The history of IIT Delhi dates back to 1961 when it was originally established as ‘College of Engineering’. Since then it took two more years for the Government of India to take a decision on the future of this college. As per the Government’s initiatives to run and drive scientific and engineering institutes and establishments across the country, it finally decided to declare the college of engineering as Institution of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963" and was renamed "Indian Institute of Technology Delhi". The Institute then gained the Deemed University status to run courses at its own decision, to frame its own academic policy, to conduct examinations etc. IITD has signed MoUs with several domestic and foreign scientific establishments to train their faculties, students and also to enhance the research prospects of the institute.

IIT Delhi offer under graduate courses in BTech (4years), Dual Degree (BTech & MTech) and Integrated Degree (M Tech) streams. The disciplines available in the BTech program are 1.Chemical 2.Civil 3.Computer Science & Engg 4.Electrical 5.Electrical (Power) 6.Engineering Physics 7.Mechanical 8.Production and Industrial and 9.Textile Technology. In the dual degree stream, 1.Biochemical Engg & Biotechnology, 2.Chemical Engg (with specialization in Process Engg & Design), 3.Chemical Engg (with specialization in computer applications in chemical Engg), 4.Computer Science & Engg, and 5.Electrical Engg (with specialization in Information & Communication Technology) programmes are available. And the Integrated Degree is available in Master of Technology in Mathematics and Computing.

IIT Delhi is very well equipped with modern amenities, thanks to Students Activity Centre. It is a all-in-one place with providing facilities for student club activities, gymnasium, swimming, Amphitheatre, Music Rooms, Hobbies workshop, a large dark room and billiards table. Co-curricular activities such as sports and games, recreation and shopping etc are available inside the campus.

Mr. Manvinder Singh Banga, the youngest ever chairman of Hinduatan Lever Limited, India’s largest FMCG, Mr. Asim Ghosh, MD of Hutchison Essar, Dr. PS Rana, Chairman and MD, HUDCO are some of the reputed alumni from IITD.
