SECTION
– D (Part – II)
Directions for question 137: The following four pairs may have synonymous or antonymous
or part-whole relationships or no relationship at all with the pair provided in
the question. Select the pair of words which has no relationship with
the numbered pair.
137. PLENTITUDE : ABUNDANCE ::
(A) Augury : Divination
(B) Indurate : Consolidate
(C) Perspicacity : Transparency
(D) Mulct : Muzzle
Solution:
We have to indicate those pair of
words that bear no relationship to the given pair of words. ‘Plentitude’ means
having things in ‘abundance’. The relationship is one of synonyms.
In option (A) augury means omen or
portent. Divination means using omens or magic powers to foretell. The words
are synonyms.
Option (B) has the words –
‘Indurate’ and ‘consolidate’. ‘Indurate’ means physically or morally hardened.
‘Consolidate’ means to make a position of power or success stronger so that it
is more likely to continue. So this option bears a relationship with the main
pair of words.
Option (C) has the words –
‘Perspicacity’ and ‘Transparency’. ‘Perspicacity’ refers to be able to
understand somebody or something quickly and accurately. ‘Transparency’ is the
quality of something, such as a situation or an argument, that makes it easy to
understand. This option also bears a synonymous relationship.
But the words in option (D) share no
relationship between them whatsoever. ‘Mulct’ means to extract money from
someone, either as a penalty, or by fraud. ‘Muzzle’ is a device made of leather
or plastic that you put over the nose and mouth of an animal, especially a dog,
to prevent it from biting people. To ‘muzzle’ also means, figuratively, to
restrain. Choice
