IIT – Madras
The post independence India saw many scientific and technological tie-ups with
advanced countries which helped us to lay the foundation for future scientific
establishments. In 1956, the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru got an
offer from German government during his visit to that country to set up a
premier level Engineering Institute for grooming future technocrats as well as
for the development of the country. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was
born as a result of Indo –German Agreement (first ever agreement in Indo-German
bilateral relations) which was signed in 1959. The Government of the Federal
Republic of Germany offered all forms of technical and academic assistance in
moulding IIT Madras into a premier Higher Learning Institute for Engineering
research, consultancy and development in India.
Through a Charter from Parliament of India in 1961, the Institute was declared
as an ‘Institute of National Importance’. The vision of IIT
Madras focuses on ‘To be an academic Institution in dynamic equilibrium with its
social, ecological and economic environment striving continuously for
excellence in education, research and technological service to the nation’.
