TANCET exam is one of the few exams which keeps the test taker on toes. Like every other year, this time also there were a few surprises in the exam.
In the section based on grammar, for the first time, there were five questions based on synonyms. In the section based on data sufficiency, there were more questions based on reasoning than those based on quant. Till now there were a few occasions where we had DS questions based on reasoning given, but they were restricted to a maximum of five questions on all those occasions. In the same way, in ABS section the second passage was very lengthy (it ran into more than five pages with more than 3,600 words).
Let us now examine the sections individually.
Analysis of Business Situations (ABS), Reading Comprehension (RC) and Grammar
There were 60 questions from these three areas with 20 questions in each area.
There were two passges with ten questions each. The first passage focussing on "The Runeway Clock company considering the introduction of a new line of electronic watches ..." was a little bit lengthy. This passage was more about statistics. But a student who had prepared well with our ABS practice exercise papers would have found it simple. The other passage focussing on "ABC company,USA manufacturers of computers and computer accessories has recently entered into a joint venture ...." was better not to attempt type, as it's not only lengthy but also time-consuming.
In the Reading Comprehension section, like last year this time also we've four passages with each passage having five questions. The focus of the questions is on the central theme, inference based, etc.
The surprise part in the Grammar section is that for the first time there were five questions based on synonyms. Besides, the words given were not of regular usage. The questions based on the grammar tested the students on aspects like tenses, punctuation, verbs, adverbs, phrasal verbs, etc. A major portion of the questions were simple.
On the whole, we can classify these areas as moderately difficult. A score of 36+ marks can be considered very good.
Quantitative Aptitude and Data Sufficiency
These two areas together had 40 questions with 20 questions in each area.
Quantitative Aptitude part of TANCET 2016 can be considered as easier as it was last year. We can classify this year's quantitative aptitude part as a scoring one as most of the questions were simple to understand and easy to solve. Moreover the major chunk of the questions were from percentages, profit & loss, simple interest and compound interest. The following table gives the topic-wise classification of the questions given on Quantitative Aptitude.

Data Sufficiency part of TANCET 2016 paper had a good mix of easy to moderate level questions. But the important point as mentioned earlier, the number of questions based on reasoning were more. The questions from the areas like coding and decoding, calendars, arrangements, etc dominated the paper. Apart from these there were questions from the areas - mensuration, numbers, equations, ratio and proportion, etc. Though there were some time consuming questions, still a majority of the questions could be answered by spending about 35-40 minutes for both Quantitative Aptitude and Data Sufficiency.
A score of around 28 + can be considered very good in these two areas put together.
On the whole, a test-taker scoring 64+ can definitely hope to get admission into top M.B.A colleges.
