Chat on preparation tips for VA / RC & LR!
(Chat Transcript)

sk : MUMBAI UNIVERSITY SC CATEGORY MERIT NO IN MHCET IS 34...WILL I GET ADMISSION IN SYDENHAM AND WHICH PROGRAM..PLEASE HELP
satyaprakash : That depends on how many of the people ranked above you drop out of the CAP round. You do stand a chance but it's too close to call, kid.

rohit : HI I AM FACING PROBLEM IN READING COMPREHENSION AND VERBAL ABILITY HOW TO OVERCOME.
shritisharma : what is the problem?

viji : HOW I CAN IMPROVE IN LR AS I ABLE TO MAKE CASES BY GIVEN POINTS BUT MY ANS COMES WRONG ALWAYS?
satyaprakash : Analyse your efforts and have an accurate idea of why your answer was incorrect. Was it because of misinterpreting the question or data, incorrect application of the formula, incorrect calculation or pure lack of practice? Once you know the cause, you can work towards it not being a cause of your incorrect answers.

dlcb7a011 : HI IS THERE ANY WAY TO INCREASE READING SPEED?
satyaprakash : (1) Read on a variety of topics so as to familiarise yourself with them & the terminology used in them. (2) Improve your vocabulary, grammar & usage concurrently so that the import of the article doesn't slip you by. (3) Visit your SHP for reading links. (4) Speak to a F.M. who will guide you in a detailed manner. (5) Above all, bear in mind that your reading speed is a function of your comprehension ability.

muca7a230 : I'M NOT ABLE TO UNDERSTAND RC PASSAGES...WHAT TO DO?
gouri : try writing short summaries for passages to begin with... gradually your understanding will increase.. Read extensively...that will also improve comprehension.

rohit : CURRENTLY MY READING SPEED IS 50 WPM. WHAT APPROACH SHOULD I TAKE TO INCREASE MY READING SPEED. CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGEST FEW GOOD BASIC BOOK TO START READING.
shritisharma : use the eye span method to increase your reading speed, don't look at each and every word individually, look at the three to five words in one eye span, the method has been elaborated in your RC book

rohit : SHRITISHARMA: NOT ABLE TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE THINGS AND ANSWER DUE TO TIME
shritisharma : so, first you need to improve your comprehension. For that divide each passage or article that you read into chunks. After going through one chunk with similar idea, write down the main idea of that chunk. So each passage with have anywhere between 5 to 10 such chunks. this gives you the thought-flow of the passage. Also the chunks you don't understand will have to be discussed with your faculty. Cover different genres of passages in this manner. If you have done this with 5 abstract passages then the next abstract passage will be easier for you to understand. So, do this for abstract, economic, analytical, political and other types of passages

daksh : HELLO SIR, FOR CAT-17 AT THIS POINT OF TIME TO IMPROVE RC I SHOULD FOCUS MORE ON READING NOVELS OR SOLVING RC?
gouri : both in equal measure...

pavan : HOW TO EXCEL IN PARA JUMBLE QUESTIONS?
shritisharma : first go through the tips for solving para jumbles. Keep an eye out for connectives or linking words (pronouns, conjunctions etc.). Look out for chronology, names and acronyms grouping of ideas, idea followed by example and not the other way round. Go through all these pointers then practice a lot. Also, after having come up with an answer read the arrangement as a passage to see whether it is making sense

iim_a_aspirant : SIR/MAMITS TOUGH TO ANSWER THE SENTENCES TO BE ARRANGED IN LOGICAL ORDER WHEN OPTIONS ARE NOT GIVEN . GIVE ME SOME TIPS TO INCREASE MY ACCURACY
satyaprakash : (1) Read all the sentences (2) Understand the intent of the author (3) Figure out the idea flow (4) Try to identify the opening & closing sentences (5) Look for the connectors- Grammar/Vocabulary/Theme < Logic < Author's intent (6) Make sure that there is a proper flow among all the sentences instead of just trying to form pairs and group them into a paragraph (7) Practise, practise, and then practise some more.

dlcb7a011 : HI I FACE DIFFICULTY IN PASSAGES RELATED TO HISTORY AND LITERATURE..HOW TO OVERCOME THAT?
asim : Try to read more number of passes based on this theme, the key to overcoming this problem is by making oneself familiar with the subject.

pavan : SHP? @SATYAPRAKASH SIR
satyaprakash : SHP=Student Home Page, FM=Faculty Member, ISRO=Indian Space Research Organisation (GSLV- MK III)

nitesh : HELLO SIR,
bharat : Hello, Nitesh. What is your question?

student : HOW TO IMPROVE IN CORRECTLY ARRANGING AND CHOOSING THE ODD SENTENCE OUT IN PARA JUMBLES?
satyaprakash : Just answered an almost exact question. Go through the chat transcript.

rohit : PLEASE SUGGEST SOME BEGINNER LEVEL NOVEL TO START MY READING HABIT
bharat : Read any work of R. K. Narayan. You do not have to read high-funda, big-sounding titles.

kinzy : HI,
bharat : Hi! What is your question?

student : IS THERE ANY TRICK TO REMEMBER THE ROOT WORDS?
bharat : This is a difficult question to answer! Normally, we ask students to remember words using the RPS (roots-prefixes-suffixes) method. Now you are asking us to share tricks of remembering root words. None that we know... however, try to understand roots with their true meaning and add the roots to a couple of words.

kinzy : WITH 5 MONTHS LEFT, HOW SHOULD I DISTRIBUTE EACH PART RELATED TO VA AND RC PREP IN TERMS OF MATERIAL PRIORITY AND TIME.
charlton : 90 days for all concepts and applications (In all 3 sections of CAT). The remaining 90 days for adequate test practice (AIMCATs, SAMCATs etc). You need to solve 3 RC passages daily and atleast 200 parajumble questions before the CAT exam.

gaurav : HOW TO KICK-START PREP FOR VARC SECTION ?
charlton : Read, read, read. Practise RCs for 30 minutes daily. Solve parajumbles, odd man out and summary questions on a day to day basis.

rhea : I'M FACING A DIFFICULTY WITH LR EVEN AFTER READING THE QUESTION AGAIN I FIND THAT I END UP MISINTERPRETING IT. WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE THIS FOR CAT-17?
satyaprakash : The first step is to identify the reason for your misinterpreting questions. Only then can you focus on eliminating the problem at hand. Once you are aware of the reason for it, you can try different approaches to ensure that it doesn't prop up again.

abcd : SIR,I AM COMING FROM SCIENCE BACKGROUND.I AM FEELING VERY DIFFICULT WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE LIKE LACK OF VOCABULARY, CONFIDENCE IN SPEAKING, GRAMMATICAL ISSUES. HOW CAN I OVERCOME THIS ESPECIALLY LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN SPEAKING?
gouri : read extensively practise reading aloud in front of the mirror...it reduces inhibitions while speaking. learn words from the cue cards. cover portions of grammar in sections..as in the parts of speech ...then integrate the whole.

shubham : HELLO, I AM ABLE TO SUMMARIZE OR RECALL THE PASSAGES. WHAT CAN I DO ?
shritisharma : Divide the passage into paragraphs, jot down the main idea of each para in the margin as you read the passage. this way you don't have to remember the main idea of the entire passage at one go

frca7a011 : HOW TO IMPROVE VOCABULARY AS I HAVE TRIED TO LEARNT MANY WORDS BUT FORGOT THEM ?
shritisharma : there are quite a few techniques, see what works for you: 1.Try to retain five new words each day and make sentences with them wherever and whenever possible. 2. Keep 2 flashcards in you pocket everyday. First check how many words you know in those cards and keep on revising the ones you don't know throughout the day wherever you are. 3. when the word is an adjective, associate it with real life examples. relate it to the people you know or to the famous personalities. For example, ambidextrous (my aunt or Leonardo da Vinci). 4. You can try to teach 10 words to someone everyday, even if you teach by looking at the meanings and the examples, you are bound to remember the words

dlcb7a011 : IS THERE A NEED TO READ EXTRA BOOKS BASED ON GRAMMAR AND VOCAB TO IMPROVE THEM OR IT WILL DO BY STUDYING THE MATERIAL PROVIDED BY THE INSTITUTE AND JUST BY ECLECTIC READING?
tarannumraza : Material provided along with the classroom handouts aquaint you with the common errors & how to correct them.It is sufficient for basic knowledge. You can go through previous year questions of different OMETs for further practice.

yoshita : HELLO, SIR/MA'AM.
asim : Hello

mehamittal : I AM FACING PROBLEM IN RC. I AM NOT ABLE TO COMPREHEND PASSAGES PROPERLY. I FORGET THE IDEA WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN STATED AS I CONTINUE READING FURTHER. SO IN THE END I FEEL LIKE I DON'T NOE THE MAIN IDEA OF THE PASSAGE.
shritisharma : you have to keep on jotting down the main idea of each chunk or paragraph in single sentences as you proceed. This way you will remember the ideas as you read further. also this technique is very helpful from the exam point of view ( you do get rough sheets in CAT) The only challenge is doing it fast which requires practice

nitesh : I HAVE PROBLEMS IN RC AND VERBAL HELP ME IN THAT TOPICS
gouri : What are the problems that you are facing?

khushi : HOW TO TO DO THE READING COMPREHENSION IN AIMCAT IT IS BEING DIFFICULT FOR ME TO ATTEND ALL OF THEM IN THAT MUCH OF TIME ??
charlton : Rank the RC passages as I, II, III, IV, V based on your familiarity with the topic and the question types. Then read the passage first and the questions later. Skim, scan and eliminate atleast 2 wrong choices first. Then answer the question.

yoshita : II WAS WONDERING IF IT IS SAFE TO LEAVE OOUT AANYTHING DURING THE COURSE OF PPREPARATION FOR CAT?
satyaprakash : No.

pavan : HOW TO DO WELL IN LOGICAL ORDERING OF SENTENCES BASED QUESTIONS?
vijayalaxmi : Para jumbles have been a part of the non mcqs from the last 2 years. To enhance your accuracy consistently practise. When you work on a para jumble whenever you find a logical link between 2 sentences write the reason for linking the 2 sentences do this for every question. Then check the solutions if you are right then you have understood the pattern if you are wrong go through the solutions thoroughly and understand the pattern. Do this for atleast 100 questions that is everyday maybe 3 questions then you will see a marked improvement.

akki : FOR QUESTIONS BASED ON CORRECTION OF GRAMMAR IN THE SENTENCES - WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING PREPARES ME BETTER? 1. READING IN GENERAL(NEWSPAPER, NOVEL) 2. SOLVING AS MANY AS EXERCISES AS POSSIBLE FOR THE GRAMMAR BASED QUESTIONS?
satyaprakash : Both. And the most important rule is to interpret the meaning of the sentence rather than merely spot (or in some cases, invent) the error.

kinzy : AT THIS POINT, WOULD ARTICLES/EDITORIALS BE FINE TO READ RATHER THAN COMPLETE NOVELS? ALSO KEEPING IN MIND THE XAT EXAM, WHAT SHALL BE DONE TO SCALE ESSAY WRITING SKILL?
tarannumraza : Essays/Newspaper & magazine articles will also work fine. The important thing is to understand the logical flow & the nuances of the language used.

gaurav : WHEN WILL BE CAT 17 BE HELD APPROX?
satyaprakash : Towards the fag end of November or in the beginning of December. Probably.

aaa : MY DEGREE HAS COMPLETED IN 2017 MAY ( ENGINEERING )........ I HAVE STARED WORKING IN ANGEL BROKING ( AN INDIAN STOCK BROKING FIRM COMPANY ) BUT WORKING FROM HOME..... WILL IT BE COUNTED AS WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE TIME OF INTERVIEW IN 2018
satyaprakash : If you are getting a salary slip, then yes.

frca7a011 : HOW MUCH MINIMUM MARKS I SHOULD COVER IN VA AND RC AS OVERALL I CAN COVER IN QA AND DI
asim : No one can predict the required number of marks are it would depend on difficulty level of test.

yoshita : FOR RC, IS IT BETTER TO READ THE QUESTIONS FIRST AND THEN THE COMPREHENSION, OR THE OTHER WAY ROUND ?
satyaprakash : If you can read the questions and use them to figure out your approach to the passage, then it will be of great help to you. If you are one of those students who read the questions and look for answers immediately, I advise you to not do so then. Find out which works best for you.

aaa : MY DEGREE HAS COMPLETED IN 2017 MAY ( ENGINEERING )........ I HAVE STARED WORKING IN ANGEL BROKING ( AN INDIAN STOCK BROKING FIRM COMPANY ) BUT WORKING FROM HOME..... WILL IT BE COUNTED AS WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE TIME OF INTERVIEW IN 2018................. PLEASE TELL .............
satyaprakash : Already answered, kid. Read the transcript a bit more carefully.

student : THANK U MR BHARAT AND I ALSO WANTED TO KNOW HOW TO EFFICIENTLY USE THE CUE CARDS?
charlton : Read and remember the meanings. Revise after 3 days. Try to associate the word with people. But also improve your contextual understanding by reading a lot of articles from a) The Economist b) New York Times c) The Guardian etc

khushi : SIR IF I HAD NOT DONE ANY OF THE QUESTIONS OF LOGICAL REASONING FROM WHICH TOPIC SHOULD I START WITH.
asim : You could begin with linear and circular arrangement, though there is no correct order as all the areas are independent of each other.

shubham : SIR, I AM NOT ABLE TO SUMMARIZE THE PASSAGE. WHAT CAN I DO ?
shritisharma : try to figure out the main idea of each para in the passage then compile them, bring all those ideas together and you will get the summary of the passage

mehamittal : I AM FACING PROBLEM IN RC. I AM NOT ABLE TO COMPREHEND PASSAGES PROPERLY. I FORGET THE IDEA WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN STATED AS I CONTINUE READING FURTHER. SO IN THE END I FEEL LIKE I DON'T NOE THE MAIN IDEA OF THE PASSAGE.
gouri : try writing a gist against each paragraph...then read through your own gists to form a sequence...do it repeatedly till you are able to connect ideas mentally.

sham : HELLO,PLEASE GUIDE ME ON HOW TO IMPROVE GRAMMAR BECAUSE IN SENTENCE CORRECTION I ALWAYS FIND DIFFICULTY IN SPOTTING THE ERROR.
vijayalaxmi : please go step by step . Work on all the important chapters that is nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs tenses, adverbs, subject verb agreement, articles, prepositions, conjunctions. Go through the rules given by the faculty . Pick up every rule and create your own sentences relevant to the rule. go through the class sheet and then go through the same rules from the grammar book given by TIME

dlcb7a011 : SIR/MAM WHAT IS CHRONOLOGY?
satyaprakash : CHRONOS = Time. Chronology is any arrangement or list according to the occurrence or the event. Try using a dictionary & a thesaurus in the future.

gaurav : HOW TO KICK-START PREP FOR VARC SECTION?
gouri : read a lot...practise basics of grammar...set a target and learn words from the cue cards everyday.

arko : IS IT A WISE STRATEGY TO ATTEMPT ALL RC QUESTIONS AND THEN PICK AND CHOOSE VA QUESTIONS IN THE REMAINING TIME?
gouri : No, attempt the questions that you are sure of answering correctly, be it R.C or be V.A.

drcb7a055 : HELLO SIR...IM HAVING PROBLEM IN FINDING MEANING OF WORDS...I CANT REMEMBER THE MEANING OF WORDS..PLEASE HELP ME IN HOW CAN I REMEMBER THEM
gouri : make meaningful sentences with the words that you learn... that will help you to remember their meanings.

shubham : SIR, ARE NON-ENGG ELIGIBLE FOR MBA IN IIT'S ?? I AM DOING BCA FROM IP UNIV. PLEASE ANS THIS QUERY
bharat : Only two IITs allow non-engineers -- IIT Madras admits any bachelor degree holder ------ IIT Delhi opens its doors to any four-year degree holder. In your case, you are eligible ONLY for IIT Madras.

nitin : WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL READING SPEED RECOMMENDED FOR CAT? MY COMPREHENSION IS 90%+ AND SPEED IS 320 WPM CURRENTLY.
shritisharma : you reading speech is pretty good. Average reading speed should be 350-400 wpm

yoshita : FOR XAT, WHAT ARE THE COMMON GENRES THAT THEY GIVE YOU TOPICS FROM, TO WRITE ON?
bharat : politics, economics and socio-cultural issues. Sample this actual topic: In capitalism, man exploits man. In Communism, it is the other way round.

nitin : IS IT TRUE THAT MANY RC PASSAGES HAVE COME FROM THE WORKS OF AYN RAND?
satyaprakash : Have they? That's news to me, kid.

rhea : WHAT IS THE IDEAL SPEED I SHOULD TARGET WHILE ANSWERING RC AND VA QUESTIONS FOR CAT?
charlton : Initially start with 8-10 minutes per passage of 6 questions and then bring down the time to 6-8 minutes per passage.

harshit : WHILE ANSWERING QUES SUCH AS TONE AND STYLE, WHAT SHLOULD BE KEPT IN MIND AND WHICH PART OF THE RC SHOULD BE GIVEN PREFERENCE FOR THE SAME (I.E. BEGINNING OR ENDING)
satyaprakash : The overall tone and style are dependent on the topic, the intent of the author, the central idea and how the author has presented it, the idea flow, and of course, the structure of the passage. In other words, keep on reading and improve your ability to identify the tone and style instead of hoping there is a formula for it. All the best!

jasleen : PLZ TELL ME SOME TIPS TO SOLVE LR QUESTIONS IN LEAST POSSIBLE TIME. I TAKE A LOT OF TIME WHILE SOLVING LR QUESTIONS, ESPECIALLY ARRANGEMENT ONES.
satyaprakash : (1) Get the theory in place (2) Be clear about the different approaches to different L.R. questions (3) Practise a lot (4) Analyse your performance inn every question that you tackle (5) Repeat 4 & 5 till you become good at solving L.R.

aaa : SATYAPRAKASH SIR WE NEED TO SHOW OUR SALARY SLIP IF WE HAVE WORK EXPERIENCE OR A LETTER FROM THE COMPANY WILL WORK THAT A AM EMPLOYEE OF THAT COMPANY???
charlton : Both are required. Last months salary slip and experience certificate.

aaa : SATYAPRAKASH SIR WE NEED TO SHOW OUR SALARY SLIP IF WE HAVE WORK EXPERIENCE OR A LETTER FROM THE COMPANY WILL WORK THAT A AM EMPLOYEE OF THAT COMPANY ???
satyaprakash : If you are an employee, will you not be paid a salary? Are you a full-time employee or just a freelancer?

xyz : SORRY FOR THE OFF TOPIC QST, PROVISIONAL MERIT LIST IT OUT , I GOT STATE RANK TO BE 41 , SAFE ENOUGH FOR JB?
satyaprakash : Based on what has been the trend in the past, yes. All the best to you, xyz!

harshit : HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO INCREASE THE VOCABULARY? HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD BE ATLEAST DEVOTED? WHAT SOURCE SHOULD BE PREFERRED BECAUSE LEARNING CUE CARDS IS A VERY TOUGH JOB?
vijayalaxmi : Please dont get too worried about vocabulary per se. The best way to learn words is to relate the word to some situation in your life. The contextual meaning is what matters. So a habit of reading will stand in good stead . Cue cards can be used even now. But again cue cards also you cannot memorise words. So target atleast 5 new words everyday learn them thoroughly with synonyms and antonyms make it a habit everyday.

student : THANK U MR BHARAT, AND I ALSO WANTED TO KNOW HOW TO EFFICIENTLY USE THE CUE CARDS?
charlton : Read and remember the meanings. Revise after 3 days. Try to associate the word with people. But also improve your contextual understanding by reading a lot of articles from a) The Economist b) New York Times c) The Guardian etc

arko : IS SOLELY DEPENDING ON MOCKS FOR LR A GOOD STRATEGY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE COMPLETED TIME LR MATERIALS?
charlton : Practise from AIMCATs, SAMCATs, Past years CAT Papers.

shubham : SIR, DO WE HAVE TO FILL DIFF FORMS FOR EACH IIM ??
bharat : no... but you have to check/select the boxes listed for various IIMs and the programs they offer.

rajiv : HOW IS AMISH TRIPATHI'S BOOK FOR BEGINNER?
gouri : good...interesting read.

student : CAN U PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO EFFICIENTLY USE THE CUE CARDS?
gouri : read the words and their meanings several times...then try making sentences with them.

harshit : WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CAT AND OTHER MBA EXAMS IN TERMS OF QUESTIONS ON GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY?
satyaprakash : In the last few years, there have not been any direct questions on grammar & vocabulary in CAT while they have been asked in the other exams. The idiotic approach that many aspirant take is to not work on vocabulary, grammar & usage at all, instead focusing solely on R.C. without realising that in order to be good at it, one needs to have a good vocabulary as words are the building blocks of a language, & a good grasp of grammar and usage as they are the glue that hold the language together. Do not ignore any subject area in the V.A. section if you are trly desirous of doing well in CAT, kid. May the force be with you!

chetak : SIR SORRY FOR OFF TOPIC QUESTION BUT MY HOME UNIVERSITY RANK FOR MAH MBA CET (97.9 PERCENTILE) IS 680. WILL I BE ALLOTED A COLLEGE IN MUMBAI BASED ON THIS RANK?
satyaprakash : Yes.

dlcb7ac51 : SIR, IS THE RC BOOKLET AND NEWSPAPER ENOUGH TO PRACTICE OURSELVES FOR RC AND VA?
gouri : it would be a good idea to supplement with other sources too.

test : IN AIMCAT 1822, THERE WERE 5 PASSAGES IN RC AND I COULD ATTEMPT THESE RCS PROPERLY WITH GOOD ACCURACY, BUT THEN COULD NOT ATTEMPT ANYTHING IN VA SECTION. SINCE THE PRACTICE EXERCISES STATE TO DO 5 PASSAGES IN 1 HR, I HAVE DEVELOPED THAT HABIT AND DID NOT HAVE TIME LEFT FOR VA QUESTIONS.
satyaprakash : Change your strategy with an eye on the clock. Use the AIMCATs to try out different strategies as you never know what surprise CAT will spring upon you.

neel_1234 : JBIMS MSC FINANCE VERSUS CORE MBA FINANCE FROM ANY NEW IIM (RANCHI, ROHTAK, KASHIPUR, TRICHY, BODH GAYA, AMRITSAR, ETC)
bharat : JBIMS.

harshit : THANKS VIJAYALAXMI. CAN YOU SUGGEST SOME GOOD NOVELS?
shritisharma : catch-22 by Joseph Heller, 1984 by George Orwell, Animal Farm, Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance. Are you already into the habit of reading novels?

aaa : SATYAPRAKASH SIR I AM A FREELANCER
satyaprakash : As per my knowledge, it won't count as work experience. It needs to be full-time work experience post graduation with salary slips & joining/relieving letters.

shubham : HOW CAN I CHECK THAT MY SUMMARY IS CORRECT OR NOT.
charlton : Summary questions need to be tackled purely by elimination. ELiminate choices which are 1) incomplete 2) out of scope with extra information 3) distorted with wrong information 4) Unnecessarily lengthy choices.

rajiv : HOW TO LEARN CUECARDS
shritisharma : keep 2 to 5 cue cards with yourself everyday, mark the words that you already know. Keep glancing at the other words whenever you get the time. When you look at the word, try to make a sentence with it or relate it to real life situation and personalities( this can be done on the move as you don't really need to write these examples and sentences)

test : I DO NOT UNDERSTAND GAMING AND TOURNAMENT CHAPTER IN LR. CAN I LEAVE THAT?
satyaprakash : Not at all advisable. Don't test your luck, test!

arjun : WHAT IS ; THE NUANCES OF THE LANGUAGE USED.
vijayalaxmi : Nuances is the delicate nature of language where the writer is not explicitly stating things but saying it in a subtle manner.

harshit : WHICH TOPICS OF LR ARE PREFERRED IN CAT AND WHICH IN OTHER EXAMS?
satyaprakash : All topics in all exams. Don't try your luck at second-guessing the entrance exams.

sham : IN ENGLISH IS THERE ANY SPECIFIC AREA WHICH CAN MAXIMISE THE SCORE?
vijayalaxmi : RC

dlcb7ac51 : PLEASE SUGGEST SOME BOOKS...I AM AN AVERAGE READER
gouri : You can read any novel that catches your fancy.

rajesh12 : HOW TO IMPROVE RC
vijayalaxmi : You begin with a reading habit. Start by reading the newspaper everyday. Read the lead articles in the newspaper and summarise it para wise. Then gradually combine newspaper reading with working on 1 or 2 passages and then move on to your section tests.

rajesh12 : HOW TO WORK ON VOCAB
gouri : work with the cue cards... you could also try Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis... It's a very good book.

rajesh12 : HOW IS XAT DIFFERENT FROM CAT
satyaprakash : It's tougher & trickier than CAT. Get hold of the XAT 2017 paper and compare it with any of our AIMCATs to get a better idea.

rajesh12 : WHICH GOOD COLLEGES CAN I APPLY WITH XAT
charlton : XLRI, XIM, GIM, S.P.JAIN,

rajesh12 : DO YOU SUGGEST WE TAKE XAT ALSO
gouri : Yes...it is a good idea..

rajesh12 : APART FROM CAT WHICH OTHER EXAMS SHOULD I WRITE
satyaprakash : XAT, NMAT, IIFT, SNAP, TISS, MAT, ATMA and the various state-level entrance exams. Read about them and decide which ones you want to write.

rajiv : HOW DO I IMPROVE MY ENGLISH
shritisharma : reading comprehension is very important. Also, parajumbles, odd sentence out, summary writing, para completion require good reading habit. so make it a point to read two good articles(minimum) everyday. Write down the main idea of different chunks of that article, cover varied genres. You can read articles from the Hindu, ET, The Indian Express,The Guardian, the Economist, Harvard Business Review, the New Yorker (you can simply google and read articles from these sources). Don't read random blogs because the grammar and word usage can be questionable. Look up the meanings of the words that you do not while reading. Practice 2 RC passages everyday. You are provided with enough practice material.

anu : ARE ALMOST ALL THE VARIETIES OF QUESTIONS COVERED IN LR STUDY MATERIAL PROVIDED BY THE TIME INSTITUTE?
satyaprakash : Absolutely.

test : WHAT SHOULD BE THE GENERAL STRATEGY OF ATTEMPTING THESE SECTIONS? AS IN GO THROUGH ALL THE QUESTIONS FIRST AND THEN START ATTEMPTING OR ATTEMPT AS YOU TAKE A LOOK ON EACH QUESTION?
satyaprakash : Try different strategies till you hit upon what works for you. There is no one-strategy-for-all approach in CAT, kid.

harshit : HI SHRISHTI, NO I AM NOT INTO THE HABIT OF READING NOVELS.
vijayalaxmi : Harshit then I suggest that reading the newspaper will be of greater help. The newspaper will help you in developing vocab, reading skills and writing skills . Then you can move on to read the suggested novels.

neel_1234 : JBIMS MSC FINANCE VERSUS CORE MBA FINANCE FROM IIM INDORE/KOZHIKODE/LUCKHNOW
asim : IIM L,K,I must be preferred over JBIMS. It offers better quality education, brand value, infrastructure and placements.

rajiv : I JUST JOINED COACHING, HOW CAN I GET A GOOD SCORE IN THE CAT
satyaprakash : By meeting a faculty member who will guide you in detail, making sure you follow a proper study routine, ensuring through analysis of your performance in the AIMCATs, and by starting your preparations immediately.

shubham : SIR, HOW TO IDENTIFY DIFFICULT QUES. NEED HELP
satyaprakash : Meet a faculty member at your T.I.M.E. centre.

sindhu : HI SIR/MAM, I AM PREPARING FOR VARC BY READING NOVELS TOO.. NON-FICTION NOVELS ARE TAKING TOO MUCH TIME, I COULD READ FICTION NOVELS(AVG 300PGS) IN 2 DAYS(WITH UNDERSTANDING AT ABOVE AVG LEVEL), BUT NON-FICTION I COULDN'T COMPLETE IN 15 DAYS ALSO.IS IT OKAY IF I READ NON-FICTION 20 PAGES/PER DAY OR SHOULD I HAVE TO INCREASE? (AS 20 PAGES ITSELF TAKING 1-1.5 HR FOR ME)?
gouri : read whatever interests you...iy doesn't matter which genre it is...

harshan : SIR SORRY FOR OFF TOPIC QUESTION . BUT HOW IS N.L DALMIA FOR PGDM FINANCE ? I HAVE TAKEN PROVISIONAL ADMISSION THERE. MY HOME UNIVERSITY RANK IS 651. I WILL CERTAINLY WAIT FOR OPTIONS IN CAP ROUNDS BUT JUST IN CASE.
satyaprakash : It's an average college with some pretty decent placements in Finance. But as long as you are not, you will do well in your career. All the very best of luck to you, Harshan!

rajesh12 : TIPS FOR PARA JUMBLES PLEASE
vijayalaxmi : Please check a similar question has been answered

dlcb7ac51 : IS IT MANDATORY TO LEARN LOGIC EQUATIONS AND FORMULAS FOR LOGIC REASONING
satyaprakash : Doing so will help you immensely & save you time.

rajesh12 : SHOULD I STUDY ANY OTHER BOOKS APART FROM TIME BOOKS
shritisharma : You can read other novels, magazines, newspapers but preparation wise the books provided by TIME are the best

rhea : INSTEAD OF READING THE NEWSPAPERS WHICH ARE THE BEST ONLINE NEWS WEBSITES I COULD USE?
charlton : You need to read (Not just news) views and opinions from 1) The Economist 2) The Guardian 3) Frontline 4) New York Times etc

shubham : WHAT IS PREFERABLE , TO READ PAPERBOOKS OR E-BOOKS ? NEWSPAPER TOO
satyaprakash : Begin reading, kid. That's the first step. Pick up anything and start NOW. Once you are in the habit of reading, alternate between different formats.

harshan : THANK YOU SIR !
charlton : Welcome

viji : THANK YOU SO MUCH... IT WAS HELPFUL
satyaprakash : We all strive to be so, kiddo! All the best!

shubham : THANK YOU SATYAPRAKASH SIR. :)
satyaprakash : Keep the faith! And practise! All the best!

raj : SIR WHEN I READ NEWSPAPER IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME TO READ THE WHOLE NEWSPAPER LIKE OF EDITORIAL AND OF BUSINESS SO IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY TO READ OR ANY OTHER SOURCE WHICH I SHOULD READ FROM?
shritisharma : Focus more on the editorials, choose the other articles on the basis of their current relevance. You can also read The Guardian, Frontline, The week, The Economist

tanny : I NEED HELP IN EVERY SECTION... AND I AM DOING CORRESPONDENCE WITH T.I.M.E... CAN IIASK HELP FROM THE CENTRE FACULTY K
tarannumraza : You can join the fast-track batches or the crash course at the center. This way you can clear all your doubts & take the exam confidently.

sanya : SIR HOW SHOULD I WORK WITH SENTENCE CORRECTION? I AM FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO COPE.
charlton : First revise Pronouns, Prepositions, Articles, Subject-Verb Agreement, Tenses, Phrasal verbs. Look at past years CAT papers for practice.

saurabh : SIR CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGEST SOME TIPS TO READ FASTER AND BETTER.
shritisharma : use the eye span method (discussed in you RC book), don't mouth the words while reading as it decreases your reading speed. Either jot down the main idea of each chunk as you read or after reading try to recollect all the main ideas you covered. Your average speed has to be 350-400 wpm in CAT so figure out the genres that you are comfortable and uncomfortable in. The ones you are uncomfortable in are the ones you have to practice the most. Read from any of the following sources: The Hindu, Economic Times, HBR, the economist, the Guardian, The Newyorker

sm : SIR, I HAVE TAKEN FINAL ADMISSION IN PGDM IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS OF BIMTECH, NOIDA. DOES THIS HAVE GOOD SCOPE
satyaprakash : Do you have another option?

sindhu : I WOULD LIKE TO READ NON-FICTION BECAUSE DIFFICULT PASSAGES WILL BE OF HISTORICAL EVENTS OR PHILOSOPHICAL. SO IS IT OKAY IF I READ 20/PAGES PER DAY (1HR)? OR SHOULD I STOP NOVEL READING AT ALL AND READ EXTRA NEWSPAPERS,NEWSWEBSITES?
satyaprakash : If you keep on reading, your number of pages read per day will surely go up. But it's not as much about the number of pages read per day as it is about the improvement in your comprehension and the advancement in overall understanding that matters. And unless you have been a reader of fiction, focusing on that genre is not of much help.

tan : IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO DO PARAJUMBLE OR PARACOMPLETION QUESTIONS BEFORE THE RC QUESTIONS?
vijayalaxmi : Try this strategy in your section tests if it works there it will work in the AIMCATs and the CAT

saurabh : SIR WHILE READING THE NEWSPAPER EVERYTHING FROM FRONT-PAGE TO SPORTS PAGE SEEMS IMPORTANT TO ME. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME TO FILTER OUT WHAT ALL THINGS ARE TO BE READ WHICH ARE RELEVANT TO CAT.
satyaprakash : You have hit the nail on the head! Everything is important. But if you want to skip articles, then evaluate them on the basis of their impact on society and your knowledge so as to identify the ones that are of lesser importance.

arjun : IS IT ENOUGH TO READ EDITORIAL PAGE OR THE ENTIRE NEWSPAPER {THE HINDU}
satyaprakash : Hell No! Where would you get such a thought from! Read the entire newspaper. All are good. Just ensure that you read the editorials of The Indian Express & The Hindu.

tejet : HELLO SATYAPRAKASH SIR, 10TH- 95.09 12TH-87.3 GRAD- 7.9 CAT16-92 QA-87 VA-76 DI-96, OPEN CATEG, GOT NO CALLS, I WILL JOIN A IT COMPANY IN JULY, I COMPLETED TIME CAT LONG TERM COURSE LAST YEAR.. FACULTIES, PLEASE GUIDE ME, WHAT SHOULD I JOIN/DO THIS YEAR TO HAVE THE BEST CHANCE FOR CAT17?
satyaprakash : If you are an ex-T.I.M.E. student, please visit your centre and ask for a meeting with a FM who will guide you in a detailed manner as per your calibre. All the best!

anu : I COMPLETED MY ENGINEERING THIS YEAR. GOT PLACED, BUT NOT INTERESTED TO JOIN THE IT INDUSTRY. SO I THOUGHT I'LL GIVE CAT EXAM A TRY THIS YEAR. WILL THIS ONE YEAR OF NOT DOING ANYTHING EXCEPT PREPARING FOR CAT BE A BLACK MARK ON MY RESUME? OR CAN I OPENLY TELL THE INTERVIEWER THAT I WAS NOT INTERESTED IN JOINING THE JOB, SO LEFT IT AND PREPARED FOR MBA INSTEAD?
satyaprakash : There are scores of people in the IIMs who have a gap in their resume. There is no sin in taking time off for preparation. As of now, put all your energies into your CAT efforts. The interviews will happen post-CAT.

sm : NO SIR.
satyaprakash : Then your question becomes redundant, doesn't it? Push out all other thoughts from your mind except the one you have about doing well in your PGDM. Focus on being in the top 5% of your batch and you will surely reap the benefits during placements.

naitikjoshi : I COMPLETED THE MATERIAL IN LR... SHOULD I SOLVE ARUN SHARMA???
bharat : that's a good idea... however, before doing that, ask yourself - how have you been doing in the various tests -- Online Sectional Tests, AIMCATs and various Handouts. If the performance has not been good, we suggest you revise TIME material and put in greater deal of practice.

anjitha : HI, ACTUALLY I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH READING COMPREHENSION AND I AM REGULARLY DOING MY RC PRACTICE BY READING SEMI FICTION NEWSPAPER MAGAZINES ETC AND TRYING TO SUMMARIZE IT. IS THAT REALLY IMPORTANT TO KNOW THE MEANING OF EVERY WORD? NORMALLY I SKIP SOME WORDS IF I COULD COMPREHEND THE PASSAGE. BUT NOT KNOWING THE MEANING OF SOME WORDS MAKES ME BIT CONFUSED WHETHER I AM DOING RIGHT OR NOT ESPECIALLY WHEN IT AFFECTS MY FLOW TO COMPREHEND. PLS COMMENT ON THIS
vijayalaxmi : Every word in the passage is important for an overall understanding and for a better connect between paras. Please continue reading and that will surely help you to overcome this hurdle.

abhay : SORRY FOR OFF TOPIC QUE BUT BADLY NEED THE ANSWER. SELECTED FOR NMIMS BENGALURU 10THE. 56.57 12TG 64.2 GRAD 77.01 8 MONTHS WORK EX. IF I BE IN TOP 10-20% OF THE BATCH CAN I EXPECT 12+ PACKAGE?
satyaprakash : That will depend on your profile, the economic scenario at that time, the kind of companies that would visit NMIMS-B at that time, and so on. In other words, instead of having expectations, have the desire to learn as much as you can. All the best!

saurabh : SIR IN THE INITIAL PHASE OF PREPARATION FOR LR ON WHAT THING I SHOULD FOCUS MORE SPEED OR ACCURACY.
bharat : accuracy

sravani : SIR HOW DO I PREPARE FOR CAT IN 6 MONTHS WHILE WORKING FULL TIME.HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I GIVE DAILY FOR CAT PREPARATION.
gouri : as much as you can...

arbaz : HELLO SIR/MAM, SORRY FOR MY OFF TOPIC QUERY. IS JBIMS MSC FINANCE WORTH APPLYING? I AM FROM AN ENGINEERING BACKGROUND. I MIGHT GET A DECENT MMS COLLEGE ( SIES/DALMIA) THROUGH CAP ROUNDS .THANKS IN ADVANCE.
satyaprakash : If you are genuinely interested in Finance, and like the profiles offered to the MSc candidates, then JBIMS will not be a bad bet. If not, then it's the other b-schools for you, kid!

arjun : WHILE PRACTICING LR QUESTIONS , I GET EXHAUSTED AND ENTER OTHER ENTERTAINING THINGS , HOW TO DEVELOP INTEREST IN LR AND RC
satyaprakash : Other entertaining things? There is nothing as entertaining as a question that is not easy to figure out. You need to work on your attitude towards LR & RC and stop considering them as a punishment for your transgressions. Lots of tips have been mentioned in today's chat. Read the transcript thoroughly.

anu : IS IPE, HYDERABAD A GOOD INSTITUTE TO JOIN?
satyaprakash : We do not recommend it unless you have no other choice, are deperate about getting a business degree, and cannot wait any longer!

asb : SORRY FOR AN OFF TOPIC Q. AM TAKING CLASSES SINCE 1 MONTH AND AM IN THE 3RD YEAR OF BCOM. NOT SURE OF ANY FUTURE PLANS. STILL IN A PUZZLE REG MY INTERESTS. WHAT R THE PROSPECTS OF DOING AN MBA. IS IT DIFFERENT FROM PGDM
satyaprakash : It sure is an off-topic question! And one that needs a long reply. It will be much more beneficial to pose your question to a FM at your centre so that you have a clearer idea.

dlcb7ac51 : SIR DO IIM'S OFFER PGDM COURSES? OR THE DEGREE IS OF AN MBA? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO?
bharat : a degree like MBA is offered by a university while autonomous colleges (not affiliated to any univ) like the IIMs can offer only PG Diploma. Do not worry about the name of the program. Quality of education and name of the college matter more.

arjun : HOW TO DEVELOP ATTITUDE TO LR AND RCC
satyaprakash : The only way is to begin reading & practising. All the best!

tanny : ARE THE BOOKLETS FROM TIME IS SUFFICIENT TO HAVE GOOD SCORE IN CAT 17
satyaprakash : Oui, Monsieur!

neel_1234 : @BHARAT JBIMS MSC FINANCE VERSUS CORE MBA FINANCE FROM IIM INDORE/KOZHIKODE/LUCKHNOW
bharat : I agree with my colleague -- however, you could IIML and IIMK ahead; else JBIMS over IIM Indore.
