Test Pattern

Total Marks 200
Total number of multiple-choice questions of one mark each 200
Duration of examination Two Hours
Subject areas with weightage:
English including Comprehension 40 Marks
General Knowledge/ Current Affairs 50 Marks
Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability) 20 Marks
Legal Aptitude 50 Marks
Logical Reasoning 40 Marks

Mathematics:

As per the students’ feedback, the questions were from basic arithmetic and they were able to comfortably crack them. The questions were given from the areas like

  • Percentages

  • Profit

  • Loss

  • Equations

  • Speed based questions.

  • Numbers

  • Geometry/Mensuration

Areas like AMA, ILS, Clocks and Calendars were missing this year. Students with basic practice would have found this section to be a good scoring one.

Overall Difficulty level: Easy

Logical Reasoning:

Logical reasoning was more of a language based reasoning this year. There were questions on Critical Reasoning, Statement-Assumption, Assertion-Reason and Syllogisms. Only 3-4 questions were from Analytical reasoning. The types of questions were broadly

  • Number Series

  • Alphabet series to find the missing letter

  • Logical Reasoning set

  • Syllogisms

  • Connectives

  • Strong & Weak Arguments

  • Conclusions

  • Course of action

  • Statement/Reasoning

Overall Difficulty Level: Moderate

English:

As compared to last year the English section was quite different. There was only 1 Reading Comprehension passage with 10 questions. Quite a few questions were based on Vocabulary – on Synonyms, Idioms, Prepositions, Latin Phrases and Foreign Words .There were questions on Para jumbles and grammar as well. The distribution of questions was as below

  • 1 Passage with 10 questions. Passage was based on Non Violence and Egalitarianism - 10 Questions

  • Direct Synonyms like Latent, Laxity etc - 5 Questions

  • Foreign Maxims De Jure, Carte blanche, Raison d’etre - 5 Questions

  • Fill in the blanks based on Conjunction and Preposition - 15 Questions

  • Para jumbles with first and sixth sentences given and the rest of 5 sentences to be rearranged - 5 Questions

  • Idioms and Phrases - 5 Questions

Overall Difficulty Level: Moderate

General Knowledge:

It proved to be a shocker to students! Almost 50% question were from static GK - which was not what the bulletin/website indicated. Students who prepared for this section of CLAT with the info that only Current GK over the last one year will be tested, were in for a rude shock. Those students who also prepared for SET and other exams which have static GK, and not just CLAT, would have an edge in this section.

The questions were from national & international events, areas covered were science, Constitution, awards, summits, persons, places etc.

Overall Difficulty Level: High (especially due to the shock static GK component)

Legal Aptitude:

Another shocker of a section for the students! They were expecting Legal Reasoning and were asked quite a few question on Legal Awareness too. 10 Questions were of Reason-Assertion type with no Legal principles given. This was also unexpected. Those students who also prepared for SET and other exams which have static GK, and not just CLAT, would have an edge in this section also.

Expected Cut-offs

Please note that the following scores are tentative and are being mentioned based on student feed back.

Tier I schools    : 145+
Tier II schools   : 135 +
Tier III schools  : 130 +
