK ON YOUR SPEED.

roy : SIR, HOW SAMCAT`S DIFFER FROM AIMCAT`S??
rajeshsaraf : Self Administered MOCK CAT (SAMCAT) dont give percentile. You can write from anywhere at any point of time

viswash : I AM A WORKING PROFESSIONAL.
ankur : OK. So what is you question?

neethu : SIR IT IS OUT OF TOPIC BUT I WANNA KNOW,SIR,AFTER GETTING 95+% IN IIFT OR NMAT OR SOME OTHR ENTRANCE EXAM OR AFTER GETTING SELECTD IN THOSE UNIVERSITIES DO V HAVE TO PAY LACS OF FEE OR IS IT A FREE SEAT BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN FEE IN LACS BY BROWSING..
thomas : you will need to pay the fee. the fee is in lakhs as you have said.

akash : ARE THE FLASH CARDS PROVIDED FOR VOCAB SUFFICIENT FOR CAT / IF NOT, WHAT IS THE BEST SOURCE FOR IMPROVING VOCAB RELEVANT TO CAT?
ankur : the cards are only a tool to check how much you know/remember. they are not sufficient. Read a lot and check the meanings of tough words from a good dictionary. Once you do that, please read the passage again. This will build good reading practice as well as give you good command over words. The CAT is looking at good command of reading, not just the knowledge of lots of words.

kj : SIR NOW WITH OUR PREPARATION IN THE LAST GEAR..HOW SHOULD WE DIVIDE OUR DAY TO PREPARE ALL THE SECTIONS ?
vinnayraj : as equally as possible and try to study atleast 5 to 6 hours daily..also try to solve atleast one di set,one lr and one rc passage daily...and solve quant questions from different areas..and try to sit for stretches of 3 hour duration when you study..

abhi : IS IT NECESSARY TO SOLVE ALL THE QUESTIONS GIVEN IN THE EXERCISES TO UNDERSTAND ANY TOPIC?
thomas : IT would help if you solve all of them. solving most should give you a good understanding of the topic.

viswash : I AM A WORKING PROFESSIONAL. (A)HOW MANY HOURS MINIMUM IS REQUIRED TO PREPARE FROM NOW. (B)ANY IMPORTANT AND USEFUL TIP FOR ALL THE WORKING PROFESSIONAL. PLEASE ASSIST.
vinnayraj : a minimum of 3 to 4 hours a day as there are only a few months left..also make maximum use of weekends, holidays and leaves...revise the concepts, take and analyze every aimcat thoroughly and religiously and work on your test taking skills..if you havent covered any concept learn the fundamentals of the same asap..

anony123 : ARE SOME SECTIONAL TESTS FROM THE ADVANCED LEVEL ON A SLIGHTLY EASIER DIFFICULTY LEVEL?
ramnath : Advanced sectional tests contain the entire section of each area as seen in the CAT exam. The level of these tests may vary from test to test in order to expose the students to different possible variations.

vg : WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE FOR NMAT VOCAB?
ankur : look at the pattern of NMAT and practice similar questions from your material. do the voab material (especially the ebook on the student homepage) to improve vocab. Read a lot and check the meanings of tough words from a good dictionary. Once you do that, please read the passage again. This will build good reading practice as well as give you good command over words.

kumar : WHAT OTHER EXAMS SHOULD I APPLY OTHER THAN CAT?
thomas : XAT, NMAT,IIFT,SNAP.

nikgarg : SIR, I HAVE 4 YRS WORKING EXP AND NOW LOOKING FOR MBA. WHICH EXAM SHOULD I GIVE GMAT OR CAT? ALS WHAT SLD I DO 2 YRS MBA OR 1 YR MBA? PLEASE GUIDE...
ankur : i suggest you go for both the exams. you are eligible for a few colleges that are offering executive programs (like ISB and Great Lakes). You are also eligible for the normal MBA through CAT. You are perhaps not eligible for the PGP-Executive of the IIMs (please check their eligibility on their websites). GMAT is a very good option for even normal aspirants, since many bschools like SPJAIN and IMT are now accepting these scores in addition to CAT and XAT scores. so aspirants increase their chance of getting a good score and thus getting a good call.

mbaaspirant : I DID SOME GOOD LEVEL PUZZLE QUESTIONS TODAY AND IT TOOK 20-25 MINS PER QUESTION.. THEN HOW WOULD I DO 6-7 SETS OF DI-LR SECTION? :(
thomas : if the sets are difficult, even if you do 3-4 sets, you can expect more than 90 percentile.

moit : SIR HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD ONE GIVE IN EACH SECTION IN A DAY TO PREPARE WELL FOR THE EXAM.? HOW MANY HOURS TO PUT IN?
vinnayraj : as equally as possible and try to study atleast 5 to 6 hours daily..also try to solve atleast one di set,one lr and one rc passage daily...and solve quant questions from different areas..and try to sit for stretches of 3 hour duration when you study..

jack : SIR MY PROBLEM IS WITH VARC SECTION ESPECIALLY IN RC...IM ABLE TO SOLVE RC OF MEDIUM LEVEL ALSO BUT WHEN IT COMES TO DIFFICULT LEVEL RC IM NOT ABLE TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS...PLEASE SUGGEST ME WHAT TO DO??
satyaprakash : A similar question has been answered. Read the chat transcript. Plus, make sure that you are able to identify the question type as the answer depends on it. Familiarise yourself with the various question types. If you do that diligently, you will no longer be Jack, but rather, a Master.

aravind : HI, AM A WORKING PROFESSIONAL WITH 2+YRS OF EXPERIENCE. OFFICE TIMINGS AND MY JOURNEY TAKES 12-13HRS PER DAY, ATTENDING CLASSES 2HRS EVERY DAY, SO IS IT POSSIBLE TO TACKLE CAT THIS YEAR, WITH PROVIDING 1HR PER WEEKDAY AND 6-8HRS PER WEEKENDS(FROM THIS MONTH). IS THIS THE SAME PREPARATION FOR OMETS TOO? COULD YOU PLS SUGGEST A PLAN ON HOW TO PROCEED.
ankur : yes the plan can work. you need to put in your best effort in that time. it is not the amount of time but the quality of your hard work that will matter more. start with basics. look at basic study material like books. revise concepts. keep doing small tests in the middle to check your learning. take mock regularly. move to sectional tests on the student homepage after that. finally do/revise all mock CATs that we provide. same for the OMETs. doable! best of luck!

abhijain : THIS IS MY BROTHER'S QUERY. HE IS IN B.COM FINAL YEAR. HIS AGGREGATE TILL YET IS 49.8% IN B.COM. 10TH-92.8%, 12TH-93.2%. IF HE MANAGES TO GET THE GRADUATION AGGREGATE TO UPTO 55%, THEN IS THERE ANY CHANCE FOR HIM TO GET INTO THE TOP 10 B SCHOOLS AFTER SCORING HIGH PERCENTILE IN CAT 2017? IF YES, THEN WHAT MINIMUM PERCENTILE HE SHOULD SCORE TO GET THE GOAL ACCOMPLISHED.
vinnayraj : there are chances..if he belongs to the general category a 98+ percentile or even higher to be on the safer side..

shekhar : HI SIR, I AM GOOD IN QUANT AND DI BUT VERY POOR IN ENGLISH. ANY TIPS TO HAVE A GRIP ON THE SUBJECT.
satyaprakash : You HAVE to prepare in a holistic manner to do well in the verbal section. You need to focus on the 5 areas mentioned in a previous answer. And yes, practise, practise & then practise some more. Do not answer questions unless you are certain that you are right. As far as possible, you should not rely on any 'gut feeling'.

jack : SIR HOW TO CHECK WHETHER MY QUESTION IS ANSWERED OR NOT??
satyaprakash : Read the chat transcript carefully. For the record, your question has been answered.

hycb6a739 : : SIR IM PREPARING FOR ONLY RURAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES LIKE IRMA,XIMB,IIM-A(ABM),IIM-L .MOST PREFERRED IRMA.SO HOW MUCH %EL I REQUIRED AND HOW CAN PREPARE,I CAN PUT 10 TO12 HRS SO PLEASE SUGGEST ME
kapilbhandari : All the B-Schools you have mentioned are good ones. If you can prepare for 10-12 hours daily, then you should try your best and score as high as you can. Your target should be nothing less than 95 %tile, if you belong to GC.

sahiba : IF I GIVE ONLNE TEST OF RC THEN I NOY GOT GOOD MARKS IF I GIVE OFLNE I GOT GOOD MARKS SO WHAT CAN I DO?
shivabhaskaran : Pracrise more passages online then u will get better score, it will some time to adapt to the online medium as we are used only to offline medium

shekhar : HELLO SIR, WITH FOUR MONTHS TIME AND BASICS DONE ONCE, WHAT SHOULD BE THE PLAN FOR PREPARATION
kapilbhandari : Revise, solve as many Qs as you can. Cover online material and attempt AIMCATs and SAMCATs, with thorough analysis.

anony123 : ANY SUGGESTIONS/TIPS ON HOW TO GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL DIFFICULTY SPECIALLY FOR QUANT?
kapilbhandari : If you have solved the SMs and initial online tests, then go for intermediate and advance level ones.

moit : WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHAPTERS FOR THE QUANT SECTION?
kapilbhandari : All chapters are important. We are getting balanced papers now. So prepare all.

kj : SIR I TEND TO TAKE A LOT OF TIME WHILE SOLVING DILR..PLS SUGGEST WHAT TO DO?
thomas : your speed will improve only with practice. try to solve as many qns as you can.

roy : SIR, THEN WHAT IS THE NEED TO GIVE SAMCATS WHEN I DIDN`T GET TO KNOW WHERE I STAND IN ALL INDIA??
thomas : you can always use that as practice. we will be giving you average, good and excellent scores for each samcat later.

hycb6a739 : SIR HOW MUCH %EL REQUIRED TO GET ADMISSION IN IRMA AS SC- CATEGORY
asim : Last year it was 45 percentile in CAT and 8.63 marks out of 40 in issues of social concern exam.

xyz : TRADITIONALLY, SNAP IS HELD BEFORE OR AFTER CAT? AND IF BEFORE, HOW SHOULD ONE STRATEGIZE SINCE EVEN IIFT IS BEFORE CAT? I MEAN HOW MUCH TO CONSUNTRATE ON OMETS?
ankur : snap is on 20th Dec. IIFT is before CAT. kindly focus on the GK section for both exams by going through a good newspaper and our GK magazine. doing the OMETs for IIFT can be done in November. the OMETs for SNAP can be done after CAT. preparation is similar so not much change except GK.

kj : SIR WHAT PERCENTILE IN AIMCATS CAN ENSURE A 99+ILE IN CAT?
thomas : if you are consistently above 95, you have a very good chance of 99+.

pratik : I AM VERY POOR IN QUANT LR?EXACTLY WHERE I AM GOING WRONG?
satyaprakash : Well, you need to figure out why you are answering the questions incorrectly. Work on calculating quickly. Sit with a faculty member & seek help.

abhi : ARE THE QUESTIONS OF NMAT EXAM ALWAYS EASY FOR ALL 3 SECTIONS, AS COMPARED TO CAT?
thomas : it is easier but NMAT is more of a speed test. the time available per qns is much less than in CAT.

aaa : I DON'T FIND MY RC AND VA IMPROVING AT ALL. I USED TO THINK OF ENGLISH AS MY STRONG POINT BEFORE GIVING THE MOCKS. I'VE BEEN PRACTICING REGULARLY ALSO. STILL NOT IMPROVING. PLEASE SUGGEST SOMETHING
satyaprakash : You are not alone, kid. Almost everyone thinks that English is easy. It isn't. You have been TAKING the AIMCATs. We have been GIVING them to you. Stop practicing & begin practising. Work on R.C. & R.C. related questions such as parajumbles, paracompletion, summary, odd-sentence-out, critical reasoning & the like. Familiarise yourself with the process involved in tackling each question type. And do not lose sight of preparing as per the areas tested in CAT. If you prepare diligently, your standing will surely shoot up.

mbaaspirant : SIR I AM DOING PUZZLES FROM THE BOOK "BSC MAGICAL BOOK ON PUZZLES" . IS THIS BOOK FINE? I CAN'T FIND ANY OTHER GOOD SOURCE FOR PUZZLES.
vinnayraj : any mental workout including solving sudoku is good for improving reasoning abilities..try to solve the online sectional tests and solve problems from the second lot of materials given..

vineeth : SIR WHAT ARE THE TOP B SCHOOLS WITH LOW FEES STRUCTURE APART FROM FMS & JBIMS?
thomas : ALL OTHER TOP INSTITUTES DO CHARGE MORE THAN 5 LACS. THESE ARE THE ONLY TOP TWO WITH LOW FEES.

rahul : SIR WHAT SHOULD BE THE STRATEGY FOR PREPARATION NOW AS THE SYLLABUS IN MY BATCH IS COMPLETED. I HAVE THE FULL DAY TO PREPARE NOW AND HOW MUCH MINIMUM HOURS DO I NEED TO PUT FROM NOW. SENIORS SAY TO PUT YOUR FULL EFFORTS. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT DOES THAT MEAN.CAN YOU PLEASE TELL A PROPER APPROACH
gouri : work on the study material provided to you...strengthen basic concepts...put in as many hours as are required to cover all concepts covered in class.

abhijain : THIS IS MY BROTHER'S QUERY. HE IS IN B.COM FINAL YEAR. HIS AGGREGATE TILL YET IS 49.8% IN BCOM. 10TH-92.8%, 12TH-93.2%. IF HE MANAGES TO GET THE GRADUATION AGGREGATE TO UPTO 55%, THEN IS THERE ANY CHANCE FOR HIM TO GET INTO THE TOP 10 B SCHOOLS AFTER SCORING HIGH PERCENTILE IN CAT 2017? IF YES, THEN WHAT MINIMUM PERCENTILE HE SHOULD SCORE TO GET THE GOAL ACCOMPLISHED
kapilbhandari : Yes he can, if he score more than 50% in graduation. Assuming that he is from general category, so he should aim for 99.5+ for top 10 B-schools.

roy : OK, THANK YOU RAJESH SIR & THOMAS SIR.
thomas : you are welcome.

shekhar : THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION, BUT DESPITE GOING THROUGH RC BOOK AND FEW PASSAGES, I AM NOT ABLE TO FIGURE OUT CORRECT ANSWER IN PRACTICE EXERCISE AS WELL AS EXAMS. ALL ANSWERS LOOK SIMILAR AND CONFUSED.THE VA & RC PART IS THE THREATENING ONE FOR ME.
satyaprakash : No two answers are ever the same. If there is any ambiguity in your mind, then you need to retrace your steps & figure out where is it that you are faltering. If you are unable to do it on your own, meet a faculty member & seek help.

dexter : HOW DO I STRUCTURE MY PREPARATION FOR VERBAL AND RC FOR THE NEXT 4 MONTHS IF IT IS A SUBJECT I"M RELATIVELY WEAK IN
satyaprakash : Many similar questions have already been answered, Dexter. Please read the chat transcript. And don't come after me!

muks : SIR WHEN IT COMES TO ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS IN THE VERBAL SECTION, ESPECIALLY THE PARA JUMBLES, I AM NOT 100% CONFIDENT. HOW TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEM?
gouri : please practise para jumbles with options...you will feel more confident once the theory part is clear.

kj : SIR I AM FEELING A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED....I AM NOT ABLE TO MEET MY TIMETABLE TARGETS SOMETIMES...CAN YOU SUGGEST SOMETHING TO OVERCOME THIS?
vinnayraj : even if you are not able to meet your target but you are consistently preparing on a daily basis and working on the fundamentals it should be fine..make maximum use of weekends, holidays and free days...

hycb6a739 : SIR PLEASE REPLY TO ME HOW MUCH %EL REQUIRED TO GET ADMISSION IN IRMA AS SC-
shivabhaskaran : Initially u need to get cat or xat percentile of 65 plus then they have their own exam

aspirant : HELLO SIR. PLEASE SUGGEST THE TOPICS WHICH ARE NEEDED TO BE COMPLETED FIRST IN QUANTS!
kapilbhandari : Nothing like that. You should aim for all topics and finish them. However some topics are pre requisites for others, like ERPV

kalpesh : SIR IN MAKING PARAGRAPHS FROM GIVEN SENTENCES I ALWAYS END UP GETTING WRONG ANSWERS .HOW SHOULD I IMPROVE THIS?
ankur : look at each question and see WHY you made that mistake. mistake analysis will help reduce their number in subsequent attempts.

anony123 : AT THIS STAGE WOULD YOU SUGGEST TAKING ONE SECTIONAL TEST EVERYDAY?
thomas : when you have finished the basics .

vineeth : ABOVE 5 LAKHS IS OK SIR CAN YOU LIST TOP COLLEGES WITH FEES LESS THAN 10 LAKHS FOR THE COMPLETE COURSE APART FROM FMS & JBIMS
shivabhaskaran : IIMs started recently, IIT's, NIT's , Bits Pilani TISS ( HR program), IRMA

boson : SIR, LAST AIMCAT DATE IS 20TH NOV & CAT IS ON 4TH DEC.WILL AIMCAT SECHEDULE CHANGE ?
thomas : there is IIFT on 27th november. so we are not looking at any change.

dexter : HOW DO YOU COMPARE THE DIFFICULTY OF AIMCATS TO ACTUAL CATS
vinnayraj : generally aimcats are of a slightly higher level difficulty compared to cat..many of them or of comparable difficulty level and a few are easier..as there are multiple tests they give you ample opportunities to help you perform well in tests of varied levels of difficulty..

vineeth : ALSO I AM CONFIDENT IN VARC AND DILR BUT QUANT I AM NOT GOOD AND I THINK IT IS THE SCORING SECTION WHAT TO DO ??
kapilbhandari : Analyise and find out your strong and weak chapters. Prepare and then attempt as per that. It will improve your attempt and score.

mbaaspirant : SIR THERE IS 1 BOOK WHICH IF PUBLISHED WOULD HELP ME TREMENDOUSLY "PREVIOUS YEAR AIMCATS CHAPTERWISE". IF THERE IS ANY SUCH SOFT COPY WITH YOU, I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE IT AND YOU'LL GET ALL MY WELL WISHES . MBAASPIRANT2@GMAIL.COM
satyaprakash : We are sure you would love to have it. But since we do not share our past AIMCATs, we'll have to get along without your best wishes.

shino : HELLO GOOD EVENING SIR, AFTER COMPLETING TIME MATERIALS WHAT NEXT?
thomas : you have lot of test. do take that. you will be getting new ones every week.

neethu : SIR MAY I KNOW WHAT IS THE FEES STRUCTURE OF GITAM UNIVERSITY.. I HAVE ATTENTED ENTRANCE IN GITAM AND I HAVE RECEIVED A CALL LETTER SAYING 6.75LAKH FOR 2 YEAR MBA.
ankur : check here - http://www.gitam.edu/fee.aspx

aspirant : SIR, PLEASE SUGGEST BUSINESS MAGAZINES
ankur : read business world as is compact. business india and business today are more comprehensive.

hycb6a739 : THANKS KAPILBHANDARI& ASIM SIR
asim : On behalf of both of us, you are welcome.

buttercup : SIR, NMAT HAS A TIME LIMIT OF 22 MINUTES FOR THE VA/RC SECTION WHICH SEEMS TO BE PRETTY DAUNTING. WITH LESS THAN 2 MONTHS TO GO FOR NMAT, WHAT SHOULD BE THE SPECIFIC STRATEGIES THAT SHOULD BE USED SPECIFICALLY FOR CRACKING THIS TIME DEFICIENT EXAM.
thomas : there are many vocab qns. so time should not be a big issue in verbal. in reasoning and quant+di it will be an issue.

neethu : IR MAY I KNOW WHAT IS THE FEES STRUCTURE OF GITAM UNIVERSITY.. I HAVE ATTENTED ENTRANCE IN GITAM AND I HAVE RECEIVED A CALL LETTER SAYING 6.75LAKH FOR 2 YEAR MBA.IF WE GOT SELECTED THROUGH CAT OR MAT IS THE FEE IS SAME?? AS MENTIOND ABOVE...
ankur : already answered - check here - http://www.gitam.edu/fee.aspx

anony123 : I WANT TO GIVE BOTH CAT AND GMAT AS I WILL HAVE AROUND 4 YEARS OF WORK EX IN FEB, 2017. HOWEVER COLLEGES LIKE ISB FINISH RECEIVING APPLICATIONS BY 15TH JAN, HOW SHOULD I GO ABOUT IT AS I EVEN WANNA BE WELL PREPARED FOR GMAT SPECIFIC PATTERN.
ankur : start now and give your GMAT by Jan-beginning. you have 5 months for the same, which by most counts is sufficient for the same.

rahul : SIR IS THE ALL INDIA MOCK TEST ON 7TH AUGUST SAME AS AIMCAT 1716 OR DO WE NEED TO REGISTER FOR IT TO TAKE IT?
rajeshsaraf : This is same as AIMCAT 1716. You will have to book the slot for that

dipu : WILL THE STUDY MATERIAL PROVIDED BE ENOUGH OR DO WE NEED TO GO THROUGH OTHER BOOKS ?
vinnayraj : they are more than enough...try to solve as many problems from all the material provided..

xyz : THANKS @ANKUR
ankur : You are welcome!

shino : SIR IS TIME MATERIALS ENOUGH FOR ALL OR WE NEED TO REFER ANY OTHER BOOKS??
thomas : the material we give you is enough. you need not refer anything else.

jack : SIR CAN YOU TELL HOW MANY SC STUDENTS WILL BE PRESENT ABOVE 99PERCENTILE IN CAT??
thomas : you cannot make any guess.how does it matter?

alpesh : HELLO
gouri : Yes Alpesh...

vineeth : SIR I M A COMMERCE STUDENT COMPLETED B.COM DEGREE AFTER CAN I STUDY MBA IN NIT,IITS OR IS IT ONLY FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS
kapilbhandari : Some IITs do accept non engineers, but not all.

alpesh : I HAVE COMPLETED ONLY 5 CHAPTERS IN QA TILL NOW. CAN I DO IT? I CANNOT DO 1 CHAPTER IN LESS THAN 2 DAYS.
rajeshsaraf : That's Ok. Only point is the preparation has to be robust.

aspirant : PLEASE SUGGEST GK BOOKS FOR OMETS. SPECIFICALLY FOR SNAP
ankur : read a good year book like malayalam manorma or penguin india or competition success review. other than that our gk magazine is targetted towards entrance exams for MBA, with sample papers of these exams.

anony123 : HELLO @ANKUR, WON'T THAT HAMPER MY CAT PREPARATION?
satyaprakash : For GMAT, you need to focus on sentence correction & critical reasoning as these are the two areas in which your CAT preparation won't be of as much help as it will be for quant, D.I. & R.C. So no, your CAT preparation won't be hampered.

shino : THANK YOU @THOMAS SIR
thomas : you are welcome.

shekhar : IS IT OK IF WE PREPARE ONLY RC AND ATTEMPT THE QUESTIONS.
thomas : there would be easy qns in vocab and if they do not have choices, you need to surely attempt them as there is no negative marking.

shashi : SIR I AM GETTING 80PERCENTILE IN AIM AT SO WHAT ARE MY CHANCES IN CAT..I MEAN UP TO WHAT PERCENTILE I WILL GET
vinnayraj : if you are consistently scoring in that range you can look at a 90+ percentile..also if you keep working hard, master the fundamentals and improve your test taking skills you can look at 95+ or even higher..

guptavineet : SIR, PLEASE GIVE TIPS TO IMPROVE GK FOR RELEVANT EXAMS LIKE TISS, SNAP ETC...
satyaprakash : Read. Read. Read. Newspapers. Magazines. Our magazine- MBA careers & education for you. Manorama year book. G.K. apps. Websites. The most important part is to begin. So off you go, kid!

rajesh : HOW GOOD IS XLRI?
ankur : it is rated in the top 10 - refer here - http://www.time4education.com/CAT-MBA/List_of_B-Schools.aspx

kj : SIR HOW TO PREPARE FOR OMETS..NMAT,SNAP,IIFT...AS THEY HAVE GK IN ADDITION ?
ankur : answered by me multiple times today. please check chat archives.

jack : SIR BECAUSE IM SC STUDENT AND JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY SC STUDENTS WILL BE PRESENT ABOVE 99 PERCENTILE...SO THAT I CAN ESTIMATE MY CHANCES OF CONVERTING THE CALL??
thomas : if you are an sc canidate and if you score more than 99 percentile, you will surely convert.

rajesh : IS WORK EX COMPULSORY FOR ADMISSION INTO IIMS?
thomas : no, many freshers do get in every year.

boson : SIR,HOW MANY MONTHS OF CURRENT AFFAIRS WE NEED TO PREPARE FOR MBA ENTRANCE EXAMS IIFT,XAT,TISS,SNAP ?
gouri : at least an year

mbaaspirant : SIR COULD YOU PLEASE GIVE SOME IDEA ON WHAT WERE THE HIGHEST SCORE(100 PERCENTILER'S SCORE) IN SNAP, IIFT, NMAT 2015?
thomas : IIFT around 75 marks and NMAT -250.

muks : SIR BUT IN CAT THEY DON'T GIVE OPTIONS YOU HAVE TYPE IT DOWN. YOU MEAN IF I INITIALLY SOLVE QUESTIONS WITH OPTIONS I WILL FEEL MORE CONFIDENT WHEN I ATTEMPT THE ONES WITHOUT OPTIONS??
kapilbhandari : The suggestion is for practising and gaining confidence. Once you are confident, then you can start solving without options.

alpesh : SIR HOW MUCH HOURS SHOULD I DEDICATE TO CAT PREP WITH COLLEGE?
satyaprakash : There is no standard answer to this question. It depends on how good you are. Having said that, you should be putting in a minimum of 2 hours to a maximum of 14 hours everyday, depending on your proficiency level.

nikgarg : SIR, SINCE YOU ARE SUGGESTING ME TO PREPARE FOR GMAT/CAT, SO WHAT SHOULD I STUDY FOR EITHER GMAT OR CAT? ALSO AM I APPLICABLE FOR STUDY IN IIM OR NOT?
ankur : 60-70% syllabus is same. For GMAT, you need to focus on sentence correction & critical reasoning as these are the two areas in which your CAT preparation won't be of as much help as it will be for quant, D.I. & R.C. You are eligible for the IIMs main program.

abhi : HELLO....ACTUALLY AM LACKING IN PREPARING RC..EVEN THOUGH I KNW IIM BANGLORE IS GOING TO SET THE PAPER ...COULD U GIVE MEADVICE REGARDIG RC..MEANS FHW CAN I STRONG IT MORE
satyaprakash : Many similar questions have already been answered. Please go through the chat transcript.

kalpesh : SIR GEOMETRY AND MENSURATION ARE TOPICS WITH NEVER ENDING CONCEPTS THE TIME TAKEN TO SOLVE A QUESTION IS USUALLY HIGHER AND SOMETIMES YOU CANNOT SOLVE THE QUESTIONS.HOW TO IMPROVE IN THIS SECTION?
vinnayraj : if you are thorough with all the theorems and concepts the questions are very much solvable..when you look at a geometric figure if all the theorems connected cross your mind and you are able to connect them, the problem is half solved...

dipu : HOW TO FIND THAT WHICH QUESTION TO ATTEMPT AND WHICH QUESTION TO LEAVE
kapilbhandari : That will come with practise and analysis. If you know you which are your strong areas and which Qs you generally get right, then you should attempt those. For other extreme, you should leave.

rajesh : TELL ME SOME GOOD NON IIM COLLEGES
thomas : XLRI, SPJAIN, JBIMS, IIFT, IITs, MDI,NMIMS,SIBM.

kj : SIR MY AIMCAT PERCENTILES HAVE BEEN FLUCTUATING BETWEEN 85-90 ...WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN CAT?
thomas : you can expect something slightly better, say 90-93 for the same level of performance.

shriya : GOOD EVENING FACULTY MEMBERS
gouri : Good Evening....What is your query?

himanshi : WILL THE AIMCATS FROM NOW WILL BE SIMILAR TO THE PATTERN WE R EXPECTING IN CAT OR THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL WILL BE HIGHER THAN PREVIOUS AIMCATS ??
ankur : they will surprise you!

rajesh : APART FROM IIMS WHICH OTHER COLLEGES GIVE RESERVATION TO SC CANDIDATES
ankur : all government colleges/universities.

alpesh : SIR HOW TO PREP FOR DILR AS I HAVE COMPLETED 1ST BASIC BOOK OF BOTH?
thomas : do the online practice tests. you will get the advanced book soon.

pr : I AM NOT ABLE TO UNDERSTAND 2 OR 3 PASSAGES OUT OF 5 IN AIMCAT EVEN AFTER 5 MONTHS OF PREPARATION. HOW TO IMPROVE MY RC IN 4 MONTHS?
gouri : Read online articles...practise from study material...write short summaries for each passage that you read...will help in understanding more deeply.

shrads : SIR,DI IS MY WEAK AREA HOW CAN I WORK ON IT ALSO I GOT 50 MARKS ONLY IN MOCK HOW CAN I IMPROVE
feroz : We'd suggest you start taking as many online tests on SHP and analyze them thoroughly. also start analyzing the previous AIMCATs as well

alpesh : I HAVE SELECTED NMAT ON 8TH OCTOBER, SO HOW SHOULD I PLAN NMAT N CAT PREP. WHEN SHOULD I START FOR NMAT?
rajeshsaraf : No special preparation is required. If you go through CAT syllabus, that will take care of NMAT as well. However, there are couple of other areas in NMAT as well. Like Input and Output etc. Also NMAT is a speed test.

jack : THANK YOU @ THOMAS SIR
thomas : you are welcome.

prem : GUD EVENG SIR, SIR I AM POOR IN VA, WHAT TO DO SIR?
gouri : Pls identify the weak areas...

aspirant : SIR WHAT SHOULD BE AN IDEAL SCORE TO CLEAR SNAP? FOR PUNE COLLEGES.
thomas : around 98 percentile should get you call from SIBM and around 95 will get you call from SCMHRD. 90 SHOULD GET YOU CALL FROM THE NEXT TWO COLLEGES.

abhijit1011 : HELLO SIR HOW MANY PROBLEMS HAVE TO SOLVED FOR BEST PERCENTILE FOR GETTING INTO TOP B SCHOOL
vinnayraj : very difficult to answer that..it depends on the the composition and difficulty level of the test as well as on the performance of the other candidates..you should focus on selecting the right questions(read easy) and not wasting too much time on the difficult questions..also having a plan B when the section is too difficult where you spend a little more time than usual on a particular set or questions and try to solve completely as the cut off would be lower and you are required to solve fewer questions as opposed to when the section is easy..

alpesh : WHAT TO DO OVERCOME LACK OF CONFIDENCE AS I FEEL THAT I CANNOT DO CAT ? INFERIORITY COMPLEX
satyaprakash : Focus on your preparation. Do not listen to your friends. Don't let your scores bog you down mentally. If your preparation is in place, the confidence will begin flowing. May the force be with you!

rajesh : HOW MANY IIMS ARE THERE/
thomas : 19.

ankit : I NEED TO PRACTISE LOGIC BASED DI , SUGGEST RELEVANT PRACTISE SET
rajeshsaraf : Practice qs related to Games and tournaments, Maxima and Minima, solve qs from AIMCATs, analyze them thoroughly

shriya : SIR, ARE THERE ANY GOOD COLLEGES TO APPLY UNDER MAT ? COLLEGES UPTO BBB CATEGORY ?
rajeshsaraf : If YOu Can get 99.99 or 99.98 percentile in Dec MAT, you will straightaway get admission in JBIMS.

alpesh : I FIND DILR OF ALL MOCKS COMPARATIVELY TOUGH IS IT BCOZ LAST CAT 15, IT WAS TOUGH?
thomas : yes, most dilr will follow the pattern of last year and last year it was tough.

shino : SIR DI IS MY WEAK AREA HOW TO IMPROVE?? PLEASE CAN YOU SUGGEST??
rajeshsaraf : Take it step by step. Develop an appetite to devour large chunks of data. Be comfortable with qs related to percentages, averages, calculations, different types of charts

alpesh : I HAVEN'T DONE SPEED MATHS. SHOULD I DO THIS AS MY OTHER TOPICS ARE ALSO LEFT STILL?
feroz : don't ignore any topic. plz do speed maths also

rajesh : HOW GOOD ARE THE NEW IIMS?
thomas : they are ok.if you get a college in the top 20 you can leave the new iims, else join the new iims.

muks : OKK THANKS ALSO I AM CONSUMING A LOT OF TIME IN THE QUANT SECTION.I MEAN YEAH I AM ABLE TO SOLVE THE QUESTION BUT I END UP SPENDING SO MUCH TIME THAT I AM NOT ABLE TO SOLVE ENOUGH QUESTIONS.
rajeshsaraf : There is ONLY one solution. Prior Exposure to wide variety or models of questions will help a lot. There are about 26 chapters with an average of 60 models of qs per chapter

nikgarg : SIR, SINCE I HAVE 4 YRS EXP, WHAT YOU SUGGEST ME, 2YR MBA OR 1 YR EXECUTIVE MBA?
kapilbhandari : What's your profile? Which B-schools are you targeting for executive MBA?

shrads : @FEROZ SIR, WHAT IS SHP
gouri : Student Home page

anony123 : GOING THROUGH THE PREVIOUS BATCH SIZE IN IIM'S, XLRI, ONLY AROUND 2-3% STUDENT HAVE MORE THAN 4 YEARS OF WORK EX, DOES THAT MEAN WHEN ONE HAS AN EXPERIENCE OF AROUND 4 YEARS THESE SHOULD NOT BE THE FIRST CHOICE?
ankur : typically yes but not so necessarily.

pnca60c74 : HOW DO I PREPARE FOR SC & WORDS FROM THE CUE CARDS?
gouri : study the parts of speech.... go through the words on the cue card... make sentences with the words that you learn...one card a day at least.

xyz : IN WHICH CHAPTER DO I FIND QUESTIONS RELATED TO MAXIMA AND MINIMA IN DI?
rajeshsaraf : Pls go through study material SM1001704

prem : M VERY MUCH CONFUSE ABOUT GRAMMAR
gouri : go through each chapter in the study material..supplement with Wren and Martin or any other standard Grammar book...

aravind : HOW TO REMEMBER RC TONES? SHOULD WE BY-HEART THEM
ankur : no. try to understand the finer shades of difference between the words. don't memorise anything!

ra1 : I AM GETTING A SCORE OF 120 IN AIMCAT AND I WANT TO IMPROVE IT IN ALL AREAS ,I HAVE DOUBLED MY STUDY TIME PRACTICED MY WEAK ARES BUT EVERY TIME I WRITE AIMCAT FEW QUESTIONS SEEMS UNTOUCHABLES WHAT SHOULD I DO.
vinnayraj : continue the good work you are doing..the more tests you take the more familiar you get with different varieties of problems..you should be able improve your performance with time..but remember to continue working hard..also dont target any particular score as the required score for securing a particular percentile depends on the difficulty level of the test and that varies..

shriya : WHAT BOOKS CAN YOU SUGGEST FOR PREPARING FOR GK FOR COLLEGES LIKE IIFT, SNAP, TISS , XAT AND OTHERS
kapilbhandari : Read our magazine, some GA magazine like CSR or Pratiyogita Darpan, a year book, like Manorama. One newspaper is a must.

prem : HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY GRAMMAR SIR PLS HELP ME!
gouri : study the parts of speech individually ...then practise error identification questions.

abhi : HOW TO REMEMBER THE NEW WORDS WE COME ACROSS DAILY?
satyaprakash : The best way to remember them is to make sentences in the language of your thought. Make sure that the context explains the meaning of the word. Try and make your own mnemonics to further help you. Writing down the words & repeating their meanings seems to work for some people. And yes, read as much as you can & make sure you use a dictionary & a thesaurus compulsorily.

nikgarg : I AM IN IT SECTOR AND A BI CONSULTANT. I AM LOOKING FOR IIM FOR EXECUTIVE MBA.
ankur : check the requirements and eligibility criteria on the websites of the individual IIMs. work ex requirements are around 5 years.

aspirant : WHAT SHOULD BE AN IDEAL SCORE TO CLEAR NMAT?
shivabhaskaran : Past years cut off for NMIMS was 208 to 210 marks

shashi : SIR I AM NOT GETTING GOOD MARKS IN RC & VA SECTION IN AIM AT WHAT SHOULD I DO...AND WHAT TIME SHOULD I DEVOTE TO MY STUDIES SPECIALLY ENGLISH
gouri : As long as is necessary to learn core concepts. Divide time among R.C, para jumbles, critical reasoning and vocabulary everyday...make a schedule and follow it.

anony123 : THANK YOU ANKUR, AS OF NOW I HAVE AROUND 44 MONTHS OF WORK EX, DO YOU THINK QUITTING MY JOB FOR CAT PREPARATION WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA? ALSO BECAUSE THAT WOULD KEEP MY WORK EX WITHIN THE 4 YEARS BRACKET?
ankur : not a good idea. don't quit your job. work in the time available. if you can, take leave. don't quit the job since that can increase pressure on you to crack the exam.

kushagr : FACING LOT OF PROBLEMS IN DI... CALCULATION SPEED SLOW..MOREOVER REASONING DI IS ALSO WEAK EVEN WHEN I AM GOOD IN LR. HOW TO IMPROVE. PLEASE SUGGEST A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH?
rajeshsaraf : Last 9 AIMCATs have given u the exposure to about 72 sets (36 in DI and 36 in LR). Pls go through each one of them. Analyze those sets thoroughly with respect to underlying concepts involved. Additionally work on speed maths like addition, subtraction, percentage calculations, averages etc

aimandachieve : HI, I WILL HAVE AN EXPERIENCE OF 4 YEARS COME THIS AUGUST IN COGNIZANT. WILL IT BE A PROBLEM FOR ME TO GET AN IIM SEAT?
kapilbhandari : No.

rohan : HOW IMPORTANT ARE THE PREVIOUS YEAR PAPERS IN PREPARATION FOR CAT CONSIDERING THAT THE PATTERN JUST CHANGED LAST YEAR AND THE LEVEL OF DIFFICULT HAS ALSO GONE DOWN. DOES ONE CONTINUE GO SOLVE THEM??
vinnayraj : it will be certainly helpful if you solve them..there have been some constants even though cat has evolved over the years..the areas tested, the traps in questions, the skill required to solve problems and in some cases out of the box thinking..

pnca6oc74 : IS IT NECESSARY TO SOLVE ALL SAMCATS & SECTIONAL TESTS?
kapilbhandari : Depends on your target. If you just want to do MBA from any institute, then you can leave these.

pnca6o048 : I HAVE GOT 88% IN 10TH(SSC), 70% IN 12TH(HSC), I AM CURRENTLY IN 3RD YEAR OF BBA WITH SAY GRAD % AS 70. SO, ACCORDING TO THE IIM A CRITERIA RELEASED, WHAT SHOULD BE MY CAT PERCENTILE TO GET A CALL FROM IIMA?
satyaprakash : Don't have a minimum %ile in mind as it might psychologically limit you. Instead, focus on answering as many questions as you possibly can. All the best!

shriya : OK THANKYOU SIR. BUT DO WE HAVE ONLY JBIMS IN TERMS OF TALKING ABOUT GOOD COLLEGES AND ALSO HOW IS THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL OF THE PAPER IN COMPARISON WITH CAT.?
rajeshsaraf : Difficulty level is low. A net score of 96+ marks (out of 160 marks) and sureshot 99.99 percentile. Other colleges like BIMTECH noida at more than 94 percentile (MAT). For more detailed list, u may refer to MAT course page on TIME website

abhi : SIR, WHICH TOP IIMS/NON-IIMS ARE GOOD FOR THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT SPECIALIZATION?
ankur : iim bangalore and iim calcutta offer better programs than other iims. in the non iims, iit-bombay and iit-delhi are good.

prem : SIR I GOT VERY LITTLE PERCENTILE IN PREVIOUS AIMCATS, BUT I TRIED VERY MUCH, SUGGEST ME HOW TO PREPARE IN AIMCATS
kapilbhandari : Take it one at a time. Prepare some topics before each AIMCAT and make sure you attempt Qs from those. Keep adding topics to your preparation and you will surely improve.

aravind : THANKS ANKUR! WHAT MAIN TOPICS/GENRES SHOULD WE LOOK FOR GENERAL AWARENESS.DOES READING NEWSPAPER ENOUGH FOR THIS?SUGGEST SOME SITES/APPS TO DEVELOP OUR GA?
ankur : no special topics. focus a bit more on business news. try inshorts, newsbytes etc. try the apps of the hindu, toi, mint etc.

pratik : I AM NOT GETTING GOOD MARKS IN RC/VA AS MY ACCURACY IN ALL AIMCATS IS 50% ONLY?WHAT SHOULD I DO?
ankur : check for each mistake as to WHY you made that mistake. mistake analysis can be recorded in a diary. read that / revise that to realise the pattern in that. this will reduce your problem greatly over a period of time.

viswash : SIR, HOW IS IIM VISHAKHAPATNAM? PLEASE ASSIST.
ankur : all new iims are untested but are likely to do well in the coming years, as has been the experience with the "new iims".

abhi : HELLO SIR, COULD YOU PLEASE GIVE SUGGESTIONS FOR VOCABULARY PART, NEED TO IMPROVE VOCABULARY IN CAT PERSPECTIVE
ankur : answered by me and other FMs today multiple times. please check chat archives.

nikgarg : ONE YEAR EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM IS PGPX, RYT? I AHVE CHECKED FOR IIM-A ON THE BELOW LINK BUT COULDN'T FIND THE ELIGIBILITY PART. CAN YOU HELP?
ramnath : Check in this document http://iima.ac.in/programmes/pgpx/faq.html

prem : SIR IN QUANTS AND RESONING M LITTLE BIT GUD BUT I AM NOT ABLE TO DO MORE QUESTIONS HOW CAN I ATTEND MAXM QSTN ??
rajeshsaraf : For quants, three fold approach of knowledge, speed and calculations will work. Knowledge implies going through about 2000 + models of common questions in CAT

shrey : I HAVE JUST STARTED THE BASIC BOOKLET OF RC. IS IT RECOMMENDABLE TO START THIS AT THIS POINT OF TIME OR I SHOULD TRY ADVANCE MATERIAL BECAUSE THERE IS VERY LESS TIME LEFT FOR EXAMS
satyaprakash : Go through the basic booklet in a week's time. Begin taking the online sectional tests in a phased manner after that. Analyse your performances in the AIMCATs and structure your preparation accordingly. There is a lot of time left for the CAT to dawn upon you if you use your time judiciously. All the best!

rohan : IIMA HAS CHANGED IT'S SELECTION CRITERIA FROM 90 PERCENTILE SECTIONAL CUTOFFS IT HAS DROPPED DOWN TO 80 PERCENTILE. DOES THIS MEAN WE CAN EXPECT A TOUGH PAPER THIS YEAR?!
satyaprakash : CAT has always been easy or tough, depending on how one fares on the D-day. Don't read too much into the decision of IIM-A. They have only announced a drop in the sectional cut-off, and not in the overall cut-off. This has been done mainly to give more candidates a fairer chance.

aradhana : SIR, IN MOST OF THE AIMCATS IM ENDING UP ATTEMPTING AND WASTING TIME ON SOME DIFFICULT QS WHICH WERE IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE PAPER AND AS A RESULT MISSED OUT ON SOME EASY QUESTIONS WHICH WERE AT THE END OF THE PAPER.
rajeshsaraf : That can be overcome ONLY by loads of practice before hand. Analyze those questions which you felt as time guzzlers and comapre vis a vis those questions which were relatively easy

anony123 : THANK YOU ANKUR, WHAT CONCERNS ME IS THAT I HAVE CROSSED THE 90 PERCENTILE MARK ONLY TWICE TILL NOW AND MY SCORES HAVE DROPPED CONTINUOUSLY SINCE THEN. MOREOVER ALSO CONSIDERING MY HIGH WORK EX THIS COULD BE SOUGHT OF MY LAST ATTEMPT AT CAT
ankur : please don't worry. with 120 days to go, i suggest you experiment now to finalise your strategy by end of september. that way october and november can be used to fine tune any aspects that are left.

pnca6o048 : WHICH SECTION IS PREDICTED TO BE DIFFICULT IN CAT 2016?
vinnayraj : difficult to predict..we should be prepared for any kind of eventual paper that we may get...the last two years trends suggest towards a difficult di/lr section...

ra1 : I HAD IN MIND A SCORE OF 150-180 WOULD BE A GOOD ONE TO GET AS THE FIRST RANKER IS GETTING 200+ IN EACH TEST
satyaprakash : Why not try and be the first ranker yourself!

pnca6oc74 : WHAT AVG SCORE SHOULD ONE TARGET IN AIMCATS?
kapilbhandari : Depends on your target B-Schools

xyz : WHEN WOULD IIM'S RELEASE ADMISSION CRITERIA?
ankur : they have started. IIM Ahd released recently on their website - http://www.iima.ac.in/programmes/admission-details/admission-procedure-for-pgp-2017-19-batch.html

shino : @RAJESH SIR, THANK YOU...CAN U PLEASE SUGGEST HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE BEST IN QA, LR, DI??
rajeshsaraf : For QA - topics like numbers, equations, quadratic equations, geometry, function graphs, coordinate geom, trigo, PC and Prob etc. Similarly in LR, complete chapters like Seating arrangement linear and circular, distribution, Selection, Venn diagram, Cubes, Binary logic, for DI u need to be thorough with percentages calculations

prem : SIR IF I COVER ALL THE MATERIALS WITH CONCEPTS,CAN I CRACK CAT?
vinnayraj : yes you can..along with that make sure you take as many aimcats as possible and analyze each one thoroughly and religiously and keep working on your test taking skills..

shriya : CAN YOU U GIVE THE ROUGHLY IDEA ABOUT THE NUMBER OF SEATS FOR A GENERAL CATEGORY STUDENT IN IIFT. ALSO WHAT IS THE LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY OF THE PAPER IN COMPARISON TO CAT.
ankur : there are a total of 240 seats in iift delhi. assuming appx 50% reservations you are left with appx 120 seats.

pnca6oc74 : @KAPILBHANDARI : COULD YOU PLS BE PRECISE ABT THE SCORES? I THINK WE ARE TALKING ABT THE TOP B-SCHOOLS?
kapilbhandari : If it is top 10 B-Schools, then target 99+ percentile. Score may vary depending on the difficulty level.

dlca60257 : HELLO SIR, SHOULD WE DO PAST YEAR PAPERS ALONG WITH AIMCATS OR MATERIAL SET 2 ALSO?
gouri : Do as much of both as possible...

iimabc : HOW TO INCREASE READING SPEED?
satyaprakash : (1) Gain familiarity with the subject areas tested in CAT (2) Make sure your vocabulary, grammar & usage are top-notch (3) Use the questions to gauge what is expected of you (4) Try to increase your eye-span by doing reverse-reading for 5 minutes a day (5) Practise (6) Practise (7) Practise

rj : HELLO, I JOINED A LATE BATCH IN MAY AND MANY TOPICS HAVE NOT BEEN COVERED YET. WHILE ANALYZING THE AIMCAT, SHOULD I BOTHER WITH QUESTIONS FROM TOPICS THAT I HAVENT STUDIED YET.
vinnayraj : some of the questions from the topics you have not covered can also be solved by simple reasoning and intuitive understanding..so you can go through them..but if you are clueless you can come back to them after covering the fundamentals..you should be able to understand though...

dipal : HELLO,EVERY MENTOR SAYS TO FOLLOW A DEFINITE SCHEDULE OF PRACTICING RCS,VA QUESTIONS.BUT HOW MANY RCS AND VA QUESTIONS ARE NEEDED TO BE DONE DAILY...NO ONE TALKS ABOUT.IT WOULD BE GOOD IF I GET A SPECIFIC NUMBER RATHER THAN 'DO AS MUCH AS YOU CAN' OR ANSWER OF SUCH SORTS?..SORRY IF OFFENDED
ankur : the quantity of food you eat varies by your age, body weight, type of physical activity and any special advice by a doctor. similarly, the number of questions to be done by you depends on your current English percentile, your target of a minimum English percentile, your strengths and weaknesses in the english section and the number of days left for the exam. unless one has this data, one can't really recommend a number out of the hat to you. yes, i could randomly recommend a number like 42 VA questions in a week and 73 RC questions in a week with a standard deviation of 20% but that is a number which is random. no offence taken but we need your data to recommend something.

anony123 : THANK YOU SO MUCH ANKUR, YOU UPLIFTED MY SPIRIT
ankur : you are welcome

nikgarg : ALSO, CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGEST ME HOW TO START PREPARING FOR GMAT. IS THERE ANY STUDY MATERIAL ONLINE OR ANY BEST BOOK AVAILABLE?
ramnath : Check this out http://www.time4education.com/gmat/gmat-online-correspondence-course.aspx

shree : BARELY CROSSING CUT OFF IN QUANT. I HAVE COMPLETED BASIC BOOKLETS AND AM REGULARLY TAKING AND ANALYSING MOCKS. KINDLY SUGGEST A WAY TO IMPROVE MY PERCENTILE.
ramnath : Shree...look at your performance in the individual areas. Where you are scoring well and not so well and try to improve on your conceptual understanding fo those where you are not doing so well. Analyse your errors - why are Qs going wrong - silly mistakes/improper understanding/incorrect calculations etc and attack the root cause of these errors

prem : @RAJESH_SIR, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE 2000+ MODELS OF COMMON QSTN IN AIM CAT
rajeshsaraf : For example finding unit's digit is one type, finding last two digits is second type, in context with factors about 10 models, and so on...

doordie : SIR WHAT QUESTIONS NUMBER CAN WE EXPECT IN DIS CAT WILL IT BE THE SAME OR ANY CHANGE? WILL THERE BE AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
vinnayraj : there should be some clarity when they officially release the tutorial in the month of october.there are good chances that the number of questions are the same as that of last year...

prem : SIR TELL ME HOW TO PREPARE IN QUANTS
sumit : if u are fresher pls do regular practice in any one topic daily and devote 3 hr over this.and try to get variety of logical and conceptual base question not formula based.

pnca6o048 : SIR, WHAT ARE THE NUMBER OF SEAT FOR A GENERAL CATEGORY STUDENT(BOY) IN IIM A?
ankur : appx 400 seats overall. removing reservation of caste(50%), you are left with 200. removing a further 15% (women) you are left with 170 for a general male candidate.

pnca6oc74 : DOES SM1001705 FOCUSES ON CAT & SM1001707 ON OMET FOR LR?
ramnath : Broadly yes

prem : WHAT IS THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR IIMA AND IIMB
ankur : iima - http://www.iima.ac.in/programmes/admission-details/admission-procedure-for-pgp-2017-19-batch.html iimb - http://www.iimb.ernet.in/programmes/post_graduate/pgp

hemant : I HAVE DONE WELL IN THE CLASS TESTS BUT WHEN ATTEMPT FOR AIMCATS I FORGET THE METHOD WHICH I HAVE PRACTICED MANY TIMES. HOW TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEM?
gouri : probably you are nervous in a time bound situation...take more time bound tests at home to increase your level of confidence...

aspirant : HELLO , I AM A FINAL YEAR UNDERGRADUATE AND CURRENTLY IN 7TH SEM SO MY UNDERGRAD MARKS WILL BE CONSIDERED UPTO 6TH SEM FOR CAT 16 ???
vinnayraj : at the time of registering for cat,the average marks of all the semesters completed need to filled in..

boson : LAST AIMCAT DATE IS 20TH NOV & CAT IS ON 4TH DEC.WILL AIMCAT SECHEDULE CHANGE ?
satyaprakash : Not as of now.

ra1 : I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH DEPTH IS REQUIRED FOR 200+ , I AIM TO TAKE IT STEP BY STEP FROM 150 TO 180 THEN 200 BUT I AM NOT ABLE TO CROSS 130 IT HAS BECOME A BARRIER FOR ME , I AM QUITE DESPERATE TO GET 150 IN THIS TEST.
ankur : that is a mistake. don't target a score since that varies with difficulty level. target a percentile if you want to.

prabhat : ONLY 4 MONTHS FOR CAT.WHAT SHOULD BE OUR STRATEGY TO TACKLE OTHER MBA ENTRANCE EXAM ALSO...
gouri : Good idea to concentrate solely on CAT now...

hello : CAN ANY PERSON IMPROVE FROM 94 PERCENTILE TO 99 PERCENTILE IN THESE 4 MONTHS? WHAT WOULD IT REQUIRE?
satyaprakash : Absolutely! It will require you to analyse your AIMCAT performance in detail so that you know the areas that are responsible for you being in the 94 %ile. You also need to figure out which areas are holding you back. Once you are aware of those, you should take the appropriate steps to consolidate your strengths & improve upon your weaknesses. Try different strategies & find out which one works best for you.

shriya : SIR IIMA HAS SHOW THAT THE MINIMUM PERCENTILE RANK FOR A GENERAL CATEGORY STUDENT SHOULD BE 80 .. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN .? THEY MAKE THE CALLS ON WHAT PERCENTILE
ankur : no. that means that minimum must be that. the final is normally higher.

pnca6oc74 : I KNOW ITS IRRELEVANT TO THE TOPIC, BT WHT BOOKS CAN ONE SUGGEST TO BE THOROUGH WITH FOR MAT?
ramnath : Your CAT material will be more than sufficient for you to crack MAT.

hello : HOW TO PREPARE GK FOR IIFT?
ankur : answered multiple times today by many people including me. please check archives.

iimabc : @SATYAPRAKADH SIR, WHAT DOES REVERSE READING MEAN?
satyaprakash : Hold the article upside down and read.

: HELLO SIR,I'M GETTING 95+ IN QA IN MOST OF MY MOCKS INCLUDING AIMCATS. BUT HOW TO INCREASE IT FURTHER? I'VE DONE ONLY A FEW QUES FROM EACH CHAPTER & HAVEN'T DONE GEO PART AT ALL. I'M SKIPPING THE GEO PART MOSTLY IN MOCKS. WHAT SHOULD BE MY PLAN TO INCREASE MY %LE IN QA?
vinnayraj : you are doing extremely well considering the fact that you are skipping questions from geometry that appear in good number..and you may be missing out on many easy questions from the area and your score could go up significantly if you identify and solve them..so the first thing you need to do is cover the fundamentals of all the concepts and master all the theorems..generally a good number of questions come from geometry in cat and so you have to cover the area as early as possible..also try to learn the fundamentals of any other topic you have left out and keep solving problems from different concepts on a regular basis...

hello : AT THIS POINT OF TIME, HOW MANY MOCKS SHOULD WE BE ATTEMPTING EVERY WEEK?
kapilbhandari : Firstly you should be revising your topics and making sure that you have some scoring areas in each section. If you have covered that, then you can aim for 1-2 Mocks every week.

shashi : SIR WHICH COLLEGES CAN I GET WITH 90-95 PERCENTILE WITH OBC
ramnath : You stand a very good chance to get into the top schools (top 10+AAA)..All the best.

topper : WOULD CLASSROOM STUDENTS WILL GET ANY MATERIAL/TESTS SPECIFIC TO OTHER MBA EXAMS?
ramnath : Yes..starting end-August

rj : IF I FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE WITH A CERTAIN TOPIC EVEN AFTER EXHAUSTING TIME MATERIAL...WHAT OTHER SOURCES SHOULD I LOOK TO FOR FURTHER PRACTICE?
ankur : go to www.aldaily.com or www.magportal.com or wikipedia

dipal : ANKUR SIR,I ASKED ABOUT THE NUMBER OF QUESTIONS IN RCS AND VA TO BE DONE AND YOU ASKED ABOUT MY DATA....I AM AN ENGLISH MEDIUM GUY...MY SCORES IN AIMCATS ARE FLUCTUATING IN ENGLISH...I WOULD SCORE 70 IN ONE AND 30 IN OTHER....ITS NOT THAT I COULD NOT INTERPRET QUESTIONS ITS JUST YHAT I GET TOO OFTEN STUCK BETWEEN TWO OPTIONS AND SOME DAY I NAIL IT AND OTHER DAY I LOSE IT ALL
satyaprakash : Thank you, Dipal. But, the data that you have given is still generic in nature. Anyway, from whatever you have said, your primary problem in R.C. seems to be your inability to distinguish between the answer options. If that is indeed the case, then you are misinterpreting the question, the passage, the answer options or you are guilty of making incorrect assumptions. There is no other reason. If a definite answer is what you truly desire, sit down with a faculty member and go over your strengths & weaknesses. Two more points (and I hope you take no offence)- work on your punctuation & NEVER type in capitals. That's rude.

aspirant : IN THE NORMALISATION PROCESS WILL THEY USE MY UNDERGRAD PERCENTAGE THE ONE I ENTERED DURING REGISTRATION ?
ramnath : Yes

doordie : AS PER LAST YR THERE WAS NO VOCAB IN VERBAL ITS WAS COMPLETELY DOMINATED BY RC & JUMBLE SENTC. CAN WE EXPECT THE SAME OR WILL IT BE DOMINATED BY VOCAB THIS YR?
satyaprakash : Your guess is as good as ours. My personal opinion is that even if there are vocabulary-based questions, they won't be the pure ones. They will also be based on reasoning. Make sure you do not ignore vocabulary as words are the building blocks of a language.

shino : SIR FOR GK CURRENT AFFAIRS IS ENOUGH??
kapilbhandari : Already answered.

shriya : ANKUR SIR WHILE FILLING THE FORM FOR IIFT THEY HAVE ASKED THE PREFERENCE OF COLLEGE FOR WHICH I HAVE FILLED DELHI SO WILL I NOT GET THE CALL FROM KOLKATA IF I CLEAR THE CUT OFF
ankur : yes. please fill the form again if you so wish.

shree : PLEASE ANSWER THE QUERY.
ramnath : Just did..please check

rohan : WHEN WILL WE GET THE ADDITIONAL MATERIAL OR BOOKLETS. ARE THEY OR ADVANCE LEVEL??
ramnath : Yes..Advance practice SMs will be given

mayank : 10 , 12 , GRAD 68 64 69 NO WORKEX BBA WHICH IIMS SHOULD I TARGET AND COLLEGES ?
kapilbhandari : Firstly target excellent score in CAT. If you get a good score, then they will give you a call.

hemant : SUGGESTIVE MATERIAL FOR CR APART FROM STUDY MATERIAL?
ramnath : The material(SMs/handouts/Online sectional tests on CR) will be adequate preparation.

shriya : BY WHEN WILL WE BE GETTING THE OMETS ON OUR SHP
ankur : it will take some time. mock NMATs will be there first and then mock IIFT.

topper : SIR I AM GETTING VERY FEW QUES CORRECT IN GRAMMAR QUES. HOW CAN I IMPROVE IN THIS AREA ?

prabhat : @VINAY RAJ SIR..2ND MATERIAL(PRACTICE EXCERCISE) PROVIDED BY TIME LOOKS VERY DIFFICULT TO ME FOR EVERY SECTION..WHAT SHOULD I DO?AS OF NOW I HAVENT COMPLETED BASIC MATERIALS COMPLETELY......
vinnayraj : focus on finishing the basic materials..also try to solve a few problems from the 2nd lot and try to get familiar with them even if you find them to be very difficult..remember you also need to develop the ability to quickly identify the difficult questions that shouldnt be attempted in cat and thereby save time...

chaitu : HI SIR. HOW THE ACTUAL CAT PAPER DIFFICULTY WILL BE?
ankur : no one can predict. don't waste time in that. score is irrelevant. relative score (i.e. percentile) is the relevant factor.

ra1 : HOW TO TARGET PERCENTILE AND NOT SCORES .I AM GETTING 90 PERCENTILE
kapilbhandari : If you are consistent in your performance, then you will keep score better than others, which will keep your percentile high, despite variable score.

chaitu : AS COMPARED TO OUR AIM CATS? I FIND OUR AIMCAT ARE LOT MORE DIFFICULT THAN REAL ONES ? WHAT IS THE REASON
ramnath : There are many AIMCATs that are easy too..please recheck. AIMCATs try to expose the students to different variations of difficulty levels so that the students are equipped to handle such surprises in CAT.
