Preparation tips - Quantitative Aptitude, DI and Reasoning for SBI PO Exam
(Chat Transcript)

vijay : I M FROM POWAI TIMES
krishnakuppachi : Hi Vijay

vijay : PLZ GUIDE WHAT TO ATTEND ? AND WHAT TO SKIP?
hussain : Hello Vijay, Give First priority to easier questions in each section, moderate next, leave the difficult questions. Concentrate on topics, which have more weightage. ( Concentrate on following topics : In quant. Concentrate on topics E.R.P.V, PPL,T&W, T&D, AVG., SI&CI, in data interpretation leave the caselet if it is given ( try to answer three questions out of five in each set ) In Reasoning Puzzles, Deductions, Symbols & Notations, Coding & Decoding, Blood Relations, Directions, Input output Decision Making, In English Reading Comprehension, Cloze passage, Grammar, Sentence Starters, Fill in the blanks, Para Jumbled Sentences..) No guess work, No negative marking, Accuracy is important, don't give your exam on cut off requirement, give your best attempt

vijay : SECODNDLY HOW TO START, I MEAN WHICH SECTION ATTEND FIRST AND SO ON
supratim : I will suggest start with English / VA section , then move to Logic / reasoning and do Quant at the end . Please follow this in at least 2 mock papers .

vijay : CAN I SEE THE QUERIES OF OTHER STUDENTS ?
krishnakuppachi : Hi Vijay, the chat sessions have been undertaken by TIME for a few months now. You can visit the TIME Home Page, and access the CHAT History to see the queries posted by students earlier. http://www.time4education.com/local/articlecms/page.php?id=427

nia : SIR WHAT WILL BE THE LEVEL 0F QUADRATIC QS IN PRELIMS, TWO OR 3 DIGITS NUMBERS OR SINGLE?
hussain : Don't worry about quadratic equations, if five questions given, you will find two questions easy, two questions moderate & one difficult, Try the easier one first, moderate next, with simple practice you can easily answer three questions out of five,

nia : WHAT MUST BE THE SEQUENCE OF QUESTIONS TO ANSWER IN REASONING .. IF THERE ARE 20 QS ON PUZZLES
krishnakuppachi : Irrespective of the number of questions on puzzles, first look out for questions on deductions, coding-decoding, inequalities-based conclusions, and other individual questions (OMA, Direction sense, etc), before attempting puzzles. If there are 20 questions on puzzles, chances are high for 7-8 puzzles questions being easy-moderate. Try to identify them and work them fist. This will ensure that you have done a reasonable number of attempts in the reasoning section

honey : SIR , HOW WE RELATE X AND Y IF X=4 , X=6 AND Y=5 , Y=3 WHAT WILL BE THE ANSWER
supratim : Compare both values of X with both values of Y . Here first compare X = 4 with Y =5 as well as Y=3 , then take X=6 and compare with Y =5 as well as Y =3 . In the second case X > y but in first case X may be greater or it may be less . So no relationship between X & Y can be established . Mark the appropriate answer option accordingly .

sailee : SIR WHAT SHOULD BE MY PREFERENCE FOR ATTEMPTING QUESTIONS OF QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE FOR SCORING AT LEAST 20 MARKS IN 20 MINUTES IN MATH SECTION?
supratim : Please do it in 2 rounds . First answer easy questions. 8 to 10 questions will be easy . Answering these questions should not take more than 6 to 7 minutes . Then start solving moderate difficulty level questions . There will be 12-14 moderate difficulty level questions . Solve 7 to 8 correct in next 7 to 8 min .

nia : CONSIDERING IT IS PO LEVEL AND THE CHANGE IN PATTERN STARTS WITH SBI, WHAT MUST ONE PREPARE IN NEW TOPICS FOR REASONING? ESPECIALLY DEDUCTIONS AND INPUT OUTPUT
krishnakuppachi : As far as your preparation is concerned, there should not be any change in the preparation. Keep practicing the fundamentals of all topics perfectly. If you see the new pattern of questions in Deductions asked last year, it's not exactly a new pattern. It was asked the reverse way, that's all. So, it's a matter of quickly adapting to the way the questions are asked in the exam. Please do all the mocks that are given in your online sections. We have tried to cover many models of questions and you might get used to a different format of questions.

honey : SOME BALLS ARE BAT THEN WE CAN SURE THAT SOME BALLS ARE NOT BAT .?
krishnakuppachi : Hi honey, assuming that this is a deduction question that you are asking, Some balls are bats is not the same as some balls are not bats. 'Some balls are bats' can be represented in 4 different venn diagrams, where as 'Some balls are not bats' only in 3 different ways. Hence, they are not considered the same.

nia : CAN I SPEND MORE TIME ON APRROXIMATION AND QUADRATIC AND DI AND MAXIMIZE MY SCORE HERE. RATHER THAN CONCENTRATING ON SINGLE ARITHMETIC QS AND SPEND MORE TIME ON INDIVIAL QS
hussain : No, don't spend more time on particular area, to maximize your score you pick easy questions from each area of quant. rather than doing from one area, when you prepare topics like E.R.P.V, P.P.L, T&W, T&D, AVG, SI/CI, you can easily score good marks not only in Arithmetic but also in DI ( It has roots in Data Interpretation )

ashwini : I HAVE NOT TAKEN THE PRINTOUT OF THE APPLICATION FORM FOR SBI PO.THE LINK TO TAKE THE PRINT IS DEACTIVATED.WILL I BE ABLE TO GIVE THE EXAM,AND IF THE APPLICATION FORM IS ASKED IN FUTURE FROM WHERE CAN I GET IT?
hussain : Hello Ashwini, First download your hall ticket and concentrate on your exam, all the selected candidates will get one more chance to take print out of their application at time of joining, they will active the link, you don't worry, All the best

sailee : SIR WHAT AVERAGE MARKS DO I NEED TO SCORE IN TIME'S ALL INDIA SBI PO MOCK IN ORDER TO CRACK SBI PO PRELIMS?
supratim : Try to score as much as possible . Eye on surpassing 50 . You can do it. Keep on working hard .

naina : SIR IN QUQNT SECTION IAM WEAK IN GEOMETRY AND MENSURATION,PERMUTATION AND COMBINATIONS CAN U SUGGEST ME TO SKIP THIS FROM PREPARATION OR TO PREPARE FOR EXAM WHICH IAM PERFECT IN OTHER SECTIONS
supratim : Please do prepare these chapters also but after preparing ERPV , Percentage , Profit & Loss, SI-CI , Average Mixture , T&W , T&D . Between Geometry & Mensuration , prepare mensuration first because it will be mostly formula based questions . Permutation and Combination will be easy if you learn fundamental theorem of addition and multiplication . Do not leave any chapter . It may happen that all easy questions came from those chapters which you left .

sailee : SIR WHAT IS EXPECTED CUTOFF OF SBI PO PRELIMS?
hussain : Kindly don't give your examination on basis of cutoff requirement, do well try to score maximum marks, ( for your information, we can expect cutoff approx. between 45 to 50% ), it is purely based on the level of difficulty, number of vacancies etc.,

honey : NIACL PRE EXAM(CONDUCT ON 23-4-2017) WILL BE THE SAME LIKE SBI PO ?
supratim : It will be slightly easier .

naina : FOR REASONING CAN U SUGGEST ANY BOOK FOR ESPECIALLY IN PUZZLES LIKE BLOOD RELATIONS AND SOME OF FACING AWAY FROM CENTER BECAUSE IAM WEAK IN THIS AREA
supratim : T.I.M.E Reasoning book is sufficient . For more practise please write sectional tests and full length tests .

nia : HOW IS BOB MANIPAL PRGRM? FEEDBACKS WILL BE OF HELP AND EXAM LEVEL
supratim : I think you are talking about this exam http://www.bankofbaroda.co.in/Careers/Admission-2017-18.asp . If so then please check the program criteria carefully before proceeding . Exam paper will be easier than SBI PO paper .

naina : HOW TO START DISTRIBUTION QUESTION INSTEAD GIVING OF DIRECT INFORMATION THEY ARE GIVING MORE NEGATIVE STATEMENTS WHICH CONSUMES A LOT OF TIME AND SUGGEST ME TO HOW TO START THOSE QUESTIONS WHICH ARE NOT HAVING DIRECT INFORMATION.
krishnakuppachi : When you prepare the table to fill in the info, and you don't have direct info, then do the following. If there are negative info, then jot them beside the table (against the specified negative point), and if the info is general, write it little away from the table. Once you fill all the info, direct, negative and general onto your paper, then focus on the general info and see the table. You need to start working the table, with the most certain, or the next best, where a parameter can go in one 2 places, and so on. If you have a question, where the least that you could do would be to start with 4 options for a parameter, then its best to drop the question and move with other sets. Ideally, you will have info about 2 alternate options. If not, the worst is 3 options for a parameter. Anything else, the question is worth dropping/not attempting further.

nia : HOW TO WORK AND GAIN CONFIDENCE IN SERIES QUESTIONS IN QUANTS.. ALWAYS THE PATTERN CHANGES AND HOW TO WORK ON COMBINATION SERIES
supratim : Here I am writing a series - 2 , 4 , 7 , 12 , 19 , 30 ... What is the next number ? First get the logic . Take help from faculty members and friends if you are not getting it . Your work starts now . Change the first number ( say - take 6 instead of 2 ) and write down next 6 numbers using same logic . Do it for 50 questions. You will become very good in solving number series questions.

naina : SIR WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CONCLUSION AND INFERENCE STATEMENTS AND ALSO TELL ME POSSIBILITY OF CRITICAL REASONING SECTION IN SBI PO FOR HOW MANY MARKS
krishnakuppachi : Both Conclusions and Inferences are "the opinions formed" by the reader from the facts/info given in the statement. Conclusion is definite one (i.e. its definitely true) where inference need not be definitely true, even a 'possibly true' answer can be accepted as an inference. And as far as the marks are concerned, we are unlikely to get CR in prelims, and in the mains we might get anywhere between 8-10 questions, though in one of the recent exams, it has been around 15 questions.

naina : TOTAL OVERALL HOW MANY QUESTIONS WE NEED TO ATTEMPT IN SBI PO AND ALSO FOR NIACL EXAM
hussain : Hello, Attempt (number of questions ) is not important, Accuracy is important. Try to score 50% in the examination (When it is difficult paper )

naina : IN A CERTAIN CODE LANGUAGE "HIGHER WE GOES MONEY" IS WRITTEN AS "ZX5% YN2@ VT4& FX6*. AND " UMBRELLA KITE I SATELLITE" IS WRITTEN AS " AF8@, SX1&, NK4%, LU9*.AND "JOHN BELONG TO AMERICA " IS WRITTEN AS "VL2@ CA7* LQ4& NT6#. AND " SWEET ARE NECESSARY HEALTH" IS WRITTEN AS " UA5@ LX3# CT9& UV6*. HOW TO SOLVE THIS TYPE OF NEW PATTERN QUESTIONS IN REASONING
krishnakuppachi : Typically in these questions, the number of letters of the word is given as part of the code. That is the first thing to notice. Once the word and code combinations are identified, for the other codes (non number of letters), it could be other logics, like the first letter, last letter, opposite pairs, corresponding pairs, etc. and the best way to work these questions would be to go by elimination in the choices of each individual questions. The trigger point is the number of letters matched with the codes.

nia : DOES ONLY DI COME IN THE QUANTS SECTION IN SBI MAINS? WHAT ABOUT ARITHMETIC QS?
supratim : DI comes high in numbers in SBI PO Mains. Arithmetic questions also may come. You have to be prepared for both DI and quant questions. Do not take anything in chance.

naina : THANK U TIME TEAM FOR UR SUGGETIONS
hussain : Welcome

nia : THANK YOU FACULTY MEMBERS.
krishnakuppachi : Welcome. Wish you all the very best in the upcoming exams.

naina : NON VERBAL REASONING WILL COME FOR NIACL EXAM FOR PRELIMS AND MAINS
supratim : May get couple of questions.
