The sixth IIT in the country was established in the year 1994 at North – Eastern region, Guwahati – the capital of Assam. Within a short span of time, as per the India Government conceived, the institute located at remote part of the country earned reputation from the student as well as scientific establishments.

Since started academic programme from 1995, IIT G is conducting 4 year BTech programs in 1.Biotechnology 2.Chemical 3.Civil 4.Computer Science & Engg 5.Electronics & Communication Engg 6.Engineering Physics 7.Mathematics & Computing and 8.Mechanical. In addition to this IITG is offering courses in Bachelor in Design (Industrial Design and communication Design) – a 4 year course and a 5 year Integrated MSc in Chemistry.

IIT G takes care of the needs of their student and staff with ample facilities. It has hostels, commercial complexes, guest houses, indoor and outdoor sports and games facilities, cultural festivals under the Gymkhana banner, dispensary for health services etc. Every student is provided with a personal computer and hostel rooms are connected with Gigabit Ethernet backbone. There are two banks with ATMs, a post office and a central library with 72,000 volumes of collections in various modes. A student of IITG will get single bedded hostel room during his academic period.
