IIT Kanpur located in the state of Uttar Pradesh was established in the year 1960 with its campus spread over an area of 1062 acres. During the initial years IITK received support from universities like Princeton, MIT, Carnegie, Purdue, Ohio, Berkley etc for the academic programs and setting up research laboratories; this has facilitated the Institute to be molded into a centre of world class standards with facilities like the National Wind Tunnel Facility, The Advanced Centre for Material Science, a Bio-technology centre, the Advanced Centre for Electronic Systems, the Samtel Centre for Display Technology, Centre for Mechatronics, Centre for Laser Technology, Prabhu Goel Research Centre for Computer and Internet Security, Facility for Ecological and Analytical Testing etc. In addition to this, IIT Kanpur also has its own airfield, for flight testing and gliding activities.

The Computer-Centre in IITK is supported by PARAM 10000 super computer is continuously available to the students for academic work and recreation; its among the first large academic institutions in India to be extensively networked with an institute-wide LAN and Ethernet access to every student room in the residence halls.

Besides ties with several Industries to promote the students-industry interaction, IITK has also initiated in setting up the first Indo-US research academy which will bring together talented undergraduates from their respective institutions in a collaborative learning and promote a greater understanding of the cultural context in which Indian and US students learn and develop. Ashoke Sen (String theorist) , N.R.Narayana Murthy are some of the famous Alumni of IITK.
